An ideal super heroic fun movie!!
First of all i am not a Thor's fan,so i expected the movie to bebad(without good reason basically)...When i watched the trailer idecided to watch the movie...It turns out that Thor is one of the bestMarvel Movies in the last years!!It's a mix of fairytale(Asgard,Godsetc.) and super heroic story. The movie has the right doses of humor andit wasn't destroyed by some uncontrolled action(that's what happened inIronman 2, if you ask me)...As for the actors i really enjoyed seeingTom Hiddleston as Loki and i am looking forwards to see him again inAvengers...The only thing i disliked was the appearance ofHawkeye(completely useless for the whole story). In overall,i believeThor is great if you want to see a super heroic movie and have fun... 8stars from me...

Those who did not know Thor now know him
Marvel does it again with another A-quality screen interpretation ofthe comic book hero The Mighty Thor. The heart-stopping action, thedark family drama and the well-placed humor were all perfectly realizedon screen by Shakespearian director Kenneth Branagh. I wonder why theDC people could not do the same with their similarly iconicsuperheroes. (Really, Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern,? Please! But Idigress.)It is amazing that the two main characters Thor and Loki were played bynew actors who were unknown to me. Chris Hemsworth is perfectly cast asthe cocky Nordic thunder god. Not only does he look the partphysically, the way he acted out his character's arc is well-done andworthy of audience empathy. It was not forced nor corny. Tom Hiddlestonalso convincingly plays out his character Loki with theunpredictability this god was known for. Anthony Hopkins plays Odin byear, as he is well-known for. Natalie Portman, fresh from her Oscar forBest Actress, looks as beautiful as her character requires. It was alsoexciting to see a cameo by Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton ("Hawkeye")with his bow and arrow! The story is solid. Those of us who did not know Thor now know him andcare what happens to him. The fight scenes were very exciting. Thespecial effects were very good for the most part. For negatives, I didnot really like how fake Asgard looked and I did not like the metallicrobot used to attack the earth. The costumes on Asgard also reminded metoo much of various Bozanian bad guys from the old Voltes V cartoons. There were some inconsistencies about how Bifrost tele-porter works.Overall though, this was excellent and the first real big actionblockbuster of this summer. I did not even watch the 3D version.

Bombastic!! Emotional depth, smart yet fun as can be!!
This is a film that moves at lightning speed, (PUN INTENDED) egged onby Ken Branagh's bold direction. Thor takes its energy from characterdevelopment and conflict. The well paced action and conflict scenes arelike nothing you've ever seen before and that's saying something inthis day and age.Thor has real emotional depth way beyond what you would expect. It alsohas action and special effects second to none. After a while andbecause of the turn in story, you don't really think about thoseamazing effects, and that's a good thing. Instead, you're pulled into astory about people and that's a great thing.I like this comicbook anti-hero fallen god. He's gritty, primal, vainyet noble and somehow more real. The film does a great job of showingus how an arrogant son can come to grips with who and what he truly is.The movie draws the audience in with its confidence and it never letsyou go. There's no doubt that Natalie Portman was an important piece ofcasting because she brings the story down to earth. Thor meetsPortman's Jane Foster after he is banished from the home of the gods tolive among mortals. The audience can relate to what Jane isexperiencing and it grounds the film perfectly. That makes the actionseem more real and that's a tough balancing act. There are plenty ofscenes that you have to see to believe! This movie actually has a heartand a soul and a brain and I couldn't have asked for anything more.I'd rather a movie be too cerebral then too dumb. This film succeeds ona basic level. It jumps the boundaries of its genre to pull in viewerswith originality and inventiveness. Calling it a standard action filmdoesn't do it justice. It's surprisingly deep and takes the time to setitself up. A complete movie that really doesn't belong in the summerwith the likes of the brainless films.

Good but Could have Followed Comic Books Better
The movie was entertaining and my 11-year-old sons enjoyed it but Ithought it could have been longer since it only took Thor about tenminutes to discover humility after an eternity of arrogance. NataliePortman was fine as his love interest despite garbage-head reviews(professional reviewers have their heads so full of pseudo-intellectualtripe they are unable to enjoy a good shoot 'em up.) to the contraryand the supporting cast was really excellent. My sons rated it up therewith Skyline, Battle for L.A. and Priest. We are a Sci-Fi family. Mywife and I are Trekkers, and my sons are Star Warriors. We know Sci-Fiand this is a good shoot 'em up.

Thor
I was surprised by how good Thor actually is! As this is (to myknowledge) the 1st time Thor has made an appearance on the big screen Iknew little about him. He starts the film as an arrogant narrow mindedmeat head basically with more muscle then sense. He thinks he isunstoppable and can do what ever he wants without consequence. But asthe film progresses he matures and becomes the man he needs to be inorder to take his fathers place. So we have a coming of age film in away as well as a super hero movie where he must defend against the bigbad guy. So in many ways this is marvels most mature film to date. Addin some stunning scenery and fantastic acting and you have a greatfilm! One thing letting it down is the fact that the bad guys are notreally that threatening. All in all a must see!

VISUALLY FASCINATING!!!!!
This review is from: Thor (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) BLU RAY REVIEW THOR! AMAZING, Colorful! THUNDEROUS DTS SOUND, Action never slows! WOW! Hemsworth and entire cast is excellent! Great director, great music, great story. All the bad reviews that give less than 5 stars, can go back to there animated superheroe pokemon cartoons.Well done job with space warp travel, frost giants and how Thor becomes trapped here on earth trying to figure out how to get his hammer back. The blu ray displays a crisp and clear BD transfer also comes with DVD version disc and digital copy, so you get triple versions, only gripe is that the movie ended so soon. A must own for all action heroe fans or not, who appreciate a great imagination of norse mythology made into a first class action hero movie.I can actually sit with my family and have bowl of popcorn with this great action packed movie and not be blushing embarrassed out of place if you know what I mean.Highly recommended! 5 stars all the way to ASGAARD!

Two worlds. One hero
The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantasticrealm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soonbecomes one of their finest defenders.Expect. Receive. Thor isn't really my type of superhero movie. When Ihear the word superhero, Spiderman or Batman pops into my head. And tobe completely honest, I haven't even really heard of Thor beforehand. But expecting not the slightest of much, I got pure entertainment andnot much more. Thor combines two worlds into one, with him transferringfrom his home-world Asgard and traveling to Earth. Expect cheesiness, because your going to get a lot of it. Expect cliché, because yourgoing to get a lot of it. Despite these flaws, the film didn't turn outto be that bad as I had thought. The action scenes were a real treat,as was the stunning special effects. Who would've thought of a worldwith rainbow bridges? The cinematography is also a treat as well withsweet angles. So don't expect TOO much, because Thor isn't thatspecial. Be sure to look after the credits for a tie-in to theAvengers. 6/10.

Marvels Best Yet!!!
Thor is easily Marvel's Best Comic Superhero Movie yet. The 3D features are only so-so. You can get the Blu-ray of this movie and be satisfied. I definitely recommend Hi-Def.The reason Thor is Marvel's best is the challenge of telling a compelling story about Gods bouncing from dimension or realm to realm and weaving in a reason to care for a self centered thug warrior (Thor) while also seeing his drastic change to a protector. It isn't the visual effects that propels Thor as a movie, but the story behind the movie.I could and have watched this movie many times (in 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy). It is worth the investment.

Never Gets Old
I have seen this movie multiple time. It never gets old. It haseverything that a Marvel movie should have. It has humor, action, incredible acting and amazing CGI.Thor is casted out of Asgard after disobeying his fathers order. He isnow stuck on earth with humans. Loki then tries everything he can tostop Thor from coming back to Asgard. Chris Hemsworth plays Thor, awarrior eager to be the king of Asgard. Chris is the perfect person toplay Thor and he plays him well. Loki is played by Tom Hiddleston, heis the jealous younger brother of Thor and wants to be king instead.Odin (Thor's father) is played by the amazing Anthony Hopkins. NataliePortman plays Thor's love interest. I felt Thor having a love interestwasn't need, but it didn't effect my viewing experience of the film atall. This film has an all-star cast and an interesting story. The best part of the movie were definitely Sif and the Warriors 3. Theyprovided some of the humor in the film. There characters wereintriguing, but you don't see much of them. S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulsonreturns in Thor. He has the best line in the entire movie, but you'llhave to wait until the end to hear it.The CGI was amazing. It was way better than the CGI used in Battle: LosAngeles. Thor's powers really comes to live on the screen. The CGI isbelievable and far from looking fake. Asgard looked so beautiful, thanks to the amazing CG Asgard looked like a place meant for Gods. CGIhas advanced a lot ever since the original Tron. The advances CGI hashad over the years really shows itself in Thor. This is a movie that everyone must see. You will not be disappointed.*note* stay after the credits.

By Odins Command, See this One!
The folks at Marvel Studios have good business sense, and have put alot of effort into building a Marvel movie universe populated bypopular Marvel Comics characters. Iron Man 2 closed with a secretteaser ending, showing the discovery of Thor's hammer Mjolnr, andintroducing an important piece of the Marvel movie universe puzzle.Thor is a staggering achievement, filled with imaginative energy andcrackling with excitement, but the greatest weapon this warrior wieldsis its strong plot. Director Branagh brings his Shakespearian senses tothe fore, stirring elements such as the Cain-and-Abel tussle betweenThor and Loki, the star-crossed romance between Thor and Jane and alsothe friction between Thor and his disapproving father Odin into thecinematic pot.Branagh proves that he is no pushover when it comes to action sequencesand wide panoramic vistas either. He has a keen eye for what looks goodto excitement-hungry moviegoers, and this movie is packed withfantastic and beautiful visuals. From the sparkling spires of Asgard tothe desolate wasteland of Jotunheim, this is a ten-course feast for theeyes  especially when given the 3D treatment.Chris Hemsworth proves himself as a charming and charismatic leadingman. Thor is portrayed here as a skilled but reckless and headstrongwarrior prince, and Hemsworth takes the audience along as Thor learnshumility and finds love on Earth, even as he experiences some hilariousmoments of culture shock. He also does well in the fight sequences, having trained and gained 20 pounds of pure muscle for the role. The supporting cast hits all the right notes as well, Anthony Hopkinsimbuing Odin with thundering authority, Tom Hiddleston alwayspossessing a malicious glint in his eye as Loki and Natalie Portman ather most normal and girlish as astrophysicist Jane Foster. StellanSkarsgard grounds the film as Foster's level-headed mentor, and KatDennings is well-cast and very funny as the comic relief sidekick, usually a male role.An all-round movie-going experience, Thor is the explosive andsubstantial summer movie season opener everyone has been hoping for,and is unmissable on this and any other of the eight known realms. Oh,and don't forget to stay past the credits for a mind-blowingrevelation.

A surprising superhero movie, but could have been better
I had often wondered how they would introduce Thor at the movies, because unlike most of the other Marvel superheroes thus far, Thor inhis comic origins has a basis in mythology rather than science fiction(or science fantasy, if you take my meaning) and originates off- world.Like Superman, he comes from a fantastic planet whose science andphysics are so beyond ours that from our viewpoint it is magic. (Thisdoes not explain why they all look human, but let's not go there.)What I imagined from the movie was that they would feature Asgard atthe beginning, for an origin sequence, and the rest would take place onEarth. Turns out, Kenneth Branagh and the writers plotted the movie onAsgard for at least 50% of the screen time. This, I think, saved themovie. The otherworldly sequences were the most interesting andimportant elements of the story, and looked fantastic. This not a movieabout Thor on Earth, it's a movie about Thor's conflicts with hisfather Odin and his sneaky step-brother Loki, wherein his banishment toEarth was just a part of the story arc. Part of the problem with the Earth-side story is that it's boring. It'sset in a very small New Mexico town in the desert. Thor befriends anambitious astronomical researcher Jane Foster, played by NataliePortman, whose character seems to have no real depth because we neverget to know her personally. In fact somehow he falls in love with her,but I'm not sure how or why this happened. At any rate, the majorbattle scene on Earth takes place between Thor (with his entourage, whocomes to fetch him) and a powerful golem from Asgard that seemsremotely controlled by Loki (somehow). The golem (the Destroyer fromthe comics) was great, but he trashes nothing more than a tiny deserttown. Or more specifically, main street in the tiny town (although Idon't think there are many other streets to trash). Thor defeats him,end of the Destroyer. That's it? To me this missed a huge opportunityfor a more epic battle. It should have taken place in a hugemetropolis. Perhaps a Northern European city (because why does italways happen in America?) closer to where apparently the wormholesinteracted with the Norse (resulting in the mythology). In fact if Thorcrashed in New Mexico, fine, but I would have had his hammer land inScandinavia or thereabouts, which would have made for a much nicerbackdrop, and thus drawing our characters and the conflict to thatregion. I would have had the Destroyer toppling skyscrapers andsmashing castles before Thor could stop him, leaving a path ofdestruction several hundred miles long through Europe. Not little oldWestern stores and a café. And the Destroyer should have made a muchbigger mess of his friends. So had the movie spent all its time in a little New Mexico town and itssurrounding desert and not returned to Asgard or Jotunheim (the worldof the Frost Giants, enemies of the Asgardians) for action, the moviewould have fallen flat on its face. I suppose there could have been a budgetary reason why they didn't "gourban" on the Earth- side, because special effects of this renderingscale are not cheap, and they did front-load quite a bit on Asgard.Chris Hemsworth was okay as Thor, but the character seemed a little toowinky and toothy at times. I would have had him cocky and snobby, butnot so chipper. His friends seemed a little too much like a bunch of"hang-out dudes" (plus childhood gal-pal) than a band of adventurers. Iwould have made them a little more serious. Chris Hemsworth inparticular does look like Thor -- well chiseled and sufficientlyScandinavian looking -- but his acting doesn't have a lot of believablerange. He'll need to work on that. All in all it was a good, but not great, movie. It will not come closeto the success of Iron Man or Iron Man 2. But it wasn't a flawed messlike the first Hulk movie was.BTW: the 3d is worth it for the space sequences and Asgard. And as withall the Avengers-era movies, need I mention, wait for the Easter Egg atthe tail of the end credits.

Ive seen better
The beginning of the movie was great. But when he got to earth it got stupid. Like how did he fall in love with the girl and there was no leading them to it. They just did. The rest of the story was fine. I guess i WOULD REALLY GIVE IT A 3 1/2. But I couldnt watch this over and over again

More than just a superhero flick
2011's "Thor" is based on the long-running Marvel comic book. The comic was unique in that the stories regularly involved three realms -- the mythical Asgard and neighboring areas, which was where Thor and his fellow Asgardians called home, uncharted expanses across the universe, and Earth. I rarely if ever appreciated the Asgardian segments, but I often enjoyed the many creative cosmic explorations and the Earth-centered stories. The film is amazing in that it successfully recreates Asgard and its main characters for the screen, not to mention that it actually makes them interesting (I never found Odin, Sif or the Warrior's Three interesting). THE PLOT: Odin the "Allfather" is about to anoint Thor as the next king of Asgard, but his son displays folly, arrogance, disrespect and rebellion, forcing Odin to discipline him. Thor is stripped of his godhood and his incredible hammer, Mjolnir, and banished to the earth with no more power than any mortal his size. Thor encounters Jane Porter & her colleagues, as well as the US Government, in his quest for Mjolnir and redemption. Meanwhile his jealous brother Loki enacts schemes in Asgard, forcing the Warrior's Three and Sif to leave and find the exiled Thor. Loki sends The Destroyer to eliminate his brother, which also threatens the thunder god's new group of mortal friends. You couldn't ask for a better cast: Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and three total babes as Jane Porter, Jane's friend Darcy and Lady Sif -- Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and Jaimie Alexander respectively. Some complain about the Asian and African actors in the roles of Hogun and Heimdall, but Hogun always seemed to be modeled after Mongol-types anyway. And who says there aren't other races on Asgard anyway? The Norse encountered some Asgardians many centuries ago spurring their mythology, which naturally didn't include (then) far-off races, but who says the real Asgardians weren't racially diverse? Some criticize the film as campy because it deals with Norse mythology and the fact that the whole realm of Asgard can seem outlandish and cartooney. Yet the movie isn't about their mythology but about the actual Asgardians, who are very real in this story. "Thor" works so well because it's more than just a bunch mindless superhero mumbo jumbo and exciting action/CGI. The deep themes include the pitfalls of arrogance, juvenile rebellion, jealousy, rivalry and deceit, as well as the universal nobility of humility, repentance, courage and sacrificial love. On top of all this, we get a complex and interesting villain for a change. Sure it has a comic booky vibe, but that's what "Thor" is based on. To dismiss it as "another campy Marvel film" is grossly inaccurate. The film runs 115 minutes and the Earth episodes were shot in New Mexico. The DVD features 4 deleted scenes, a "Road to the Avengers" featurette, a director's commentary and a few trailers. FINAL WORD: I don't think you could ask for a better film adaption of the Thor comic and the thunder god's adventures in Asgard, Earth and elsewhere.GRADE: A

a great film that sets the bar for the summer season very high
i went in to this film very excited not just about what it setting up(the avengers) but because it is the start of the summer action seasonthat has two other big comic book based movies (captain America andgreen lantern) and i am very happy to say that it did not disappoint,it felt very close to iron man in tone and pacing but lacked iron manshumour but that is a good thing because if it was trying to make youlaugh at every line then you wouldn't believe the beautiful scenery inAsgard could mix in with the plain desert town that the rest of thefilm is set in, a special mention has to go to Kenneth Branagh and thewriters for making the female characters so realistic and strong peoplenot just the normal stereotypical female roles. PS stay after thecredits it is worth it just me.

A very pleasant surprise
The idea of a "classic" director like Kenneth Branagh making asuperhero film might initially sound strange, but in the case of Thorthat ended up being very appropriate, because the comic always usedShakespearean drama and archaic language to tell the story of the Godof Thunder, the political/family conflicts in the Asgard kingdom andits interaction with the universe of Marvel Comics. And Branagh'scompetent direction, the excellent performances and the solidscreenplay make Thor to be a very entertaining movie.I honestly had always preferred the character of Thor in small doses oras part of an ensemble, like he was on the beginnings of the comic TheAvengers and in its modern reinterpretation The Ultimates. So, I didnot have big expectations on a movie exclusively focused in thatcharacter; however, Chris Hemsworth brings a brilliant performance inthat role, because he could perfectly combine the pompous and operatic"classic" Thor with the dynamic and unstable modern Thor. I do not knowhow the purist fans of the Kirby/Lee era will take that mash-up, but Ithink it was a very good decision, specially because Thor does not onlywork as an origin of that superhero, but also as an efficient preambleof the highly anticipated film The Avengers, which will be anunification point of Marvel's film universe. For example, we also have the character of Agent Coulson conductingscientific investigations from S.H.I.E.L.D. with his accustomedastuteness and efficiency; we also have a cameo of one of my favoriteAvengers (even though without his traditional uniform); and apost-credits scene where a few concepts we are surely going to see inthat future movie are established. But well...it would not be fair toonly consider Thor as an extra-large trailer of The Avengers. As Ipreviously said, it is a very entertaining movie with various positiveelements, like Branagh's efficient direction, which drives the movie ata perfect rhythm. As for the cast, besides of the previously mentionedHemsworth, I think that the rest of the actors is also worthy ofapplause, starting by Natalie Portman, who can perfectly express hercharacter's emotions. I also liked the work from Stellan Skarsgård; hisparticipation is relatively short and it would seem irrelevant if itwas not for the dramatic weight this actor brings to the character withhis mere presence. And Kat Dennings is quite funny and credible as thecomic relief. As for the screenplay, it is very well written; the only thing I wouldsay against it is that it makes a few "traps" which feel a bit forced. As for the action scenes, I found them to be well filmed, with theexception of a few excessive close-ups which made them occasionallyconfusing; I think that is the only thing I can say against Branagh'sdirection. In conclusion, I took a very pleasant surprise with Thor, and I canrecommend it as a very good re-invention of a difficult to handlesuperhero. It might not be a great film, but it definitely made me havea good time.

Not bad but certainly no movie of the year..
I have just finished watching this and it wasn't what I expected, thefirst 'battle' in this movie was pleasing and I hoped that the rest ofthe movie would continue with the trend - but this wasn't to be.The movie felt bland, the characters didn't have much (if any) depth tothem and it just didn't have anything to bring it back up to be abetter movie. There were a few action scenes through, but the best bitswere already gone by the first 20 minutes, which meant we were leftwaiting for something that never actually came.It felt like it took too long to establish any antagonists, and wellreally in the end, it felt as though Thor had nothing to fear, makingthe movie drag slowly through the 'romantic' bits, the movie feltunfinished, though almost 2 hours long it just felt as if there neededto be stronger measures to give the characters any sort of feeling. The movie had a few good points however, the action scenes were notawful by any means and could be watched rationally, the effects weren'tbad, and the story was easy to follow (though it wasn't very gripping).Overall, I felt that Thor was left as an unfinished movie, it took toolong to brew any enemies into the mix of things (I really didn't seeany real 'big bad guys' through any of it) and in the end, this made alot of the movie quite tedious to watch. It wasn't too bad, but belowaverage. I certainly wouldn't call it forward for any awards for movieof the year however.

Utter, utter tripe
Sorry, to all that have given this "movie" more than 1 out of 10. Thishas to be one of the most sorry excuses for a movie I've ever seen.Actually less interesting and more poorly written than Pokemon themovie and even that was a new low for me... It cost me £10.00 to seethis (I had my own 3d glasses)!!! I'm considering asking for a refund. What was the point of Natalie Portman or the other mortals presence andthe 5 minutes we spent in their company? This movie is nothing but a 2 and bit hour long trailer for theundoubted THOR 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 which will have all the drama andnormally good content that Marvel based movies have (I can only hope).More time is spent (nearly half) developing characters and giving usbackground information on how we've got to where we've got...ratherthan telling the story that we paid to see....There's no depth of character, (Anthony Hopkins was the best actor init and he spent most of his time in a coma, I'm guessing after he readthe script !), there's no plot other than arrogant son, exiled toearth. He spends 5 minutes (yes 5 !) not understanding anything that'sgoing on or how society works (despite him and his people being deifiedfor at least 2,000 years) and then gets sucked back to his own "realm",there's little in the way of good dialogue, the special effects are DrWho'esq and the 3D is forgettable. There's no menace from any of the baddies, his "bad" half / non brotherseems so nice that you think "ah it's all an act and something terribleis going to happen"... but no, he is quite a nice guy only reallydabbles with naughtiness.....This film was supposed to be in 3D yet I completely forgot that it wasafter the first 5 minutes and only at the end when I realised that Iwas wearing the stupid glasses did I remember!!In a time where we have transformers, X-Men and the like, the specialeffects were weak and pretty poor. There's no humour no camping it upto rescue it either. My worry is that if this is the best movie of the undoubted quadruologythat we're about to be subjected to, then God help us. I warn you we may have another Iron Man 2 (a movie I still haven't beenable to stay awake all the way through yet!!) or Spiderman (anythingother than 1) on our hands and can I bring myself to part with another£10 on the strength of that?... almost certainly not. This could and should have been great, it wasn't and I'm left feelingcheated ! Cre8.
