Just another courtroom drama.

To be honest I am not really a big fan of courtroom dramas, and thismovie, while good, doesn't change my opinion of it. A lot of my friendsask me because I have a law degree do I like movies about lawyers. Myanswer pretty much no. While they can be entertaining, and the argumentand debate in court riveting, in the end it is still a court roomdrama. That said, The Lincoln Lawyer is actually a decent movie withsome very interesting twists as well as ethical dilemmas.Mick Haller is a very slick criminal lawyer who prides himself on hisability to get people off. Right from the beginning it is clear that heknows how to get things done, and how to shake people down for money. At the start he gets pulled over by a bunch of bikies upset that one oftheir own is still in gaol. He knows these guys are legit, and he knowsthat his client is guilty as charged, but it is his job to get themoff, and if he can get them off on a technicality, then so be it.He has his ways of getting his clients, and his clients are those thathave money on them. So when he hears that a rich kid is in gaol forassault, and there is a beach house on offer, he's down their in aflash. However, the catch is, the rich kid is guilty as charged. At first there is doubt, but it is clear that the kid is holding thingsback from his lawyer, such as the knife and the fact that the girl hebeat up was a prostitute, however the story is the same. They set himup so that they could sue the kid after the trial for a nice payout. Itis only when Mick's memories of an earlier case that his suspicionsbecome clear. However, there is a problem, and that is he is this kid'slawyer, and even though the kid ends up admitting that he is guilty ascharged, there is nothing Mick can do due to legal professionalprivilege. He is ethically forbidden from saying anything. There is a little problem with that concept though and that is a lawyeris not allowed to be complicit in any criminal undertakings. He cannotlie on behalf of a client, and in Mick's case the only thing that thelawyer can do is to return the client's money that is left in the trustaccount and resign from the case. However, I suspect that this wasn'tan option for Mick as his client, as well as being wealthy, was alsocapable of doing anything. One theme that seems to run through the movie is how Mick's job is toget guilty people declared innocent and released back onto the street.Mind you most of this comes from the District Attourney, and their jobis to keep the peace, and that includes keeping violent people lockedup. However one of the foundation of the American justice system is foreverybody who has been charged with an offense to have their say in alawfully constituted court of law, and everybody to have access to theservices of an experienced counsel. In one way it can be consideredfairness, but in another it protects the individual against the mightof government. Without these protections we could all be locked up onthe whimsiest charges.Personally, I don't know how this movie will appeal to people who likecourtroom dramas, and I have seen some myself, but while I say it is agood movie and I enjoyed the twists, it is still a courtroom drama.

The Lincoln Lawyer

Enter: Matthew McConaughey. In his best performance (behind A Time toKill). It is obvious he was born to play the lawyer. The next lawyer TVshow, they should cast McConaughey. With the watered down crap he'sdone for the past few years, it's amazing to see him in a good role. The Lincoln Lawyer is a brilliant movie about the flaws in the justicesystem, and one man who tries to correct them.I can imagine how some people would have issues with the pacing. Themovie moves along at a very fast speed. If you can pay attention anddigest all of the information quickly, you'll enjoy it even more.If you enjoy law movies, movies involving crime, movies with greatacting, then watch this.

Excellent courtroom thriller

Matthew McConaughey is a lawyer who likes to win and does not seem to care if his clients are guilty or not as long as they pay him his ridiculously high fees. The beginning of the movie is a little confusing as he is trying to handle few cases at a time.In the rest of the movie he is dealing with one of his clients, accused of killing a prostitude. His client claims to be innocent. I am not a lawyer and so I would not know if the movie was filled with holes as far as the technicalities of the courtroom goes, but other than that this movie is really good. There are number of surprises with a very satisfying ending.Definitely a very entertaining movie.

Very Unpredictable! A Must See!

I watched this movie knowing little about it and I was blown away. Iwas on the edge of my seat the entire time and enjoyed it because itwas not predictable at all. There are good performances, goodsoundtrack, and just a great story. There are a couple corny momentsthat I could pick out between the main character Mick and his driverbut other than that it is flawless. The movie blew me away. The storybetween Mick and Marisa Tomei's character should have had a little moredepth. It will make the readers understand the life of a defenselawyer. The direction was great, and the cinematography was different;there was nothing too cliché about it, which is good. Loved it.

Well-worth watching

Matthew McConaughey has arrived. He carries this movie. His presencemakes this movie happen. He is the spark that lights this movie's fire.He takes a good story and makes it excellent. He projects the intensityand savvy that makes his character interesting and unique. And this isnot hyperbole. Mr. McConaughey's performance is energetic, engaging andentertaining. He manages to project street-smarts and style; he issmart but not slick; he's realistic but not cynical; he is sensitivebut not mushy. Another surprise is Ryan Phillippe's excellentperformance which also adds considerably to the movie's entertainmentvalue as his character spars with Mr. McConaughey's. Although the storyitself is a variation of the detective-who-done-it genre, the effectivemanner in which the story unfolds coupled with the excellent actingmakes this story well-worth watching.

Surprisingly great movie!

This review is from: The Lincoln Lawyer (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I watched this last weekend. It was interesting all the way through, no lags, and even though it's not an action movie you could feel the excitement in it. A few good chuckles. Matthew is becoming quite a "mature" actor and it shows in this movie. The combo set, DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital is a great idea. Getting 3 movies for one price was pretty decent. I have a Blu-Ray but most do not. I can let friends watch the DVD and even offer a free download to the techies.

The Haller essence

Matthew McConaughey proves he's not just a pretty face in The Lincoln Lawyer. It's difficult to translate books to the silver screen, and this is no exception. Based upon the novel by John Connelly, the movie lacks the heart that enlivened the written version. It does do justice, however, to the character of Mickey Haller, a smart, fast-talking defense attorney who knows all the tricks and doesn't hesitate to play them. Kind of a conman with a conscience, if you can picture that. I wondered about the choice of Mcconaughey to play Mick, but I'm happy to report that he captured the Haller essence. His client, a rich boy accused of assaulting a working girl, will pay very well indeed if exonerated, but Mick senses there's more to these accusations than meets the eye. A mature Marisa Tomei portrays Mickey's ex, and while she handles well the material she's given, the nature of their relationship (still loving each other) does not come through. William H. Macy shines as Haller's investigator, as does Laurence Mason, the chauffeur with a keen mind. Michael Pena, a now-incarcerated former client (you can't win 'em all) makes the most of the few key scenes in which he appears, forwarding the momentum of the plot. But this is McConaughey's show, and if his performance here is anything to go by, his career should be taking off from here on out. As should director Brad Furman's.

A Rare Movie - Better than the Book

This review is from: Lincoln Lawyer (Amazon Instant Video) Movies are never better than books, and Michael Connolly is not a minor writer that a movie studio would simply run over on the way to doing an 'adaptation'. The book was decent, but it seemed to suffer from pacing. The pacing of the book magnified the truly strained premises of the book. You had time to think about it. The movie just zips along, drawing a lot from the book, but delivering a truly great product. And I don't like modern movies. There are a lot of characters in this movie, and they straddle a lot of the social classes. You've got the poor Hispanic kid in prison, the white motorcycle gangs (who seem to be criminals). Then you have the rich boy and the rich boy's very weird Mom, plus her lawyer. These characters are painted with more detail in the book, but you get the idea from the movie. The screenplay takes tiny bits of the book, like the freelance videographer, to say something about how the world works, how the social classes collide. The family lawyer says very little, but we know what he is about. Almost everything is gritty, from the bail bondsman to the miffed court officer who will get a double Christmas bonus because our lead character (Mickey) forgot is name. The city of LA figures prominently in this movie. If you want another view of LA, a stream of consciousness on the city, take some parts of Zabriskie Point. It's nice to use locations, and actually give people a sense of something. It's not the upscale or the downscale, it's the day to day impression of things. This is certainly one way to do drama. Nothing is dragged out. There's a tension between Mickey and his ex-wife. How much can ten pages of dialogue add? Of course, you need an interesting story, and that's the core of the book. But the casting is good, and all the mechanics work with the great screenplay.A truly well executed movie that made great use of McConaughey, who may not (yet) have great depth as an actor, but does mirror American society quite well. So he was convincing, to me, in this role.

solid acting and effective twists make for good entertainment

Mick Haller is a hotshot defense attorney who works out of a LincolnTown Car and has a track record for successfully defending thugs andother L.A. lowlifes. It's a dream come true when he's handpicked todefend Louis Roulet, a rich young playboy charged with the brutalsexual assault of a woman. To Haller it's an open-and-shut case andRoulet can't possibly be guilty…at least not at first. Imperfect in itsfinal act, but gripping, well-acted, and—like its lead character—slickand meticulous. McConaughey, as an attorney trying to do his job andfind his conscience at the same time, is in peak form, and has solidsupport from Phillippe, Lucas, and Macy. ***

Its not all right, all right, all right

If you are a fan of the film adaptations of the John Grisham legalthrillers, you might find quite a bit to like about The Lincoln Lawyer,a courtroom drama that treads on familiar ground in an effort to leadto a fairly predictable conclusion. It's not particularly memorable.Matthew McConnaughey stars as Mick Haller, a high-powered lawyer whooperates (mostly) out of his Lincoln Town Car, shepherded around by abesuited driver. At least that's the idea – he's in the car for maybethree or four scenes. Anyway, he's been hired by the family of a richlad, played by Ryan Phillippe, who's accused of battering a woman inher home after she picked him up at a local bar. But it's not longbefore Haller realizes that the case may have something to do with anearlier case of his, one in which his client (Michael Pena) wound upbeing sent to San Quentin. Seems like there may be quite a bit more tothis rich kid's case than meets the eye.Haller is typical of the heroes you see in those Grisham novels/films.He knows when to play the system and when to buck it. He's a familyman, even though he and his wife, played by the luminous Marisa Tomei, are divorced. He puts in long hours to work on his cases – and why not,he gets a lot of money for doing so. He has an experiencedinvestigator, played by a scruffy-looking William H. Macy. He doesn'thave the affected twang of a Grisham hero, so his shtick here is hisomnipresent Lincoln. Except when it's not present, which is reallyquite often.Matthew McConnaughey tries his best, just as he does in most movies, but he's just up against too much predictability. As likable as he canbe in character – even when he's a bit of a jerk, like in TropicThunder, which got him this gig – his likability can only carry apicture so far. And although it helps that there are a lot of talentedfolks in the movie with him, their cache combined just isn't enough toovercome the overwrought, indifferent, cliché-riddled plot. McConnaughyis charming and sly, working the refs so effortlessly as an ethicallychallenged lawyer, that you almost forget that the conclusion isbasically forgone. Oh, sure there's a twist, if you can call it that. The movie even wants us to believe there are two of them. But The Lincoln Lawyer is just full of McGuffins, too many incidentalcharacters who nevertheless Mean Something, and way too much wastedtalent. It's done in by implausibilities and the notion that only theHero can figure anything out – if he doesn't, it means he's been set upor lied to. It's even sort of repetitive to have McConnaughey as thelead here; he already had the experience of being the Hero in theadaptation of Grisham's A Time to Kill. So, skip it. When your movie's big hook is that your hero operates hislaw practice out of his car, and then you show him driving himselfaround in other cars, or being driven around in other cars, or being incourt, or basically doing everything but conduct business out of theback of his car, then you have no hook. And, ergo, no movie.

A very lame adapted screenplay and not so good directing and editing

The white-washed, purified screenplay simply weakened the whole storyof the nicely crafted original novel written by Michael Connelly. Itpathetically avoided and omitted the most cruelty but also the mostshocking truth of this novel: The son was actuallythe masked culpritwho ruined his real-estate-broker mother. The movie also just water-colored the realistic and tough life of astruggling lawyer who did almost everything in a Lincoln Town Car. Thecasting was also not quite right on the money by signed up thebaby-face actor to play the role of the accused psychotic culprit, it'sjust too weak, but the actor who played the lawyer was a very goodchoice, very convincing and believable, while all the other casts, well, sadly to say, were just weaken too by the diluted screenplay. Ididn't find anything so suspenseful as when I read that novel and itssequel. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you read the originalnovel(s) instead of this lukewarm movie. Because it's 100 times better

Entertaining rendition of a good book

I read the book and it was a very good legal thriller with smart twists. I thought they did a good job in the film, especially when you consider that it was a complex story. I thought McConaughey was perfectly cast as the cagey, street wise lawyer.

A Time to DriveAway

A lot of people (well, critics) were proclaiming Matthew McConaughey's"triumphant" return to the courtroom since 1996's A Time to Kill is TheLincoln Lawyer. Hardly; on many accounts.First: I really, REALLY loved A Time to Kill, but it was still athoroughly fictional and Hollywoodized tale of the deep south, whereasThe Lincoln Lawyer was a much more realistic tale of the legal systemin modern L.A. Second: despite reading the very long John Grisham novel(twice) the movie wasn't all that predictable, whereas The LincolnLawyer was. Every step of the way. And third – BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST– the performances were hardly worthy of a mention in The LincolnLawyer whereas in A Time to Kill, they were brilliant.Okay, now that I debunked those nasty comparisons and hopefully helpedyou see this as two barely similar, but completely different courtroomtales, let's focus on this low-rent lawyer and how he defends theguilty to keep his car running in both this economy and with the risinggas prices.Mick Haller (McConaughey) works out of his car, a Lincoln to be precise– hence the film's (and from the adapted book) title, and he representsscum who are most likely and definitely guilty so he can continue his,uh, "practice" until one day he gets a tip that a high profile casemight be seeking him out.Louis Roulet (Phillippe) is accused of sexually assaulting and almostkilling a woman. He claims he's innocent and it's up to Mick who'sjuggling his ex-wife/fbuddy, a motorcycle gang and finances to defendthe pretty boy.Seriously…from the moment Louis enters the screen, you know how thiswill pan out or if he's guilty or not. The nice thing about this movieis: it doesn't matter. It's all about Mick both redeeming himself andhow on Earth will he get out of this? I like movies that havecharacters backed into corners and whether right or wrong, they have tofind a clever way out. Also, I LOVE courtroom dramas. Whether in filmor book format.Unfortunately, this isn't a great movie, or perfect lawyer yarn, butit's entertaining and suspenseful enough for a viewing. Yeah, 'a' as insingular. This is mainly due to its length and its multiple endings –God, I hate more than 1-2-3 or FOUR sometimes finales.Quite frankly, I'd much rather watch the (surprisingly superior) comedyLiar, Liar where another lawyer has to get out of an impossible trialwith a defendant who might be guilty. At least that entertained me, ata much quicker pace, less screen time and didn't take itself tooseriously.Overall, it's not a bad viewing…but at home. On the Freezone on yourDVR box from Cox Communications. Just don't expect this to be brieflymentioned at the next Oscars.

One of McConaugheys better performances

Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a well-known but little-respecteddefense attorney with a knack for getting his often shady clients outof sticky situations. He operates exclusively out of his Lincoln andrevels in the negative spotlight this puts him in in the eyes ofprosecutors and cops alike. When Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), theheir to a vast real estate fortune, is accused of the attempted murderof a prostitute and asks for him specifically, Haller thinks he's hitthe jackpot. Before long, however, his entire life is thrown into fluxas he finds his new client to be much more cunning and sadistic thananyone he's represented in the past. Knowing that he can't let Rouletget free, Haller must find a way to incriminate him without throwinghis own life away in the process.I have spent the last 10 or 15 years slamming on Matthew McConaughey'sacting ability at every opportunity. It's not that I hate the guy orthink that he's the worst actor in the world; I just don't think he'svery good and I do not understand his appeal. I've never found him tobe very charismatic and other than a few rare exceptions ("Dazed andConfused", "A Time to Kill") I usually hate his films. In his defense,he's been pigeon-holed into a relatively bad position wherein he's notgetting offers for leading roles in high quality films so he ends upstarring in worthless romantic comedies ("Failure to Launch") ordreadful action flicks ("Sahara") over and over again. His genuinelyfunny turn in "Tropic Thunder" suggests that he will be able to sustaina solid career if he can transition to a supporting role kind of actorbut until then, we're all going to be treated to films like "Ghosts ofGirlfriends Past." With that in mind, "The Lincoln Lawyer" was a very odd experience forme. I'll be honest: I expected to hate this film. Instead, I found itto be quite entertaining and at least half-way intelligent. Even moreshocking, McConaughey was without question the best part of the film. He's essentially the same character that he is in every film (overlyconfident, abundantly shallow, and constantly walking the line betweensleazy and charming) but for some reason (and believe me, I'm having ahard time writing this), it just works this time. Haller is an absurdcaricature, of course, and only a slight exaggeration of whom I expectMcConaughey is in real life, but there's more depth to him than to themajority of McConaughey's characters which I didn't expect. I actuallyrooted for Haller and McConaughey kept me interested in the film's ploteven when it bogged down into the typical shenanigans that plague mostcourtroom thrillers. On the flip side, though, there's Ryan Phillippe who yet again displaysthat he only has one skill: overacting. If you can harness that powerfor good ("MacGruber" and to a lesser extent, "Crash"), you can makePhillippe seem like a good actor. Most of the time, however, the resultis painful. Not to bash on McConaughey again but the truth is, ifyou're the second billed star in a film starring McConaughey, youshould dominate him from an acting standpoint. Instead, there arescenes in this movie in which you can almost feel the pain inMcConaughey's voice as he delivers his line knowing full well thatPhillippe is about to brutally murder any momentum he just created.Honestly, dear readers, this is one of the premier performances of theyear if, in fact, you are a voter for the Razzies. Just terrible. The rest of "Lincoln" pulls together nicely (with the exception of thestop-start-stop conclusion that lasts 10 minutes too long and involvesat least two more scene changes than necessary). It seems far too easyto compare this film to those based on the works of John Grisham butthat's exactly what this is: a Grisham byproduct. You know and expectthere to be twists and turns but the film manages to prevent them frombecoming too obvious and the methods Haller uses to work against Rouletare, at times, pretty darn smart. "Lincoln" is flawed but enjoyable andmanaged to keep my attention through each and every Phillippe assaulton my brain. Check out my site: www.thesoapboxoffice.blogspot.com

Great Adaptation

This review is from: Lincoln Lawyer (Amazon Instant Video) I loved the Mickey Haller series by Michael Connelly and was really excited when the movie adaptation of this one was announced.I was really pleased with the way the movie turned out. While certain elements and events were left out due to time constraints, as with any film, it held very close to the original story line.I would recommend this to anyone looking for a solid crime fiction story.

Enjoyable and slick - one of the better legal thrillers.

The basic premise is that Mick Haller(Matthew McConaughey) is a defencelawyer who takes on difficult cases and whose office is the back of hisLincoln car. However, when he promises to defend Beverly Hills rich boyLouis Roulet(Ryan Phillippe) in an assault and battery case, he findshe has bitten off more than he can chew.An interesting and entertaining, well-paced legal thriller that runsfor two hours and keeps you guessing the whole time. The film knowswhen to take a breather, to allow the viewer the chance to gather theirthoughts, and it also knows how to rev up the action when you leastexpect it.Both Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Phillippe were born to play theirrespective roles - nobody could have played them better - and MarisaTomei shows she is still a quality actress as Mick Haller's ex-wifeMaggie McPherson. The three lead characters are superb - Haller is the slick, high-flyinglawyer, Roulet is the good looking, arrogant playboy and McPherson isthe calm, steadying influence.Mick Haller's relationship with Maggie McPherson is exploited perfectlywithout getting in the way of the storyline and his relationship withhis chauffeur is kept to a minimum. The Lincoln is used sparingly and the time spent in court is alsomanaged successfully, so the story doesn't become too bogged down inthe legalities. The script is good, as it keeps the legal jargon to a minimum, andhumour is thrown in at times to lighten up the proceedings. There areseveral twists to the story which leave you thinking "How the hell isHaller going to get out of this one?" and the director Brad Furmanmakes good use of the L.A. landscape too.The support cast is strong, with competent performances from JoshLucas, Michael Pena and William H.Macy. Pena, in particular, plays avery emotive and, ultimately, very important role as a wronged man injail. His character helps to bring out a more humble side of Haller, aside we wouldn't otherwise see.Oh and finally, Matthew McConaughey still manages to have a scene wherehe can take his top off. I think it must be written into his contract.

Two Thumbs Up For Mr. Mcconaughey!!

Anything you have seen Mr.Mcconaughey in, you were usually disappointedwith the outcome of the movie. But this movie made me think twice aboutMr. Mcconaughey. What Mr. Mcconaughey did in this movie is rarely done ever (excludingColin Firth in The Kings Speech). He was able to capture the characterin the story and made it believable for the audience, it is as simpleas that. When I go to the movies, I want the believability. It alsohelps when you have a solid cast. In this case Marisa Tomei, William H.Macy, John Leguizamo, Josh Lucas, Frances Fisher, Michael Pena and RyanPhillippe. I know it is not an all star cast excluding Tomei and Macy, but they all bring their elements to this well filmed and solid piece. All in all, It was a very good movie and I urge Mcconaughey "skeptics"to see this film.8/10

Review Lincoln Lawyer

I know what you're thinking and I can agree with you that the name,Matthew McConaughey, does not instill great confidence that you'regoing to get a great movie experience. Now that is not to say thatMcConaughey hasn't done some great movies. For every Ghosts ofGirlfriend's Past, Sahara, and Failure to Launch there are We AreMarshall and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Lincoln Lawyer is luckilypart of the later group and reminds us that McConaughey can carry moviewithout having to take off his shirt in every scene.Lincoln Lawyer is a thrilling drama about a cocky and smooth defenseattorney Mick Haller, played by McConaughey, who represents ahigh-profile client on charges of attempted murder. But as new evidencecontinues to pile on, Mick starts to grow suspicious that perhaps hisclient isn't telling him everything. With twists and turns at everycorner, Lincoln Lawyer keeps you guessing till the very end. With the help of that distinct country voice and southern charm,McConaughey takes the movie to another level with this portrayal of thefast-talking lawyer. With the role of Mick, McConaughey is actuallygiven a chance to show off a range of emotions that will truly surpriseviewers. Mcconaughey doesn't carry this alone, Lincoln Lawyer gets somegreat acting from the likes of William H. Macy, Michael Pena, JohnLeguizamo, Josh Lucas, and Marisa Tomei. The only black sheep of hismovie comes from the alleged murderer Louis Roulet, played by the everwooden Ryan Phillippe. The only thing I find amazing from Phillippe'sattempt at acting is his unique talent to deliver every line ofdialogue without moving a single muscle on his face. The tension and intensity that begins to engulf Mike as the casecontinues is stellar. Lincoln Lawyer really pushes Mike to edge as hiswhole world becomes begins to collapse due to his Attorney-Clientrelationship. This is where Lincoln Lawyer really comes alive anddelivers a must see movie experience. The court room scenes are some ofmy favorite scenes in the movie and there are plenty. The approach theytook to portraying the lawyer aspect of the film feels accurate andrealistic. The plot is solid and keeps you invested right from thebeginning and keeps the grip tight throughout the movie. The moviekeeps a good pacing and the dialogue is smart and witty. The film'scolor and camera work gives a very raw feel although at times it can bea little too unstable. The story and characterization is done well butthere are a few things that should have been given more focus, likeMike and Maggie's relationship and more insight as to why they gotdivorced. The movie touches on the idea with a scene or two but neverreally reveals too much. We also never really get too much on Mike'srelationship with his daughter. My biggest problem with the film wasthe underwhelming ending that really had everything necessary to endthe movie with, but still felt lackluster when it came. However, don'tlet these few problems sway you. I strongly recommend this film andpromise you that you will leave satisfied.-www.MovieFloss.com
