DONT DO IT!
I don't usually write reviews but I had to warn you! Don't watch this movie! Take it from those of us who were dumb enough to watch it!What a waste of time! Made no sense! The husband was the only good actor. Horrible movie!!!

Greatly acted, filmed, and produced. But a poor David Lynch copy
Having read great reviews about this movie on the box I decided that itdeemed to be an interesting tale. Very topical the film demonstrates amother's total loss of her son following a Tsunami. After seeing avideo-cam demonstrating human poverty in Burma she sets out with herreluctant husband to locate their son. This movie tries to tackle three things. Having a supernatural element,a mind loosing to madness with a dash of mafia and human body/body parttrading. The things I cannot fault the movie for is the acting nor thelocations. Many of the influences are borrowed from Apocalypse Now andLost Highway. The latter is of course a classic for inner torment andmadness, the former an epic in futility to Lord Of the Flies styleending. What is a Vinyan? It's a lost and tormented soul, normally of the deadthat tries to find its way back to the light. In the movie it's usedmore for some form of supernatural almost "Siren" or "succubus" thattorments the living. This is given credit in some parts, but neverreally followed up to a conclusion (or edited out). You get to termsthat there's supernatural references in some drawings which point tothis. There's another encounter that again seems to suggest somepresence around one of the characters. But the trail goes cold. There's a lot which the characters do, especially the female lead thatyou really need to ask "WHY" are you doing this. Examples includeswimming after a boat that's a few miles away, heading off into ajungle without food, possessions and not trying to barter somethingwith the locals. Where were they going to go exactly? Why didn't theyfollow the river a source of food as well as a more than likely way toget rescued. For the smart people they are, they make some dumbdecisions and near the end I wanted them both to die! Overall, if you'dlike to watch a movie about madness and the Burmese child abandonmentthen watch this. There are a host of other better scripted and finallyedited movies. Maybe if there's another 30 Min's in a directors cutthat answers these questions then I'll revisit it.The ending does not really make a lot of sense (as in well I could seethis coming). I'd recommend watching Lost Highway for the main themethis movie doesn't commit enough to. I'd recommend Apocalypse Now forthe locations and close finale similarity for this movie.

One of the worst movies Ive ever seen
I love suspense, thriller and horror movies. I saw the trailers forthis movie when it was in theaters, and it's trailers often came onfrom movies I rented. Sadly the trailer is the best thing about thismovie. There is no redeeming quality to the lead actress. I wanted toslap and shake her throughout the film. Several things happen that areso implausible that you have to keep saying to yourself, "It's only amovie - that makes no sense." I was so intrigued by the description ifthis film. The idea has a lot of potential, but the way it's handled isa bore. We laughed when we should have been scared and talked over the"scary" part. There is no suspense or thrill, and the only horror isthat I sat through the whole thing.

Trash, pure trash...
Well, I've been using IMDb for like 12 years now... As I'm not anexpert, although I'm very fond of movies, I've never bother to registeror to comment about no movie. One thing is really, really wrong about this movie, it's not an horrormovie, it's not a drama movie, it's not even a real movie.Be serious, A boy lost on a tsunami is the main plot? This one made me do it... This one is at my 1st place of a top 10 worstmovies I've seen on my entire life. Please, do yourself a favor, hitthe back button on your browser and forget that you've ever readsomething about this movie.

Vinyan
Hope seemed to be lost for The Bellmers after their son was washed away during a tsunami in Indonesia. However, they soon discover a video of a young boy that resembles their son taken from a small village in Burma, and they set off using any means necessary to bring back their child. A blaring title sequence opens VINYAN with an air of pretension that is carried on throughout the rest of the picture. Frabrice du Welz' English-language premiere is light on character, but heavy on aesthetic and atmosphere. The eerie psychological-thriller follows a similar plot progression to Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, traveling deep into the misty jungles and deeper into the darkest recesses of the human mind. Welz' camera goes into all-wheel-drive as it tears through the jungle paths and splashes into the sea right alongside each of the characters in a rough but calculated shooting style. Although Emmanuelle Beart and Rufus Sewell provide strong performances, their portrayals of the distant Jeanne and reactionary Paul garner little support in their hunt for their missing son. VINYAN's spooky settings and frightening look at human trafficking make for a unique watch, but the thin plotting and vague ending will leave many viewers wanting more. -Carl ManesI Like Horror Movies

Excellent!!!
This movie was fantastic! From beginning to end it draws you in andholds on tight! It is the story of a husband and wife whose son is lostto them in the tsunami. The mother comes to believe that her son isstill alive. They then begin an odyssey across the darkest and mostdesolate areas of Burma.Anyone who has ever loved a child will understand the depth a parentwill go through to save them. Initially the movie takes us with them ontheir painful quest to find their lost boy. But soon the searchingparents become lost in their own struggle. The ultimate ending isgripping and horrifying, yet understandable on a very basic humanlevel. You must give the movie a little time. Sometimes following theirsearch can seem drag you into their hopelessness. But soon enough, thetrue purpose of their quest is understood.

A boring VinyanI
I rented this film primarily on the basis of its stars, the beautiful Emmanuel Beart (Manon of the Spring; Coeur de Hiver) and Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist; Dark City). At first the suspense of trying to find their child was intense but as the film progressed, I gradually lost interest in whether they would find their child since it started to become very tedious watching them slough the mud and losing their connections. I looked at the "Special Features" and though it may have been pleasurable for the actors, this viewer was left in the lurch. The only thing that caught my interest at times was the lovely Beart who had a brief nude scene with Sewell but outside you may as well "Appocalypse Now" instead of this tedious film.

Complete Waste Of Time (You have been warned)
The movie is not even worth watching even if you watch for free. I am in the process of suing for my 1 hour 38 minutes of my life back. The whole movie is ridiculous. I want to kill the wife in this movie and everyone else that involved with making the movie. The husband in the movie did a decent acting job, but the script and story is horrible.

Beware of Children
Paul Belhmer (Rufus Sewell) and Janet Belhmer (Emmanuelle Béart) are parents who tragically lost their son in a tsunami six months ago. Lost as in lost, not as in dead. There was no evidence that their son was dead. Then one day, while at a charity event, they were shown a video of the poor and the helpless in Thailand. In the video, Janet believes she sees her lost son. She convinces Paul that they must do whatever they can to find that spot and find their son. Since the couple are English speaking Americans (I think), their journey to an unsafe location of Thailand is anything but easy. Lies, trickery, and heart-ache await for them on the search for their son.Wow. I could not believe how bored I was through out this movie. Wasn't even fun to watch with a friend and joke around kind of movie either. "OH GOD PLEASE JUST END" was probably shouted about 40 times between the two of us watching. It all started with the beginning credits. A lot of the words were turned sideways to be, I don't know, cool? Annoying right away. Then after the credits we see someone's J-Horror type black hair underwater for around 2 minutes with a very loud wave crashing static type of noise. I almost wanted to throw up it was so annoying. My friend started screaming "WHY WONT IT STOP!!!" I honestly fast forwarded through it because it just wouldn't stop. Then the movie FINALLY beings with big hipped Emmanuelle Béart walking out of the water. Ok here we go...now it's time for spooky stuff to begin soon. Charity event happens...we see video...we see what might be their son. Ok off we go. Gotta find the kid. Everything is going smooth...and then I get aggravated again. Daddy has to pay this guy 1.5 million to get a boat ride to find his son. I scream out "Yen?!" because seriously he got 1.5 million to pay this guy in like hours. Ok...just let it goes...it's a movie. And then there's a boat ride. Some freaky lady. Getting bored. Still boating. Then I'm thinking the movie is picking up, but no. After a somewhat sad encounter with some bad guys, we basically see the already unstable mom just break down into crazy land. More weird encounters happen, but nothing is really to shocking or even interesting really. While they parents go farther into Thailand, on boat, to look for their child, I felt like I was watching "Wake Up with Discovery Channel" because there was just way to much scenery being thrown in with no story. I honestly think there was 5 minutes of no story, while we just watched a boat go down a river in cool angles and then shots of trees and mountains and other things. Really boring. By the time we got to the end, I could care less what happened with the parents or the child. But oh was I wrong. After the oh so shocking/stupid ending of the movie, I honestly wanted to burn the movie for how much I hated what happened. Even though I absolutely hated the character Emmanuelle played, I loved her acting. She was really good at being a mother who has just completely lost it. Rufus Sewell was pretty good to I guess, except for his dumb drunk scene. I do want to say one thing though. I kind of felt weird at the end of the movie. Me and my friend were saying "Are they really doing that?" Basically, right before the credits we see Emmanuelle Béart being rubbed down in mud by like 20+ kids that are around like 8-12 years old. Rubbed down right on the [...] and back. For around maybe 30-45 seconds. I started laughing because these kids, you could see were thinking `HECK YEAH [...]!!" cause they were smiling all giddy like while constantly rubbing her [...]. That was a little weird. In the end, I would say, with all my heart, ignore this movie. I just don't see anything good about it. Yes it was kind of haunting and sad for the parents, but man the movie was just directed and edited badly I think. P.S. Finally one movie me and my Amazon bud Chris totally disagree on.

probably the worst movie Ive ever seen.
This movie was painful to watch. The only reason I kept watching was to see if the couple ever found their child. Well, that was a complete waste of time. The only memorable thing about this movie was the amount of tits shown & I will never get the image of about 20 young boys rubbing mud all over the lady & squeezing and groping her titties while she giggles and moans. Unless you are a pedophile, you will probably not like it.

A tormented mind makes the strangest turns
A father and a mother are living in Thailand, months after the tsunamithat destroyed so many lives there. They lost their son in the floodingand are halfway between hopeful and completely lost and refusing to gohome. When they hear the news of people selling children as slaves andsee a picture of what might be their son they go out to search for moreinformation.Starting as the painful search for a missing family member this filmclearly shows the choices one makes when faced with a problem one nevershould have to face. The desolation in the eyes of the parents isclear, the desperation of their choices is completely believable. Andfrom there it goes - as the search leads them over the dark rivers onecannot escape the pain as the two of them are slide deeper and deeperinto madness. Everything that happens matches the possibilities of asituation like this and that makes the film all that harder to chewdown on. It's a sad tale and the ending is strange, but fitting.7 out of 10 missing children

This is not a story!
I don't usually write reviews, but this film needs to be rescued fromthe grumpy hoi polloi who thought it was a horror flick and found it tobe more than they could probably handle. This film is being badlymis-marketed.This movie is exactly what it aspired to be. It conveyed something deepand meaningful. The question is, who would even want to understand sucha thing? It is not my kind of movie and I had no idea what to expectwhen I rented it, but I kind of got sucked into it. It gave me baddreams; it haunted me for a few days. This film reminds me a little bit of Apocalypse Now, the photographyand locations are stunning. There are scenes I will probably never beable to forget, and some I don't wish to. I think what makes this storyso frightening is that everything that happens in it is plausible. Thatis hard to accept for some people. From the opening scene, the imagery and sounds are stunning. To put itsimply: This movie is about what it really, really means deep down fora family to lose their child; is their any sadder thing to contemplate?I don't expect everyone to even be capable of remaining receptive tothis movie after the first half; it took work for me.Viewers who wish to see darkness as art will be very pleased. For thosewho prefer glam decadence and prepackaged fluff, go watch Requiem For aDream. For those who want nice, pretty stories, watch Rachel's Wedding.

Vinyan
This review is from: Vinyan (DVD) The trailer caught my eye so i bought the movie online few days later. Hmm... I'm not real sure what to say about it. I love French movies, especially the horror ones. I got confused and during the whole movie, Emmanuelle Beart said almost nothing and looked like she was in a heavy daze... a lady on a mission I should say. It's a mix bag for me. I think the movie was interesting and I would watch it again. You have to watch it and decide if it's good or not, cause I'm at a lost.

A One Note Song of Self Indulgence
VINYAN (apparently meaning 'drifting souls') is a film that calls forstamina and courage just to sit through it. The story is so meager, related by an ill-composed, repetitive script (Oliver Blackburn anddirector Fabrice Du Welz), that the only reason to not turn off the DVDafter the first 10 minutes is the hope that the fine actors EmmanuelleBéart and Rufus Sewell might make something of the simplistic idea. They don't. A couple (Béart and Sewell) lives in Thailand recovering from the lossof their only son Joshua in a tsunami. A video observed at a fundraiserseems to show (at least in the mother's mind) the presence of a stillalive Joshua in a jungle in Burma. From that point the sole line of thestory is the misfortunes the couple endure on a scam riddled journey toBurma to find their son. The ending involves a mountain of specialeffects and dreary children in silly makeup who supposedly representthe 'vinyan' of the title. The ending is one of gore and titillation invery bad taste. This movie is one to 'pass' when selecting DVDs formthe local shelves. Grady Harp

Not a horror film, just a drama about a crazy woman getting a mud bath
Well, yeah. That says it.From the description I expected somethingalong the lines of Children of the Corn, but in reality the scary feralchildren have very little to do with this movie, they just kinda showup at the end to rub mud on a naked woman's body. Most of the movie is about the mundane, anti-climatic journey to thehome of these not so scary feral children(who we only get to seebriefly) so a crazy wife can have them rub mud on her naked body. You see, a rich couple's son died not so long ago. The mom is obviouslynot coping well and going nuts as a result. But she convinces herhusband to pack a bag with hundreds of millions of dollars so they canpay Asian gangsters and human traffickers to lead them to someforbidden Burmese district, just to make sure their son isn't alive. Sofor the first hour and 10 minutes people argue, there's lots of rain, someone gets shot, and there's a sex scene. 15 minutes before theclosing credits, feral children show up acting kind of creepy, thehusband gets killed, and yes I'll say it again... the children rub mudon the wife's naked body. And that's the end.

Best Most terrifying movie I have seen....
This is my first post on IMDb, and I had to register just to leave mycomment on coming from seeing this movie. I just got back from seeingit 25mins ago and in the end I was...let me say...just left sitting inmy seat with shock and awe. I, like many of the other posters here, hadnever seen a trailer of this movie and only knew it had something to dowith abductions, and outright horror, so I had to see it. I am a majormovie goer and see almost everything that comes out, and this movie byfar....takes the prize for utter shock and horror that leaves youmotionless in your seat from the moment the movie begins....This is based on a true story and in many ways, it needed to be told.Although, if you're an educated person, you would know the woman'sbattle in the far east (and of course, right here on our main landsometimes too) but the way director Peitre Nowrasteh presents thematerial is terrifying. Getting the viewer's attention is the easiesttask when performing such an act of honesty and raw natural spiritdemonstrated by Emmanuelle Béart and Brutto Marno. Those two arebrilliant in their respective roles. The film is gripping and intense with a heart-wrenching third act butit's so vicious, you might need to disengage from the cinematicexperience just give yourself a dose of reality, whatever your realitymay be. Emmanuelle Béart Aghdashi heads up this tragic and ferociousfilm. This is a MUST see for anyone that doesn't mind "Fiction+RealityShock" ...must I say more, just please go see the film, it is a TRUEclassic of unadulterated horror, much props to the director and allcast who played in this unbelievable (horror) film!

much better than average
I can see how this is not to everyone's liking however I truly thinkthis is an above-average film. Very well done overall. Excellentacting, beautiful cinematography, intense mood and a realisticdocumentary feel.It is way better than most "blockbuster" films in this general categoryalthough I agree with most reviewers that it doesn't quite fit nicelyin the "horror" genre. It is not full of cheap scares. Instead itrelies on a heavy atmosphere of dread to instill a feeling of uneasethroughout. It could be described as slow perhaps, to some, yet I did notpersonally sense that it was overlong. It kept me quite engrossedthroughout.I highly recommend this intelligent, skillfully made film.

Not one single redeeming factor except that it finished
Like others who registered simply to leave a review I too did the same.I just sat there incredulous that it was possible to raise the money tomake this abomination. I do not know where or how to berate this movieso lets start with some technical aspects.I see that they used film but the incompetence of the grading, developing, colourisation needs to be seen to be believed. It lookedlike they used digital cameras and then a really cheap grading systemto add grain. Sound was appallingly mixed, badly balanced and careless. It seems they had no access to ADR facilities or the main actorsrefused to be involved. Editing was sloppy and needs serious tighteningup. Direction was lacking in every way, it seems there was a shooting ratioof 1:1 so you got stuck with whatever you ended up on the first take. The characters were so badly portrayed I had no empathy or interestwhatsoever for them and the consequences of their actions. Talk aboutwooden I began to poke my screen. I am sure the actors do not talkabout this movie when people ask them what they have doneWhat the hell was going on with that on the side 'love interest? Wheredid that lead to ,why? Pointless. Who cares? The script and plot were laughable and incoherent leaving you withnothing. I am losing the will to live just thinking about the trite, inconsequential, schoolboy, badly thought out, improbable nature ofwhat I saw. As for the last scene my jaw hit the ground as I realised, yes they could reach depths that would top the previous drivel.Anyhow I have wasted enough time .I am rarely driven to write something like this so I guess that is somemeasure of success but I am furious to have wasted my precious timewatching this garbage. I am furious that this proves without a doubtraising money to make a film is nothing to do with the film and I amfurious that there must be so many other so much more worthwhile thingsthat are not being made. Are the people who put this together professionals? Have they madefilms before? Is this a rich kid trying something out? Anyhow the long and the short if it is watch paint dry instead, do notwaste your time with this film. Do not support this level ofincompetence in case they go on to make more. I am astounded that there are reviews that rate this movie highly, maybe there are two movies with the same name. I wish I could vote 0out of 10.

Among The Best
In a mysterious forest in Thailand, many suicidal youths disappear andrescue teams can not find the way out even with compass. The ambitiousreporter Emmanuelle Béart is making sensationalist journalism exploringthe deaths in the forest. Her boyfriend and botanist Rufus Semell isdeveloping a means of communication with plants. Meanwhile, DetectivePetch Osathanugrah is investigating the rape and death of a woman andthe main suspect is Teerawat Mulvilai. The detective contacts Béart-requesting her support trying to communicate with the trees around thearea where the woman was murdered. They resolve the case and Béartbecomes famous; when her child vanishes in the forest, Béart and Semellseek her out."Vinyan" is a deceptive and boring movie of Fabrice Du Welz. Theterrible and laughable story is so ridiculous and absurd that does notdeserve any comment. My advice: do not spend your time and moneywatching this awful flick. My vote is two.Title (Brazil): "Natureza do Mal" ("Nature of the Evil")

Grim jungle yarn
VINYAN is a grim and gloomy film that details a couple's spirallingdescent into madness as they venture into a jungle hell in search ofthe child they lost during the south-east Asian tsunami in 2006. LikeAGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD and APOCALYPSE NOW before it, you know withVINYAN that there's going to be no happy ending, and much of thesuspense is derived from the ever-worsening situation of the leadcharacters: watching them gradually leave society behind only touncover unspeakable horrors in the jungle is never less thandisturbing. The film boasts not one but two strong performances: Rufus Sewell isthe straight man and Emmanuelle Beart (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE) hisunstable wife, never the same since the loss of their child. Had otheractors been cast in the roles I might have lost interest, but these twokept me watching. That's good, because the direction isn't that strong:Du Welz goes overboard in his attempts at style and I found his artycamera-work to be more of a hindrance than a help as the storyprogressed. Eventually, there's a twist at the end and the introductionof some visceral horror elements that I wasn't entirely happy about: tobe honest, I didn't necessarily think that they had a place in thismovie, but they're here all the same and at least they give a sense ofclosure to an otherwise meandering production.
