FAST TIME AT RIDGEMONT HIGH MEETS CARRIE

This review is from: Zapped [VHS] (VHS Tape) A very interesting movie...funny at parts with strong supporting performances from Felice Schatcher (who played Nancy on the Facts of Life's first season) and buxom Heather Thomas (who looks too OLD and well developed to be a high schooler). Scott Baio developed telekinetic powers and mainly to use it for personal gains. The ending of the film borrowed heavily from the film Carrie...but with a twist of course! Clothes started coming off everyone in the prom with interesting results. Watching the final scenes you get the impression that teenage girls DO NOT wear bras and that guys wear red bikini briefs with the Rolling Stone's lips logo on the crotch.A funny film nonetheless and is not supposed to be based on reality (GOD FORBID!)

If Things Had Only Gone This Well For Carrie

Zapped secured the services of three current teen stars to guarantee abox office for this comedic salute to Carrie. The three are Scott Baiofrom Happy Days, Willie Aames from Eight Is Enough, and FeliceSchachter from The Facts Of Life. Would that things had only gone thiswell for Carrie on her prom night.Nerdy kid Scott Baio, a misunderstood science genius, gets some kind ofchemicals mixed due to baseball coach Scatman Crothers spillingsomething and a noxious gas overtakes him in the laboratory in school. When he wakes up he finds himself with the power of telekinesis. Afterthat it's one ridiculous situation after another. One thing about this film, except for the three leads nearly everyoneelse in the movie is a blithering idiot. Other kids, teachers, Baio'sparents, Scatman Crothers is an exception. Best scene in the film is onprom night Baio's parents get a couple of priests to perform anexorcism on him.As for the prom, the scene is strictly a takeoff on Brian DePalma'sCarrie with the damage played for laughs instead of violence. Typicalbrat pack comedy by three who were trying to break into the pack. Somefunny scenes, but mostly kind of dopey.

80s classic! Forgotten Treasure!

This review is from: Zapped! (DVD) Zapped, I originally watched when I was 11! I remember it so well. We got it ex rental on Beta Max! It's cheesy, low budget but a whole lot of fun. The underdog nerd scientist who, after an accident in the lab has the power to move things with his eyes! Telekinesis! Every underdogs dream! I used to long for that power. With a mother & father that supresses him Barney finds himself with his new look on life. He takes the losing baseball team to the top and gets himself off the subs bench and astounds everyone with his fierce, powerful batting. All with a little help of course. The bullies get the comeuppance and humiliation they deserve. Throughout the whole story Barney is dealt with lessons in what's right and wrong. He even falls in love with student council president Bernadette! Only three people know about Barneys gift, himself, Bernadette and his best friend, rich kid, sex maniac Peyton. Peyton has ideas that gambling is the road Barney should go down with his power after a very successful winning streak on the roulette table. Controlling the ball Barney and Peyton send the rich popular jocks in a spin as they win every game and lots of money. Barneys conscience is tugged throughout the whole film by Bernadette who fears he's selling out in doing what Peyton makes him. Love concours all in a heart warming finale. The senior prom is a prom to remember a bit like Carrie. But Barney does not kill everyone he wants to teach a lesson he uses his powers to strip the whole year of their clothes and causes chaos! All leading to the dramatic ending. All this set against the beautiful soundtrack of David Pomeranz power ballads "Got to Believe in Magic" and "King and Queen of Hearts". Zapped is a cross between Grease and Carrie! A real light hearted cheesy comedy you can't help but smile at! So pleased it finally made it to DVD!

Scott Baio Is Cuter Than Carrie

Zapped is a zany 80's comedy, sort of Carrie meets Weird Science. It has its moments, though they are pretty far between. The last scene, set at a high school dance just like in Carrie, is the best with a ton of nudity and telekinetic hijinks. See it if you are a fan of 80's teen comedies. There's even some male nudity in this one.

Jon Monsarrat review aging teen flick, awful

If there's anything worse than the teen flick, there's the aging teenflick.I caught this in the 1980s on cable TV and it's representative of theMeatballs and Porky's generation of films. What this film has in common with Star Wars and the X-Men is thefantasy of magical powers.Even if some nudity will amuse you, there's not much about Zapped!worth seeing.Who should see this film:-- nobodyI'll give Zapped! a 3 out of 10.

My brief review of the film

A good-natured high school comedy, done in the typical vain of the1980s, the film tosses around some fun ideas, but in the end it feelsrather like it did not maximise its potential. Everything ispredictable - the love interests that will be established, thetampering that will be done with the mind powers, and the end results. But it is all quite satisfactory to watch, even if the jokes are nottoo funny and the nudity not enough if one is looking to watch it forsuch a reason. The film is ordinary in many aspects, but it is neverreally poorly done, and a few amusing moments or two are enough forthis to be an okay watch.

What dont they make movies like this anymore!

***CONTAINS SPOILERS***On the surface this is a typical 80's teen movie, but with a twist. ScottBaio Plays the role Barney Springboro. A misunderstood teen scientistwithdreams of inventing something big.Well do to a comedy of errors, something he is working on explodes. Thusgiving him telekinetic powers. Guided by the help of his so called bestfriend, Peyton Nichols (Willie Aames) he begins using his powers togamble. This upsets his newly found girlfriend Bernadette (Felice Schachter).Aftersome much needed thought, he realizes his powers can be used for much moreinteresting things.Heather Thomas plays the "hot" chick, Jane Mitchell. The girl all theguysfollow around with the mouths watering. This movie has a much over looked soundtrack with some great songs byDavidPomeranz.*Movie does contatin a lot of nudity, as did many 80'smovies.*I give it 7 out of 10

Scott Baio teenage Sith?

I almost, almost forgot about this movie and found out by accident a month ago or so it was coming out on DVD. What a cult classic!!! We all know Scott Baio to be the nice guy. Well in "Zapped" he is a nice guy, but with a twist, he has telekinetic powers via an experiment done in a high school laboratory. Then he sort of takes out his frustrations out on people who annoy him or have made his life miserable. Plenty of nudity, adult language and 1980s style/fashion.Scott Baio has that semi-Sith quality about him, just watch "Zapped" and you will know what I mean. In conclusion, I can't wait to buy this movie, if you didn't already figure that part out. My only regret is I wish I had done cool experiments when I was in high school to give me powers. No we were too busy participating in norm reference testing. I'm just saying......

exceptional film

This highly under-rated film of the early 80's is not only amasterpiece but a film of immense cultural significance. One thatreally should be studied in any film course that is on offer attertiary institutions around the world. It not only shows good versusevil it has such grand themes as science versus nature and a meditationon the religious right that is often over looked by the more carefreeviewer. These grand precepts joined with a killer soundtrack just reinforcethis film as a piece of cinematic wizardry.Furthermore the cast and the special effects contribute to these pointsand it is imperative that when one views this motion picture theseunderlying themes and points are taken on board to ensure a trueappreciation of possibly the greatest film ever produced.A must see!

Barney (Scott Baio)is a science geek who after an explosion in his science lab, develops Telekinsis (the ability to move things with his mind). After his best friend (Willie Aames) discovers his secret, all kinds of chaos breaks loose. Wild and wacky fun. Great story and great cast. Finally On Dvd. Must see if you are looking to rediscover the 80's and watch a light hearted movie that is really funny and features a great soundtrack.

How Come The Stupid Sequel is On DVD And Not The Original Movie!

I first watched the movie Zapped on cable, I think it was on one of those movie channels like HBO or Cinemax and I liked this movie and thought Scott Baio and Willie Aames were very good in it and I think this movie should be put on DVD! I have the movie on video but since videos wear out easily it would be so much better to have this movie on DVD! I just can't believe that the stupid sequel is on DVD but not the original which is amuch better movie! 3 1/2 stars!

Weird Science

High school science nerd Scott Baio develops telekinetic powers after mixing marijuana and plant food. He and buddy Willie Aames scheme to use it while gambling, playing baseball, and opening blouses...not necessarily in that order. Actually pretty funny (those who don't care for this sort of thing might want to pass) with a great supporting cast: Stuffy Robert Mandan as the principal, Sue Ann Langdon as a horny teacher, Heather Thomas as the snotty blonde bombshell, and Scatman Crothers is hilarious as the custodian. Baio's parents are particularly funny. Mindless fun for the "Porky's" and "Ridgemont High" crowd.

Will please its intended target audience, but is a waste of time for anyone else.

Another teen comedy in the same mould as Weird Science, Porky's, Screwballsand Bachelor Party, Zapped! is perhaps the tamest of the bunch. Scott Baio -better remembered for his role as the Fonz's cousin in Happy Days - has arare leading role as a high school science geek. The most recognizable facein the supporting cast belongs to Scatman Crothers. Hard to believe that twoyears on from his career-defining appearance in The Shining, Crothers can befound slumming in a simple-minded tit-flick like this. The story finds Barney Springboro (Baio) accidentally creating a mixturewhich causes people to develop telekenetic powers. Pretty soon, he realisesthat his new talent can be put to a variety of uses - wallcharts fall onteachers' heads; Barney uses his ventriloquist-dummy to terrorize hismother; and at school baseball games, the ball does some mysterious things. But Barney's greatest use for his new skill is to undress busty girls justby thinking about it! As silly and immature as it sounds, Zapped! is also totally harmless. Youngadolescent boys will probably enjoy it, with its moments of smut and nudity. In real terms, it's a pretty poor movie but serious criticism seems ratherpointless as the film never aspires to be anything more than what it is.Half-Porky's, half-Carrie, with plenty of good-looking women exposingthemselves, a limp plot, excrutiating special effects, and utterlyindifferent performances. If you're a male, aged 12-16, I can think ofplenty of reasons you might want to watch Zapped! If you're anything else,my advice is simple: don't watch Zapped!

Enjoyable mindless viewing - mainly for the young

I first became a movie freak at University in the U.K. where a localArt House theatre introduced me to many European and Hollywood classicsfrom the silent film era and the inter-war period. Subsequently workand marriage took their toll on many leisure activities, includingmovie going, and I had very little ongoing involvement with films untilthe early 1980's when pay TV, including the First Choice movie channel, was introduced to Canada by the Allard brothers of Edmonton.Unfortunately this service closed down after a number of years, but Iowe it a big debt as the programs re-kindled my love for film as an artmedium. Yesterdays' newspaper reported that Allarco Entertainment havebeen granted a CRTC licence to resume pay TV services as from nextyear. This was great news for me. First Choice used to provide us withan eclectic selection of movies including many classics that I hadmissed whilst occupied in building my career, some major recentreleases, a large number of popular but puerile family comedies, documentaries and various special presentations. There were also manyHollywood B films which appeared to have been selected primarilybecause they were available very inexpensively and helped fill up theschedule. The viewing notes mailed to subscribers naturally made allthese sound equally significant and rewarding viewing, so newsubscribers needed a crash course in sorting the gold from the drossand I learned a lot about Hollywood quite quickly by recording manyfilms I could not watch (on beta tapes) and sampling them later whenopportunity arose. More recently, after I retired, I selected the bestof these tapes and transcribed them onto VCD's to view on my DVDplayer; but I still have a number of them, some never viewed, in an oldbox. The news about Allarco encouraged me to dig out this box to seewhat was still in it, and the first tape I found was "Zapped" which wasonce shown on First Choice as a new release. I remembered watching it,and so I looked up the user comments on it in IMDb. When available,First Choice often used to show two versions of films of this type, aregular one for daytime presentation and a slightly more raunchy one(usually featuring a small amount of nudity but sometimes employingwhat many people would regard as unacceptable language) for late nightshowing. I cannot remember whether this was the case with "Zapped", butI do remember thinking when I watched it that the film appeared to havebeen designed to accommodate multiple versions intended for differentmarkets. Barney's telekinetic powers could equally easily lead to hisgirlfriend losing her handbag or her blouse, and the distinction wouldnot make much difference to the story. Some user comments suggest thatthe commercial version of this film may include much more nudity than Iremember in the version I saw on First Choice. This is quite likely asunduly risqué sequences were sometimes minimised to reduce thelikelihood of public complaints - public standards have changed a lotin what is only one generation! I remember "Zapped" as an enjoyable light comedy of the feel goodvariety which was totally devoid of any serious content. But I alsoremember that Barney, played by Scott Baio, showed admirable characterin controlling the use of his fantastic powers and resisting anytemptation to use them for illegal, immoral or really anti-socialactivities. This is a competently made sci-fi comedy to watch and enjoywhen you have nothing better to do - but probably only if you are stillyoung enough to enjoy it. However the interaction between the principalcharacters clicked better here than in most similar films, so I willprobably try to get my beta recorder working again - although of courseONLY to see how my tape has survived 24 years of storage.

A comedic version of Carrie!!

Scott Baio was hot in "Happy Days" playing Chachi, but when he playedBarney in "Zapped", Chachi doesn't stand a chance against him. Beingendowed with telekinetic powers, he was unstoppable. Just disrobingevery girl in school was completely hilarious. I liked it when he madethe popular girl flash, the boyfriend asked her "What are you, somekind of pervert?" And when he made two girls lose their shirts and theguys their shorts, that was a howl as well. The prom scene will the one Barney will never forget. The boyfriend wasa complete wimp when she lost her dress and fainted when he saw herbottom. And all the other girls lost their dresses as well whenBarney's power goes way out of hand. This movie was good, but it could use a little more work. I liked it alot, I don't care what the critics say about it.5 out of 102 out of 5 stars.
