over rated

People just like this movie because famous or respectful people are involvedin it. If a bunch of no names did this flick, it would not be getting therave reviews on here. The special effects were good except when hearts areinvolved. Where's the people's ribcages? You can't just put your hand intosomeone and pull out their heart. That's why people have ribcages. Whoeversaid this was "real" is totally wrong. The tropical jungle looks more like a forest in Indiana or somewhereMidwest. There are no evergreen trees in jungles! although sometimes itswitches to where the people are running through a bamboo forest! And whydoes that lady stand there and get painted without trying to run away? Thatwhole scene with her is ridiculous. Her actions make no sense. It's not a brilliant movie. It's very run of the mill.

What do you get when you cross, Zombie ,Cannibal Holocaust and Re-animater?

Zombie-caust-imater??? No, Zombie Holocaust! It can't decide if it wants to be a zombie movie, a cannibal movie, or a mad-scientist movie, and thats not a bad thing. Who doesn't want to see zombies and cannibals working together to completely devour man-kind? I mean, c'mon.... The gore is spectacular and some of the best I've seen. The special effects are done by Sergio Salvati who has done most of Fulci's gore stuff and it shows. If you like zombies, cannibals or zombie-caust-imater's, this ones for you.

Too much monkey business

Zombie Holocaust is an entertaining diversion. If you regularly combthe drecks of Italian horror garbage, you've seen much worse. This is aspliced-together film, like Mattei's Hell of The Living Dead, only thisone cobbles two dumb gory b-movies together. There's a heavy dip in thefondue pot in store for this stink-ridden pile of sleazy excrement, andby that I mean I like it. Not only does this s hit sizzle but its gotrecognizable faces in it: Ian McCulloch from Zombie; Alexandra DelliColli from The New York Ripper; Donald O'Brien from Emanuelle and theLast Cannibals, and a black guy who was in Zombie. I'm not racist, Ijust don't remember his name.Like I said, there's two movies here (at least!)-- one involving apsychotic doctor and the other being a cannibal/zombie film. So you'dthink there would be a lot going on here. But there isn't. It's just anonslaught of cheap gore scenes. One scene has Ian McCulloch defendinghimself with an outboard motor to an attacking zombie's face. HIS FACE.And if that ain't enough, Delli Colli has the camera pointed at herbush for the last fifteen minutes of the movie. Based on that alone, you should be scrambling to get to the video store. But seriously, there's dozens more treats in this movie including disembowelings, throat gashings, and skull-sawing autopsies. If you love films like Hell of The Living Dead, Virus, or City of TheWalking Dead, you'll probably enjoy this one so give it a shot. It'sbrain taffy.

Possibly the best Italian zombie film ever!

'Zombie Holocaust' is a true must for any horror, gore or exploitation fan out there. It has zombies, cannibals, a mad scientist, cheesy acting, great gore and a naked chick! What more could you want? There's even a drinking game that's easy as pie: As soon as you see the symbol (and believe me you don't need to look for it. It's given a huge close-up and a 'bing' noise for 'dramatic effect') - take a shot. It happens so many times it's hilarious. The barmy plot for this has a group sent off to an island to investigate cannibalism from a tribe that have been stealing organs. After being attacked by the cannibals, the cannibals then get scared off by zombies. Then our heroes find out that the zombies are products of a mad scientists Frankenstein-like attempts at creating a supreme race. Zombies and cannibals then fight it out in a battle at the end...Some footage used is from Fulci's 'Zombi 2' film, which is shameless, but it's only some location footage so it's not too important. And any film that has the line "I could kill you now... But I'm determined to have your brain!" said seriously, has got to be good. Don't take my word for it, just click 'Add to Cart' and you won't regret it!!!!

A real piece of work

The problem with most Italian zombie or cannibal flicks is that if you'veseen one, you've seen 'em all. Well, this movie has double that problem, because it's a zombie AND cannibal movie. The plot is that cannibalcultists in America are stealing body parts (or something like that; it'sdifficult to pay attention). A doctor and his assistant decide to go tosome remote island, and see if they can't find this cannibal cult. Whatthey discover is a doctor who is re-animating the dead, for no discerniblereason. Like you would really care at this point. This movie is all over the place. It has way too much plot for its own good. The stars are nobodies, and the acting is the worst ever, at best (althoughthe female doctor gets naked A LOT). The zombie makeup is par, but the gorefactor is way up there, including multiple gut rippings and an excellentdissection of a zombie head with an outboard motor. The film does live upto the Great Horror Film Criteria that "anyone can die at any time", butunfortunately the movie is really terrible. For Sadistsonly.

Good plot but too much talk not enough action

This movie just wasn't packed with enough zombie action for my personal taste. It was a lot of talk and not enough zombies/action. I was pretty disappointed. If you're looking for gore and lots of it pick a different film. This film is slow moving and not gory enough for my insatiable appetite for zombies, guts, gore, and the macabre.

Beautiful Film

A real tearjerker. I laughed so hard I almost cried to death. I watchedthis film when I was 14 and it really changed my life. It turned me intoan extreme horror fan, only to be disappointed with tons of garbagefilms afterwards that never really compared to The Butcher knife'ssharpness. If anyone knows some even better, more gory and obscurefilms, please let me know.PS Did anyone else get a headache from all of the piercing screaming andsound or was it just me

GORE!

Do you like gore? If yes, stop reading this now and buy this movie. The story is actually not as convoluted as I was expecting it to be, considering this is another of those Italian gorefests. The zombie aspect of the holocaust, however, never happens. But that doesn't stop a whole lot of angry cannibals from running amock. And boy, do they ever. Plenty of gore here. Acting is alright. Ian McCulloch shines, of course. But whatever. No one really gives a damn about acting in this movies. If they do, well. That's just strange and uncalled for.So yeah. What we have here is a pretty cool, straightforward story and great, rockin' gore. I couldn't ask for more.Oh yeah. Nudity. There's some of that too.

Cannibals? ...and ZOMBIES?! YES!

Zombie Holocaust (aka Dr. Butcher MD Medical Deviate in the UnitedStates) is a film that capitalizes on the success of the now cultclassic cannibal and zombie films of the late 70's and early 80's suchas Zombi 2, Cannibal Ferox, and Burial Ground etc. The movie beginswith a mysterious man stealing body parts from cadavers in a New Yorkhospital for a "late night snack." What is with these Italian zombiefilms and New York connections anyways? The man is eventuallydiscovered and promptly flings himself out of the hospital windowbefore anyone can question him. Upon investigating his body we discoverthat he bears markings that link him to a native cannibal tribe on anisland off of the South American coast (here we go again) and our leadsare sent to investigate. Ian McCulloch (of Zombi 2 fame) plays Dr.Peter Chandler (Peter...also in Zombi 2...weird) and reprises his roleas a zombie slayer and travels with anthropologist and medical studentLori Ridgeway (Alexandra Delli Colli) to the island to meet with Dr.Obrero (Donald O'Brien) whose questionable character leads to aninteresting twist in the movies latter half. Upoon our charactersarrival at the island they encounter cannibal mayhem, zombie carnage, and some crazy doctor antics that make for the aforementioned twist.Zombie Holocaust falls into one of my favorite categories,Euro-zombie-trash! These movies usually contain an overabundance ofgore, nudity, bad acting, and a plot with enough holes to embarrass aslice of Swiss. Zombie Holocaust does not let down in any of thesecategories except acting; the acting here is fairly solid. GO IAN! Themovie was released in America as Dr. Butcher MD as mentioned above andit contains a different opening. Despite common belief, that is theONLY significant difference between the two films. The Dr. Butcherversion contains an R rating but does not lack any of the gore in theZombie Holocaust version. The Euro-cut is superior to me only becauseA) it is the original, and B) because the introduction spoils the wholezombie revealing that remains kind of mysterious in Zombie Holocaustuntil about halfway through the movie. You find yourself wondering howthe will fit in them BAM! There they are. Things to look forward to inZombie Holocaust include some really well done gore scenes includingsome eyes being ripped out and eaten, graphic disembowelments, amachete to the head, some likely unsanitary surgeries, and thegrand-daddy of them all here, an running outboard boat engine propellerto the head of an attacking zombie! Oh... and the nudity, there isplenty of that! The version of the movie that I own comes from Shriek Show (a divisionof Media Blasters) and has both crisp image and sound, despite theatrocious dubbing! I still don't understand why we can't just get theoriginal language tracks with English subtitles!? The movie came aspart of the highly recommended Zombie Pack 2 (along with Burial Ground:The Nights of Terror and Flesh Eater). Shriek Show, as usual, packedthis one with extras including both American and German trailers, anextensive poster and still gallery, an interview with the EFX director, the opening segments of the US release with commentary, and a slew oftrailers for other zombie and cannibals flicks of the era. This movieis something that any true zombie/cannibal aficionado should have inthere collection. It is comparable to Zombi 2, so don't be surprised ifsome of the zombies or the sets look the same.Overall, if you are a fan of zombies, cannibals, Ian McCulloch, extremegore, movies with mad scientists/doctors, or a combination thereof, youshould check this out. An overall excellent flick in my opinion.

Old And Boring

Zombie Holocaust was very boring and plain. There is something I sensed throughout the film and what that did is put me to sleep and I had to try 3 times. Everyone was telling me it is the goriest movie, but it wasn't even close. The camera used to shoot the film was very amateurish. This is one old movie you'll defiantly want to skip.

Cannibles Vs Zombies

Zombi Holocaust is a Cannible film, Zombie film and Mad scientist filmthrown together to make one really gory movie. Some scenes are similarto Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2 such as it starts in New York and then they gointo the tropical island, the Zombies in the island's church. Even twoof the actors from Zombi 2 are in Zombi Holocaust. The scenes with the Cannibles killing and eating the people are niceand gory, the Zombie make up is good and kind of similar to Zombi 2'sZombie make up. One problem is that we don't see much of the Zombies atfirst but halfway through the film they do show up.The Mad Scientist elements are something new since Zombi 2 didn't havea man trying to create Zombies for his research and uses the Canniblesfor his experiments. Zombi Holocaust is a great Zombie flick with somegood gore effects. Check this out.

Canibals, Zombies...

Alright. I think most of us already know that 'Zombie Holocaust' is not about to be nominated for any oscars. But who defines good taste anyway? There were a great number of things about this film that I enjouyed (speaking as an avid horror fan of course). The many involvements of the plot, I found to be most effective. The film starts out as though it is set to be a medical/hospital themed horror film, a little like Re-Animator, which would've worked for me because I love that sort of thing. But Zombie Holocaust reveils its true colors and begins to introduce tribal elements, before the main characters ship off to the island of doom and the film proves to be along the same lines as 'Cannibal Ferox.' There is never a dull moment and the veiwer will always be guessing. The title 'Zombie Holocaust' is a puzzleing one, because there really is very little zombie holocausting going on.But it is still a zombie movie and holds a proud position in that sub-genre of my horror movie collection. It must be agreed, that the zombies in this movie were done remarkably well. The make up is probably the best I've ever seen for this sort of thing, and the zombies are scary. This movie has got it all: Cannibals, zombies, gore galore and a mad scientist to boot. What more could a horror fan ask for?! This movie is also very harsh and sadistic, especally the infamous 'vocal cord removal scene' Yeah, this film will stay with you long after the credits have rolled. Zombie Holocaust aka Dr. Butcher M.D. is one of the most individual movies I've seen. Combining primative, tribal elements with medical elements is a rare thing, and the film will not be forgotten for it. The dubbing is ok. A little cheezy at times (at least on the version I've got), but would we have it any other way?In conclusion, I recommend this film to any horror fan. Wether you like it or not, it is undeniably a milestone in horror cinema.

Great, gory, ZombieCannibal movie.

If you're a fan of eurohorror or Zombie/Cannibal films, this is for you. Great gore, plus, I actually liked the storyline for this one. Although the music in the Dr. Butcher version can get annoying, its still a campy masterpeice. I loved nearly all of the gore scenes, Ian Mcculloch's character rips a Zombie's face off with a propeller from a motorboat, Cannibals rip out eyes, etc., those were all great. I also loved all the flesh eating in this one too. I also found a bit of un-intentional comedy in this, and thats always good. If you're a gorehound, pick up a copy of this.

Gorily good fun

This film was banned for a while in the UK. It's now received an uncut DVDrelease. The film begins in a New York City hospital, where cadavers in themorgue are having their limbs cut off and their internal organs removed.Eventually, the culprit is caught, but he jumps through a window to hisdeath. He has a strange tattoo on his chest, which leads a woman in thehospital and Dr. Chandler (Ian McCulloch of Zombie Flesh Eaters fame) on aexpedition to a tropical island which is frequented by cannibals, and alsoby the zombie-like victims of a mad doctor's experiments. Cue lots of goryscenes, including victims scalped, eye gougings, throat slashings, entrailseaten by cannibals, and most amusingly of all, Dr. Chandler putting amotorboat propeller through the head of a zombie. Gorily goodfun.

This review is from: Zombie Holocaust (DVD) A movie with cannibals and zombies! The zombies dont even kill anyone but they are awesome! This is more of a cannibal feast! If you are an italian horror fan you'll enjoy this. Plenty of brutality, violence, and nudity. I laughed so hard!

Decent gut munching, blood splattering horror show

In the world of gore cinema, nothing brings the blood better thanzombies or cannibals. During the boom of both genres in the late70s/early 80s, it's surprising that only one person had the bright ideaof crossing the genres. The result: Zombie Holocaust, the mostridiculously over-the-top gore show that tries to be a classicthriller, but the sheer outrageous qualities of both genres clashedwith its intentions. As a result, it became a cheesy, yet otherwisenoteworthy addition to the shock/schlock cinema. That said, it's also acomplete mess. Sure, it's entertaining enough, but it's rather sloppy, poorly directed, and also has some pretty boring sequences ofcharacters walking lost through the jungle. There are some otherhumorous qualities throughout, such as the exploited and overdone gore, bad dubbing, and equally bad dialogue. The positive qualities arereally any action or eye candy that you can find that will hold yourattention for another five minutes before they do it again. It's acompletely outrageous and, indeed, original set up, but is so goofythere's no way you can take this seriously. Some recent events of cannibalism in a New York hospital leads IanMcCulloch and Alexandra Colli to heading to the island Keno because ofa marking they found that originated there. Once they locate the"haunted" island, they get a group and head into the jungle to find Dr.Obrero, the mad scientist that they don't know is a mad scientist yet.Soon, the guides and minorities of the group (and one white guy) arepredictably killed off by the local cannibals. McCulloch and Collifinally reach Obrero, who tries to shoo them off the island as quicklyas possible. When they linger around, he finally is exposed. Obrerouses the cannibal tribe as his minions to keep people off the island, and also as a body source for making zombie slaves with braintransplants. To top that off, with the other two still around, he'sreally excited to have a chance to use their Caucasian brains toexperiment on! The best part about this set up is the cannibal tribe, which is a good excuse for putting in exploitive and pointless gorescenes. Anyway, the whole ordeal ends rather predictably, but you wouldnever guessed how that ending happened. A fairly decent, yet somewhatconfusing twist that involves a lot of female nudity. The best thing this movie has going for it is that it brings the redstuff insane and somewhat nauseating proportions. There are somedisplays of characters dying that are completely overdone and drawnout, just so you get to see a few more minutes of guts before movingon. The whole walk through the jungle and cannibal attacks could havebeen accomplished in a couple of scenes, but each character is killedoff in their own alloted time, and they extend those scenes so thatwhen they move on, there isn't so little action that the time inbetween seems obnoxiously boring. Other scenes of the blood and gutsinclude the grisly brain transplants where the special effects arerealistic enough to make you cheer and cringe at the same time. Inother words, it's classic, gory exploitation. But the gore isn't theonly exploited aspect. The nudity generally pops up unnecessarily andin prolonged scenes, usually with slow zoom ins and shots scanning thebody so that you can get your fill without missing anything you wantedto see (there is no sex, however). The most entertaining, or should Isay laughable aspect of this off-the-mark insanity is the incrediblyover-the-top plot, which combines the cannibals and zombies in anunbelievable and incredulous way. They really pushed it to make thisthe pinnacle of exploitation by including the genre's two best angles. It make you laugh just thinking about it! Okay, now, to check down ourlist, I've mentioned zombies, cannibals, brain transplants, nakedwomen, heavy gore, and exploitation. Now, what's not in here that willkeep you entertained for a few minutes?Given the subject matter, it's an okay flick, but everything stillcomes together rather sloppily. Some plot points come into question(like why would the cannibals allow Dr. Obrero to do his work, whenthey only come back to kill him anyway?), not to mention how ridiculousthe plot is in general (though we're dealing with a ridiculous genre),and the execution could have been a little more competent, even in theconfides of this cheesy underworld of celluloid. You'll really have toshut your brain off for this one. The good thing is that it's not acompletely boring movie by any means, and that all the errors that arepresent don't outweigh the overall fun. There's some of action to keepit interesting, from the scenes in New York, to the zombies on Keno, but once I saw it, it's hard to find it worthwhile enough to see thewhole run through again. Still, if you like zombie slaughtering mayhem,or mindless movies with an excess of everything, feel free to enjoythis. Other than that, Zombie Holocaust is really only an interestingobscurity.

Death by propeller!

Another film known by many names (eight, to beprecise, that IMDB has been able to track down), ZombiHolocaust is probably best known by American cult-filmdevotees as Dr. Butcher, MD. I ended up picking thisone up because there are a rather large number ofcrossovers with Lucio Fulci's brilliant splatterfestZombie-- writer Fabrizio DeAngelis was one of theproducers of Fulci's film, male lead Ian McCulloch wasthe lead in Zombie, character actor Dakkar plays anative guide in both, etc. (Most interesting, one ofthe film's actors, Walter Patriarca, was Zombie'scostume designer. Go figger.)Simple plot, which should sound familiar to anyonewho's seen Fulci's film; a number of deaths occur inNew York City, and Ian McCollouch, a beautifulsidekick, and two of their pals end up going to aremote Caribbean island where there's anEnglish-speaking doctor who treats the natives. Soundfamiliar? For about the first forty-five minutes of this film, Iwas too busy thinking that it was exactly like Zombieto be impressed. (No one, these days, is sure whichfilm came out first, and most people also drawparallels to another classic of the genre that cameout the same year, Ruggero Deodato's CannibalHolocaust.) Then Ian McCollouch disposes of a zombiewith a motorboat motor, and suddenly things startedgetting a whole lot more fun. Rather like The EvilDead, this is a film where there's a whole lot ofsetup (though Raimi pulled it off miles better), butwhen the gore starts, the director lays it on thick, fast, and ugly. And while death-by-propeller isprobably the funniest and nastiest scene in the film, there's certainly more than enough bloodflowing/spraying/dripping/being drunk/etc. to pleasemost fans of hardcore horror. Pound for pound, though,in comparison to Zombie, the latter stands up as thebetter film. As one reviewer put it, "Fulci... mighthave had the sauce, but [he] passed on the cheese."Fulci's obsessive attention to detail, betterscriptwriting, and stunning score give Fulci the edgeover Girolami. But man, it's fun to be the judge. ***

Splatter gore zombis canibals

Here is a film that has it all, evil Dr's experiments, cannibals on theprowl, gross zombi's seeking flesh as well. plus a soundtrack that wouldbegreat on Holloween. Ian McCulloch stars in this flick, he also starred inZombi II, which I believe was better done, but this one still had manygreatpoints to it. Sure the acting, the dubbing, & the special effects leftsomething to be desired but it was a fun film to watch at least if you areahorror fan.

For hardcore zombie-flick addicts only

In the late '70s and early '80s, in the wake of the success of Romero'sDawnof the Dead, the Italian film industry was churning out zombie flicks leftand right. Some of them, like Lucio Fulci's Zombie, practically redefinedthe genre. Others were simply cheap knockoffs designed to cash in on thezombie craze. Zombie Holocaust falls into the latter category. In fact, this may be one of the most shamelessly derivative of all.For starters, much of the plot is out-and-out stolen from Zombie. Themoviestars Ian McCulloch (who also starred in Zombie -- go figure) as a cop whomust travel to a remote tropical island to investigate a series of bizarrecannibal murders in New York. Sound familiar? When he gets there, hefindsthat a mad scientist is creating a race of zombies, who are wreaking havocon the island -- another plot element from Zombie. And, as in Zombie, thefilm ends with a fiery showdown between the remaining humans and thezombies. None of this would matter if the film had great special effects, good acting or any other redeeming quality. But it doesn't.On the plus side, there are plenty of extras on this fine DVD from ShriekShow. Among these, there is a lengthy interview with Roy Frumkes, who wastangentially involved with the highly edited American version of thisfilm,"Dr. Butcher, MD." German and American trailers, an interview with aspecial-effects artist who worked on the film and a deleted scene are alsoincluded. There is also an easter egg: go to the "Special Thanks" menuandclick on the name "Edwin Samuelson." When you do, you'll see the Americanversion of the opening sequence. The only thing that detracts from the viewing experience is the slightblurriness of the picture. Cheap film stock used in the originalproductionis the likely culprit here. Given the high quality of the rest of theDVD,it seems unlikely that the film-to-digital transfer is somehow toblame.
