Plot Summary:
Zero Degrees of Separation begins with footage from the family film archives of director Elle Flanders. The Israel depicted in these home movies is idyllic, a testament to Flanders grandparents Zionist aspirations which culminated in the familys move to Israel in the 1950s. In their new home, Flanders grandparents created a beautiful garden, their pride and joy, tended by a series of gardeners, some Palestinian, some Israeli. Ezra, who serves as one of the narrators of the film, was one of these gardeners. Years later, Flanders re-connects with Ezra in order to tell his story, and that of Selim, his Palestinian partner, who lives under virtual house arrest in their apartment. Needless to say, their situation is one of ongoing frustrations, but if nothing else, it galvanizes Ezra into political activism.

The other side
I thought the documentary was very well done. It's great that adocumentary was done that showed the plight of the Palestinians. I readthe review titled, "Too Biased to Recommend". I believe it was theDirector's intention to not show or touch on a lot of stuff that wealready know about like the honor killings, suicide bombings, etc. Weconstantly see Israeli side on the news, but never the Palestinianside. The characters were great. Especially the Ezra and Selim. I believethey don't show much affection because they were brought up in adifferent environment.Very well done film.

Its a courageous film that is actually very low-key in its approach.
I knew immediately from the above user comment (see comment byplypress) that this is probably an interesting film  when the fanaticsstart frothing at the mouth, you know you have to see the film foryourself! Now I've seen it, and I think "Zero Degrees of Separation" isa fascinating glimpse into the bizarre society that is Israel. It's acourageous film that is actually very low-key in its approach. Forexample, the image of Flanders' wealthy British grandmother on a visitto Israel in 1950 (as a prelude to immigrating), standing in the desertin her leopard-skin coat and movie-star sunglasses, is surreal, in itsway. Flanders knows that there is no need for commentary at momentslike these. There are plenty of facts and figures in the film tosupport the filmmaker's contention that the creation of the State ofIsrael has been massively problematic on many levels, but with herhumane and sympathetic eye, she strikes a delicate balance betweenfairly evoking the Zionists' dream and showing some of the harshrealities of the present in Israel  realities which create misery andfrustration for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
