Voyage of the Dawn Treader The Movie

First off, I have to say that the book version of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is my favorite book in the entire series. So if you mess with it, it tends to upset me a bit. I had been impressed with how well the first movie stayed in tune with the book that I was anxious for this one to come out, imagining all sorts of wonderful things for it. So after watching it, I was disappointed a bit. It was still a very nice movie (and probably more so for those who haven't read the books) but to me it was lacking in areas.Lucy and Edmund Pevensie are staying with their annoying cousin Eustace Scrubb and his family while the rest of their relatives are in America. While Eustace is berating them on something or other once again, they notice that a painting of a ship at sea on the wall starts moving. Before they know it, they are pulled into the painting and land sputtering in their sea while the great ship pulls up to them. It is none other than Prince Caspian (from previous adventures) and brings them aboard. You see, this is the land of Narnia, where Lucy and Edmund once ruled with their other siblings as Queen and King. They are happy to be there, but Eustace is decidedly not, especially since Reepicheep, the talking mouse, won't give him a moments break. They join Caspian on his voyage to rescue seven missing lords and also discover where an evil green mist comes from. Their journey will be perilous, but full of wonder as well.Characters:Georgie Henley-Lucy PevensieSkandar Keynes-Edmund PevensieWill Poulter-Eustace ScrubbBen Barnes-King CaspianSimon Pegg-ReepicheepLiam Neeson-Aslanand many othersI've always enjoyed the characters of Lucy and Edmund, and think they are played well in this film (and the others). Although really, Lucy kind of takes a back seat in this one, which is a shame, because I really like her. Poulter as Eustace did an excellent job. I really wanted to drown him like everyone in the movie did he was so annoying. Ben Barnes did an excellent job as Caspian as well. Reepicheep the mouse was interesting, although he does get tiring at times. Its a shame that with as much dedication that was shown to the characters, they couldn't have done the same for the original plot as well. Sure everything is remotely the same and there are some scenes straight out of the book, but they changed some things that should never have been changed, omitted others, and added new scenes that frankly weren't that great. I would have much preferred to see the actual book happenings as I consider them much more exciting. The antagonist of the Mist was way out there for me as well since this was a book that was more about adventure than strife and I think the movie could have pulled that notion off just fine. The visuals were pretty excellent in this movie along with the music. While there were some things from the book I would have loved to have seen brought to life, it was still a very pretty film and I did enjoy the parts that were shown. I think its wonderful how they generate the mythical creatures and talking animals in these films. They give it a lot of detail. Even the sunsets were well done in this movie. While I was very disappointed in all the changes from the book, I do recognize that those who haven't read it, but have watched the other movies, will probably enjoy this one. For me though, it spoiled it a good bit and all the pretty visuals couldn't make me love the movie. I merely thought it average because of these things.Review by M. Reynard 2011

Dreadful Packaging

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This review only concerns the packaging, just the same as the review of Mr. D. Thalheimer, and all the other victims of worthless packaging !!! !I could not agree more with them!Happened me just the same, fortunately the glue only damaged the DVDand not the Blu ray !The first thing I did was to put the Blu ray disc into a proper jewel case!WORST PACKAGING EVER FOR A BLU RAY DISC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

terrible

I am very disappointed,I love movies like lord of the rings, harrypotter, narnia and when I've heard that they are making this movie I wasso excited and eager to see it...!!!I was expecting this sequel alittle darker as it happened with Prince Caspian....but unfortunatelythis sequel is neither better nor darker than the previous films,it'sjust a flop. It's shame to be compared with Pirates of Caribbean...!Thisfilm is far too light and simple and there is no doubt that the absenceof Disney is obvious. The only good thing was the role of the irritatingcousin, this kid was indeed irritating...!It would be awesome when thiskid become older to act to the SAW as a victim...!!!Anyway if you needto choose from watching this film or jumping off a cliff....choose thecliff.

It definitely has its faults, but I still liked this sweet and thrilling adventure.

Well back to Narnia once again folks, and I must admit it has been awhile. I saw 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardbrobe' back in Christmas2005, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. I missed out on 'PrinceCaspian' in 2008, probably because I was busy watching 'The DarkKnight', and I think judging from the box office so was the rest of heworld. So how does 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' fare? Well it certainlyhas notable problems which I will delve into in a minute, but overall Ienjoyed this quick and upbeat fantasy adventure, which isn't at allgloomy and realistic like many films these days. What I love about the Narnia tales, is that they have very simpleplots, which only take about 5 minutes to explain. In this installmentEdmund Pevensie (Skandar Keynes) and his sister Lucy (the delightfulGeorgie Henley), are staying in Cambridge with their highly irritatingcousin Eustace Scrubb(a cinematic turn by Will Poulter). The two ofthem are fed up and miss Narnia, and it isn't long before a Narnia likepainting in their room suddenly comes alive and sucks them and Eustaceback into Narnia right next to the great ship - the Dawn Treader in themiddle of the sea. King Caspian (Ben Barnes)happens to be running theship, and immediately has his former friends on board. So literally tenminutes in the film we are already off on the journey of the DawnTreader, so to those you hate slow movies, you will love this one.The heroes and the annoying Eustace who no-one likes, go to many placesand encounter danger at every corner, as well as magic and mystery. It's a rip-roaring adventure that doesn't let up for a minute(literally!), and the special effects are impressive even if theyaren't the best in the world. The basic plot is, the heroes aresearching for the seven lords of Narnia who have mysteriouslydisappeared, and an evil island that produces evil green mist thatcorrupts the minds of the good, is lurking everywhere. So it's a great fantasy adventure that anyone can understand and enjoy,so what are its problems? Well the film is a bit too fast paced. Thereis hardly any build up to the return of Narnia, it's literally tenminutes in the film and we are already on board the Dawn Treader. 1hour and 50 minutes isn't really a suitable clocking time for a fantasyepic in my opinion, with the emotional farewell at the end feeling alittle hollow because I felt like I haven't been on a very long journeywith these characters. I also felt the adventures on the variousislands the crew visit throughout the film could have been expandedquite a bit.A few of the performances felt a little wooden, with Skandar Keynesbeing a bit of a letdown as Edmund, and a couple of the lines ofEustace felt that they should have been funny but ultimately weren't,but I blame the script not the actor who is actually pretty impressivefor most of the film. Eustace's change from unlikable little boy to ahero at the end is well done, and his budding friendship with thetalking mouse Reepicheep (voiced by Simon Pegg) was pretty sweet.Georgie Henley is once again a real charmer as Lucy, and Ben Barnes wassurprisingly good as Caspian. Fans of Aslan may be disappointed to knowthat he only pops up a couple of times, and the White Witch despite themisleading posters is only a vision of Edmunds'. There aren't many epicbattles like in the previous two films, but the film does climax with abattle with a giant sea serphent that was thrilling and spectacular. So all in all, this is a fun fantasy treat but not much more. It'squick pace and short length, plus with some wooden acting here andthere, left me feeling the film had potential to be much more.Nevertheless, if you're looking for a bit of escapism from the realworld then I urge you to see this romping adventure. Unlike many filmsthese days it is uplifting and lighthearted, and just gets on with it.Enjoy!

Good Film

I've seen the previous films and loved them, so I prayed I'd think thesame of this. It did far better than I expected, and will be lookingforward to the next movie to come. I think they embraced the addedcharacter Eustace well. I think he was the best character of them alland also the talking rat. I found Eustace funny, and entertained megreatly. I think they should a changed Eustace of the course of thefilm. I think it was clever the way they added in Susan and Peter, asthey could no longer go to Narnia anymore. I have never read any of theNarnia books by C.S Lewis, and like to wait to the movies, and I'm notmuch of a reader. I had fun watching it with my family, and was ratherdisappointed when it ended. - Narise

Good movie for the family

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Good effects, good characters, great story. If you liked the Lion/Witch/Wardrobe and Prince Caspian movies, you'll like this as well.Of all the books in the Narnia series, Dawn Treader was my favorite, so I ended up liking this one better than the two before it.

Tedious and unsatisfactory

Due to the fact that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the DawnTreader was the only release in cinemas this week in my country, Idecided to go to see it despite not having any interest in it, havinghated the first film from the saga and having never seen the secondone, subtitled Prince Caspian. And even though I did not end up hatingThe Voyage of the Dawn Treader as much as the first film, I still foundit to be a tedious and unsatisfactory movie.I read the first book from the saga from which this movies are based on(The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) during my adolescence, when Iwas too old to get interested in the story from that book. But beyondof that, I think author C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the firstpromoters of the horrible ideology "it does not care if it makes senseas long as it is for the children". In other words, the book The Lion,The Witch and the Wardrobe is full of arbitrary events, unjustifiedsurprises and characters who come and go without any other motive thanrescuing Lewis for some problem he could not (or did not want) tologically solve. So, for better or for worse, the films The Lion, theWitch and the Wardrobe and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader decided tokeep the same focus, something which might be appreciated by the fansof the books...but not by me.The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has many action scenes and practicallyconstant special effects; those two things try to convince us thatsomething important and special is happening on the movie, when in factthey are used in order to disguise the fact that they are simplemoments of a doubtful relevance and not too much connection with therest of the scenes. On the positive side, the special effects are welldone, and I liked Simon Pegg's voice acting as Reepicheep. There were moments from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in which I wasgenuinely about to fall asleep (yes, even during some action scenes). So, I cannot recommend it based on my personal experience, even thoughI perfectly understand the attraction it can provoke on little childrenor on the fans of the books.

Enjoyable Family Fantasy Adventure movie. better then the second but not close to the first.

Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustacewhere they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboardthe royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarvf camps, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge ofthe world.the third movie in the series again returns to the Children fantasyadventure movie type as the second movie was a lot darker and maturelook with an epic feel which i didn't like that much. this one is notmuch better then the first one. i have mixed feelings about this movie.its not what i expected from this one but still. its very plainlysimple movie which follows a very simple and extremely digestible plot.its for kids definitely. it lacks any epic battle scenes. its entirelydifferent from the previous two movies.the older siblings are not in the movie, they just appear in a tiny bitscene towards the middle of the movie, i missed them, lol. Ben Barneswho plays Prince Caspian looks good in his character but its not thesame fighting Prince we saw. Georgie Henley looks very good in hercharacter too as Lucy, i so love her in it. and also Skandar Keynes asEdmond, they both carry this movie on there somewhat going to be matureshoulders though they are still young but they looks good. there is anew character shown, Eustace, who is there cousin and joins them in thejourney played by Will Poulter and he is very hilarious i mean he playsvery well, he is very funny as he gets shocked in this new world.adorable character. other supporting characters are decent.on thing i would talk about is the unnecessary use of the modernfashion thing 3D, yes, its useless in this movie as it is an epic likefantasy adventure which is based on a book series. Harry Potter andthis one, i mean they don't need the 3D technology, they should notjoin the race. they should stay as they are. don't waste your money in3D theaters watch it in simple screens.i won't say its one of the very best movies this year or ever or of theseries but its above average and enjoyable. its Directed decently, notvery good. screenplay is decent, with minor flaws. but the good thingis that this movie is never boring at all. special effects are good.Dragons, Dwarfs, Magical kingdoms and places, Talking animals, and manyother things. Cinematography is good. Editing is somewhat below averagethough.its enjoyable visual treat, watch it with not so big expectations andyou will like it.

Certainly not a disaster, but its definitely not memorable like the first two films.

"The Dawn Treader" was never a favorite of mine of the Chronicles ofNarnia series, but it wasn't bad either. I did not know what to expectwhen stepping into the theater. The first two films by Andrew Adamsonwere very well done (even though Prince Caspian deviated very far fromthe book). Like with the C.S. Lewis book, the movie is good but not incomparison to the earlier installments. The movie has nearly everything going for it: lots of swashbucklingaction, exotic locations, almost every fantasy creature imaginable, anda decent cast. Will Poulter was an excellent choice for Edmund andLucy's cousin Eustace. He was an annoying, selfish, brat in the book—and he takes it to the extreme in the film. Towards the end though, theviewer comes to like him. The actors in the previous films seem to meldinto their roles perfectly, especially Ben Barnes as Caspian, who seemsto have dropped his thick Spanish accent from the first film. Thiscertainly helps performance, allowing him to deliver his lines morefluently. The one cast change that was somewhat disappointing was SimonPegg as the replacement voice for Reepicheep. He does a decent job, buthis voice doesn't fit the character as well as Eddie Izzard in theearlier installment "Prince Caspian." The technical aspects somehow seemed to have been improved. The setdesigns and cinematography is bright and colorful, no doubt intended todraw children, and the CGI is flawless. The story, however, lacks. There's a big showdown with a sea serpent, yet it does not developitself as a main antagonist. The White Witch once again is present, butall she does is taunt a certain character in his visions—she has noother purpose. The White Witch seems to be thrown in at the lastmoment. If she had come back from the dead as badass villain like in"The Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe", that would be a surprise—but no, thereare no such twists. The movie also seemed to drag, which is unusual for a "Chronicles ofNarnia" feature. It also did not feel the same. David Arnold replacedHarry Gregson—Williams as the composer, which was a bad idea. There's acertain magic he created in the first two films that was not present inthis film. Michael Apted also replaced Andrew Adamson as director. Hewasn't a bad choice, but Adamson's work from the first two films provedsuperior—at least in the fantasy genre. Also, the actors who play thetwo eldest children have mere cameos in the movie (as it was in thebook). This is not necessarily bad, but without them in the film, itseems to be another hole. I've been so used to seeing the 4 siblingstogether that them not being together feels awkward. What would Abbotand Costello be without Costello? Just Abbot. That's exactly how it isin this film—there are things that lack. "The Dawn Treader" is certainly not a disaster, but it's definitely notmemorable like the first two films. My rating: 3/4

3D was a waste

The story was ok, but the 3D effect was almost completely absent. It was one of my first 3D purchases so I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be seeing. Since, I've purchased Resident Evil Afterlife (which was an amazing 3D movie), Open Season, and Legend of the Guardians. All three of those will show you what 3D should look like. Narnia is a total ripoff if you're purchasing this edition for the 3D effects.

Great Movie, Great Product

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) The movie was great and so was everything else with this purchase. The one thing I didn't care for was that the placement of the discs. I easily switched the locations of the digital copy and blu-ray and was content. As expensive as movies can be these days, I like to make sure that they are safe from moving around and scratching. If you are a Narnia fan, you will enjoy this product!

The Best Narnia Yet!

This review is from: The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (Single-Disc Edition) (DVD) The DVD arrived timely and plays perfectly. And for the first time, I got to watch all of the first three Chronicles of Narnia back-to-back. Both, in terms of imagery and messages, Voyage of the Dawn Treader is definitely my favorite! I'm praying that, esoecially with the "unveiling" of The Narnia Code, the rest of the Narnia Chronicles will be hitting the screen ASAP!

Magical

All of my favorite movies have been films that grow better with each viewing. Voyage of the dawn treader is on the right track, I've seen it twice and the second time was much better than the first. Can't wait till the DVD comes out so I can continue to enjoy the details, artistry, and magical story.

Lead Us Not Into Temptation

So there I was, sitting in my seat at the theater awaiting the start of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," the third film in the series. As I tore open the plastic bag containing a set of 3D glasses, I came to a worrying realization: Although I remembered greatly enjoying the previous "Narnia" film, "Prince Caspian," I had by now forgotten just about everything concerning the plot and the characters. Would that mean I would be lost watching this new film? Fantasies are a great cinematic distraction, but if they're part of an epic series released over several years, keeping track of key events can be next to impossible. To my surprise and relief, the film makes the occasional reference to previous events but doesn't dwell upon them. In other words, I was allowed to forget the previous films, sit back, and immerse myself in nearly two hours of pure entertainment.Adapted from the novel by C.S. Lewis, "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" begins with a painting that gushes water into a bedroom and ends with a battle between a ship and a sea serpent; in between, we encounter fairy tale creatures, witness acts of magic, and follow the leads on a quest to save Narnia - and themselves - from slave trading and the forces of darkness. I guess what I'm saying is that this movie is a fun, exciting, great-looking fantasy adventure that adults and children will enjoy. That it has joined the 3D bandwagon is really of no concern to me, since the process is now about as commonplace as drive-in theaters were fifty years ago. See it in that format if that's what you prefer. I personally think everyone would be much better off saving themselves a couple of bucks and sticking to traditional 2D.At the beginning of the film, we find the youngest Pevensie siblings, Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley), spending the summer holiday with their uncle and insufferable cousin, Eustace Scrubb (Will Poulter), who does nothing but complain, complain, complain. Their older siblings, Susan and Peter (cameos by Anna Popplewell and William Moseley), have matured enough to start living their own lives; Susan in particular has joined her parents on a trip to America. Thanks to a painting of a ship at sea, Edmund, Lucy, and cousin Eustace are transported back to Narnia where they board the "Dawn Treader" and reunite with King Caspian (Ben Barnes, who seems to have forgotten the Spanish accent he used in the previous film) and the swashbuckling talking mouse Reepicheep (voiced by Simon Pegg).Caspian's mission is to seek out the Seven Lost Lords of Narnia. The Pevensies are happy to tag along, but Eustace is not; he's far too rational and proper to believe that a magical world could ever exist. As he continues to make life difficult for everyone, the "Dawn Treader" sails from one island to the next claiming the swords of the Lost Lords with the intent of gathering them at the table of the great lion Lord Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson). Our intrepid leads will engage in a number of harrowing adventures, including encounters with a band of slave traders, one-legged troll creatures, a pond that turns ordinary objects into gold, an evil green mist, and a dark island that can bring to life one's darkest fears. Caspian and the Pevensies will have to resist temptation numerous times along the way; Lucy must not wish herself as beautiful as her sister, Edmund must not hunger for more power, and Caspian must not think he was a disappointment to his father.Since the Pevensies have been well established, let's focus on Eustace. Say the word "Eustace" - does it not sound an awful lot like "useless"? At the start, he's exactly that. But then he goes through ... a transformation, and by the end of the film, he proves himself more useful than most of the other characters combined. He initially has a contentious relationship with Reepicheep, who continuously taunts him for his profound lack of adventure and skill. In due time, they will become friends, which is just about right for this kind of film. As for Poulter's performance, he has the whiny, stuck up, snot-nosed twit stereotype down to a tee. There's an unfortunate tendency for fantasy epics - especially ones adapted from books - to be so overloaded with material that they alienate general audiences and appeal only to those intimately familiar with their sources. What I've been enjoying about the "Narnia" films is that, while all connected by recurring characters and themes, each chapter is generally self contained. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" could have easily existed within a closed universe, defined by a plot that only an elite few would understand or care about. Fortunately, director Michael Apted and writers Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, and Michael Petroni had all audiences in mind. This includes people like me, people who like a film at the moment it's being watched but don't necessarily retain any information about them.

Great!

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Two-Disc Edition) (DVD) This is a great movie. I also liked the book. Though there are a few differences between the movie and the book, I liked it; the director just added a few parts to make the movie a twist.
