Could Have Been A Lot Better
Let's cut to the chase here. This movie has a lot in it, but it sums up to a lot of nothing. The reason for that is mainly because the main character, the spoiled rich guy played by Seth Rogan has such a blatant disrespect for Kato. That's it in a nutshell. Throughout the entire movie, Kato is the real driving force behind everything while Green Hornet takes all the credit and basically fails to recognize Katos abilities or appreciate him, even in the end (I didn't believe his trite contrition at the end).A lot happens throughout the movie, yet none of it really matters much because it all boils down to such a total disrespect for Kato. Green Hornet reminds me of a corporation's attitude toward its employees. Maybe that's the real theme here. Maybe that is why this movie has really turned off so many people. Green Hornet is the figurehead while Kato does all the real thinking and all the grunt work. Who gets all the credit? Green Hornet, of course. Who is Kato? Nuff said. The movie could have really sparkled if Green Hornet had of come off with a different attitude, a bit if humility, instead of the selfish lout Rogan played. I don't fault Rogan as much as the script or the director for that, unless Rogan had a hand in that in the first place!I only give it three stars for all the special effects and for the effort Kato put into this and... Cameron Diaz... She didn't really have a lot to do except kick Green Hornet in the gonads, but that was worth it.Guess I don't have to not-recommend this one. Enough people figured that out on their own.

Hoping for more story and fewer explosions, I got bored with it
This review is from: The Green Hornet (Amazon Instant Video) I like the premise - bored rich kid starts dreaming of hero status cloaked in a super hero-like car and outfit with a side-kick who's really the only stud of the pair. Rich kid does this following the death of his father, who owns a newspaper and never really had time for the kid. Eventually what started as a night of defacing property turns into vigilantism and eventually ridding the city of criminals at the highest level. That sounds good right? The problem... way too little character development for me to be sympathetic to the cause, and way too many explosions and high speed chases to find much continuity in the story. Seeking to finish out the film I focused on what I liked. I liked the car - very cool and I want one. I liked most of the banter between The Green Hornet and Kato. Actually, Kato was the best part of the movie; smart, handsome and the mastermind behind The Green Hornet and his gadgets. The Green Hornet really comes off as an oaf who simply follows Kato around, pretending he's in charge of Kato. Overall this movie was a 'C' on an A to F scale. It will appeal to boys and men more than it will to women, and much of it is so loud with car chases and explosions, that some will find it tough to hear the dialogue when it occurs. It's not offensive, but much of it was tedious and boring. If it weren't for watching it with my family I would have turned it off and not finished it. The cool cars, fight scenes where Kato kicks a**, and the occasionally humorous exchanges, were the only good parts for me. And just in case you think "She's a girl...and that's probably why she didn't like it." Some of my favorite films are the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon movies. FYI.

Campy, corny, but visually entertaining.
I've been keeping my expectations low for this film and I'm glad that Idid. I was a big fan of the 60's television show, but I didn't watchany episodes until the mid 90's; so I've been waiting almost 15 yearsfor a film adaptation on the Green Hornet. The film is campy, the story is corny, the villain is wasted and SethRogen wrote the script. Based on the plot and the dialogs, it's not awell made movie; but it doesn't try to be. This movie could have beenwritten more seriously and be on the same map as a Christopher Nolan'sBatman film; but instead, it went on the road to be a comedic film witha lot of explosions. Some stuff didn't work, other stuff was clever &visually entertaining. The stuff that I admired the most are the homage to the originaltelevision show. There were some criticism to the 60's show about howthe Kato character was just a sidekick, butler, manservant, an aid or achauffeur to the Green Hornet. Bruce Lee didn't have much dialogs andhe didn't have much screen time. It was during the 60's and just havingan Asian-American to be an everyday character on a show was a big deal,so I never saw that as an insult. In this movie, they make a HUGE dealabout that subject as Seth Rogen & Jay Chou are constantly arguingabout Kato's role throughout the whole film.Other homage to the television show is a drawn image of Bruce Lee, AlHirt's theme "Flight of the Bumblebee" tune, and there's even ascenario from my favorite episode that has been written into the movie. The Black Beauty is also a very awesome car! The funny thing is that inthe TV show, the Black Beauty was a brand new & very recent 1966Imperial Crown sedan. In the movie, it's the exact same vehicle; butit's now a classical vintage car.I saw the 3D version and there were very few sequences where the 3Deffects was worth the extra price of admission. I recommend saving yourmoney and watch the 2D version instead. To finally sum everything up; the movie isn't good, but it brought backmy love for the characters inside the Green Hornet world. The film isvisually entertaining for what it is. I hope there's a sequel, but thatsomebody else will write its screenplay.

this movie was pretty sweet
I'm anticipating this release; it's a very entertaining movie with a great cast. Those of you who don't like it- you must be too old to appreciate this style of humor. The theater was roaring with laugher!

The Green Hornet Barely Flutters By
I had no idea the newspaper business could be so lucrative. Accordingto Hollywood, if you own your own newspaper in Los Angeles, you will beable to become a millionaire with your own fleet of vintage cars, manyservants in a huge mansion and a lazy 30-year-old son that mooches offyour hard work. With that ridiculous premise, the story line of "TheGreen Hornet" emerges and the rest of film feeds off of the improbable. And yes, I do understand that this is a superhero fantasy flick, butc'mon it has to have some realism to it.The newspaper owner is James Reid (played by Tom Wilkinson). James isthe demanding, overbearing father of the film's protagonist Britt ReidA.K.A. the Green Hornet (played by Seth Rogan). Britt is the30-year-old man living in his father's pool house with no ambition inlife other than to sleep with beautiful women and party nonstop (cometo think of it, that is the ambition of most men). His fatherrepresents the hard work ethic the newspaper was founded on and he isoutraged that his son is not contributing to society. James is writingarticles on how society is being torn apart by the criminal underworldin L.A. while Britt is doing nothing but being a bum.The mastermind behind all of Los Angeles' criminal activities isChudnofsky (played by Oscar winner Christoph Waltz). Chudnofsky (whosename cannot be pronounced correctly by anyone in the film) is a villainwho has great ambition that is followed up with very little character. And yes, we are supposed to believe all of Los Angeles' criminalactivities can be controlled by one man. Do you know how many peoplelive in Los Angeles? Again we are brought back to a ridiculous premise. The concept here is that one man rules all of the wrong doings in acity of millions. It would take an army of trained martial arts expertsto stop this madness.Enter Kato. Jay Chou plays Kato, The Green Hornet's sidekick. Is thisthe same character that was played by legendary martial arts expertBruce Lee in the 1960s TV show now played by a Taiwanese pop star? Yep.I had to look Chou up on Wikipedia too. It seems that this guy whowrote and performed several pop music hits in the Pacific Rim is alsoqualified to fill Lee's shoes.I will give credit where credit is due; Chou's action scenes are goodwith the help of the computer-generated images and the 3D. Oh no, Ialmost overlooked the fact that this was a 3D film; I forgot I waswatching this film in 3D until the end when the credits were rolling in3D animation. Do you know why I forgot it was in 3D? Because it wasn'tgood "Avatar" 3D, it was terrible "let's shoot this in 2D then if thebudget allows, we'll add on 3D in post production" 3D.Kato and Britt unite to cause some vandalism and in the process theystop a crime and become renegades themselves. They devise an idea to bevigilantes that help the citizens but are still wanted by the cops andthe villains. With that reasoning the villains won't have any leverageagainst them if they think The Green Hornet is a villain himself. I amstill trying to comprehend it myself.Should you see this movie? Go ahead and wait for the DVD rental on thisone. The story was lazy with no surprising twists (there was one twistbut it wasn't surprising). Waltz was not used to his full capabilities. After seeing his performance in "Inglorious Basterds" we can expectfuller characters from him. The fight scenes (when done in properlighting) were great. There were some memorable jokes but most of thathumor was aimed a younger audience (ages 13-18). Rogan has a talent ofyelling his lines and still making them come off as funny. However, continuing that method in every movie will result with him being lessand less funny. Rogan will soon run the risk of being the next JackBlack by being a one dimensional funny man.

Entertaining Movie, Horrible 3D Transfer
This review is from: The Green Hornet (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD) (Blu-ray) The movie itself isn't my issue. I think Green Horney is a noble attempt at something different for the super hero genre. It's not great, but it borders on good by using its own charm to perpetuate itself. While Michel Gondry doesn't always hit the mark, it's quirky enough that I enjoyed my experience with this film. As for this Bluray, however, I've got my reservations. For starters, the 3D process used in post production was poorly done. At its very best moments, this 3D conversion allows for a few still, tightly focused shots to look like it was naturally shot in 3D. For the rest, it makes the film slightly unwatchable. The quick cuts leave no time to analyze the depth, so you have no idea what action is taking place. There's an awkward cross fade halfway through the film, and it's incredibly hard to focus on two entirely different planes of perspective. None of the actors really seems defined in their 3D space, and its more like the area around them is being highlighted. I noticed an ongoing theme where the top part of the screen is further away, and the bottom part is closer. While I'm sure that choice was mostly dictated by shot composure,it never feels right.I hate to end on a bad note, but the best way I can sum it up is that most 3D TVs have an onboard feature that lets them convert 2D to 3D on the fly. It never works and is mostly an irritant - and that's exactly how I feel about this 3D Bluray.

Rogan Slapstick Comedy? Thumbs up - Super Hero Movie? Thumbs Down
Whatever expectation you had walking in to see Seth Rogan's GreenHornet will ultimately determine how you feel when it's over. Formonths I heard the criticism that Rogan would turn the Green Hornet, asomewhat campy, 1930's Radio character, into his own brand of slapstickand half witted wanna be super hero.... and than there were theresponses that "No, Rogan wants to do justice to the history of thecharacter"... I have to believe watching it that Rogan DID intend tomake a super hero movie along the lines of the Batman, Superman,Spiderman, Iron Man venues.. with just enough camp and humor to keep uslaughing in between the action... But for the most part I think hemissed the mark. Some gags went on too long, some sequences between Heand Kato became tedious. I think what was missing for me was that BrittReid didn't seem to grow into his role as the Green Hornet and thestage was certainly set for that to happen. Rogan's portrayal waspretty much the same at the start of the film as it was at the end. After having just watched a marathon of the GH TV series from the60's.. Rogan and Chou were no Van Williams and Bruce Lee - I think thisfilm is okay as long as you walk in with an expectation that you aregoing to see a Seth Rogan comedy film....with a bunch of shooting inbetween.... Don't go in thinking you are going to feel the same waywhen as might have at the end of Iron Man or Spider Man ....

Too bad it was only the weight .....
In a nutshell, much was said prior to the release of this junk about SR shedding weight for this role. Well, too bad he did nothing to also shed or at least ease up on his worn-out on-screen persona. It has officially grown WAY PAST irritating!

Uninspired
The Green Hornet is a very old hero character, dating back to radiodramas in the 30's, playing alongside The Shadow, Buck Rogers, and TheLone Ranger. (In fact, the Green Hornet was a spin off of The LoneRanger... The Lone Ranger was the Green Hornet's grand-uncle, in theradio world.) Like his contemporaries he appeared in other media, including television. The television series, which featured 1/2 hoursegments, starred Bruce Lee as Kato, and was his boost into celebrity. The great Bruce Lee martial arts movies might never have happened if itweren't for his gig on the Green Hornet. The Green Hornet may have also been Bob Kane's inspiration for Batmanin 1939. There are many similarities, which need not be listed here. But alas, this feature film remake is a dull take on this oldcharacter, which deserved better treatment. I don't know exactly howSeth Rogen (who played Britt Reid and who has a writing credit) got ahold of it, but it's as though someone behind the scenes mistook theGreen Hornet for a farce comedy like Get Smart and then failed to evenmake it funny. The dialog had no horsepower at all, and while there were a few funnymoments, after a while I got aggravated at the desperate attempts tomake me laugh. Sometimes it seemed like the actors were derailed, trying to improvise, and it wasn't working. There were two cool things about the TV series. 1) Kato, because hekicks butt. They got lucky, because Bruce Lee really was one-of-a-kind.2) Black Beauty, their armed car that flips up from the garage floorand has guns built into it. While both of these aspects remained prettycool in this movie, they were also elevated a little too far into therealm of fantasy. And it didn't need to be that way.Not a good offering by director Michel Gondry, who gave us thebrilliant and original Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind years ago,and it may mean that he's one of those directors who cannot improve --or does not see improvements in -- a script. He therefore shines whenhe gets a great script and fails when he gets a bad one. Tim Burtonfalls into that category. The movie villain was played by Christoph Waltz, whose character was noless dumb than Seth Rogen's. A bad choice for an actor who just won anOscar for his brilliant role as Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds. What was his agent thinking? In all fairness, Waltz and his agentcouldn't have known beforehand that The Green Hornet was going to be asloppy script, and a sloppy execution. The super-hero wave is a big oneat the movies these days, with one hit after the other, but they failto remember other sloppy remakes of old radio heroes, such as TheShadow in 1994 starring Alec Baldwin, and The Legend of the Lone Rangerin in 1981 starring Klinton Spilsbury (who??). The Green Hornet should have been a much more serious period movie setin the 30's about a man who is inspired to fight the mob in the fashionthat his grand-uncle did as the Lone Ranger years earlier. That wouldhave led to a serious Lone Ranger tie-in (a prequel as it were). Missedopportunities. Save your $8, this movie isn't worth it.

Seth Rogen Is Odd Casting Choice
In "The Green Hornet," Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), the son of metropolitan newspaper publisher James Reid (Tom Wilkinson), spends his days carousing, throwing wild parties, drinking to excess, and passing out, much to the chagrin of his father. When his father unexpectedly dies, Britt is thrust into his father's job -- a job he's unqualified for and doesn't take seriously. To strike back at a father who may have been the toast of the city but was a cold, distant dad, Britt enlists the assistance of his father's automobile mechanic, Kato (Jay Chou), in some local vandalism. Security cameras pick up their grainy images but the newspaper staff assumes the perpetrators are members of a gang. Britt orders his staff to write about the unidentified culprit and give him a snappy name that will sell papers. They call him "The Green Hornet." Up until this point, the film isn't bad, and it promises some interesting dramatic moments balanced with action. But director Michel Gondry goes the route of camp in gagging up every situation that follows, with Rogen's mugging and terrible acting undermining any attempt at a decent picture.Rogen is a limited actor who has become identified with man-boy social-misfit roles. In that capacity he's fine and has developed a fan base. But he is clearly not action hero material. He goes through the motions, recites the lines, and tries to look determined, but we never once believe his character as a serious threat to the bad guys. His Green Hornet is a human cartoon doing everything but running off a cliff and remaining suspended in midair as he looks helplessly toward the camera.Chou's Kato comes off as interesting, but he can't sell the comedic side of his role. It appears he has all he can handle to deliver his dialogue in English. There's no irony, no timing, and no sense of humor in lines meant to elicit chuckles. In the action department, Chou is more effective showing off Kato's lightning-fast karate moves and proficiency at building amazing gadgets and equipping cars with gimmicky weaponry.Satisfying the unwritten rule of action movies that in stature the bad guy must equal or even surpass that of the hero, Christoph Waltz plays Chudnofsky, the deadly crime king of the city. In an opening scene that borrows the menace of Waltz's Nazi officer from "Inglourious Basterds," Chudnofsky shows that despite his mild-mannered appearance and soft-spoken voice, he is a formidable villain. Equipped with a dual-barreled pistol, he is adept at knocking off upstart criminals, including James Franco in an unbilled cameo role, who threaten to muscle in on his turf. Cameron Diaz plays a secretary hired by Britt shortly after he takes over at the newspaper. Modeled on girl-Friday Pepper Potts in the "Iron Man" films, Diaz' Lenore Case has little to do that is significant to the plot and is present primarily for attractive window dressing in this testosterone-driven flick. There are some good action sequences in "The Green Hornet," including one involving several cement mixers, excitingly staged car chases, and an improbable scene in which a severed car continues its rampage through an office building.Humor is a tricky element in an action picture. It has to be incorporated in measured doses to be effective. The original "Superman" movie got it right, charming the viewer with gentle comedy without turning its superhero into the object of jokes. "The Green Hornet" looks as if a group of drunk, rich fraternity brothers put it together, assuming their sophomoric approach was hugely entertaining. When Hollywood throws its money into an ill-conceived project like this, it can only result in a dud. "The Green Hornet" is rated PG-13 for violent mayhem and strong language.

I liked it.
This review is from: The Green Hornet (Amazon Instant Video) This was a pretty good movie. I really expected not to like it. I laughed at the banter between the two leads.Seth is Seth. His personality is going to show through any role he plays. I find him to be very funny. The Kato character was just what I was hoping for plus more. The ONLY thing that killed this movie in spots was Cameron Diaz. To quote a line from Family Guy: "Meg is Awful". Christoph Woltz. The man is just too talented. He actually made me feel a bit sympathetic for him and his quest to be feared even though he already was.The small homage to Bruce Lee was very cool.

I dont understand where the hate is coming from. Green Hornet is hilarious and exciting!
I watched the original show when I was younger, but I grew up way after the show was made so I didn't grow up watching it on Saturday mornings or anything. And I basically only watched it because Bruce Lee was in it. That being said, I enjoyed this movie immensely. I knew going in that it was going to put an emphasis on comedy, which some reviewers here seem to have been surprised by. It was written by and stars Seth Rogan. What were you expecting? And it's not as if the comedy is out of place in the context of the movie. It's perfectly suited for the movie since a lot of it is physical comedy(not campy style though). And the dialogue is pretty witty and just as hilarious as the physical comedy. Some lines genuinely had me cracking up. But let's say you're not interested in the comedy. OK, the action is awesome as well. The fight scenes are all pretty original and very cool. And the Black Beauty is amazing. They did so much cool stuff with that car.How about the story? It's extremely solid, better than most action-comedies. It centers around organized crime and corruption and does so in a pretty interesting way. Sure, you see the "bad guy" twist coming from a mile away and it meanders a bit in the second half before the climax but it's still a solid and entertaining plot. And if you did watch the original show then you should appreciate the little nods the movie gives, like Kato making a comment about being too fast to be captured on film on television. This of course being a reference to Bruce Lee's movements being too fast for the camera film of the time of the original show, which meant he had to slow down his punches for the show. And references like that are sprinkled throughout the film. All in all it's a really fun, really entertaining movie that does exactly what it set out to do. It's going in my collection because I wanted to watch it again as soon as it ended.

What the heck was this?
After wasting two hours watching this movie I notice that it is considered a comedy as well as action/adventure. Well, as a comedy it is not a typical one. It is the type of comedy that only few people enjoy. As action/adventure it fails because the lame comedy plot around everything that happens ruins what little it had as that. I think this movie deserves all the one star reviews it got. I cannot say "don't watch it" because, who knows, you may be one of the few that likes it. Don't expect to use your brain while watching it. Nothing there requires the least amount of deductive thinking.

Dont waste your time
I am only placing a warning here. For many unexceptional movies, I might warn you not to waste yourmoney. Tickets are not cheap and 3D ticket are even more expensive. For the Green Hornet, don't waste your time. This is two hours you willnever get back. From the horrid script to the uninspired action, this is a movie toavoid. Even with significant effects, the core of this failure is thecomplete inability to see Seth Rogan as a hero. Unlikeable andunintelligent, he is the core reason for this movie's failure.Save your time. Save your money. Go see something else.

Really?
As far as I'm concerned this movie was great. Anyone expecting to go to a movie called The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen and expecting to see Christian Bale bellowing in a low-tone voice was/is delirious. Stop comparing it to Batman. Batman is what it is, it's redefining super heroes on the serious level, but that doesn't mean every super hero has to be Batman. This movie to me was absolutely hilarious. Seth Rogen, from my view, essentially played Tobias Funke(David Cross) from Arrested Development and somehow turned him into a semi-serious crime fighter.Bottom line is don't go to a movie with expectations unless you were a real serious fan to begin with.

Oh my God it has imagination, humor and originality. It stinks!
If you think X-Men Origins: Wolverine was an OK movie, then The GreenHornet is not for you. If on the other hand, you enjoyed the hell outof stuff like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, then you may spendtwo great hours with this fresh and irreverent take on an old"super-hero".The Green Hornet answers the question: What if you gave an incrediblytalented 10 years old kid a couple of million dollars to make anaction-adventure movie? That's what Michel Gondry is. The film is fullwith all his beautiful creativity, simple but marvelous ideas that makeyou smile, like a LP record player in the backside of ejectable sits,to enjoy some classic tunes while you surf the sky.If thinking outside the box scares you, if the thought of taking guysin spandex and crime-fighting with masks not so seriously makes youcringe, then stay away from this. Otherwise, prepare yourself for somefun.

What Can I Say? Im Sorry, but I Loved It!
I'll stand my ground in face of all the very bad reviews: I just lovethis movie! It's one of those that I can watch again and again everytime is aired on cable TV. I can't get tired of it! Why? I have noclue.Maybe because it has nothing of the things I hate in a movie.Maybe because I don't know Seth from other movies, or because I justenjoy Seth's way as an actor.Maybe because of the basic story (rich orphan boy becomes hero; sidekick is a genius; wonderful gadgets etc.). Certainly the Black Beauty.Everyone plays his or her role just as he or she should. Cameron isperfect. Kato's fight sequences are original and, yet, pay homage tothe hero played by the great Bruce Lee in the Sixties. The story is interesting. Lot's of things are really original, not theleast the combat sequence within the newspaper's facilities. The Green Hornet has a "yummy" quality for me, which I can't and didn'ttry to reason about. The are many movies that don't have this quality.Avatar is one of them: I don't know why, but once is enough...It's just the popcorn movie I seek for when I go to the cinema...As I said, I'm sorry, but I really love The (new) Green Hornet.

Trognovsky is such a cool bad guy
Britt Reid is the son of a millionaire owner of the only remainingindependent newspaper in LA. As a child he got into a fight where hewas trying to save a boy being bullied, and he was the one who got intotrouble and sent home. As such he would become a major disappointmentto his father, and this is seen when he grows up to become a playboysponging off of his Dad's money. However, as his mother died when theywere young, he never had any brothers or sisters as his father neverremained. Then, suddenly, his father died and Britt is left with his inheritance. When he discovers that his father's mechanic, Kato, is like a 'swissarmy knife' (always discovering something new) he decides to become asuper hero and follow his dream of seeking justice. The 'bad guy' is apsychotic Russian named Trognosky who has a inate desire to be feared, and if he is not feared then he does something mean and bad so thatpeople will remember to fear him. Obviously Britt and Trognosky willcross paths soon. However, it is Britt's plan to become a criminal as ameans to defeat the criminals that really raised Trognosky's ire, andusing his influence in the media, he creates his alter ego, the GreenHornet. While one cannot look too deeply into a super-hero action movie, theGreen Hornet is about a coming of age. With the death of his fatherBritt must now look after himself, and discovers this when hisfavourite coffee is not made the day after his dad dies, namely becausehe has sacked everybody, including Kato. While prior to his father'sdeath he had everything handed to him, he must now go out and do thingsfor himself, and he also discovers, when he hires a new secretary, thatnot every woman is interested in sleeping with him.The one important thing that he learns is through Kato. While Katostarted off as a poor street kid with exceptional skills, it is Brittwho must come to terms that simply being rich does not necessarily meanthat everything is his for the taking, nor is he capable of doinganything and everything. He needs help, and with that help, he needs towillingly give the other people credit. While he may be a fearsomeopponent in his mask, he does not know how to repair a car, nor does heknow how to really fight. It is the humiliation of needing a 'gas gun'while Kato is a weapon unto himself, that pushes him to thisrevelation. In the end he not only comes to understand that while his dad may nothave been able to show much kindness and heart beyond his stonyexterior, his father was a good man that had principles. While he hasalso learned that he cannot expect to be given everything, and moreso,he needs assistance, especially if he wants to be a superhero.
