Both sides make for an exceptional film!

Unthinkable forces you to think. If you ever wanted to know both sides of the controversy on human torture to save lives than this is the film to see many times over. This film actually accomplishes both sides but more importantly, it will make you feel both sides of the issue. I will go further; if you watch this movie, you will learn something about yourself. As for me, I learned, I am glad I am not in the position to have to make the choice to torture people to save others. I pray those who do are as strong, rational and logical as the character “H” is in this movie. Unthinkable is in its own class of films up there with Amadeus.

Well balanced from both points of view

ALERT: This may contain spoilers but I hope to write this in a way thatit doesn't. But of you have read the synopsis Im not giving anythingaway so its safe to read although not advised for the woolly minded. The movie centres around one man who has planted three nuclear weaponsin three US cities set to go off in less than four days and hisinterrogator (Samuel L Jackson)and their relationship if it could becalled that. The only obvious politically correct facet of the film was that the badguy was an American convert to the Muslim faith and i do understand whythe film-makers chose to go down that route. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Its a question of what are we(or one individual) prepared to do in order to save the lives ofmillions no matter how distasteful those actions may be. I think youget the idea. Interrogator vs Terrorist. SJ is a no compromiseInterrogator, Michael Sheen is the Terrorist and Carrie-Anne Moss playsthe hand wringing conscience filled FBI agent demanding we keep ourhumanity intact. Needless to say she is horrified at how far SJscharacter will go to extract the information needed to save millions oflives. A very interesting sidebar to the story which I thought couldhave been put to more use was SJ's wife played by Lora Kojovic. Aformer Bosnian who had suffered greatly at the hands of her neighboursduring the conflict and who herself was no stranger to what evilhumankind kind can get up to. I thought a little more interactionbetween her and Carrie Ann Moss, the childless, unmarried, no partnerFBI agent would have been interesting. Of course her background andexperiences explained why she could be married to such a so calledmonster like SJ and have his children. In my world there is no question of which is the right course ofaction. Only the woolly minded would actually allow millions to dieinstead of using any form of torture to extract the information. Buttorture does work, always has, and always will. The hand wringers wouldgive the guy an ice cream, some popcorn, and some DVDs to watch hopinghe would see how nice they really are and tell them where the bombs arewhilst outside millions have just been vaporised as the bomber finishesoff his ice cream. But as long as our good human nature is intact thenthose millions of lives don't matter such is the hand wringing mindset,a point made in the film by Carrie Ann Moss.Yet, a good number of reviewers are adamant that there is nojustification for torture even in such circumstances. Many here areoffended at the idea of torturing one man to save millions, but quitefrankly I don't believe them because they have never faced such areality and they simply like to think their more enlightened than thoseof us who would advocate doing what is necessary in such a situation. But I know that if they or their families were in the zones about to bevaporised then they would be screaming at Samuel Jackson to do whateverit takes to save them and their families. Put it another way. If one of my children was taken hostage and I foundthe person that had my child hidden away somewhere and was not going togive me the information to find my child there is nothing, and i meanabsolutely nothing I wouldn't do to get the information out of thatperson to save my child. Now contrast this with millions of lives. Doyou people who sit there advocating this movie is so terrible becauseof its content really believe that one mans lives is worth millions. Doyou really believe that your humanity would remain intact if youallowed those bombs to go off because of your supposed morals. Ofcourse it wouldn't. You would be ashamed to live the rest of your livesknowing that you advocated the death of millions of men, women , andchildren just so your conscience would be clear. But it wouldn't beclear. Advocating such large scale misery would haunt you for the restof your life. In a matter of hours your morals would vanish because ofthe suffering and deaths of millions. One man's life would not satisfyyour conscience unless you were actually a sadist.Someday you may very well see that mushroom cloud (hopefully not toclose) and see the utter devastation and misery even a very small yieldnuclear weapon can do and your whole world would come crashing down andso will your perceived moral high ground. It is a fact that Russia hasnot only lost weapons grade plutonium they actually have a couple ofnukes missing. These are well documented facts. Someone wants to get ahold of them and use them, you can be sure of that. So whilst this iscurrently just a fiction, I and many others who closely followpolitical shenanigans around the world are in no doubt its not aquestion of if, its a question of when. Its a difficult movie to review without giving the story away becausethe premise of it is actually very simple. However, Samuel Jackson dida great performance taking on a role I would bet many wouldn't have. Ienjoyed it for the very fact that there was a reasonable element ofreality and both sides of the argument were represented fairly. Ofcourse that's what's annoyed the bleeding hearts. They expected it tobe fully against any form of torture but the reality is in this worldgood and bad people are being tortured all the time. From where Istand, as long as its the bad ones who wish me harm I can live withthat

Not believable, too many mistakes, would not be handled this way.

I was going to give Unthinkable 3 stars but the more I thought about this movie, the more mistakes I found and the more things I disliked. Biggest problems are that neither Jackson nor Moss are believable. Jackson's character does not come across as a hard hearted torturer, Moss's character comes across as concerned but befuddled. I like and respect both actors but neither fit the parts they were given. Fundamental question is; Would you sacrifice a terrorist and his family to save millions of lives and save thousands more from unbearable torture as a result of a nuclear explosion? I would without hesitation. And we are doing this every day and have for many many years. I'm not going to sacrifice any of my family for anyone. They simply do not deserve to suffer and die for anyone else. I also could not bear to be the one responsible for the agony of thousands of survivors burned by nuclear fire if I knew I could have saved them. Could you? Assume a muslim terrorist is flying to New York with an atomic bomb on board and plans to detonate it in the heart of New York. But onboard he has his family (wife and 3 children). He also has 20 innocent school children onoboard. What do you do? Shoot the plane down and save millions? Let the plane crash and kill everyone on board and millions in New York? Would I push the missile launch button? The other problem with this movie is that it is so far from realism that I cannot determine whether this was intentional or incompetence. And the constant vacillation by the characters involved with terrorist torture is hard to accept. One minute they are all about saving millions then the next they aren't. The whole torture scenario seems so far from reality that I doubt the writer did much real research. And that makes the latter part of the movie ludicrous to say the least. And at one point near the end, Brody (Moss) says something like "let the bombs go off" rather than killing the terrorist's children (to find the bomb's locations). To me this is cowardice. How can she let millions of innocent people die only because she doesn't know them or seem to care about them. Fundamentally, everything about this movie is about incompetence. The incompetence that allows a terrorist to put nuclear weapons in major cities, the incompetence of government agencies in finding them, the incompetence of those tasked with getting the answers from a terrorist. The ending of this movie is what really drove the rating down to 1 star. There is no ending. Either the writer was too lazy or too incompetent to come up with one or decide on one. This is one of those movies that leaves it up to the viewer. Not what I pay to watch a movie for. I want to see an ending, I want to see what exactly the writer had in mind but to me, this writer had nothing.

as a Muslim...

The story, the direction, the acting, the reactions... almostexcellent.... But the point i wanna talk about, is that there is nosuch film without real big purposes, or a message they wanna deliver..some thinks it is a trying for explaining the views of the "persons"that are doing such "terror" activities.. But i don't think so.. Ourpeople are either simple, in case of thinking and understanding wordsand what is hiding beyond words, or some, and they are few, has a deepunderstanding.. And for both kinds of people, this film is giving anegative sign about people who did, and trying to do, as they suppose, such explosions or whatever.. And again and again, they arerepresenting these "persons" as they are Islam itself.. In the otherhand they are showing in this film that "Helen" is representing the"kind face" of USA, but there are some "persons" are using terroragainst terrorists, and according to US' "principles" they are "bad"even they can be "understood".. Simply i wanna say, there are "some"Muslims are doing this, but this is not "Islam",, as there "bad"Americans, but they don't represent the real soul of America..I suggest everybody to search more deeply about the writers of thisfilm and the director.. And please, search about who is "Oren Moverman"and what is his role in this film..all best for everybody..

WHOA

This is the best movie I have seen ever. The level of skill that went into writing this script is absolutely unfathomable, this movie keeps you absolutely absorbed, unable almost even of breathing while you watch the events of this excellent piece of cinema come to life on the screen. Micheal Sheen and Samuel L Jackson both give mind-numbingly phenomenal performances that both actors have never before been kind enough to grace us with. This movie is so thought provoking and profound it freezes my mind in a state of disbelief, knowing that I had never heard of it; nor had or have most of the world. One word sums this move up OSCARS, and yes I mean multiple.

A danger to kids

A tortured and detained terrorist watches on as his two kids are set to be punished, tortured and hurt by a crazy manic (another type of terrorist himself)posing as a good american. The gov't later decides to hush hush the project that has many lives at stake. How this film pass scrutiny and a rating board is beyond me. Terrorizing kids is dreadful, even if its pretend.Grade D for danger and dreadfulSim "nothing but the truth" "Rendition"

The tea party movement really isnt helping

Unthinkable is a not very satisfying variation on the old "good guy""bad guy" cop interrogation story theme. I totally advocates thehypothesis that modern Humans are the result of genetic intervention byGreys from another star system, and believes that there has been asustained program to crossbreed Greys and Humans over the centuries. The Mexico Starchild skull constitutes empirical evidence in support ofmy standpoint.I believe a lot of Western movie-watchers miss the point of Bollywood. If it's realism you want, watch the "Apu" trilogy, "Earth," "SalaamBombay" or "Fire," The typical image of a Grey, given that it wouldhave evolved on a world with different environmental and ecologicalconditions from Earth, is too physiologically similar to a human to becredible as a representation of an alien. The physical appearance of a Grey does not represent a real flesh andblood creature, but that it is instead a byproduct of the humanimagination. With the Grey's most distinctive features representingeverything that modern humans traditionally link with intelligence.³The aliens, however, do not just appear as humans, they appear likehumans with those traits we psychologically associate with intelligenceIf you were to plot the physical differences between an Tea Bagger anda human, and then were then to apply these differences directly to ahuman model, the resulting human would strongly resemble a Grey. Thisis a great movie but it will be a little much for the "light weights"as you can tell by some of the reviews. Samuel Jackson does it againwith his hard playing and tough roles.Bollywood is for light, escapist entertainment, and as such,Unthinkable is a violent, intelligent, suspense "mystery" of sorts.Greys, along with many paranormal myths and legends throughout history, are the telepathic manifestation of the collective consciousness of acommunity or culture. He proposes that the physical form of the Grey isthat of a malnourished human being, not an alien, and that Greys may bea manifestation of guilt felt by the developed world over the plight ofthe developing world. Doesn't feel like a Hollywood movie at all, nostupid happy endings and snot bubbles.

Simple inculcation of FEAR thats it !

Out of all the movies made in Hollywood out of the urge to supposedlyexpose terrorists, this movie happens to the weakest on so many groundsthat the grounds can go out of count. The plot totally falls apartevery time the director intentionally or unintentionally tries to bringin a twist to the concept. Half way through the movie any smart viewerwould just give-up hope of making any sense of it all since the themeof the movie is so unreal on occasions it's laughable. For example theidea that Samuel L. Jackson who starts out to be a person very wellprotected by the US. government is just a TORTURE specialistinterrogator with senseless aggression and yet he is positioned suchthat he may go out and ridicule the US Army General to his face onnumerous occasions, kills the innocent wife of the terrorist infront ofeveryone with no fear of repercussions, assaults a US Marine etc.No insight being given on how a Christian born US Army soldier, MichealSheen, having served in Iraq for his country turned into not only aMuslim but a Muslim of such extreme believes that he would go out andbomb numerous cities of USA just to have the US President announcewithdrawal of US Troops from Muslim lands. The terrorist is so smartthat he single handedly makes Nukes to blow up number of cities withoutany HELP!, plans entire step by step execution of the plan, fools CIA,FBI, MI and yet cannot ensure his family leaves the country before theshowdown, gets himself intentionally arrested when there wasn't anyneed to, without a reasons holds back his demands until half waythrough the movie which when he reveals appear so simple that theycould have been made the title of the movie "WITHDRAW THE TROOPS". Somany loose ends to this movie simply makes it yet another PROPAGANDAmovie to make US citizens believe that all Muslims are terrorist andthe US government has every right to treat them however so they wishto... Well this to me simply gives a very extremist view of the USforeign policy... A movie worth putting down the garbage can.

We Are Worse Than The Terrorists!

I'm ashamed of my country after watching this film. How could we have created something so didactic, so heavy-handed, so phony from the first minute to the last? Blech.

13 May 2012

Wow and Double Wow!

This review is from: Unthinkable [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) If you love edge of your seat tension, you will love this movie! From beginning to end Sam Jackson is fantastic as the agent who tries to break the bomber's spirit. The rest off the cast are simply the best. If I could give is movie 10 stars I would.

12 May 2012

Thought provoking.

I didn't expect much from this straight-to-DVD movie, but was surprised by it's great acting, story, and ability to make me question my opinions. This film is difficult to watch at times, and covers controvercial material, but It doesn't really take a side on the issue, just gives you food for thought, while being a great drama. i imagine this didn't make it to theaters, because many people in this country see only in black and white, and are offended any time America is portrayed as a potential bad guy. Those who understand that life is filled with "gray areas" will enjoy this film, if you're a "Patriot" from a red state, you may be offended. One thing's for sure, you'll be thinking about it long after it's over.

What a waste

I can't believe I wasted an hour and a half on this dumb movie! The story had a little potential (and i do mean a little) but the acting was terrible. Samuel Jackson was his old cocky, he knows everything, everyone around him is dumb, he is a bad-ass, he is always right and everyone around him is wrong self. Now I understand why this movie never hit the big screen. I sure am glad I rented this on the Red-Box, and only payed a buck for it...I would of been really ticked if I had payed anything more to watch this disaster.

12 May 2012

Pretty decent effort

Just saw its around 30 minutes ago and have to say that it kept meglued to the screen. Taunt thriller, a bit predictable but not a badfilm over all. I am surprised i had never heard of this until a fewdays ago, when i caught a review while surfing the net.It also asks some important questions, like how far would we go toeliminate a perceived threat. The answer of course is that most of uswould go all the way if we believed the threat was real. This alsomeans that if someone makes us believe that there is a real threat, that person has the power to unleash the animal within us.I also think this is also a complex propaganda film, because it triesto justify the atrocities of super powers like USA by showing thepublic a very real threat and sort of putting them in the hot seat sothat they (the public) also come to the conclusion that extreme tortureeven of little kids is OK if it results in saving lives of US citizens.Well 24 was a big hit on TV (worldwide, not just USA) and it alsoglorified and justified torture,................ but anyway, i enjoyedthe 1 hour and 36 odd minutes of it so my recommendation is watch itand enjoy the story but do not believe the propaganda. We need a bit of humanity after all, if we want to be called human;because no matter what we call ourselves (Black, White, Yellow, Red,Muslim, Jew, Christan, Hindu etc.)the fact is that there is only onerace i.e. The Human Race.

A lot of interesting moral questions and no real clear cut answers.

'UNTHINKABLE': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five) Suspense thriller about an FBI agent and a interrogator who worktogether, with vastly different methods, in an attempt to find thelocation of three nuclear bombs set to go off in the United States. Thefilm stars Samuel L. Jackson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Michael Sheen. It'sdirected by Gregor Jordan and written by Peter Woodward. Despite it's Alist cast and good reception from critics and fans the movie was notgiven a theatrical release and went direct to video last June. It's amuch better film than you'd probably expect given it's weakdistribution.Sheen plays an Islam convert who records a video message and sends itto the US government, threatening to detonate three nuclear weaponsinside the US in less than a week. He then allows himself to becaptured. Moss plays the FBI agent, Helen Brody, in charge of his case.Jackson plays 'H', a secret special interrogator who is only used bythe government as a last resort. When he's brought on to the case hisviolent and ruthless interrogation methods really clash with AgentBrody's more humane style. The movie plays out with a lot of interesting moral questions anddoesn't really give any clear cut answers. It repeatedly wants theviewer to ask itself 'do the ends justify the means'. Jackson's 'H'character is not a likable guy and he does a lot of atrocious thingsbut I don't think he's supposed to be viewed as a hero. In the end werereally supposed to ask ourselves if he's any better than the movie'smore obvious villain and are any of the other characters either, whoare more than content with letting 'H' do their dirty work. The movieis definitely very interesting and intriguing and effective at what itattempts to do. A film with a statement to make rather than just posinga bunch of questions would have been better but the film still works ina way as it is.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m3RUjISnYI

Intriguing and suspenseful

This movie kept my interest and I enjoyed the acting. It's a rough story not for the squeamish. For mature audiences. I don't recall any gratuitous language, sex or violence. Even though this has violence in it, it's not exaggerated and it's not about blood, it's about the story.

08 May 2012

Fantastic on so many levels

It's understandable why this film was not released due to its controversial nature, but it's definitely a film not to be missed. I was emotionally awakened, and...no matter how much I've read and discussed in class the subject of terror and torture, I never fully understood the moral dilemma 'til I watched this movie. The film moved at a good pace with a phenomenal cast, and the story was told in such a provocative way that I couldn't tear my eyes off the screen half way through. The anticipation of the torture made me uneasy, but, I felt I had to keep watching to get the point of the movie. When I simply read about torture, I felt disconnected to it, and was confused as to which side to take (torture/kill a few, save a million, or don't torture/kill at all, but run the risk of killing a million indirectly). However, now I'm leaning towards the lesser evil, because I couldn't let a million people die if I could help it, even if I have to kill a few. I'd have to break myself emotionally to do it- and, even if it means children, although I don't know if I could actually do it when the time comes, but I wouldn't stop it if someone else did.Yeah, torture is wrong, but sometimes questioning/negotiating leads NO WHERE.Then what? Just let the bomb go off and kill ALL those people? It doesn't make sense. There's just too much to say, and I'd say this film did a great job in painting everyone as the villain and as the good guy.I'd say the real villains are those at the top controlling the minds of the masses using religion as the catalyst.

thought provoking, but difficult to watch

Steven Arthur Younger, an American ex-military man converted to Islam, has built three atomic bombs, and placed them in three cities toexplode in 4 days. He has sent his family overseas, sent avideo-message to the Government and allowed himself to be captured. Heis taken to a secret military compound where he'll be tortured andinterrogated to learn where the bombs are. This movie reflects on the validity of torture against the so-calledWar on Terror, by indirectly asking these questions: 1/ Is torture everjustified? 2/ Does physical torture produce any piece of informationthat serves to safe lives? 3/ If you could save the world or hundredsof civilians from a bomb by torturing somebody, would that torture bejustified? 4/ If not, why it is allowed? 5/ If yes, is there any limitor point, even unthinkable, that cannot be trespassed? The main assumption taken by the story is that we live in adouble-standards hypocritical world that preaches one thing but doesanother, that wants the dirt to be removed by using the hands of theothers, so those ordering the dirty job have not responsibility on it.The movie brought to my mind many of the questions posed by a recentdocumentary "The Secret War on Terror"(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1866818/).Australian Director Gregor Jordan, British Actor-Scriptwriter PeterWoodward and Israeli writer Oren Movermam have guts to reflect on thesubjects this movie approaches, even more because the movie (a sort ofcomplement to the TV series 24) is filmed and produced in the USA.However, being so, you also expect it to be politically correct, and ata certain point it is.The good thing of the movie is that uses the different characters aspawns to make its point. Therefore, they are not linear or monochrome -nobody is innocent here, morally, but some of the characters arefranker and have more integrity than the others. However, the line thatseparates them is very thin, and is trespassed back and forward by thetwo main characters: H., the interrogator, and FBT agent Brody, whichare antagonists at the beginning, but two sides of the same coin at theend. H, the interrogator and torturer, actually hates his job, he iscynical about the clean-hands of those who want him to do horrificthings without taking moral or political responsibility; H. has a soul, and he is somewhat another victim of the system. Agent Brody is aserious and decent woman, but once the situation turns for the worstoutside, she too gets embedded and feels like torturing the terroristherself; she ends thinking that torture is justified if valid items ofinfo are got, otherwise not, but... that is not a position, really, that is still a dilemma. The terrorist, moreover, is not a dark-skinnedmiddle-eastern man, but a white sweet-looking American man, who loveshis family, his country and his religion, who is willing and preparedto be tortured to get what he wants.I found all the leading actors good in their roles: Samuel L. Jacksonas interrogator 'H', Carrie-Anne Moss as Helen Brody, and Michael Sheenas terrorist Younger (Yusef). However, Sheen and Jackson outshine therest. You cannot even believe that Sheen is the same actor who playedTony Blair in "The Queen", so good he is here. Jackson plays a verydifficult role with sensibility (if that is possible) and humanity. The atmosphere of the movie is aseptic and cold, distant and theatricalin a way. There is no warm colors or elements at all (beyond theblood), and it looks like part of a sci-fi grim future movie. However, that cold detachment is needed to follow what happens, because thelevel of violence is extremely high (although less gory you canexpect), very disturbing and depressing. The fact that H. has somehumanity and is a loving father, another victim of the system, sends adangerous message, and unintentionally excuses the torturer. The tempo of the movie is not good, and that affects it from midfootage until the end. I thought that the search for the bombs by theFBI was going to have more weight in the movie, as it was alsochallenging and interesting, but soon the viewer realizes that thiswon't happen. A more balanced approach (FBI approach and Militaryapproach combined) was needed, but the movie eventually opts for thesecond as main focus of the story. On the other hand, when the moviegets really-really interesting and challenging, when a new oh-wow twistappears in the story, the film ends. Ploff! As if the editor had cutthe movie before its time by mistake. By doing so, the viewer, or atleast me, wonders whether the director and writers had the balls toprovide an answer to the moral questions they present in the movie? With this end, the answer is no. However, bear with me - there is analternative ending. The alternative ending, actually the real ending (which is available inthe USA Blue-Ray and DVD's extras but not in the one I saw inAustralia!), shows that, after all, the writers and directors had theballs to give an answer to their questions and show that torture doesnot serve for anything if the terrorist has no moral or emotionalbreaking point, which is always the case. In fact, the end of themovie, the real one, says that the end does not justifies the means andit is a waste of time. You better look for the bombs! I guess theAmerican producers and the American establishment, or perhaps just thepublic, wouldn't be happy with that sort of ending.A thought provoking film, claustrophobic and difficult to watch.

Five stars only because its...

...a logical extension of "enhanced interrogation techniques" as were sanctioned by Rumsfeld-Cheney-Bush and their Justice Department minions' legal "torture memos" after 9/11. I do not at all mean that as a partisan statement. I say only that the film is a logical extension of what was then. Other reviewers have dissected what they take to be directoral and other flaws in this movie. To be sure, this film is not for the squeamish. Let me just add that the most "moral" line in the whole thing is toward the end when the lead FBI character anguishly cries in preference to the proposed logical final unthinkable "enhanced techniques" step, "...let the [eff]ing bomb go off!"
