Surprise! Im not sleepy at all
I'm watching any kind of film... just to know whether I like it or not.The Twilight Saga is not an exception. The first movie makes me sleepywith all the poorly acting, the dialogue and the story but I thoughtb/c its a cheap project and supposed to be indie... so never mind. Thesecond movie--expecting to be good b/c of Chris Weitz and all the moneyin the world--only makes me suffering in theater. Constantly checkingmy watch and wondering when it'll be over, yawning, yawning and feelextremely bored. So, when Eclipse comes to the theater at the same timewith my occasionally insomnia problem... thinking this could be theperfect sleeping pill, I'm going to theater and I was surprised! Ididn't feel sleepy at all. I actually enjoyed it a little (but the lackin acting still bother me, though--do they really think: "B/c of thePHENOMENON this film will always be top 5 in the box office, so why soserious if wooden acting or simply JUST said the line without too mucheffort will do. The Twihard never complain.") and realize that watchingthis didn't help my insomnia at all b/c throughout the movie I alwayssmiling, grinning or laughing. Sometimes sighing. Maybe when the actorsput some soul in their acts, this could be one of my fave romanticcomedy... just ignore the vampire-werewolf things.

The Best in All Respects, for Whatever Thats Worth
This is perhaps the only Twilight movie for which I had any expectationof quality, as it was the only novel that I enjoyed from the series. Iam wondering what Bill will do for Breaking Dawn but having any hopefor that book is along the lines of watching The Princess and the Frogas a biography. Anyway, this movie was disappointing, as I expected. Itfailed to capture much of the magic that made the book the onlytolerable entry in the series. Much of the problem goes to thescreenwriter; Melissa is 3/3 (shouldn't someone call her out?) inruining these films. Also, the leads are impossibly boring, and afterwatching Adventureland, I have decided that brooding is the onlyemotion that Kristen Stewart is capable of conveying on screen, whichis becoming less and less enduring as time goes on. The male leads arejust as atrocious, and it's sad when you find yourself searching forsupporting cast members (Fanning, Howard, etc.) to fulfill the need tosee acting. All this being said, this was the best of the three. Thepacing is much better and that goes far towards keeping thingsinteresting. It never quite becomes involving, but it's not nearly asdraining as Twilight and New Moon. What else can I say? Read the bookor don't. Watch the movie or don't. Your life won't be depleted orenriched either way it goes. It's two hours of your life; is it worththe numbingly casual entertainment this film has to offer? Blah

Boring
Even if the movie had some comedy in it,the overall is still boring. Weak story even if it came from the book. Weak special effects, the visuals; the characters has low acting in them, and most of all, almost all of the Twilight movies were the same. The Cullens should have kept their promise in becoming vampires, but they hate doing it because its bad, but that's what ALL vampires normally do. And Bella, will never leave Edward but keeps in contact with Eward's rival Jacob, and that's a stupid kind of Romance.

Much Ado about Nothing
So much ado in the world mass media about "Eclipse"! And - much adoabout nothing. "Summit Entertainment", please call back either Catherine Hardwicke orat least Chris Weitz! The franchise is getting from bad to worse. You're in danger of losing millions of viewers for "Breaking Dawn" ifthe trend begun by David Slade continues! If you don't care aboutquality movies, care at least about your profits. "Eclipse" is a cheaphack-work whose only aim is to make some easy money. It won't worktwice.David Slade has done the impossible - he managed to butcher the"Eclipse" novel altogether! Instead of the most dynamic book of thesaga, which  though possessing no literary qualities of big literature- is at least a page-turner, he produced an incredibly cheesy hash-dishof disconnected episodes, none of which is charged and coherent enoughfor the viewer to evaluate its meaning for the plot and characterdevelopment. The film has no magic of Catherine Hardwicke's "Twilight"which concentrated on the phenomenon of first love with all shades ofemotion, its tenderness and blunders. The colour gamut of "Twilight",the dialogues, the motivation of the characters, the pacing varyingfrom slow to lightning speed  everything was there to contribute tothe magic. Chris Weitz, on the other hand, concentrated on thecharacter of Jacob and on the film gathering momentum in the very end, when Bella goes to Italy. This break from the slow pacing of the timetedious for Bella to break-neck speed of the Italian part does the filmcredit. Though in comparison with "Twilight", Chris Weitz almostbotches up Edward's character to save it at the last moment in theepisode with the Volturi, both films have an atmosphere of their own.Not so the "Eclipse".Slade and Rosenberg seem to have been intensely hating the book whilefilming it. How otherwise could they have created this  this product(euphemism)? No coherent and consistent dialogue, no dialoguemeaningful enough to give the actors at least SOME room for displayingtheir acting skills, no character motivation, no chemistry between thecharacters. The flashbacks with Rosalie and Jasper held some promise, but no, David Slade was very consistent in destroying their appeal, too. Both the stories lack some essential parts absolutely necessaryfor understanding the characters. On the whole, all the actors have tomumble through some nonsense lines which have to pass for dialogue. ALLof them seem to be there just because the franchise must plod on.Edward's repeated bleating about Bella marrying him obviously gets evenon his own nerves. Action? Don't make my cat laugh. If this tiny partof vampires' training and a tiny fragment of real fighting lacking anygusto can be called action, then I'll eat my hat. I bet people expectedmuch more than that bit of morning exercise, waving hands and raisinglegs. The only credits in this field go to Jasper and Emmett.Acting? Godawful. It seems the main characters are suffering fromvarious diseases and need medication real quick.Edward is hanging about with the facial expression of one havingchronic dyspepsia. It seems that each and every Bella's appearance onthe set is nauseating for him and he's manly fighting this emotion toconceal it. Motilium and sickness medications, quick! It's not aprogress in acting, but a step back. Edward was best in "Twilight", in"New Moon" it was slow deterioration, now it's a catastrophe. Edwardmust be changing, but - so? Edward seems to be turning into a willingslave of Bella and effacing himself completely. It's obvious that, onthe one hand, the actor was left with no choices of his own and withnot much of a role to play, on the other hand, he's tired of thefranchise whatever he may be saying in public (and anyone would betired of this film 'very DIFFERENT from the previous two'). By the way,we should do Mr. Pattinson credit, for he's honest  he said that hefeared nobody would come to see the film. He has definitely seen thepre-release copy. Next time I'll be more attentive to the messages hesends.Bella. She's lost all the appeal of a young inexperienced girl caringfor everybody, eager not to hurt, to bring together, a heart bleedingfor everyone. Now we see an egoistic scheming wench not caring a figabout anybody, her only aim, as we learn in the end, was to siftthrough her motives and to make the RIGHT choice, and that's becoming avampire, love is secondary here. Is she doing it for her shrink? Nexttime fetch your pocket calculator to draw up the balance, Bella.Bella's attempt to seduce Edward looks nauseating, so pre-planned itis. Where's love, where's sincerity, where's youthful impetuousness?Gone to the dogs. On the whole, judging by Bella's facial expressionit's evident that the girl was dropped head down more than once in herinfancy and now has difficulty comprehending what is being said aroundher. Acetazolamide may have helped, had it been taken earlier. Bella'salso obviously a mouth-breather. Remove your adenoids, Bells. Beforeit's too late and you're too far gone.Jacob. No progress in comparison with "New Moon", too few and too badlines given, too little screen time.Victoria. Rachelle Lefevre was voluptuous, lascivious, dangerous. BryceDallas Howard is emaciated, pitiful, heavily painted and timid. Shecan't touch Rachelle Lefevre. A very bad choice. The wig alone doesn'tmake the character. A bad mistake of "Summit".Was there ANYTHING good? My thumbs up to Jasper, Alice, Emmett,Carlisle, Charlie, Riley (though Riley's part could have been made moredramatic and consistent, but not with the current wonder script, alas).Oh, yes, the landscapes were impressive.

Good enough to see 3 times
I saw this movie 3 times in the theater an i will explain them all.1stwas at the midnight showing i was soo excited an i literally enjoyedwatching it i loved the book and the director did notdisappoint.Kristen Stewart did a way better job then in the last 2movies i saw her and so did Robert Patinson. Taylor Lautner was goodbut he came off to me as trying to hard or something to that affect.Bryce Dallas as the new victoria amazed me with her performance and inmy opinion (no disrespect for Rachel Lavere) i would have perferred herto have been victoria for the other 2. I left the theater amazed anhappy with the movie that i went the next day just to see it this timei wasn't so entertained it was still very good bu i was only reallylooking forward to the action scenes in the end. On my 3rd time to thetheater i was finally convinced that the movie was amazing the plot alittle rushed but the dialouge made up for it the acting so much betteran the intense fighting scenes had me on the edge of my seat all 3times. I love David Slade(director) an i wish he would be directingBreaking Dawn. If you did Like this movie and your blaming the directorplease don't because its not his fault i think if anyone wants to blamesomeone it should be the screen writer she is the one who writes thescripts and takes things out from the book the director is the one whofilms it.

ratings observation
they really need to fix how they combine reviews on all discs of the same name.. reviews of the disc that is combined blue ray/dvd single disc, and others that are single disc dvd, and then the 2 disc special feature pack.. all reviews are the same for all 3 packages.. if you post here is lists in the other 2 packages as well.. so the various one star ratings for the rip off pack are actually also rating the good 2 disc bonus with everything in it.. people see the bonus pack and all the one star ratings and it's confusing..

Movie Awesome--AMAZON NOT!
This review is from: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD) Overall, I really liked it, considering it can in no way really fulfill the book; however, I have 2 major complaints:1) The conversation between Bella and Jacob before he goes to fight is totally gay. They tried to cram in the intensity, yet turned it into something silly by changing how it all went. The movie makes it appear as though she's pursuing him and didn't properly show how he was baiting her by talking about going out in a blaze of glory per say.2) The fight with Edward and Victoria and Riley. They made Edward out to look like some sort of pansy that couldn't hold his own. Not how it happened. They also did this in New Moon when he scuffled with Felix (I do think Felix should've ultimately won, but it should've been more of a challenge than it was). With that said, I loved most everything else!Dear Amazon,I will not pre-order anything from you in the future. Other retailers ship it so that you RECEIVE it on the release date. If others can do it why not you? Very disappointing!

Best out of Twilight Saga
Alright, let me just say that I am a fan of the books. I, however, didnot enjoy the adaptations of the first two books. I went into thismovie with hesitation. My friends had all said that it was good but Ithought it would just be as horrid as the first two films. I was wrong. This film was better filmed than the first two. The special effectsaren't quite as cheesy this time around. The Good: 1) Jackson Rathbone pulls off his portrayal of Jasperamazingly well. He was more of a background character in the first twobut given something to work with, Rathbone has exceeded my expectationsof Jasper and has quickly become my favorite actor of the whole series.2) Peter Facinelli, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, and the rest of theCullen gang (except for Robert Pattinson) return with some amazingperformances this time around.3) I enjoyed the background information on Rosalie and Jasper even iftheir scenes were cut a bit short. I also enjoyed the fight scene thistime around. 4)Bryce Dallas Howard takes over Rachelle Lefevre's spot as Victoriaand gives a spectacular performance. The Bad: 1) The Volturi scenes were a little stiff. Not as great as Ihad anticipated.2) Xavier Samuel wasn't that great of a Riley. I really didn't care forhis performance.3) The Wolf Pack didn't do an excellent job but did the best with whatthey were given. The Ugly: 1) Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have not doneanything to change my opinions about them. Nothing. They give verywooden performances and still don't bring any depth to the charactersat all.If you're a fan of the books, you'll enjoy Eclipse, perhaps. I enjoyedit despite my hesitations.

Great Twilight movie! Back off haters
Okay first I would like to say to the people who hate on Twilight allthe time need to move on. Seriously! It's not something that is foreveryone. And those of us who are the crazed fans are happy that way soleave it alone. All you do is make people think you secretly loveTwilight and are too bitter about it to admit it! :-) Second: Loved it!Loved it! Loved it! The tent scene lacked absolutely nothing! I know alot of people were worried due to the whole PG thing but it was exactlyas it should've been. I think the "that should've been our first kissmoment" was epic too! MmMMM! Bryce Dallas Howard was incredible! Lookslike Rachelle failed on that one for taking a contract for somelifetime movie! She played the part the way it was meant to be played.Good job out of her at coming in at the eleventh hour and reallycapturing Victoria.Seth Clearwater was sooo cute! I wanted to kiss his cute lil face!!Loved the humor in the movie! It added a lot of fun to it thatsometimes the original didn't really have.Overall it was a great movie for the true twilight fans! Two thumbs wayway up! Oh and Jasper's scenes...yum!!! More of him in Breaking Dawnplease!

Very disturbing movie
This is a very interesting movie. Especially because of it's surprisingpopularity. I for one love the special effects. Coolest looking wolvesever in a movie, no doubt. However the movie itself is very disturbing. It is essentially about a sick girl and her dilemma in regards to herchoice between necrophilia and bestiality. She enjoys both, she justcan't make up her mind as to what to stick to. If you have as sick amind as this girl, you might as well do both, because I honestly don'tknow what is worse, screwing dead people or animals. If your children watches this, I feel sorry for you. If your motherwatches this, I feel even more sorry for you. If your dad watches this, you might as well kill yourself.

Eclipse It just keeps getting better
I am so glad they took the time to tell the stories of all the characters in the Cullen family. If you read the book you knew why they were where they were. If you didn't and you went into the theatre today or last night, you learned some interesting facts about Edwards sister and brother.I the the movie was well worth the anticipation! Twilight was kinda low~grade filming, New Moon redeemed the series and Eclipse and Breaking Dawn will definitely take it over the top!!THAT GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE STEPHANIE MEYER who have the gift of a good computer and pen!!

great deal
Everyone knows how good eclipse is, so I am only writing the review for the extras that come on the second dvd. I liked the deleted and extended scenes. Too bad that werent in the actual movie. But the 6 part making of documentary is really great. If you like to know how things are made, and also see some funny extras like Taylor Lautner catching grapes in his mouth from 30 feet away then this is the dvd to get : )

Theres a reason I skipped the others...
Okay, so I watched this because my best friend said that, because she'dalready seen the previous films, she wanted to watch this one too. Andeven she commented afterwards that it went on for FAR too long. I'dseen a bit of Twilight, but avoided New Moon at all costs (MichaelSheen alone was not enough temptation to watch it), but I have read allof the books - which slowly got worse as they went along, and it seemsth films are no exception.Kristen Stewart. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Such aterrible actress. Does she even have a facial expression that doesn'tmake her look like a morbid zombie? Her acting is terrible, and she'smanaged to make such a downright unbelievable character. Same forRobert Pattinson: his acting, whilst not terrible, is not that goodeither. And for Edward to be described as "perfect" and beautiful, hecertainly doesn't reach anyone's (unless you're under the age of 13)expectations. The man is downright unattractive. The whole love triangle had no chemistry. Would anyone actually actlike this in real life? Because I'm sure that if Bella pranced off tokiss Jacob when her BOYFRIEND was but a mere 10 feet away, he'd go kicksome major arse...but no. No fighting, no arguments, and no realmention of the subject. Which is really just downright unbelievable. The dialogue between the three was also tense, and I found I cringedmore than once. The make-up was also pretty bad. My friend actually turned to meseveral times to mention how Kristen Stewart's eyebrows were not equal- that made me laugh, I'll admit. But from what I've seen of the hairstyles of the previous films, they seem to look better. But thegod-awful "golden" eyes looked tacky, and made the whole film lookincredibly low-budget.The fight scene was...okay, I guess. Anti-climactic, yes, as thenewborns were supposed to be incredibly powerful...and yet they weretorn apart (literally) by the Cullens as if they were nothing.Disappointing, to say the least. To be honest, if I was going to say, if anyone, who stole the show, itwould be Jackson Rathbone as Jasper. He showed a domineering andcommanding side to the character that was previously lacking in thefirst film, and I think it was simply great to see someone taking leadand acting changing facial expressions! What I really want to know is what the hell Dakota Fanning and CameronBright are doing in this film (actually, the only reason I'm giving it1 star). I mean seriously, they're both incredibly talented actors, andat such a young age, and they've both been in awesome, huge movies. Imean come on, they barely had any screen time! So guys, please, doyourselves a favour and just drop out and don't reprise the role.

Who hid the lighting lamp?
I'm sure Stephenie Meyer had pure motives to do Twilight books: shewanted to create romantic, clean Love never dies story, with thrill ofdanger, but without jumping to the sewers. Unfortunately, these filmsare quite awful: there is nothing romantic, lush and otherwordly inthem, so unlike in the mistitled but brilliant Bram Stoker's Dracula.Characters, plot and settings are boring - I'm sure Bella is sweetperson, but I just can't care about her love life - and there is novisual style. Actually, one thing I really hate in these modern filmsis ugly photography. Who hid the lighting lamp? Atmospheric lighting isnot same thing than BAD lighting and this ugly, muddy colour scheme. However, I hope that those who still Ãdiotically whine about changedvampire rules, would stop. Please, everyone and their cousin changesthem, not even vampire folklore agrees with all rules because theydiffer from country to country, and for example, Dracula walked happilyin sunlight.

The choice is obvious...this is the one
Being a Twilight fan, I couldn't wait to catch Eclipse, the thirdinstallment of the Stephenie Meyer franchise. I sat in the theater, waiting for it to begin, wondering what favorite lines of mine from thebook would make it into the movie. I also couldn't wait to see RobertPattinson's gorgeous face again. The movie did not disappoint. Just like New Moon, it was pretty closeto the book. In this one, Seattle is plagued by unexplained deaths;these are the result of Victoria. She is building an army to take onthe Cullens and get to Bella. Meanwhile, Bella is wrapping up things inher human life to prepare for her departure into the world of theundead. She visits Jacob a few times and he tells her he's in love withher. He says he knows she loves him too, but won't admit it. Later,Bella agrees to marry Edward in exchange for him having sex with herafter the wedding. After battling Victoria's army and her own innerdemons, Bella comes to realize exactly where her heart does lie.As usual, the three leads are dead-on in their performances.Truthfully, I hated Bella in Eclipse; I couldn't believe she wouldtreat Edward the way she did. Kristen Stewart made Bella likable; eventhough I still hated Bella, I could understand her point. Except, ofcourse, when she asked Jacob to kiss her. Out of everything that wascut, that made it in. I knew it was important, but it didn't make meany happier. And despite the fact that I'm Team Edward, I do likeTaylor Lautner as Jacob. He is probably the stand-out in this movie, getting to fight vampires, kiss the woman he loves, and accept thetruth. His final scene is heart-breaking and I almost found myselfwanting to console him. Almost.Robert Pattinson takes Edward to new levels. You can see the pain he'sfeeling when Jacob keeps Bella warm in the tent and makes his jealousyevident in several scenes. Some say Pattinson's performance ishorrible, that he shows no emotion. He's playing Edward as Meyer hasadvised him to; Edward is supposed to be rather reserved and isolated. This is what makes his emotional scenes so powerful. He also ismesmerizing when fighting Victoria. A truly fine performance.Another stand-out in this film is Jackson Rathbone. His character ofJasper finally gets his chance to shine when we learn how Jasper cameto be. And although several of the best lines from the book areomitted, Rathbone's intensity is not. You feel his pain as he explains"I didn't know of another way" when he joined Maria and hisnever-ending love for Alice. Though I was irritated that one of thebest lines in the entire saga was not present in the movie ("I felthope"), I was rewarded with a nice Jasper-Alice kiss. And Ashley Greeneherself portrays some great emotion when dealing with the visions ofVictoria coming to Forks. The rest of the supporting cast is just as excellent, especially NikkiReed and Kellan Lutz. Emmett gets a chance to fight and show hishumorous side and Rosalie finally explains her dislike of Bella. Thishelps you understand her more and realize that although she'sself-centered, there is still a human there. Bryce Dallas Howardreplaces Rachelle LeFevre as Victoria. I really wanted to hate her; Iwas convinced that only LeFevre could play Victoria. I was wrong.Howard is almost as perfect as her predecessor and shows off some realtalent when Edward is goading her. My bias for her dropped during thefilm and I became glad that she was in it. And there's a new vampire todrool over in Xavier Samuel as Riley. This brings the list of hot menin this movie to one hundred. I can only imagine what Breaking Dawnwill have.Like before, the cinematography is beautiful. There are several shotsof the area that they live in and several cool action shots. Costumesare modern and desirable, especially the blouse Bella wears in Edward'shome. The soundtrack once again includes music from musicians that Ididn't know exist, such as Sia and Beck and Bat for Lashes to theever-faithful Muse. And, true to form, there is one instrumental on thesoundtrack album, one for those who are Team Jacob.Anyone who is a fan of the Twilight Saga will not want to miss any ofthe movies, but most especially this one. So far, it is the best in thefilm franchise.

Finally some action between naps!
I've been forced to see ALL of them with my girlfriend. I know it'sembarrassing and one more and I can be kicked off the man-team forlife. I think I'm already on the DL list. Get this, this last one,Eclipse, wasn't bad. What I'm trying to say, uh, is, uh, well it wasbearable. I don't mean the wimpy stuff, but there was some action, definitely more than the last one, and it kept me periodically fromfalling into sickening convulsions. Oh, yeah, by the way, I did nodoff twice I kid you not I fell asleep twice in the same movie, duringthe middle of the afternoon and I wasn't tired when I went in. Butworth the price of admission was that my girlfriend admitted during themovie that it was a 'little slower than she had expected'. But the badnews is that on the way out she said that she was sure that the NEXTone would be better (for sure). Oh, noooooooo . I'm going to have tosee another Twilight Movie The things men do for  um  'love', yep, that's it, the things men do for love. Man oh Man, I can't wait for theExpendables to come out Yeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!

They really need to punch up the conversations in this love triangle
First of all, I do not think that "Twilight" is the worst thing to happen to American literature or cinema in the 21st century or whatever. The fact that within 12 hours of opening its rating on the International Movie Data Base was 3-point-something surely does not express the judgment of the fanatics (and they boys they date) who paid $30 million to catch the special midnight showings this (early) morning. I agree you do not need to see something to decide that it is bad, but I think you do need to see it to assign a valid number on a ten point rating scale. I also think it is fairly obvious that if you have not seen the first two movies and/or read the first two books in Stephenie Meyer's series, then you are never going to be able to figure out what is happening in this one, but then the same thing applies for starting with "The Return of the Jedi" or "The Return of the King." Come to think of it, I have to believe that virtually everybody reading these words has already decided whether or not they are going to see "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."When last we left our heroine, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), she and her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) had been given an ultimatum by the Volturi, that because Bella knows so much about vampires she has to become one or die. This fits into Bella's plans because she wants to become a vampire and be with Edward forever. Bella's best friend, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner, who happens to be a werewolf, thinks he loves Bella as much as she loves Edward and does not want her to become a vampire because it is the sacred duty of all werewolves to kill vampires and then he would have to kill Bella. Meanwhile, another vampire, Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard, is out to kill Bella and thereby payback Edward for what happened at the end of the first movie. So basically Bella wants to become a vampire and the two men in her life disagree with her decision, albeit for different reasons. The key to Bella Swan has two foundations; the first, that she loves Edward Cullen with all her heart and all her mind and all her soul, and the second, that she can love Jacob Black as a friend while loving Edward as a lover, or would be lover. These two truths are something that I suspect most teenage girls can relate to. That being said, I find Team Jacob people fascinating, because they are our contemporary children of the lost cause. I keep thinking it is like reading an American History textbook, being very interested in the Civil War, and deciding to root for the Confederacy. The conflict in this story comes from the inability of Jacob to understand these two rules, which means he becomes more and more of a jerk as the film goes along. Because Edward and Jacob cannot have a fight to the finish, these conflicts play out mostly in conversation, and that is the biggest problem with this movie. The vast majority of it consists of conversations, primarily between Bella, Edward and Jacob. Basically all of the Bella and Edward conversations are a variation on her saying "change me," him refusing and countering with "marry me," her refusing and repeating as necessary. The Bella and Jacob conversations are all variation on her saying "I love you, but not that way," him insisting she does love him and it could be in that way, sprinkled with threats against Edward. Edward and Jacob tell each other that Bella always loved them best and then threaten each other until Bella shows up, yells at both of them and goes off with whichever one is most ticked off at that moment to have one of those aforementioned conversational rounds. The best parts of this movie are the trio of flashbacks that happen during some more of those conversations with Bella. Both Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) and Rosalie (Nikki Reed) tell their chilling but pertinent tales on how they became vampires, thereby moving beyond the one dimensional characters they had been in the previous films, and then there is the campfire story about the first encounter between the Quileute and the Cold Ones told by Billy Black (Gil Birmingham). That last one could would have made for a nice prehistoric prequel, and reminded me of "Ginger Snaps Back - The Beginning," one of my favorite werewolf movies. I also liked what little we got to hear of the commencement address given by Jessica (Anna Kendrik) and basically anything that Alice (Ashley Greene) does in the film, but then across the board the women in this film come off better than the men. The big battle in the film's climax has its moments, because for all the violence is uber-quick and more suggested that scene. The idea of vampires as Cold Ones, in addition to providing the motive for the love triangle in a tent in a snowstorm scene, works to keep the PG-13 rating for this film: basically it is like snapping (or biting) off the limbs (and heads) of marble statues. So there is neither fountains of blood nor clouds of dust, although when Emmett (Kellan Lutz) shatters a newbie's head with his fist, I have no idea why his fist does not explode too. However, I have long held that the laws of vampirism are outside the realm of real world empiricism, so I suspend my disbelief and go along for the ride. So the battel scene has its moments, but it ends with a moment whose outrageousness, if not absurdity, evoked laughter from the audience.Director David Slade showed he could do vampire action in "30 Days of Night" and also proved with "Hard Candy" that he can make a pretty good film where most of the action is mere conversation. But neither Meyer's original story nor the screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg (who has done all three adaptations) give Slade much to deal with beyond the short spurts of action and all the conversations, which might be part of the reason he is not doing the final two-part installment. I find it extremely telling that Bella's conversations with her dad, Charlie (Billy Burke), or with any other characters besides Edward and Jacob, work pretty well. But since most of the movie is those three talking, that becomes a big problem; there was only one moment when Jacob said something that I thought was a decent line. Bella's opening lines might be the best in the movie, but she's quoting a famous Robert Frost poem that provides an obvious metaphor for her love triangle. I have no doubt that young people look at this movie differently than I do, because I well being caught up in a romantic rapture when first watching the balcony scene in Franco Zefferelli's "Romeo & Juliet" in the theatre and then, twenty years later, laughing at the same scene because it shows two horny kids at the end of their first date. There is a reason "Twilight" has the demographic that it does. Final Note: It does not help that the last trailer they showed before the movie started was for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which is a pointed reminder of the relative shallowness of the Twilight universe (although it should be mentioned that the Harry Potter trailer sandwiches its montage between the two confrontations with Voldemort that will come in Part 2, which is not out until next year).
