Pedestrian Romantic Comedy

"You Again" is a romantic comedy. Available in this Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack as well as standard DVD, the movie focuses on Marni (Kristen Bell), for whom high school was the worst time of her life. Her brother's wedding comes a close second, since Marni's former arch-rival from high school comes back to torment her as the bride. While the two young women bare their claws, Marni's mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) reunites with her own high school nemesis (Sigourney Weaver). The film is strictly recycled sitcom, with familiar gags and scenes telegraphed well before they play out on screen. What saves the movie are the performances of Curtis, Weaver, and the always delightful Betty White -- a welcome oasis in this "been there, seen that" flick.Bonus extras include the featurette "On Set With the Director," a behind-the-scenes interview spoof, deleted scenes, an "Ask the Cast" in which cast members answer questions from fans asking for advice. Betty White's responses are frequently a lot funnier than the movie itself.

You Again, should be Not Again

Very Disappointing as I think it is a fantastic cast of actors. Luckily rented from redbox and was only a dollar, as I planned to purchase it, until I saw the movie. I love Betty White, this movie did not do her justice or the other cast members. Too Bad!

I consider watching you again...

I really didn't want to see this. There is a never-ending trend in Hollywood to stuff pointless fluff with talented actors, saddling them with poorly managed scripts and plot points that go nowhere, essentially wasting their talent wholly to turn a dollar. As a rule of thumb, if the film stars more than two `BIG NAMES' then it is probably terrible. So, when you factor in that comedic goldmines Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Betty White, Kristen Chenoweth and Cloris Leachman are all starring alongside current `it-girl' Kristen Bell and reliable supporting man Victor Garber, one has to assume that this is going to be a train wreck. Add to that the fact that this film is a PG rated slapstick comedy and you have my anticipation level plummeting to the floor. As could be expected, the critics hated this film. Here's the thing; the film isn't terrible. In fact, until you get to the ridiculous ending, the film is actually pretty funny and fun. Everyone involved steps up and makes the most of their outlandish characters and they all seem to have fun playing alongside one another, which plays to the strengths of the genre (likability). You can't help but smile while watching these people fall all over themselves trying to outdo one another. Some have balked at the behavior presented as childish and immature, but isn't that the point? I mean, this isn't supposed to be entirely realistic but an exaggerated (as are all films within this genre) example of true feelings. Rivalries spark and some never die and some rear their ugly heads over time without any real resolve. Sure, not many people go to petty lengths to exact revenge, and things could have gone a lot smoother had everyone just say down and TALKED about things, but then the movie wouldn't have been as entertaining. For a quick overview; Marni was a geek in high school and was tormented by J.J., the warden `so-to-speak' of the school. Marni is now all grown up, VERY successful and pretty hot herself. She comes back home for her brother's wedding only to find out that he is marrying J.J., who claims to have never met Marni. Marni tries to put things behind her, but she can't. Marni's mother also has old feelings stirred when J.J.'s aunt turns out to be her ex-best friend from high school.Insert slapstick. The gags don't always work, but the actresses involved (especially Curtis and Weaver) keep things moving at a great pace. They teeter on the schmaltzy at times, but they handle it with a certain finesse that I didn't expect. It is in the final chapter, after `the cat is out of the bag' that the film falls to pieces; and quick. All this bent up anger that the film had been building up is instantly let go of and replaced and a faux sense of resolve in an effort to make everything `happy' again. The character of J.J. makes no sense because she appears so fake and skin deep throughout the whole film only to be forced upon us as sincere in the end (seriously, it doesn't work). That is why I have to give this three stars instead of four. I loved the first three quarters of the film, but it really took a sharp nosedive at the end. I understand that Hollywood is obsessed with the happy ending, but this was just too much.Thank god the final scene was between Betty White and Cloris Leachman!

You Again - 1.5 Stars

Thirty minutes into "You Again", and a soft, lonely voice within mewhispered, "You again." This is a movie we see every year, a clichédcomedy composed of stupid people who are concocted by the idioticnature of its screenwriters too lazy to think of better characters. Theonly advantage of this film from its equally unfunny counterparts isthat this is actually occupied by capable actors, who unfortunatelyfail in the end. How they convinced Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Betty White to join the cast, I will never know.Even the gorgeous Kirsten Bell is too good for this. She is a charmingyoung lady who can also act (which can't be said for all the charmingyoung ladies in Hollywood), but all she is required to do is here istrip off ropes, fall of hills, and break plates. I'm pretty sure allhousehold pets could do that, and I'd bet any self-respecting Labradorwould turn this role down, but she's agreed to be here anyway. May shefind better use of her charm in future roles.Read more here: http://localmoviereview.com/you-again/

Not great by any means, but Ive seen much worse.

Blandly pleasant. That's the most positive thing that can be said aboutYou Again. It's the kind of movie that's made to be played as anin-flight movie. Safe, guaranteed to offend absolutely no one, andcompletely disposable. It's a bit of a shame to have a cast this great given so little to workwith. I'm a huge Kristen Bell fan. She's a very attractive, talented, and funny young actress that deserves much better than the last coupleof movies she's been in. Odette Yustman is another appealing youngactress that's waiting for a breakthrough role while starring in mostlymiddling movies. Jaime Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver both have listsof good movies that stretch a mile long. It looks like from the specialfeatures that they all had a ball making You Again, but it won't begoing on the highlight reels for any of these women. The cast really is the only reason to check this out. The first half ofthe movie is as formulaic as anything you've probably ever seen. Thelaughs are few and far between (I literally forgot that this was billedas a comedy, on occasion). Really, the only genuine laugh I found wasdue to a truly cringe-worthy rendition of "Every Woman in the World" byKyle Bornheimer. The latter half of the movie was slightly moreentertaining, but that's not saying a whole lot.  I actually feel like I'm being pretty generous with my review because Ilike Kristen Bell so much. Watch You Again if you feel so inclined, butyou probably won't remember much about it twenty minutes later.

I Expected This To Be Good

This review is from: You Again (Amazon Instant Video) I expected this film to be good. The cast alone is reason to watch it. Plus, anything with Betty White is awesome because she is the epic queen of awesomeness. Yes that is an official title.I have to say I liked the dynamic of Marnie and her tormentor. I wish there had been a little more detail, as there was a lot going on in this film. They probably could have tacked on an extra half hour of footage and it still would have left a little unanswered or open.I agree with people who say it's hit or miss. You'll either like it, or you won't. I liked it. Yay for me.Also, when you have Kristin Chenoweth in a film, you have her sing. I loved her character, but her voice is so amazing.

passably entertaining

You Again is supposedly a romantic comedy, but for me,it misses the boaton the comedic side.i think i chuckled half a dozen times, but that'sabout it.this really surprised me,since Betty White was in the cast, ithought for sure she would provide many laughs.the cast are all goodhere, but it's the script that lets them down.the one bright spot thoughwas Kristen Chenoweth, even though her role is not that big.i thoughtshe was brilliant and i really liked her wacky character.she's the mainreason for the few chuckles that escaped me.as for the rest of themovie,it wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible either.and it's certainlynot the worst of the genre by a long shot.if you have nothing else todo with your time,(and if you're a fan of Kristen Chenoweth)you coulddo worse than this movie.for me,You Again is a 5/10

Crap Again...

Wow this year stinks in the movie industry! You Again is a rom-comchick-flick with an unfunny predictable storyline filled with clichésand overplayed scenes. There was potential for a good movie here butthe dialogue reads like the writer spent all of about two weeks writingit, while stoned. What probably should have been the funniest scene atthe wedding rehearsal dinner, when the women declare open war on eachother, was uncomfortable. The audience sat in near silence during thisscene with only the sound of an occasional uneasy chuckle or nervoustitter. In the end I am not sure what was harder to believe - that these twoenemies forgave each other, not that the bully needed to be forgiven,or that you can get cheez whiz out of a wedding dress...The funniest scene is the very last one, and you would have to be atleast 50 years old and a fan of the Mary Tyler Moore show to rememberwhy!

I was pleasantly surprised, hooray for good clean fun!

This review is from: You Again (Amazon Instant Video) I was surprised this movie was so clean! Other than lots of short dresses there was very little that could be considered offensive. I'd want to own it one day.

Pleasant and predictable, but little else to make it sparkle

This review is from: You Again (Amazon Instant Video) I really wanted to see this movie with stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Bell and Betty White promising a lighthearted comedy flick. While the story of a nerd turned hottie isn't new, the story held promise for an enjoyable chick flick by virtue of its cast alone. Too bad it didn't deliver.A few things kept me from liking this movie more. First, there were scenes that dragged on a bit. I think they were supposed to be funny, but ended up falling flat for me. Second, the characters were one-dimensional. There was no depth, even to those that were supposed to have some. It made scenes that were supposed to be emotionally charged seem stupid and the actors come off as hacks - even when you know they can do better and have seen it. Third, there were no surprises for me in this film. All very predictable and sewn together as though a middle schooler wrote it versus a professional screenwriter. I realize that's pretty harsh, but with a few exceptions (Jamie Lee Curtis' scenes saved the movie for me...) the movie was largely forgettable and not one I'd recommend. A disappointment, as I really did want to like it.

Surprisingly funny

An attractive and successful young woman finds out that her brother will be marrying her tormentor from high school, at a time when the woman was a social misfit. The tormentor is tall, thin and beautiful, and does not appear to recall the former misfit, or does she? The plot thickens when the woman's mother realizes that her former high school friend/enemy is a close confidante of the bride, and the two of them are competing with each other. This all turns out to have moments of hilarity and other instants of emotional bonding between the characters. This film was a pleasant surprise, eschewing silliness for solid comedy.

HIT AND MISS

If you have watched these chick-based comedies you know that there is a running theme: Good looking girls in high school are mean and women hold grudges all their life. This movie follows in the same vain [sic]. Kristen Bell plays Marnie who was a geek in high school. Because of it she has becomes successful, a female version of a "Boy Named Sue." The ugly duckling hs turned into a swan. She goes home for her brother's wedding, only to find out he is going to marry her arch nemesis from High School, JJ. JJ pretends she doesn't know Marni which irks her even more. Marni's dog likes JJ and the family has accepted her to a point she once again feels she is in competition. JJ is now a nurse who only wants to help people. There seems to be a sudden role reversal, but the movie doesn't portray that very well until the end. JJ's parents are dead so her aunt played by Sigourney Weaver shows up. As it turns out she is very successful and the arch nemesis of her gray haired mom, Jamie Lee Curtis, although their circumstances were different. Marni becomes like JJ in order to destroy the wedding plans. The movie tries to hard to project feel good emotion from the audience to the point it misses the mark (male writing this). Some scenes worked good, such as the dog scene, or the drive in the car past the high school. Other scenes, and there were too many of these, just stank such as the comedy of errors by Jamie Lee Curtis in the bathroom. Fans of Betty White will find feel she was under utilized and not nearly as good as she was in "The Proposal." Add a star for a female.

Blu-ray You Again is a film that achieves its intended result of being a comedy popcorn flick.

From the director of "The Game Plan", "She's the Man" and "Race to Witch Mountain", Andy Fickman returns with his film "You Again", a comedy written by Moe Jelline. The film would star Kristen Bell ("Veronica Mars", "Heroes", "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween", "True Lies", "A Fish Called Wanda"), Sigourney Weaver ("Avatar", "Ghostbusters", "Alien" films), Odette Yusman ("Brothers & Sisters", "October Road"), Victor Garber ("Alias", "Milk", "Titanic"), James Wolk ("Lone Star") and Betty White ("The Golden Girls", "The Proposal", "Bringing Down the House"). The film would also feature appearances by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kristin Chenoweth, Patrick Duffy and Cloris Leachman.VIDEO:"You Again" is presented in 1080p High Definition (2:40:1). The colors are very vibrant for the film. From the clothing presented in the film, the color pallet used to bring out a character such as Kristin Bell wearing yellow, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver in their red outfit, everything looks very good and colors do pop. As for detail, sure you can see the detail of scenes such as a muddy Kristen Bell, a lardy Kristin Bell, pimples and ant bites on Kristen Bell, these are quite detailed in the film but other than that, it's not extraordinary eye catching in terms of color vibrancy but the film does look very good.I didn't catch any banding, artifacting or any other video problems that hinders the look and feel of the film. There is a good amount of color use throughout the film and the film's vibrancy is what stands out the most.AUDIO & SUBTITLES:"You Again" is presented in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (48 kHz/24bit). The film is pretty much front and center-channel driven as it's mostly about the dialogue and of course, it's music soundtrack with Queen, Hall & Oates and Britney Spears. Dialogue is clear but I didn't hear too much use of the surround channels for crowd ambiance. Otherwise, for a dialogue-driven film, the lossless soundtrack is appropriate.Subtitles are presented in English and English SDH.SPECIAL FEATURES:"You Again" comes with the following special features: * FOLLOWING FICKMAN: ON SET WITH THE DIRECTOR: (7:03) Peer into the madcap mind of Hollywood's wackiest director, Andy Fickman, as he orchestrates the comedy of Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis and Betty White. * ASK THE CAST: (1:22) Jaime Lee Curtis, Betty White, Sigourney Weaver and Kristen Bell answer questions from fans asking for advice. Betty's advise might not be what you expect. * FUNNY OR DIE: (3:00) In this behind-the-scenes interview spoof, Jaime Lee Curtis, Betty White, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman and Kristen Bell discuss the movie when things get tense between the actresses eventually boiling over into a cast fight. * BLOOPER DANCE PARTY: (5:18) On-set antics abound as the cast dances to their own beat. * ADDITIONAL DELETED SCENES: (27:22) Director Andy Fickman provides intros to his deleted scenes (optional). "Good Morning Sunshine," "Grandma Bunny's House (featuring Betty White)," "Meet Georgia King (with Betty White)," "Gail's Shower/Ramona's Dress," "The Compost Heap (with Betty White)," "Covered In Lard (with Betty White)," "Bridal Shower (with Betty White)," "After The Fiasco, "Sharing A Room," "Photo Album Memories," and "Riding The Silk."EXTRAS:"You Again" comes with a slip over case and a DVD of the film. The DVD is presented in widescreen (2:40:1), English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 and with subtitles in English SDH, French and Spanish.JUDGMENT CALL:When it comes to filmmaker Andy Fickman, he's a filmmaker that loves to have fun during the making of a comedy film and knows how to make the talent and crew have a good time while filming. He brings a family atmosphere behind-the-scenes and I have watched enough "behind-the-scenes" material from his films to know that people love working with him.And as I have enjoyed his films such as "Race to Witch Mountain" and even "The Game Plan", "You Again" is one of those films that has that "Mean Girls" type of vibe. It's a comedy popcorn flick that you just sitback and enjoy and understand that you're going to see some crazy moments, kitschy moments and if you enjoy any of the talents in this film, just enjoy it for what it is.With that being said, the film has not received great reviews. Many have blasted the film as being contrived, embarrassing and just not cool! For me, I found "You Again" to be watchable, funny and also quite amusing as I enjoyed seeing Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver together in a film. It was great to see Betty White once again a comedy film and as for Kristin Bell, sine her appearance on "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", despite becoming a serious actress post-"Veronica Mars", we are seeing her in films such as "Couples Retreat" and "When in Rome". I'm sure she's a versatile actress but it seems that she has been pigeonholed in comedy films and for the most part, it works. What doesn't work is the screenplay. The film as mentioned earlier has a feel of "Mean Girls 2' and also "Freaky Friday" minus Lindsay Lohan, we get Kristen Bell as Marni as she goes tete-a-tete against Yustman's Joann. The same for Curtis' Blair and Weaver's Ramona. And while these rivalries are fun to watch, it's the little things that are peppered into the story that are just ridiculous. For one, the storyline of Joann's ex-boyfriend Tim working with the wedding planner and then going teary-eyed of how he was once engaged to Joann during their marriage ceremony was just ridiculous. And one thing that even furthers the kitschiness is when Joann and her friends start performing a dance routine to Britney Spears' "Toxic". The routine wouldn't be so bad if the friend's weren't pregnant. It just didn't seem right at all. Also, just the sheer fact that Darryl Hall & John Oates music is a big part of this film (and yes, they make an appearance in the film), the film is about young people who graduated high school in 2002 and are now professionals working careers in 2010. While, I can see my '80s classmates going crazy for Hall & Oates, I just don't see any Generation Y young adults clamoring for Hall & Oates. Perhaps Flickman was hoping what a TV show liked "Glee" and "Laguna Beach" did for Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", people would feel the same for Hall & Oates' "Kiss on Your List".But with that being said, having watched Kristen Bell in "When in Rome" and "Couples Retreat", you come into this film not exactly expecting an Academy Award performance. If anything, I was expecting to see the cast just come together and have fun and "You Again" does have its moments of fun.If anything, I know for some critics, the film was painful. But at the same time, I've read one critic who wrote about how the film was an insult to intellectuals. And if any intellectual was going to see this movie and expect something deep and compleat, well, I suppose they are going to be disappointed.I have always said in my reviews of similar comedies, especially when it comes to Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell comedy films, these are films meant to get away from reality, enjoy your popcorn and have fun for 90-120 minutes. The same can be said with "You Again". It's definitely kitschy but it's also fun. If you are fan of Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver and Betty White, you can't help but enjoy the ride and see where these women are going to take you.Sure, the Hall & Oates scene may make one feel embarrassed but it's not different from Jennifer Garner's Michael Jackson "Thriller" dance in "13 Going On 30'. Embarrassing as it may be, it's probably one of the funner moments of the film because if you grew up with the '80s music, you can't help but sing along to it and embarrassing your family members while you are singing the song while watching the film at home.As for the Blu-ray release, "You Again" is fun, especially with the special features and seeing Fickman and crew having fun during the shooting of the film and once again seeing the women of "You Again" just having fun with each other, especially Betty White during the "Funny or Die" special feature.Overall, "You Again" is a film that achieves its intended result of being a comedy popcorn flick. It is contrived, it is embarrassing but yet it can be fun, that is...if you are open to these type of comedy films.

Not You Again

At first blush, YOU AGAIN seems like it might be an endearing screwball comedy. Marni (Kristen Bell), once a four-eyed high school scrapmouth mercilessly picked on by J.J. (Odette Yustman), the chief Mean Girl, is now a successful Vice President of Public Relations. She returns home for her brother's wedding, only to discover that her brother is marrying J.J. (now Johanna), who claims not to remember her from High School. The first half of YOU AGAIN is primarily about Marni's attempts to get Johanna to acknowledge their former relationship (and apologize for it). While Marni fixates on her High School nemesis, her mother Gail (Jaime Lee Curtis) reestablishes her long-ago relationship with Johanna's aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), once her best friend and chief rival. Their rivalry reestablishes itself as well. A whole series of not very funny mean-spirited and spiteful incidents makes up the second half of the film, as Marni and Johanna and Gail and Ramona attempt to humiliate one another. The premise of YOU AGAIN is a simple one: People, particularly women, are immature, vengeful idiots who never emotionally outgrow their teenage traumas. In real life, these four would be embracing one another in forgiveness and perhaps reminiscing about how silly it all was. In YOU AGAIN, the injuries done don't only never get undone, they get perpetuated. Arguments about name-calling and prom dresses seem to obsess these women, who, after all, haven't been in High School in decades. Nobody is really happy in YOU AGAIN until everyone is miserable and the wedding is a shambles. Whoever the Producer was who thought this misogynistic abuse-fest would be funny needs to be in therapy. A lot of it, for a long time. The best, funniest roles are played by Victor Garber as Marni's Dad/Gail's Husband, who admits, "I don't know much about Girl World. As a matter of fact it seems rather mysterious and terrifying to me..." and Betty White (as Grandma Bunny) whose incongruous wisecracks provide 90% of the laughs---at the end, she meets Johanna's Grandmother (Cloris Leachman), HER former rival (and MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW co-star), with the greeting, "Oh, don't you look wonderful! I'm so sorry I missed your funeral last year!" Now, THAT really was funny. Unfortunately, the sheer meanness of YOU AGAIN doesn't give us many minutes of real laughter.

A LOOK AT GIRL WORLD

The father character gives a quote in the latter half of this movie that gives you an idea of the essence of the film: "I don't understand Girl World and I find it a little scary." This is a revenge comedy with an obvious female focus starring Kristen Bell who lived under the terror of the head cheerleader played by Odette Yustman in her high school days. She's a successful enough business type who comes back for her brother's wedding only to discover while on the plane ride home that she hasn't recovered from those wounds b/c said enemy is marrying her brother (head cheerleader is no longer going by her nickname so it isn't obvious at first). What entails is an attempt to prove that head cheerleader is putting on an act. The cast makes the show and there are actually some very funny moments within that can't be said of a lot of recent comedies I've watched. The surprise had an interesting enough twist to it but if you watch these types of shows all the time (I do not) then it may have been predictable. Nice connection between the two families having female rivalries over the generations. Curtis and Weaver arguably have the best opposing roles as friends gone competitors. Cameos by "The Rock", Patrick Duffy and Darryl Hall & John Oates. Tim, played by Kyle Bornheimer, did an awesome job with a reveal twist at the wedding party. CHARACTERS/DIALOGUE: B plus; STORY/PLOTTING: B to B plus; GIRL WORLD FOCUS: B plus; HUMOR: B to B plus; OVERALL GRADE: B plus; WHEN WATCHED: end of August 2011.

Jokes about a very delicate subject

I don't like how this movie just made something simple out of a topicso severe like high school bullying. I suffered from this myselfbecause I'm an Asian American and no, I could never forgive what thatbully monster did. I also know that many who bullied in high school areNOT sorry at all.I'm also disappointed at the protagonist's brother for beinginsensitive. Heck, I'm pretty sure I'd kick my fiancée to the curb if Ifound out what kind of monster she was.The lone thing I liked about this movie was the performance by Hall &Oates at the end. Skip this turkey.

HILARIOUS!

I saw "YOU Again" when it was in theaters and I have to say it was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. And it is not just a chick flick! I'm a guy in my 20's and me and my friends all enjoyed it. If you like physical comedy, you'll love this movie. Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver are top notch. So, if you want to laugh, buy this DVD.

Bell, Curtis, Weaver and White

I managed to catch most of this silly comedy the other night, and Ihave the feeling I was better off having missed the finale. Youngprofessional Kirsten Bell comes home for her brother's wedding, only todiscover he is engaged to an old high school bully. To make mattersworse, the bully's snooty aunt (Weaver) turns out to have been a rivalof Bell's mother (Curtis) in their school days. The comedy is forcedand artificial, but it was a delight to watch these gals in action.Betty White is thrown in for good measure as Grandma Bunny, and stealsevery scene she's in. I must admit I have an inordinate fondness forBell, a perky light leading lady whom I first became aware of in 2006'sPULSE, and she does a decent job here. Her character was a nerd inschool who blossomed into an attractive young woman, and she comes fullcircle when she must temporarily wear glasses, has her hair badly cutand sports facial blemishes from insect bites that resemble her long-ago acne. She makes it all believable. Kristin Chenoweth has a funnyscene as the wedding planner. See it for Curtis' high kicking from hercheerleading days.

next time if they want to combine avatar and titanic, count on me

you can save money for production but how can all the director andwriter save idea and plot, I felt all movie recently was just recyclejoke, this one was save the joke of my best friend'swedding,Monster-in-law,Mean Girls, bring in on again and again.......,using cliché was just too simple as the typical word to describe thiskind of junk copy, you know a cheer leader marry a 20's lawyer, he gota father of bride parent and a Sabrina sister was not a cute idea! Ihad such a thrill watching all actor making a wonderful fool all theway in final scene! don't make a bad sitcom in theater please or nexttime if you want to recycle other classic movie , count on me, I willbe well prepare and provide more escapade!
