HILARIOUS
This review is from: Youth In Revolt (2010) [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) This movie is absolutely hilarious and a must see for anyone who likes comedy. Michael Cera is absolutely amazing in this movie.

A great cult film
Youth in Revolt is the adaptation of C.D. Paynes cult book by the same title. It follows the storyline of his first three novellas (later combined into a single book) that follow a young man by the name of Nick Twisp, who after discovering the love of his life does whatever he must to stay with her.The film itself is a far cry from the hilarious prose of the witty novel that inspired it. However by itself, Youth in Revolt is surely a great romantic comedy, and Michael Cera's best performance to date. If you are looking for a short, well-directed, well-acted and hilarious romp then look no further. This is a movie I think all movie buffs should add to their collection and one that sadly went unnoticed in theaters. After you watch the movie, if you find the characters entertaining I highly suggest picking up the books. They are a light read, very entertaining and even more well-crafted than this short feature film. Two Thumbs Up!

Arteta's faithfulness to Payne's text, themes and visions never gel as a wholly satisfying film.
23 May 2012
But even apart from the film's vaguely insane endorsement of love at all costs, there's the fact that much of it is simply not very funny.
21 May 2012
It's very funny to be honest and most of the characters are perfectly cast, but Youth in Revolt is a movie in which literally nothing happens. At no point are any of the characters or plotlines developed and most of them are abandoned towards the end.

Once too often....
OK, lets get the biggest bugbear over and done with....I do like you MrCera, but the important point for me is the amount of films you havenow done, means you are Mr and not Master. Yes, you have boyish looksand a weedy body, but how long are you really going to play a 15 yearold?!? I would expect a jump into more mainstream films, but it's yetto really happen, so for me every time a movie like this comes alongwith Michael Cera in, i'm immediately thinking here we go again. It'salways a slightly different plot, but same old story - weedy boy likesgirl, girl likes athletic tall guy, weedy guy thinks of a great idea toovercome said athletic tall guy, athletic tall guy takes revenge, hedoesn't win...YAWN! This one involves a caravan and a french school afew hundred miles from said caravan.....Please stop treating me like anidiot. If you want a movie to waste a couple of hours, then its an OK watch, bearing in mind there is nothing to wow you, but if you want a goodstrong film, re-watch 'Juno', the acting is better and it feels morebelievable. And if you're reading 'Mr' Cera, please look at better scripts, youhave the talent, you just need to step up!

Not nearly as dangerous, clever or edgy as it seems to think it is.
At one point in Youth in Revolt the character played by Michael Cera;Nick Twisp, realises that he must act in a despicable and unsociablemanner for he and his dream woman to be together. As you might expectfrom any character played by Michael Cera this is not an easy task, sohe decides to come up with an alter-ego that fulfils the nasty andunseemly requirements.Nick himself is a fairly standard middle-of-the-road teen, he issocially awkward, gangly and unsure of himself. His dream girl isSheeni, the daughter of ultra-religious parents who is self-confidentand knows exactly what she wants. Unfortunately while she sorta wantsNick, she also is sorta already with Trent, who sounds like any dreamgirl's dream man. After Nick's efforts are thwarted and Sheeni is sentto a distant boarding school that happens to be near where thismysteriously dreamy Trent lives, Nick pulls out all the stops and thehunt is on. Nick decides that the only solution is to get Sheeniexpelled so she can be home and nearer to his embrace. (I made myselftwitch a little there.) Now Nick simply can't be a pr*ck, so he thinksup someone that will, the sort of guy that Sheeni would have no choicebut to go for, a sly, smoking, self confident guy named Francois, whichis basically Nick with a wispy mustache.Nick tags Francois "in" at various times during the film where his ownwimpy ways just won't cut it, but unfortunately Francois' techniquestend to be a little extreme, and the first attempt at moderatelyanarchic acts causes a 5M fire, when news of this gets out Nick isblackballed by Sheeni's parents and his father alike. Now on thequasi-run from the police, Sheeni's parents, the cop Nick's Mum hasshacked up with and the uber-Trent, Nick and his new Indian friendVijay set off on a series of adventures, some saucy in a straight Mrated way, others more of the quirky variety. The problem with Youth in Revolt is that it wants to be Francois, edgy, dangerous and a little unpredictable, but it ends up 100% Nick, nice, straightforward and mainstream, it's all a little underwhelming in theend. The film has several arty actors, including Cera, Steve Buscemi, FredWillard, Justin Long, Ray Liotta (who is both arty and mainstream) andthe currently everywhere Zach Galifianakis. None of them really havesufficient screen time to make an impact, but Buscemi has a crack atmaking his role as Nick's Dad memorable. My other issue is that of Michael Cera, he is rapidly becoming theposter boy for nerdy white middle-class teens and young adults. Inept, not "matinee idol" handsome and with no discernible chick magnetqualities, he nonetheless has managed to get his end away with qualitytail in Nick & Norahs Infinite Playlist, Juno, (nearly) Superbad andnow this... (I can't remember how he fared in year One.) I can't behatin'. Keep on getting' some Mad Mike! As a former Nick Twisp myself, and worse one growing up in a more repressed time where "Just say no"was the norm and the ever present fear of STDs prevailed it is veryannoying to watch this pathetic dork nail almost everything in sight.Final Rating - 6.5 / 10. It has a couple of nice scenes but is nowherenear as dangerous or edgy as it seems to think it is.

There's little to care about in Youth in Revolt, and even less to laugh with; the film lost in a stupor it never successfully navigates out of.

Quirky and entertaining
Michael Cera is Nick Twisp, a put-upon loser youth, who falls forSheeni, who (she says) prefers bad boys. So Nick invents alter egoFrancois Dillinger who leads him into all sorts of out-of-charactertrouble en route to (he hopes) winning Sheeni's heart. This is the sort of movie whose equivalent 50 years ago would have beencalled "charming." The proliferation of bad language, casualendorsement of recreational drug use, and frequent sex references(though without nudity) mean that "charming" doesn't really fit thebill these days, but it is still essentially a "nice" movie despite thefact that it features quite a lot of material which is noticeably lessthan nice.Cera plays his customary put-upon, self-deprecating loser (in this caseloser virgin) as efficiently as ever, but Francois gives him a chanceto play someone else, too (Francois and Nick share a fair amount ofscreen time). You never believe that Francois is dangerous, but he is aconvincing portrayal of someone Nick might think is dangerous, and heshows that Cera can venture out of his comfort zone. The other principals are all very good in a script which is alwaysentertaining, and a plot which keeps you guessing as to where it isgoing next. In particular, as the end of the film neared and Nick endedup deeper and deeper in trouble without being any closer toestablishing the relationship he wanted with Sheeni, I found myselfdesperately wanting a resolution which was fair to both Nick'scharacter but also the events of the movie, and feeling that it wasgetting increasingly difficult for that to be delivered. I'm pleased tosay that I got the resolution I hoped for.

Perhaps this all works better on the printed page, where readers don't actually have to watch the character behave so rudely. (Or better before Cera rewrote much of the script.)
10 May 2012
Between delightful sequences of animation, vibrant performances by the likes of Justin Long, Fred Willard and Ray Liotta, and Arteta's mastery over comic tones ranging from the sensitive to the surreal, this is the rare movie one doesn't want to end.
10 May 2012
It plays to Cera's strengths, which, though overly familiar at this point, are still strengths.
09 May 2012
Doubleday's Sheeni is charming, smart and pretty and has just that hint of knowing danger that drives teenage boys insane. And Cera? No one does this kind of thing better, which is presumably why he keeps doing it.
09 May 2012
Although director Miguel Arteta's adaptation of C.D. Payne's cult-fave book series brings little new to the coming-of-age comedy genre, it's hard not to be beguiled by Youth in Revolt.

I need to craft an alternate personality for myself now.
Nothing is worse than knowing that you have met the girl of your dreamsonly to find out she has a boyfriend that is so unbelievably superiorto you that you have no chance to win her over. That is exactly whathappens to Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), but instead of meekly acceptinghis fate like a good little nerd he decides to fight back by creating apersona his French-loving would-be girlfriend cannot resist, FrancoisDillinger. Francois appears periodically throughout the film to offeradvice and, more often, take control of the situation by flagrantlydefying authority or bringing his bad boy machismo into play.I imagine Francois is what every stock French resistance fighter waslike when he was sixteen with no war to fight; well dressed in gleamingwhite slacks and sandals, sporting a casual-looking button down shirt, but with a thin mustache and cigarette to add mystery and mystique. Thevery image of Francois makes me laugh. This also happens to be the onlymovie where parents are the unknowing consumers of illicit narcoticsand it is actually funny.

Farce more than comedy
My wife and I watched this movie last night and we both left with thesame impression, that it was not very funny. I really doesn't deserveits (current) 7+ IMDb rating since it simply isn't very funny. In fact, the only positive thing I can say about it is that is a gentle movieabout a topic that everyone can relate to (teenage angst about sex)...and if that sounds like I am damning it with faint praise that'sbecause I am.The movie is a romantic farce in parts (but not very romantic and notvery farcical) and it has quite nice surreal moments (the sex bookcoming to life was particularly well done) but these good bits were notenough to save the movie.I thought the acting was no more than functional and the storyline wasweak and not engaging. But the big problem with this film was thehumour -- or lack of it.

Garbage in a Can
The director, outfitted in chains and leather, warned the audience atthe SF Frameline Film Festival Friday night that we were about to seean "experiental" film. Experimental? Leave the video camera on the backseat of the car, let the tape roll and edit in all the pointless dreckwithin eyesight. A meandering pastiche road show manqué that startsnowhere and takes the audience no place. The gratuitous violence thatopens the movie drove more than one patron from the Castro theater. Iwould have left, too, but my cine-buddy needed a ride home and has thisthing about seeing even the worse merde through to the end. By the timethe lights came up the audience had thinned considerably. Tepidapplause. Pro forma questions of the director who seemed pleased withthe product. Avoid this film!
