Not a winner.

Touchback, directed by Ohio State alumnus Don Handfield, is a boilerplate sports melodrama enhanced by romantic music and clichéd aphorismsfrom the coach in the locker room. Kurt Russell is that coach and aboutas believable as any actor could be given the formula that demandseverything work out well. The fantasy element of this film is essentialgiven the flawed nature of the film.Scott Murphy (Brian Presley--35 years old, playing an 18 year old!)wins the state of Ohio high school championship in 1991 for hisunderdog team but suffers crushing damage to his leg. Without beingable to get that OSU scholarship, in subsequent years he questions hisfate as a limping farmer in his "backwater" village of Coldwater, Ohio, despite having a devoted wife, Macy (Melanie Lynskey) and two darn cutedaughters. Oh, yes, his mother (Christine Lahti) is also supportive inher own way. This being Hollywood, he magically is given the chance to relivechampionship year 1991 over again. It is, however not anywhere in theleague of It's a Wonderful Life. That do-over gives the film liberty to roll out every possible clichéabout the goodness of small town living, the importance of family, andthe evanescence of fame. None of those maxims is wrong; it's just thatthe music and the profound utterances lend an unreal gravity to asituation: underdog team, gifted but troubled quarterback, blah, blah. It's all happened before in movies and TV with coaches giving the sameinspirational speeches. It's unforgivable to have the quarterbacklooking at his beloved in the stands while he's figuring out the rightplay, and fantasy to have a 35 year old actor playing the lead.Touchback touches my heart the way all high school sports melodramasdo: I'm so American that the underdog motif starts me thinking aboutthe figurative element of sports victories in the face ofinsurmountable odds. Over 100 years ago, the odds were stacked againstwagon trains making it West, and today a much bigger opponent plays onthat same theme.Touchback adores Ohio State but never makes it to the cinematic endzone. Like the film's team, the film will slip back into forgettablehistory.

If I Could Do It All Over Again....

"Touchback" is not a compelling movie, although it is rife withcompelling ideas, which only makes processing my feelings for it thatmuch more difficult. It has some good things to say about the choiceswe make in life and learning to appreciate what we have; what's missingis a plot capable of supporting these messages fully. If you're goingto infuse an inspirational sports drama with the fantastical concept oftime travel, there's absolutely no call for half-heartedness. You haveto be completely audacious and commit to it fully. Otherwise, we in theaudience have no real reason to willingly suspend disbelief. To anextent, writer/director Don Handfield made an honest effort. The issueis, that extent should have been the entire film, not just specificscenes.Taking place in the blue-collar community of Coldwater, Ohio, where thepopulation seems permanently set at 2,700, it tells the story of ScottMurphy (Brian Presley), who was the star quarterback of his highschool's football team back in 1991. During the big game, his leg wasinjured beyond repair, forever ruining his chances of pursuing collegefootball, making a name for himself, and getting himself and hishard-working mother (Christine Lahti) out of Coldwater. Now in his latethirties with his left leg supported by a brace, he's a walled off andbitter man who numbs his pain with alcohol and grueling volunteerfirefighting. He'll stare at old home videos of his games withoutreally seeing them, and he'll secretly drive to a spot where he canwatch the current high school team practice. He's married to Macy (Melanie Lynskey), who was volunteering at thehospital at the time of his accident. With her, he has two youngdaughters, who only crave his affection. In a town that has nosedivedeconomically due to the closing of the local plant and the 2008recession, he has received a bad loan for acres of soybeans that aren'tgrowing fast enough and are about ready to fail. Unless he can turn aprofit in the course of one day, his home and all his land will beforeclosed. He has so much pride that he can't even bring himself totell Macy that they're in trouble. Knowing he has ruined not only hislife but also the life of his family, he drives to a remote spot, stuffs a rag into the exhaust pipe of his truck, gets back in, turns onthe ignition, and hits the accelerator. Black fumes seep in. A fewcoughs, and the screen fades to white. When Scott comes to, he realizes that his leg is no longer in a brace, that his beard is gone, that he's wearing jeans and a varsity jacket, and that everyone he once knew is back in his life again. Somehow, hehas been transported back to 1991. He's a high school student again! The catch is that he's aware of what will happen over the next twentyyears, which will make for some awkward conversational moments. Hereunites with his best friend (Marc Blucas) and his sexy high schoolflame (Sarah Wright), who, following the accident, will end up becomingan item. He also reunites with his coach (Kurt Russell), whose name,Hand, is an apt metaphor for his guiding words of wisdom. Mostimportantly, he will reunite with Macy, who at that stage of her lifewas a mousy member of the school band.I understand what the filmmakers are trying to do here. By making Scottaware that he has gone back in time, they're giving him the opportunityto reflect on his mistakes and alter his future – specifically duringthe big game, which he will play again. The point is to make him seethat life is about the living in the moment and not focusing on thepast or the future. The flaw is that Scott is lectured by charactersthat don't have the luxury of knowing what he already knows. I'm sureif any of them had gone back in time with Scott, they might have beenjust as tempted, if not more so, to change history. He is, of course, continuously sidetracked by his love for Macy. For her teenage self, this is a bit jarring; Scott has a hot cheerleader girlfriend and neveronce gave a plain girl like Macy the time of day. She has to wonderwhere this newfound affection is coming from.As well intentioned as it is, the film's positive, life-affirmingmessages are bogged down by an ending that provides plenty in the wayof emotional resolution but absolutely nothing in the way of logisticsor plausibility. I'm all for feel-good moments. In fact, I activelyseek them out. All the same, I prefer that they stem from scenes andsituations that actually make sense. And then there are theillusion-shattering casting choices, Presley, Blucas, Lynskey, andWright playing high school students despite the fact that they eachlook every bit as old as they actually are. Presley and Lynskey, forexample, are thirty-four, and Wright is twenty-eight. The most obviousis Blucas, who's now forty. "Touchback" has its heart in the rightplace, but it rarely uses its head.-- Chris Pandolfi (www.atatheaternearyou.net)

Amazing

Not a lot of people have seen this wonderful movie yet, which is why Ifeel like it is my obligation to tell those of you who have not, thatyou definitely should.Growing up in Sweden I guess there are people that know a lot moreabout the culture surrounding high school football in America andalthough I am a big football fan, the same is probably true for thesport itself as well. That said I think my point of view from theoutside just goes to show that you do not have to be an Americangrowing up in a football family to love this movie because it is aboutso much more than football.

Emotional experience

I wasn't at all turned on by the trailer, but went with my wife to ascreening here near Cleveland because it was free and I will seeanything football. My wife was less enthusiastic about seeing it, butcame because she wants me to see Lucky One with her next week and thatwas part of the deal. By the end of the movie, she was bawling. Sheloved it. Honestly, this movie was more for her than me, but it made usboth think about life and we had a pretty amazing conversation on theway home. All in all, I am giving it a nine because she thought it was a ten andI thought it was around an eight. It's a great date movie, if you go,take your wife or girlfriend.

Nice feel good movie

First of all I would like to say that I like these types of stories soI am a bit bias. It's the story about, in this case a man, who is notsatisfied with his life or at least so he thinks and who gets anopportunity to do it all over again. In this case it deals with a manwho had a promising future as a footballplayer but whose leg getsinjured in the finale game of the season that ended that prospect. Nowhe is farming soybeans and things don't go as planned. As I stated afamiliar story with an ending that will not surprise the seasonedmoviegoer. Never the less it's a really nice movie to watch it nevergets too touchy feely and stuff, it has some nice humor in it and theacting goes from oke to good. Seeing Kurt Russel play in a movie isnever a bad thing also I have to admit. I consider him a fantasticactor. In fact I think this movie would have been better if he hadplayed the older character instead of the coach because Brian Presleydoes not have the looks of neither a high school student nor that of afather of 2 kids. Don't get me wrong he does not do a bad job I am justnot buying it thats all but that is just my personal opinion. In all anice movie without any real surprises but if you like feel good moviesthen this one should give you that feeling. I surely felt it. To sumup, not truly original, nice acting and it leaves you with a warmfeeling inside, all in all not a bad effort. 6/10 from me.

starts slow gets better

It was a slow to get going movie, until an unusual twist about a thirdof the way in makes it get much better. Kurt Russell as always playshis part well. The part I can't understand with this movie, is thatwith an opportunity to change things, he didn't change much leavingeverything the same except for throw a pass to a player who had nevercaught one? but I guess that is why I don't write these movies. I nevercould understand why a high school football player places thosememories as the biggest or most important of their life. I am kind ofthinking big deal and who cares about these football days, but it doesmake for a decent movie, and it is unlike any of the others based onsimilar ideas. Not a must see but not a waste of time either. Worthwatching.

Terrible casting and makeup make this one of the worst films of 2011

¨A man looks back 15 years to the injury that ended his career as apromising high-school football player.¨ There are several great andinspiring football movies that have been made over the years and I'musually a sucker for those kind of sport movies because I love sports.Touchback however was not the case; it was a really poorly producedfilm with a bad script and one dimensional characters. The makeup wasterrible as well; there is one scene where we see an old Kurt Russelland the makeup is just so distracting. But the worst thing about thismovie was the casting. It just didn't work because you have some reallyold people playing High-school football players. I mean some of theseguys just looked even too old to be professional football players, theylooked like retired players. This was perhaps the weakest link that themovie had since the idea seemed interesting on paper, but it justdidn't work on film. Considering that the makeup was so bad I guess itwould be impossible to cast younger actors since half of the film takesplace 15 years after the main character suffers a serious injury thatends his football career, and the other half goes back to that moment. In a year where there have been great sport movies made like Moneyballand Warrior, this was just one forgettable movie, and perhaps one of myleast favorite films of the year. Director Dan Handfield is never ableto deliver a believable moment in Touchback, and the script written byhimself really didn't help either.Scott Murphy (Brian Presley) has been selected as the best High schoolplayer of the nation and has several college offers that would allowhim to finally leave the small town he's in. Under the guidance ofCoach Hand (Kurt Russell) he has taken his school to the Ohio statefinal and now they are facing one of the toughest schools which hasmore students in its High school than the entire population of histown. Scott sets up a winning drive scoring the final touchdown in thelast seconds of the game, but he suffers a severe injury that will endhis dreams of becoming a professional player. Fifteen years go by andwe see Murphy living in the same town working as a farmer. He is indebt and things don't seem to be working out for him although he hastwo beautiful daughters and a loving wife named Macy (Melanie Lynskeywho is better known for her role as Rose in the Two and a Half Mensitcom). His best friend from High school, Hall (Marc Blucas) is backin town driving a fancy Porsche as he has made it as a professionalfootball player. He also happens to be married to Jenny (Sarah Wright),Scott's former school girlfriend. Murphy is haunted by his past andthat injury that changed his life. Seeing how things are going so badfor him he decides to try to commit suicide, and while doing so hewakes up fifteen years in the past one week before the big game thatchanged his life forever. The story seems interesting and it has actually been done in othermovies before in different ways. The most recent that comes to mind is17 Again which starred Zac Efron. This one fails however due to the badcasting and a poor script. The movie is very predictable and at timesvery slow paced. It's too bad because Kurt Russell is a great actor andhe was completely misused here. The last time I saw him playing a Coachwas when he played the U.S. national hockey team Coach in Miracle.Productions between these two movies can't even be compared with eachother. Touchback is a very forgettable movie and one that I wouldn't berecommending to anyone. The movie is also very predictable and therereally isn't anything memorable or inspiring about it. It tries to bean inspirational sport movie, but if fails now that the bar has beenlifted by the numerous great sport films that have been released inrecent years.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/

An incredible twist to your everyday sports movie!

I loved this movie! A must see! Honestly, I would not have paid to seeit because the trailer was extremely hokey, which is why I am gratefulto have been given the opportunity to see a free advanced screening ofit. The trailed does this movie little if any justice. It usually takes a lot for me to like a movie, and I consider myself atough critic of both acting skills and story lines/plots. This movieexcelled in both areas! I even shed a few tears, which is a rarity!Don't be fooled by the lack of promotions, or noise about this movie. Iplan on purchasing it on DVD once its released. =) Take your friends and family to this enjoyable and heart-felt movie! You won't be disappointed! =)

Much better than Expected

I consider myself a movie buff and definitely a football fan, so Ididn't know what to expect from this movie. Understood the premise, guyis transformed back to his youth to relive a sports moment---insertclichés from every bad movie that uses that tired tactic. However, itworks in this movie and makes you forget it immediately and concentrateon the story. The lead character is searching for something and theaudience goes on the ride with him. There is humor throughout to keepyou laughing and plenty of tearful moments. The football moments arenot plentiful, but just enough. Probably the best family movie I haveseen in sometime. The words, "cheesy" and "corny" will be plasteredthroughout the reviews of this film. That is because it will becompared to "17 Again" and other movies of the like. I compare thismovie to no other, as I have never seen one that gets it right likethis one.

Works for me all in all a keeper

Mild twists and a touch of Sci-Fi to keep you involved. More importantis the off field story. Much more than anything. Apart from The onfield twist near the end that I wasn't ready for the off field story isenough to keep you hoping for a magical change. But the reality isenough to make you say 'yes!' at the end.Very earthy performances from the leads. Believable in every situation.Scott is well cast as an unassuming star,. Kurt Russell adds pullingpower to the credits and has not been cast without reference to hisability to play characters we can all relate to.Scott Murphy's character mirrors the perennially struggling farmers innot only USA but here in my home as well. He portrays admirably theshielded turmoil of men of the land fighting bad turns daily and thengritting , bearing and getting on with the job until all seems lost.Never allow this to impact his optimistic outlook for his children.Truly credible performance.
