Storyline

Plot Summary:

Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a mechanic - an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. Its a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed - he wants those responsible dead. His mission grows complicated when Harrys son Steve (Ben Foster) approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishops trade. Bishop has always acted alone but he cant turn his back on Harrys son. A methodical hit man takes an impulsive student deep into his world and a deadly partnership is born. But while in pursuit of their ultimate mark, deceptions threaten to surface and those hired to fix problems become problems themselves.

What, microphone showing up ??

I was watching the movie. Then in one of the scene (lasting few seconds), saw moving microphone overhead. Well, if this movie is serious, it should not have such things showing up in it !I have not finished the DVD yet, but kind of wondering if anyone saw it as well. I have not read through all the reviews of this DVD yet.

As expected

This review is from: The Mechanic [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This Movie is exactly as I expected it to be, decent and worth watching! When it comes to re-makes you have to forget about the original and just enjoy what your currently watching. It will help with this movie for sure, I liked it and found the Actors to do a much better job then I figured they would. Not bad Blu-Ray quality either

Shallow remake delivers entertaining sleeze and violence...but little else

Dropping the brooding existential themes and rich character development of its source material, "The Mechanic" ends up being a preposterous predictable tale of betryal and retribution. Clearly lacking in creative story ideas, the appeal of this film is in its shameless sleeze. The dialogue is needlessly profane, the characters are trashy with more than a few offensive stereotypes, the sex scenes are sweaty and nude, and the constant bloody violence is shockingly impactful. The fight scenes are most memorable; all being incredibly primitive and brutal with lots of painful enviroment interaction that will have you cringing. Even the gun play has more "umph" than usual, the bullets slamming into their targets like sledge hammers. Unforunately, director Simon West is pretty unreliable when people aren't beating the crap out of each other or blowing their brains out. Working with a huge budget, he piles on the contemporary action cliches of loud music, fast editing, close ups, and shaky camera work....which wouldn't be bad if he wasn't so damn sloppy. Some high concept stunts and car trashing end up being forgettable blurs of color and sound. And sadly, Statham really can't be his lovable self in this one. Straddled with a more serious silent character, he can't wisecrack during the action and his few moments of thoughtful downtime involve him sitting around and looking dumb. Vertically challenged, chain smoking, over actor Ben Foster is bratty and annoying...as usual. Some great unintentional comedy as he struts around his house listening to an ipod, dancing and having some sort of fit. In a brief but memorable performance, the ancient wheelchair bound Sutherland is surprisingly touching.-Dan of dangerdiablogik.com (action/horror/cult reviews)

Action packed!

Interesting Remake!

This review is from: The Mechanic (Amazon Instant Video) I like this version of The Mechanic more than I liked the original. This has a better ending. The only thing that I was left wondering about was why the main character had to use a boat to get to his lair, but then he had a sweet old Jag XKE at the same location that could (apparently) be driven away from there? Small detail, I know...

Okay remake!

The Bronson movie has a better story. Moreover, I like how Bronson mademany so called accidents happen. The remake follows close to theoriginal story. Regrettably, the film laps into a few video sequencestunt scenes. Donald Sutherland's and Jason Stratham's charisma andchemistry save The Mechanic. The two actors make a run of the millaction movie stand out. The most memorable scene is when Jason Strathamthrows a bad guy through a bus window. Also, the opening pool scene wasa surprise too. I did not see that twist coming. Very intense! My wifelikes the ending where the apprentice gets what's coming to him. Worthgoing out on a cold day. I give The Mechanic a 6 or 7 out of 10.

what a disapointment

This review is from: The Mechanic [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) I only lasted 40 minutes. It was painful. It moves like molasses. The plot and motivation is poor. Barely any action. The acting is terrible. The cinematography is murky. I like Jason Statham but not in this movie. The only redeeming value is the introductory assassination (that sounds bad, I know). Terrible movie.

Brutally violent and devoid of almost any emotion!

'THE MECHANIC': Four Stars (Out of Five) The latest Jason Statham action film, this one is a remake of a 1972Charles Bronson flick about a veteran hit-man looking to retire (ofcourse). Ben Foster co-stars as an apprentice that Statham's charactertakes on before calling it quits. The film is directed by Simon West(director of such popular B action films as 'CON AIR' and 'LAURA CROFT:TOMB RAIDER') and written by Richard Wenk and Lewis John Carlino (whoalso penned the original). The film is far more impressive, at leaststylistically speaking, than West's previous efforts. I haven't seenthe original but I found this remake to be extremely entertaining andwell done.Statham plays Arthur Bishop, an assassin who's an expert at makingpeople disappear. He's flawless at making his murders look likeaccidents or other acts of random violence. When his friend and oldmentor Harry (Donald Sutherland) is killed he has trouble moving on andis ready to close shop. Then Harry's son Steve (Foster) comes into hislife, obsessed with revenge. Bishop decides to take Steve under hiswing and teach him everything he knows. The two become an odd teamtaking out targets for Bishop's employers. Then when new evidencesurfaces implicating those ultimately responsible for Harry's death thetwo put their new found team to the test. The film is very dark and gloomy, it's not the 'fun' action film someStatham fans are used to. It's brutally violent and devoid of almostany emotion. The lead characters are the epitome of the flawed antihero and they're definitely not 'good guys'. Statham and Foster areboth excellent in their roles and make for a pretty cool action team. The supporting cast is all fitting, including Tony Goldwyn as avillain, and the writing and directing are impressive for this type offilm as well. There's a few dark twists, some of which come prettyearly on, and as I mentioned before this is quite a bit more polishedand satisfactory than West's other work. I wasn't expecting a lot andtherefore was pretty pleasantly surprised. If you like tough actionfilms you're bound to enjoy this.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS7EjRs-tOE

Awesome Movie!

I saw the original movie the"Mechanic" back in the 1970's. This movie starred Charles Bronson as Arthur Bishop thehit man and Jan Michael Vincent as his understudy. The new movie has Jason Strathem in the role of the professional killer Arthur Bishop. Ben Foster plays the role of Steve McKenna Bishop's killer in training. Bishop kills a Columbian drug lord. He then recieves an assignment to kill McKenna(Donald Sutherland. This was his acrual mentor. Bishop carries out a few more assignments when he is approached by McKenna's son Steve to teach him the art of being a contrsct killer. Sreve helps in carrying out some of the assassinations. He does one solo and nearly gets killed himself. Bishop's employers do not like a new player in the field. They finally send out contract hit teams to get Bishop. Bishop turns the tables and kills his former bosses. Steve McKenna blows Bishop's truck up tryingto gain vengance. There is a shocking ending that will dazzle you. See this movie. This one is as good as the original.

The Mechanic

This review is from: The Mechanic (DVD) Jason Statham is exciting to watch on dvd. The mechanic is another fine example of his athletic prowess and acting ability.

Decent and about average

This review is from: The Mechanic (2011) (Amazon Instant Video) Nothing really spectacular here. Just a well made action movie. About what is to be expected from a hollywood big budget summer action movie. The script is tight, the acting is good and the action is great. It is a good popcorn action movie but really not more than that. You won't be talking about it at the water cooler tomorrow. But you won't be complaining about it either. About the remakeThis is a very loose remake of an old Charles Bronson movie by the same name. In that original work The Mechanic Charles Bronson is an aging hit man who takes on a young protege (Jan Michael Vincent) teaches him the ropes of being a hit man. That movie, while dated, is special. This movie loosely follows that same idea with a lot of modern updates. - more action, less dialogue, bigger explosions.

Needed A Little Work

Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a "mechanic"- an assassin with a talent for getting the job done the way it needs to be done, whether making it look like an accident or sending a message. After an extended opening sequence to show off Arthur's skills he goes to meet Harry Foster (Donald Sutherland) his mentor and long-time friend. Harry despairs over his relationship with his estranged son Steve (Ben Foster), who's never lived up to his potential. Arthur is contracted by one of his employers Dean (Tony Goldwyn) to take out Harry over a botched assignment stemming from leaked information- which only a select few had access to- and does so reluctantly. After his father's death Steve spirals into self-destructive behavior, fueling Arthur's guilt and forcing him to accept Steve's ironic request to learn the business. But how long can Arthur keep his involvement in Harry's death a secret from Steve? This is another flick with great promise that comes up a tad short. It gets into the darker aspects of human nature- namely greed, violence and guilt- but in this modern age of emo-heroes/anti-heroes, it never finishes the job. The closest it gets is with Steve's character who in the wake of his father's death seeks closure and a direction in life as well as wanting to understand what it is to kill someone. The sequence where Steve has to eliminate a man who completely outclasses him illustrates the last perfectly. Even after being warned against trying to take him on physically Steve does so anyway, with predictable results, but it fits his character. After seeing Arthur strangle a target Steve chooses to do the same with his, in order to truly feel the moment. There's also Arthur's lack of emotional connection; his only tethers are a bar slut whom he likes but can't seem to completely reach and Harry. The movie's a lot of typical fare; the assassins are portrayed as better than their targets by virtue of their ethics and facets of humanity even when faced with the true nature of their business. The plot hook hinges on an all-too obvious twist that even the high-schoolers sitting behind me were making fun of. There's much more drama than action here, which wasn't bad but the action has no real flow to it; the fights and shootouts always feel like they were dropped in instead of part of the story. Statham is his usual brooding self, Goldwyn delivers some personality and Sutherland as usual has a great presence in his handful of scenes. The best guy here is Ben Foster, who I'm not familiar with but liked a lot. But the ending was too damn cheesy and tricksey.'The Mechanic' will surprise you with some of the directions it goes in, but veers off-course a bit. Simply put- it needed a little tweaking.

An overall lame movie

Mechanic isn't anything to get excited for, even for it's action.you can easily continue living your life without the fear of havingmissed out on a good movie because Mechanic has barely anything tooffer. With a lame plot, lame acting, lame script and a very lame ending, theMechanic is disappointing.Donald Sutherland was easily the best thing about this movie and he wasjust a minor character who got barely any screen time. Stratham isusually good in his action roles, but for some reason he even seemedlame in this particular movie.I recently watched a similar action movie, "Faster" starring the Rock,in my opinion, it had much better plot, acting and action to offer. The transporter franchises were enjoyable to watch, but not theMechanic.I give it 4/10 for some good action scenes, but no where nearsufficient for an "action" movie, and the rest for Sutherland. You can give this a miss unless you're dying of boredom and havenothing else to watch.

The Mechanic reeks of unoriginality.

The Mechanic reeks of unoriginality. And I'm not talking about the factit's a remake of a Charles Bronson flick from 1972. It's the stalescreenplay by Richard Wenk and Lewis John Carlino, and the uninspiredapproach from director Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider) that had mefeeling like I had already seen The Mechanic numerous times before. Theset-pieces are sporadically enjoyable, granted, but everything elsesurrounding those fleetingly good moments are dripping in dullness. Theplot is predictable, the characters are one dimensional and theviolence – although gory – is hardly entertaining. Even the soundtrackis strangely boring.Since his double whammy debut of Lock, Stock and Snatch Jason Stathamhas churned out cookie-cutter action flicks like they're going out offashion. He's starred in everything from the good – Crank, The ItalianJob, Death Race – to the bad – The Expendables, the Transportertrilogy, Cellular – to the ugly – Ghosts of Mars, In the Name of theKing. Perhaps he's worried one day he'll be out of the job; a likelyoutcome if he insists on starring in underwhelming vehicles such asthis. The Stath needs to take a few risks and steer away from the calm, cool and collected bad-ass that he's apparently so comfortable playing. He's given capable support in the way of Ben Foster, a young actor whohasn't wholly delivered on the promise he showed a few years ago.Foster proved with his remarkable performance in 3:10 to Yuma that hecan do the eerie, menacing type, complete with charisma and flair, however here his quiet craziness lacks the same gravitas. Elsewhere, old timer Sutherland is completely redundant and Goldwyn is neitherthreatening nor humorous as the wimpy, boring bad guy. To be honest, the cast aren't given much to work with past clichéd characters andstilted dialogue, but then why in the name of decent film selection didthey sign on for this? There's nothing on offer here that you haven'talready seen throughout Statham's career.2 out of 5 (1 - Rubbish, 2 - Average, 3 - Good, 4 - Great, 5 -Brilliant)

Good, coulda been great

Two of my favorite character actors in one movie, great title, "goodstory"!!! BUT, it was vanilla, bland-it really needed a familiar femalelove interest or something juicier than two women I didn't recognize.Tony Goldwyn as a villain, perfect, just not enough of him...thenagain, good storyline (not great). It's a movie you want to like, pulling for it, and I gave it 7 because of the main characters plusDonald Sutherland. Yes, the action sequences and an ending I didn'texpect, but made up for some of the "falling asleep" middle. Also, thisdoes resemble Transporter 3 (with Ben Foster)...speaking of Mr. Foster,he once again gets wasted with a character you like but don't knowanything really about other than the obvious. Don't get my wrong theflick doesn't suck and is very rent able, I am just like everyone else(tired of vampires, super heroes and horrible remakes of the 80's)

Nice movie great action but spoiled by so many errors

Movie and story was nice and would be great experience, but theexperience was corrupted by so many ERRORS in the movie: at least 6times i've seen crew microphone, cameraman in the shiny mirrored areas.Boat catching in the beginning is clearly not natural. Also when Bishopjumps down the bridge, the boat is not in the place when he dropped thewater (before the jump the boat is more further than after the drop).Clearly dummy ammo meanwhile slow motion of shooting... Obviously morepenetrated bag handle into ceiling in one moment during the fight. Notmentioned about the other mistakes in the movie... I really can'tbelieve that they've released so bad movie cut! Whole movie was for menothing just laughing about the mistakes they left... :-(

Cmon man, you can do better

I really like Jason as an actor but he is cranking out "C" movies like Van Damme did. Don't they have any better blockbuster scripts? This will be in the $5 movie bin in a year. Wait to buy.

Who could shoot a man in a wheelchair? Someone, compassionate and lonely

The movie is called " The Mechanic ' originally written by Lewis J.Carlino. With this addition, there are now three versions. The originalstarred the late Charles Bronson, with Jan Michael Vincent as hisprotégé. The second was with Nicolas cage(Bangkok Dangerous) and thisis the third. This version stars Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop. Of allthe possible actors who could adequately fill the shoes of Bronson,it's Statham. His movie exploits have made him synonymous with actionflicks. With Simon West directing, it not only follows the originalstory but with this version multiplies the drama, exciting action ofthe first, but remains true to the characters. Keenen Wynn is replacedby none other than Donald Sutherland who brings an air ofsophistication and sympathy to his role. Ben Foster plays the youngupstart Steve McKenna, who seems not only innocuous, but hardlysuitable to replace Vincent. Tony Goldwyn is Dean, who was originallyplayed by Frank De Kova. Throughout the entire movie, audience membersare treated to an interesting story and one which is likely to become amemorable follow up to the original Classic. The conclusion here isthat with the right people, this version too will likely become aClassic. Easilly recommended. Superb rendition! ****

Unbelievably BAD movie

I have watched the movie yesterday at the cinema and was really verydisappointed. I had hoped for a fast paced action movie with a cleverstory after reading some good reviews.Unfortunately the movie does not have a good story and is in additionunnecessary brutal. People are killed with hundreds of bullets. Othersare beaten to death and you have to watch it in all details. The firsthalf of the movie does not add much to the story and is rather slowpaced.Over the last 30 minutes i hoped all the time that this bastard"heroes" of the movie would be brought to justice and eliminated. In general i would not recommend the movie to anyone, i think the timewatching this movie can be spent much more fruitfully.
