With great power comes great irresponsibility
"The Devils Double" gives a slice of life when wealth and power areserved in large portions (and Papa the great is always around to pickup the tab!). Son of Saddam Hussein sitting high up on the food chain,Uday Hussein's lust for power, cocaine and woman is something thatcannot be tamed. On the other hand there is God fearing and high onmoral upbringing Latif Yahiya, who is coerced into signing a pact withthe devil.Dominic Cooper breathes life into the Gemini characters, the Dr. Jekyll& Mr. Hyde act is indeed Academy awards material. When he dons the capof Uday Hussein, there is a striking rawness in his performance whichmakes it stunningly good. When he switches to Latif Yahiya, he ismeasured and precise to highlight the anguish and suffocation withinthe walls of a golden palace but smeared in blood. Sarrab (LudivineSagnier) is love-interest to both Uday Hussein and Latif Yahiya. In thepenultimate moments she ends being a contrived character. The storystays focused on the junior, owing to which Saddam Hussein (PhilipQuast) is on purpose relegated to the background, however the dictatorin his prime comes across quite virile and commanding.Verdict: Quite an interesting watch indeed!

Not for the Faint of Heart
The Devil's Double is a film based on the memoirs of Latif Yahai whoacted as Uday Hussein's double. Uday one of Saddam Hussein's sons is amorally depraved, addict, rapist, who's psychopathic behaviourtransforms any person around him -especially Uday- into * Schrödinger'scat. *The Devil's Double is directed by Lee Tamahori whose filmographyincludes; Next, Die another Day, and The Edge. Based on the book by thesame name and written by Latif Yahai. Similar films: Bronson.Despite it's interesting premise The Devil's Double fails on manylevels. Rather than being a political or revealing documentary likefilm, it settles for 108 minutes of violence, with a few news clips inbetween. The script and overall story line or lack there of does nothighlight the main themes of sacrificing oneself only to transform intoa devil, but focuses on a convoluted millionaire's fear and terrortactics. focusing mostly on violence the fine line of becoming not only thephysical form of someone but mental form of someone could have beenexplored further. The acting in the film is what makes it worthwatching, Dominic Cooper who was just recently in Captain America doesthe difficult job of portraying both Uday and Latif. His frighteningreal portrayal of Uday makes me truly believe he is a devil. The onlyflaw is the lack of personality overlap by the seemingly incorruptibleLatif. Not for the faint of heart The Devils' Double although, unfulfillingshowcases Dominic Cooper's skillful acting and includes some thoughtprovoking sub-text.--6/10--

Struggle between the life of a mans family and serving a evil tyrant
The trailer to this movie was intriguing, now was this movie was greatas the trailer made it seem. Not really but it's still a pretty darngood movie that shows how evil and sadistic a person can get inhistory. The movie starts out really interesting and the acting by theactor that plays two characters was almost superb. It was amazing tosee an actor play two completely different characters, each very wellacted as the other. The story is this, and yes this is based on thetrue story not sure how much of this movie is true. But a lot of thestuff happening in this movie was plausible. Anyways there is this guynamed Latif Yahia who wants to serve his country but is forced to servea evil sadistic tyrant Uday Hussein. Who is almost the epitome of evilbecause of his very corrupt actions and his crime towards humanity. Themain struggle in this movie is how Latif and his decisions, how heeither has to serve Uday and help him in his corrupt and evil ways orsee the death of his family. And the constant struggle between thesetwo options is the main center of the plot. The problem with this moviethough is how it draws you in for a bit over an hour but start to loseit's edge a bit into the movie. It just seemed like the movie waslonger than it had to be, the plot isn't convoluted at all. And for asimple story as this, the movie just seemed to be drawn out after awhile. But overall it's a movie that is worth seeing, since the shockvalue of it all. How one man can cause so much suffering while anotheris forced to watch and help the man behind the suffering.7.6/10

An interesting movie
In that you forget the same actor is playing both roles and for a fewminutes, you forget that it IS an actor, and you think you are gettinga peak into this regime.A key point. The character I felt that should have gotten a lot morescreen time and didn't was Saddam Hussein himself. Saddam only appearsin a couple of scenes, as does the other son, Qusay.Still, this is an interesting movie, in that we get a glimpse of whatthings were like within the Iraqi regime. We see Latif, who is a decentman, dragged into this awful world. What is lacking is the the relationship that Uday had with the rest ofhis family, other than an implication he had an incestuous relationshipwith his mother, or maybe a mother surrogate. It was also implied Udaywas gay.Still,it's a pretty good movie, and definitely worth watching.

Great movie, incredible script and Dominics crown jewel
The film, centered on the story of a simple man entering the lewduniverse of Hussein's era of corruption. My favorite thing about thefilm is the unlikeness to the autocratic Muslim country often portrayedin movies, that many people will find in the constant drugging, sex,and very little if no references to God. Dominic's acting really filledthe picture there, the only thing that approaching the two charactersis the stunning physical similarity, Uday and Latif are two verydifferent people, the first being completely psychotic and the second adevoted son. The only thing keeping me from awarding a perfect scoretwo the films is the lack of acting in the female lead, Sarrab'scharacter having a positively bipolar behavior and the somewhat unevenstyle of directing. Otherwise a very good movie.

I made you Latif! I MADE YOU!
When they were filming Scarface I don't think they thought that thelines "Say hello to my little friends" was going to be absorbed intopopular culture. Neither do I believe that Michael Thomas the screenwriter of The Devil's Double think that the line above "I made youLatif, I MADE YOU !" would stick in the heads of not only me but myother friends who went to watch the Devil's Double last night. Based onthe true story of Latif Yahia, the man forced to become the Fiday orbody Double of Uday , Saddam Hussein's oldest and psychotic son. Bothparts are played by actor Dominic Cooper ( Mamma Mia!, An Education,History Boys) a huge departure form his "softer" roles, where heusually plays a love interest or gentleman. He is so convincing, thatyou forget that you are watching one guy playing two roles, wellactually three, Uday, Latif, Latif being Uday! It's confusing justsaying it, try doing it! The film itself is loud, colorful and so'80's, not that I remember them very well but having seen a few '80'smovies recently I marveled at where they got the shiny suits from! Itis definitely a guy's movie, (but the girls will be captivated byDominic in all his guises) and by that I mean fast cars, mustaches, cigars and lots of semi naked girls! There's a bit of a love triangle,Uday, Sarrab,(played by hot French actress Ludivine Sagnier, see TheSwimming Pool) Latif. It's fast paced, action packed and does make youthink, how could a guy survive that life? What were his options? Ohyeah, a bit of techie stuff, it was filmed on R.E.D the new digitalsystem, see if you can tell the difference in picture quality. Ienjoyed it, my bro's enjoyed it. See for yourself.

Entertaining, if deeply flawed, film
Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper) is a patriotic Iraqi soldier who findshimself brought in by Uday Hussein (also Cooper), a former classmateand son of Saddam to whom he bears an uncanny resemblance. Uday wantshim to become his body double to protect him from potentially dangeroussituations, and make appearances while Uday indulges in women, drinkand drugs. Latif refuses, only to be tortured and beaten until heagrees. After undergoing some minor plastic surgery and given some faketeeth, Latif shadows Uday and realises he is an absolute psychopath, raping and murdering women as well as torturing anyone who challengesor opposes him. Uday's mistress Sarrab (Ludivine Sagnier), tired ofUday's unpredictable nature and wild behaviour, shows interest inLatif, and the two start a dangerous affair. The story of Latif Yahia has been dubbed dubious by variousinvestigative journalists due to inconsistencies in his stories andclaims by associates of Uday Hussein's that he never used body doubles. That aside, it makes for a quite fascinating story, if a not whollybelievable one. Instead of fashioning a serious film about one of thekey figures in the troubled and violent recent history of Iraq, director Lee Tamahori (whose recent films include the shitty Bond filmDie Another Day (2002) and Nicolas Cage vehicle Next (2007)) has made agangster film. It plays out like Scarface in Baghdad, and is full ofviolence, drugs and women, and all but ignores the political and socialaspects. It's the main problem with the film, as although this has thepotential to be a very good film, the execution is that seen a thousandtimes before in the gangster genre. In the hands of someone like DavidFincher or Michael Mann, this could have been something much more. However, the film has a trump card in the form of lead Dominic Cooper, who juggles dual roles with apparent ease. I've never been his biggestfan (he's hardly been stretched in his career), but he shows here thathe has leading man qualities. Although his portrayal of Uday is wildlyover-the-top to the point of a cartoon character sometimes, it'sclearly as the director intended, and he switches from the broodingLatif to the psychopathic Uday effortlessly. So whether you believe thestory or not (I don't), it makes for an entertaining, if deeply flawed, film, and Uday Hussein proves a terrifying madman, especially giventhat he was very real (before US forces killed him in 2003).www.the-wrath-of-blog.blogspot.com

Acting is what we see
This is the first time I am writing a review about any movie and iguess its coppers acting and lee's direction that made me write one. Itwas an absolute mature direction and acting. Each and every scene isworth paying for. I have never came across such a brilliant dual roleperformance in any cinema in the past so many years of entertainment. You don't realise during the play that it's the same person whoperformed these two roles which you are looking it. It's a thrillthrough out the movie. Casting would have done very sensitively forsure. Cooper has beaten all the records in performance by any maleactors for me so far. I would highly recommend watching this masterpiece on big screen as it worth a lot more showing price then what youwill pay for. 100 out of 10 for me.

The story, wow! Dominic Cooper wow!
I just saw the Devil's Double, I'm so proud! We've had a few films madehere in Malta but for me, this is the absolute best! while they werefilming here there was a big buzz about the movie and the cast, butseeing it for the first time on screen really gave me goosebumps. A fewpeople I know worked on it as extras so it's fun for me to see if I canspot them but the story, wow! Dominic Cooper wow! The whole film looksgreat, great action and suspense and also tragedy, I can't believethose things really went on. Altogether a movie Malta should be proudof! Go see The Devil's Double! 10/10 ********** Best of the Best THEDEVIL'S DOUBLE one of the year's best films.

The Devils Double, twice the performance and Top Movie1010
After the slew of Iraq movies, all of them from the American soldiersperspective (Green Zone, The Hurt Locker, Three Kings) I found thesubject matter of this film to be a refreshing change. What most peopleknow or remember of Gulf war one, is completely overshadowed by Gulfwar Two/ Iraqi Freedom. So to be able to go back in time and get aglimpse of Baghdad in it's hey day was a remarkable break from "Victorymovies", this is the only movie about Iraq to date as seen from anIraqi viewpoint. Yes, it's violent (not necessarily moreso than Saw,Texas chainsaw massacre et al) but then since it is a portrayal ofevents in a real persons life would you want it any other way? DominicCooper is just fantastic, he inhabits both characters flawlessly andfor the most part you genuinely believe that he is two people. As for the excess, obscenity, gratuitous violence and material wealththat some other reviewers have complained about, well, that was Bagdadin the '80's, does it have to be dressed up in Military Fatiguesscreaming "U.S.A" to be a good movie? If you liked Scarface, if youwant an action packed ride, if you love depth of colour and sound inyour movie. If you want to see great acting from Dominic Cooper, thenthis is the movie for you. When you go see it, ask yourself, what would you have done in the samesituation as the main character Latif Yahia? Could you have survived, because, unless you hadn't heard it is based on a true story.Watch and Enjoy, I have watched it twice and want to watch it againbecause each time I watch it I can't believe it's over, I want more!Stories like this don't come around everyday. Unless of course you wantto watch another Hurt Locker, it may have won a lot of Oscars but TheDevil's Double deserves more.

A little bit Scarface a little bit Godfather
First of all Dominic Cooper deserves some kind of award for his dualperformance. I am surprised that he wasn't nominated for something. This movie did very poorly at the box office which may explain the lackof recognition by all the film critic awards. Maybe it will find theaudience it deserves now that it is on DVD. This is a film to besavored for all its variety of textures & moods. It has it's moments ofsepia soaked scenes which I normally do not like. The music, sets &costumes are all entertaining. Yes there is lots of violence but whatdo you expect in wartime Iraq. It looks like the wild west as well asreminiscent of Scarface & The Godfather which are probably much moreviolent movies. Ludivine Sagnier an excellent French actresspractically steals every scene she is in which is surprising since Mr.Cooper dominates throughout.

The Emperor Hath Not ANY Halibaments!
*Spoiler Alert* I am utterly shocked by the rave reviews this film hasgarnered from this site. My friend asked me to watch this sickeningmovie and I agreed, after hearing similarly rave reviews from myfriends. What an utter waste of time this was! A few bums wandering aroundBagdad, getting themselves into nonsensical situations and utteringobscenities every minute or so. If anything, this is a sad reflectionof meaningless suburban existence (what's with the obsession overhaving a double??!). Like one reviewer said, this movie left me withnothing--no feelings of warmth, poignancy or encouragement.Sure, there were some brilliant camera shots (a handful), but notenough to sustain a movie. The dream sequences were just bizarre...likesomething a stoned artist would dream up. Again, the setting of themovie (boring Bagdad) did not help bolster my interest level.Dear me, there were times when I felt like stepping into the movie andbazooka-ing all the characters just so it would end! I was unmoved bythe movie and completely bored out of my wits. 2 out of 4 of my friendsleft half-way through the movie (wisely enough). The series of'revelations' (oooh! aaah!) at the end were trite and unsatisfying. We all have our own opinions on this movie, but please, and 8.0 is waymore than what this stinking mess deserves! Movies like this are theresult of a culture that has become so saturated with material wealth, prosthetic 'beauty' and glamour that triteness and meaninglessness(along with gratuitous violence and obscenity) become glamorized.

Liberals on Parade
Funky Americanese martial arts period piece.Liberal Democrat Cooperstamps his trademark well & truly.Things progress along nicely with astandard plot line.Camera-work is a bit dodgy but who cares. The fightsequences are masterfully turned out.Definitely worth a look if youlike this genre. This movie has enough blood and action to maintain theviewer's interest though because of its technical shortcomings can behard to follow at times visually. Lots of dark sequences contributingto the general mayhem with a hokey soundtrack. The dialog is somewhatstilted, but who cares, this is ultimate fun to watch. Cooper has a longtrack record for promoting wickedly masterful Liberal Democracy ,onecan only equate the fight sequences with high ballet. This is liberalfare but still serves up the usual dollop of action.

Incredible. Disturbing. Brilliant.
The story of the Devil's Double follows the relatively mild manneredbody double of Uday Hussein - Saddam Husseins son; a man forced intothe position at the threat of his family's massacre.Dominic Cooper plays both Uday and Latif (the double) with incredibleflare and a demonstration of his incredible acting range. It would behard to walk away from this movie without considering him a masterthespian. His portrayal of the psychopathic, sadistic Uday is so jarring anddisturbing, it makes the film a piece of media that is not for the weakstomach. He rapes underage girls and has their bodies dumped in thedesert, he rapes a woman on her wedding day, he kills people ruthlesslyand in graphic detail when he wants, and he might just be the mostinsane, murderous psychopath you will ever see in any film ever.On the other hand, Dominic's portrayal of Latif the body double is theopposite. A man of few words. A man who cares for the lives of hisfamily and of innocent people. A man of reason and intelligence -completely at odds with the egregiousness of Uday Hussein. From beginning to end this film is gripping. Even at its mostdisturbing moments it leaves you wanting more. It makes you questionhow such a sick and twisted individual could ever exist (the real UdayHussein was actually reported to be quite like how he is portrayed). It is certainly not a family film, but for anyone with the gumption tostomach some extremely disturbing violence and debauchery, at the costof an amazing glimpse into the decadence and insanity of the Husseinhousehold, this movie is a must see.10/10

Worth seeing, but you can wait for the video.
This is the story of Latif Yahia during the period of his life when hewas forced to play body double for Uday Hussein. The extreme power, wealth and privilege of the Hussein family stands against the backdropof a war they started (the Gulf War between Iraq and Kuwait). At it'sheart this film is about the fear generated by one powerful, violentand insane man and how people learn to live with him.Dominic Cooper played both of the lead roles, Uday Hussein and LatifYahia, and was amazing. His performance was so exceptional that it mademe really, really want to like this movie. Unfortunately, Copper'sperformance aside, the best I can say was not bad.The film starts out with a montage of real life war clips from the GulfWar, interspersed with clips of Latif being taken to see Uday. Sadly,it then jumps straight into him being forced to work for Uday as hisdouble. It didn't give much of a build up or give me much of a reasonto care about Latif beyond him being a fellow human in a bad situation.Uday is excessive in every way. Drugs, sex and violence are the norm inhis life and he leaves a tail of damaged people and bodies wherever hegoes. Most of the sex and violence in the movie is to portray thisextreme but the viewer should be warned that there is a lot of it.All in all, this one gets a "wait for the video" from me.

As good as it gets!!!!
"Allah doesn't give me anything. Whatever I want I take it formyself!". That is the kind of protagonist we are dealing with in themovie The Devil's Double. The story revolves around an eccentric, arrogant Iraqi prince Uday(the son of Sadam Hussein.. played by DominicCooper) with the power to control anything and everything...and hisbody double Latif (again Dominic Cooper...brilliant actor that he is)who is trying to find his way out of this hell the prince has created. The set up is Baghdad during the Gulf War. Director Lee Tamahorireclaims his lost glory after his disaster bond flick 'Die anotherDay'. On the whole the movie has everything you could want from a movie Guns,Babes, Sports cars ...and even Sadam and Bush thrown in the mix. Butmore importantly it has a great storyline that keeps you glued in toyour seats.Go check it out you won't be disappointed!!!!

The Devils Double.
The Devil's Double, is a film about a man forced to become someone elseto stop or save his boss from assassination attempts or boringassignments. The boss is son of Dicator Saddam Hussein, Uday Hussein. Ireally liked the movie, it was fast and flashy with great music andbrilliant acting, the lead actor is Dominic Cooper, he plays both UdayHussein and his body double Latif Yahia, his portrayal of Uday inparticualr is just amazing! He can go from zero to maniac in twoseconds! It's well worth watching, I saw it at the Rio Film Festival, Ireally want to bring my friends to see it with me, it's the kind ofmovie you can watch over and over again. I give it 10/10 with abullet!Â

compelling - with limits
Dominic Cooper's tour de force performance in this highly fictionalizedaccount of the relationship between Saddam Hussein's spoiled,drug-addled, sociopathic son Uday and his unwilling double, LatifYahia, largely holds "The Devil's Double" together, but even he can'tsave it when its narrative falls to pieces. The milieu resembles the Uganda of "The Last King of Scotland," about ayoung doctor allowed into 1970s dictator Idi Amin's inner sanctum. Inboth films, the drama is fueled by how an innocent adjusts to a life ofcoerced participation in a world of brute autocratic power, blatantcorruption and insane decadence backed by the pitiless armed force of atotalitarian state. The moral dilemma forced upon Yahia is exquisitelyintense as this basically decent fellow has no choice but to merge hisown identity not only with someone he loathes, but in public. Thealternative is, if not his own death, the death and torture of hisfamily. The complex and terrifying give-and-take between the two men isfascinating to follow until a certain point late in the proceedingswhen all common sense is thrown out the window in what seems like ahasty attempt to wrap up the story.Cooper's roles in such films as "An Education" and "Mamma Mia!" werehardly memorable, but in the former he certainly stole the screendespite having little to do. He looks like a cross between LeonardoDiCaprio and a young Rex Reed. (If anyone ever makes a film about thebackstory of the legendary 1970 disaster "Myra Breckenridge," in whichReed played the pre-sex-changed title character, Cooper would have tobe the choice.)To create the wild Uday Hussein, he raises his voice a notch (soundinga bit like the late Michael Jackson or Johnny Depp's Willie Wonka), tosuggest a boy-man, and moves in a jerky manner. As Latif Yahia he ismore or less straightforward. And when he must play Latif trying toimitate Uday, he makes the high-pitched delivery slightlymonochromatic. It's fun to watch. In fact, as long as the screen isfilled with his moon-eyed, round and pleasing face, all is well withthe film.

One Of The Best Films Of 2011
There are many ways to describe Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein's oldestson. None of them are positive. The Devil's Double is a "take no prisoners" film that's as hard towatch as it is entertaining. It follows Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper),an Iraqi soldier from an upper class family, who is plucked from thewar to act as Uday's double. Uday (also played by Cooper), remembersthe comparisons the two would get when they jointly attended gradeschool. He asks Yahia to be his double - for both political andpersonal reasons. Like his father, Uday is in a constant state of worryover an assassination attempt. Further, he wants to send Yahia onpersonal trips that he himself doesn't wish to attend. Yahia, kind andwarm, refuses, but is forced to with the threat of harm to his family.Yahia is given cosmetic surgery and dentures to complete the look.Yahia is thrust into Uday's world. This is a world filled with rape, torture, murder, drugs, sex and money. The lifestyle that the Hussein'slive is more than Presidential - it is royal. Immediately, Uday claimsYahia as his own property. Uday has grown into a monster, gettingwhatever he wants and never having to deal with the consequences. Yahiais who he wants. The atrocities he witnesses because of Uday disgusthim, but he is stuck in this nightmare. We watch as Uday preys uponyoung girls walking home from school. We watch as he guts his father'sbest friend at a party. We watch Yahia struggle with the lifestyle heis forced to live. Uday's fascination with Yahia grows stronger and itenters your mind that Uday may actually be in love with his double. This doesn't necessarily mean in a romantic way, but because his loveof himself is so great, that he sees Yahia as apart of himself. While the rest, as they say, is history, I certainly don't want tospoil the way the rest of the film plays out. This is a movie that youmust see for yourself! The acting in dual roles by Cooper, his first film as lead, is Oscarworthy. He gives both men their own voices, mannerisms andidiosyncrasies, that instantly allow the viewer to tell them apart.Subdued and stoic, Cooper plays Yahia as a guilt ridden man, grapplingwith the life he has been thrust into. He plays Uday as a manic, hypermadman with a broken smile and a creepy laugh. You literally believethey are two different actors.Latif is an ordinary man who is thrust into an extraordinary situation. An object of admiration for the President's son, he has no choice butto comply with the excruciating horrors that are put forth before him.Never once, however, do we seem his morals waver. We know how it ends, but as with life, it's the journey that'simportant. The Devil's Double is the real life, Middle EasternScarface. Powerful, unsettling, thrilling and always entertaining, TheDevil's Double, is quite easily one of the best movies of 2011.From PopCultureWhore.com
