Fun Flick Without Pretense.
I saw this film in the theaters and enjoyed it enough to write thisreview (which is my first on IMDb). Crass humor, sappy storyline, nothing exceptional to say the least . . . But, I loved it! If thehumor wasn't so rude and the characters not so insensitive and shallow,I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this movie as much as I did. Half thefun was in watching these fellas on screen saying and doing stuff wewouldn't dream of doing in real life for fear of offending others ormaking fools of ourselves. Some scenes would have me squirming inawkward jaw-dropped discomfort while inwardly savoring the moment witha vicarious thrill. The lead actors, Jason Bateman & Ryan Reynolds, are also what made thisfilm work as well as it did. They both brought their own particularbrand of funny to the table and played off of each other quite well(Bateman reminded me slightly of his Michael Bluth character inArrested Development, mildly stuffy, uppity and wound up tight; whileReynolds' character was vaguely dry, arrogant and tactlesslyself-involved) I really enjoyed watching our lead protagonists switchroles and play as each other with believably unaffected skill. While not of great substance or profound moral quality (Who cares! That's not why I'm watching a feel-good Saturday-night comedy anyway),the characters and the movie as a whole really endears itself to theaudience. I walked away from the film with a smile (possibly smirk) onmy face and a little lightness to my step. It's kind of like FreakyFriday with a mid-life crisis and we learn that yeah, the grass isalways greener and even 30-something jerks can be lovably perfect justthe way they are.

Worst Movie of the Year
First of all, I have to get this out of the way. Who the HELL pees in apublic fountain? No one. And when in the HELL does that make you switchbodies with the person that's also peeing in the same fountain? Never. The very cause and base of the movie is nonsensical and uncreative. This movie is the lowest of low-brow, every other scene someone getsnaked (and don't waste your time, you don't actually see someonenaked). In the TV trailer, someone said "Fully worth of its R-Rating."Since when does being rated "R," automatically make your movie funny? It's nothing but sex jokes and toilet humor. It's nowhere near worththe money to go see it.

An amazingly hilarious R rated comedy that men and women will love. Havent laughed this hard in a long time. Must see. I say A
"Growing up we both had dreams. Dave wanted to be an astronaut, Iwanted to sell dolphins on the black market. But found thats hard todo. We live in Atlanta... dolphins are hard to find..." When singleMitch (Reynolds) and married with children Dave (Bateman) go out theybegin talking about each others lives. Both feel like the other one hasa better life, then they take a pee. When they wake up the fun begins.Going in I was hoping for a few laughs, mainly because I think the twoactors are hilarious. The first half hour was hard to watch, because Iwas laughing so hard my side hurt and I was crying. Not since "WeddingCrashers" was I blown away by the comedy that I was not expecting. Bythat I mean not only the extreme shocking moments, but the timingbetween the two and the dialog was so funny that I haven't had thismuch fun watching a movie in a long time. The only bad thing I have tosay about this movie is that it started off on a full run but turned alittle more sappy at the end. On the flip side, that part balanced outthe rest of it just enough to give your cheeks and side a break. Thisis a definite R rated comedy that men and women will both love. That ishard to do. I loved it a lot. Overall, next to "Hall Pass" the funniestmovie I have seen since "Wedding Crashers". This movie will notdisappoint. I give it an A.Would I watch again? - Absolutely. I want to buy this.*Also try - Hall Pass & Wedding Crashers

All Shock Value and No Substance, Some Laughs
THE CHANGE-UP, directed by David Dobkin, does something so few moviesI've seen ever do. It actually gets worse each time I watch it. I guessthat sounds harsh, but it's true. Each time I watch the movie, I have aharder time figuring out what I thought was so funny the first time. IfI'd rated it after my first viewing, I guarantee it would've beenhigher. The movie is essentially an R-rated version of a movie we'veseen a hundred times before: an identity swap. Jason Bateman is thestraight man, a married lawyer with three kids who's on the verge ofmaking partner at his firm. Ryan Reynolds is the slacker, a stoned outwannabe actor who makes a living with the occasional commercial or"lorno" (cable-level softcore porn). Each of them has something to envyin regards to the other man's life: Mitch (Reynolds) yearns for hisfriend's success, while Dave (Bateman) wants his friend's totalfreedom. One night, after having a few beers, the two wander across astatue in the park and stop for a quick leak. The two unanimously wishthey had the other man's life and BAM, the next morning they've swappedbodies. You know how it goes from here: Mitch has to try and not messup Dave's marriage and potential promotion, while Dave struggles withhis desire to sleep around and whether or not it still constitutes ascheating on his wife if it's not his body. Minor laughs ensue. When the very first scene in the movie has a baby crapping in JasonBateman's mouth, it pretty much sets the standard for the next twohours. The rest of the movie relies on toilet humor, nudity (whichisn't always a bad thing, though the ladies here are alldigitally-enhanced), and plot turns you can see coming a mile away. Theproblem with doing yet another rendition of the body-swapping storywe've seen a hundred times before is that we've seen it a hundred timesbefore. We know what's going to happen. Each of them will be throwninto drastically different situations than they're accustomed to,they'll struggle, and eventually they'll learn something importantabout their own lives. The end, roll credits. What matters in thesesort of movies is the filler in between the predictable plot points, and the sad fact of the matter is there really isn't anything more herethan shock value laughs. The lorno shoot, Mitch juggling the babiesprecariously in the kitchen in the midnight feeding scene, LeslieMann's thai food surprise, etc. There aren't a whole lot of jokes, justa bunch of stuff that's shockingly amusing. Unfortunately, we becomedesensitized after a while and they become less and less amusing. Justbecause a movie is R-rated doesn't mean the humor needs to rely on fartjokes and the occasional nipple.I really wanted this movie to be funny. An R-rated spin on what'sprimarily been a PG-rated theme was a cool plan, and the cast assembledfor the movie should've been just what it needed. Jason Bateman'salways hilarious and Ryan Reynolds has the potential to be great in amovie (as long as it's a comedy and he's not wearing green CGIspandex). Leslie Mann is tried and true, and Olivia Wilde is gorgeousand I was curious to see how she'd do at comedy after enjoying her workon TV's "House" for so long. But in the end, none of it came togetherlike it was supposed to. The movie ended up being a forgettable flopthat will fall off of the cast's resumes soon enough, I'm sure. If youtruly want to get the most of this movie, watch it only once. The lesssober, the better. That ought to leave you with pleasant enoughmemories of the movie that a second viewing would probably only ruin. Its flaws start to come forward once the shock value has worn off. Themiddle section of the film is way too long and the two friends spendway too much time in each other's bodies. If the filmmakers had managedto cut the movie about a half hour shorter, streamlined the whole thingand jacked up the pace a little, it would've probably been a majorimprovement. Oh, and one final note, they really should've changed thetitle. I can't express how much I don't like the title of the film. Ittruly sounds like they'd run out of ideas for "body-swap" movie titlesand cobbled this one together at the last minute.

My Nomination for Worst Movie of the Year
Two irresponsible yuppies get plastered one evening in a bar. Whiletaking a lengthy urination into a public fountain, the cement goddessof the fountain decides to change their brains and bodies. My first impression of this movie was that the acting was patheticallypoor. After watching further it occurred to me that the storyline is soabsurd that no actor could possibly get a grip on it. The movieattempts make up for the stupid acting and storyline with massivepornography and foul language. I am no prude. I enjoy some good raunchyhumor as much as anyone, but after about 45 minutes of this movie I wasgrossed out. I think the final straw was when Ryan repeatedly dropped Fbombs on the cute little 6 year old girl in the car. My standards ofdecency may be pretty loose, but this was too much for me. I veryrarely fail to finish a movie, but I flushed this piece of excrement, and saved 30 minutes of torture. I found very little humor in thismovie.I can't imagine what kind of parents would allow their child to besubjected to such filth in making a movie. People are arrested forhaving pornographic conversations on the internet with underagechildren, but here it is on public display. This movie is a despicable waste of time. I am astonished that thereare favorable reviews on it (or that it was ever produced in the firstplace).

Some genuine laughs but OVERDONE
Sooooo let me start with something positive. They say that's how you'resupposed to give feedback. .... .... .... Ah yes, the acting was smartand it worked. And there are some GENUINE laughs in this movie. Off ofa few mildly sophisticated jokes. But (there's the but) 90% of thelaughs are gags, over the top, predictable, sexual innuendo, etc etc.The type of stuff a middle schooler would giggle at. There's PUH-LENTYof T&A (mostly T) and way too many F-bombs (I'm talking' like every fewsentences for Ryan Reynolds' character). Did I mention the racialslurs, a couple stabs at the "retarded" (which has also become a fauxpas now), and the abundance of poop? Matter fact, the first threeminutes of this movie satisfy any desire I may have for a poop jokeever again in my life. Yep. It was basically a super R-rated (thoughNOT rated yet), overdone, gratuitous Freak Friday. I guess they felt itwas necessary, considering we've seen this premise done many timesover. Bleh.I DID laugh. I did. Like I said, there were genuine laughs (though waymore gasps). I can definitely see how this is from the same creators asThe Hangover. It's for a Hangover crowd. So if you're in the mood for asimple, raunchy-ish comedy (a la The Hangover), you'll be pleased. Ifnot, skip this and go see Crazy, Stupid Love or even 30 Minutes OrLess. No really.

The Change-Up is crude, vulgar and absolutely hilarious!
Without even seeing it, some people have bashed this film because ofit's unoriginal concept. That's true. It has been done before. You canthink of it as Freaky Friday... except with dudes and really amped up!From the first few minutes the movie was crude and vulgar... andabsolutely hilarious! But what else is to be expected when two megaforces in comedy come together? David Dobkin, the director of WeddingCrashers, and Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the writers of The Hangover...just an awesome combination that really paid off on screen! Of course,I can't forget to mention the incredibly funny cast that worked so welltogether: Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde...even Alan Arkin is in there! The writing is funny, but the comedictiming and performances were just so perfect and what truly made thefilm hilarious! The story focuses on two childhood pals, Mitch(Reynolds), who dropped out of high school to become an actor and isjust a promiscuous mess, and Dave (Bateman), who has worked hard allhis life to be a successful lawyer, has a wonderful family and is closeto making partner at his firm. One night, though, while going out andcatching up after being vacant from one another's lives for a brieftime, they get to talking about their lives and drunkenly wish theycould take a walk in the other's shoes, but be careful what you wishfor when you are pissing in a magic fountain... The next morning thetwo awake to discover that they have switched bodies. And, although, after freaking out they begin to explore this new freedom, they soonlearn that the escape from their normal lives isn't as glorious as theyhad imagined and begin looking for a way to return to their rightfulbodies.Despite being wildly hilarious, the film also weaves in some verysubtle moments that back up the comedy with a great heart. I recentlysaw that the general view of the critics is "Skip it!" which was enoughto tell you how good the film actually is, but having, now, seen itmyself... I say you'd be crazy to miss out on it. True, it won't beeveryone's cup of tea, but for someone like me who loves a good R-ratedcomedy, it's definitely worth going to. In a way, it plays out in theway that made Knocked Up and Wedding Crashers work so well: theoutrageous and often crude comedic material overpowers to make a greatcomedy, but it also has those great tender moments that balance out thefilm and really carry the story.

Like someone has turned The Hangover(s) into a romantic comedy
I'm writing my review for the first time here only because I can readhow those that actually reviewed this movie didn't see the point; Youwere warned - Wedding crashers director + Hangover writers = over 100minutes of pure R rated fun!I must say I went to see this movie without knowing anything but thatline ^^ and for the first time in my life I sat in the front row (yes, the 1st row) and I wasn't sorry I did.The movie is another body changing movie, yes, but I didn't watchFreaky Friday cause I find it to be amusing for younger audience.Seeing Hangover and having a great time made me see this movie also, and liking it. Still, this movie has a vulgar way of making you laughand at the same time cheer for the main characters as they are changingtheir life to better. Acting is way better than expected, all the jokes are understood andyes, again, they are vulgar but somewhat surprising. If you liked Hangover(s) GO SEE THIS MOVIE, especially in the movietheatre cause there is nothing better than when you can laugh out alongwith the rest of the (younger) crowd.

i like here
You'd think that would be a frightening harbinger of what's to comeover the next two hours, but it's not - which makes it even morefrustrating when you realize that it didn't need to startle us off thetop in such crass and obvious fashion. There was potential here. Whenyou've got Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman - two masters of deadpanimprovisational comedy - bouncing off each other, you shouldtheoretically just be able to let the cameras roll and follow themwherever they take you. With a screenplay from Jon Lucas and ScottMoore, who wrote "The Hangover" - the clever, original "Hangover," thatis, and not the lazy sequel - you should already be in pretty goodshape. But the overlong film from David Dobkin (who also directed"Wedding Crashers" and, unfortunately, "Fred Claus") is all over theplace in tone, veering awkwardly from some daring comic moments tofeel-good sappiness and back again in hopes of redeeming some semblanceof edginess. It's as if "The Change-Up" is trying to say, "Justkidding! We didn't mean to be so sappy and square. Well, maybe we did, just a little. Whatever you guys like best." Learning lessons is whatbody-swapping movies are all about. The grass is always greener on theother side until you have to mow it, or something. Here, Bateman playsDave Lockwood, a wealthy, successful Atlanta lawyer. He's happilymarried to Jamie (Leslie Mann), with whom he has a sweet, 5-year-olddaughter and a couple of adorable, 2-year-old twins. But he missesspontaneity and fun. His childhood best friend, Reynolds' defiantlysingle Mitch Planko, spends his days doing bong hits in his man cave.Sometimes, he goes out on auditions for commercials. At night, he bedsas many random women as possible. But he longs to have someone to comehome to, to feel loved and secure.

Theres 112 minutes Ill never get back..
It is obvious after the first five minutes that this movie willdisappoint you. I am astonished it even has a 6.2 as of now. In myopinion it should have a 5 and that is being generous. I hatedeverything about this movie. I didn't believe one word of this movie. It is becoming clear Ryan Reynold should stick to what he's "good" at.He is a box office failure this summer. The only thing he seems to besuccessful at is mediocre rom coms. Jason Bateman has been making somebad career moves as well these last few years. From The Switch..toHorrible Bosses(which was not as bad as this movie but still adisappointment) and now he can add the change up to his decliningfilmography. The only redeeming quality this movie has is the gracefulLeslie Mann. She is great here at the emotional scenes like in FunnyPeople, but you can tell the whole times she knows she can do betterthan this. I can honestly say I did not laugh the entire movie. It is anon deserved R rated version of Freaky Friday. In fact, I am confidentin saying that I enjoyed the Lindsay Lohan/Jamie Lee Curtis FreakyFriday movie much more than this.

child defecates in stars mouth!!!
Well, the exclamation marks were mostly to build the mood in an effortto keep you awake, just like in the movie. Really, said scene takesplace about 1 minute into the movie, and is just overthetop and tediousat the same time. That rings pretty true to 'humourous' tone and levelof the rest of the flick. If said scene manages to bring an appreciative grimace to your face, for the amazing grossness of it, or because you find it original ortrue to what parenthood is all about, or whatever, my guess is you willappreciate this movie as a whole, too.If not, well... Time to do something else I guess. At least, don't sayI didn't warn you. The 4 stars are for decent cinematography and theactors making a fair effort. Not their fault this movie is a waste of time.

Not as bad as its made out to be.
The Change-Up was a lot better than it's made out to be. Some reallyhilarious scenes but also a lot of poop jokes that are lowbrow even forit. The entire concept is way too dated and would feel out of place insome ABC sitcom, let alone a full feature, but it's kind of worthwatching just to see Jason Bateman play so against type. He's reallyvulgar and raunchy and it's just a lot of fun to watch him let looseinstead of playing the straight man like always. So a pretty awfulconcept and some bad jokes (the first twenty minutes I kept thinking,"Oh god, this is going to suck.") eventually make way for some solidlaughs and a nice, unique performance from one of my favorite comedicactors.

An entertaining comedy
This film is about a successful lawyer and a hedonistic playboyswitching lives, after claiming that they admired each others' lives."The Change-Up" is an entertaining comedy. It is gross, borders onoffensive but is so funny. Both Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds are sobelievable in their original roles and their switched roles. Both ofthe actors are well cast, because their faces do match theirpersonalities before the switch.Underneath the non-serious entertainment, the film does make me wonderwhat it feels like to be another person. How we think it must be sogreat to be another person. This film could be the wake up call thatthe grass may not be greener on the other side.

Should have known better..
Nothing new under the sun. This movie made me yawn more than twice. Wemeet two friends that accidentally switches body, one stupid looser andone less stupid (lawyer). Being 'switched' they decide to stand in foreach other, and does one stupid thing after another - I mean can anyonerelate to the looser? The looser somehow pulls himself together and bythe end of day two(?) seams to have grasped everything about the bigbusiness merger/takeover that his friend had been working for in monthsand becomes the hero. Someone wrote that this is adult humor? Adult?Humor? Stupid, stupid film. Had it been made some 30 years ago, I'd bemore forgiving, but today? The score of two goes to the fact that the actors are good looking, anddoes what they can with the awfully boring script.

Waste of 10
Wow I really don't know how people found this funny. Don't get mewrong, I like stupid humor as much as the next person (Zombieland,Superbad, and The Benchwarmers are all favorites of mine) but this wasjust disgusting and really not funny at all. First off, I don't want tosee a baby's asshole especially when there's sh*t flying from it.Gross. Second, I wouldn't have minded the nudity AS much except for thefact that not once, that's right not even ONCE, did Ryan Reynoldsappear shirtless in this movie. I mean of course it's only the womenthat get naked in front of the camera, that's what makes a successfulmovie today I guess. And I know I'm going to sound like a prude when Isay this, but when Mich makes a comment about the baby looking "downsy"and "retarded" I thought it was a little over the top. I really didn'teven see how it was funny. Anyways if you really want to see this, justwait until it comes out because it's a big waste of $10 in my opinion.Oh and when the porn scene comes up just remember that I warned youabout this movie...
07 May 2012
Defiantly not a clich and unique for its style
This movie certainly is the full works, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman,Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde. All did phenomenon on their characters;being funny, loving, touching the crowds hearts, amusing them in everyway possible. Many movies had the same same idea, 2 people switchingbodies and they go through each others daily tasks and life. We havethe same idea here but much more on detail on the daily life part, thatis because it's not just daily life we are shown here we also see lifeturning or changing events a normal person must go through as well. What was also great about this movie was not just the amount of detailsshown on the daily life part but also how Ryan Reynolds did greatplaying Jason Bateman's character and Bateman doing the very same forReynolds' character, the writer really did write the story and scriptfor this indeed carefully. This is my favorite comedy of this year forsure. Usually when you enter a great movie, you feel like it passed bysoo fast but this actually feels like a long 2 hours movie, which isenjoyable.

Possibly one of the worst films i have seen in 2011
A film that includes a baby projectile pooing on a mans face twice inthe first 30 seconds should have warned me the quality of this film. Its offensive, rude and left me feeling uncomfortable and uneasy. Thereferences to "Why are your boobs out - we're not in Africa" i foundgrossly offensive.Jason Bateman should have rejected this film....The jokes are crass and i was very surprised that this film is gettinga cinema release in Australia rather than a direct to DVD release. Ihighly do not recommend, and would wait until its released on a crappyTV station...

Story seen before? Not like this!
I wasn't sure whether to watch this movie or not. It seemed medium goodand you might think this is some "all been seen before" movie. But fromwhat I can say it's definitely not. Only the main story is about thewhole change up thing as in similar movies like "Freaky Friday". Mostof these movies are about a mother and a daughter though. This one isabout 2 good friends who have known each other for a long time but areyet completely different. One is the family guy, 3 kids, a wife, ahouse, a job as a lawyer. He got everything he ever could dream of. Theother guy is nothing like this. No girlfriend, just affairs, a singleapartment, he's still kind of a boy inside. When they get changed-upit's a total chaos! How should a single guy know how to take care of awhole family with 2 little babies? How is he supposed to know how to bea lawyer? Really funny moments there. The other one doesn't knowanything about being single. Even though they both wanted this lifethey see how much it sucks for them. They step from one mistake toanother and can't manage to do anything right at the beginning. Andthey also find out things about each other they never knew and thingsabout themselves. All this in a really funny way. Only thing I didn't like was that the movie seemed to be endless. Ifelt like I spent 4 hours watching it cause some scenes might have beena little long. I wouldn't take out anything for the story nor thelaughs though, so just -1 point for this.

Clich clich clich
We've all seen it. Hollywood frequently come back to the paradigm ofchanging bodies(or places). Background changed up a little bit in Thechange up but its still a cliché. Humour is very low and first fewseconds of the movie explains it very vividly but if you ll manage tolook pass it ll get better. I personally liked scenes with Olivia Wildshe has really strong screen presence (or maybe its just because she sodamn HOT). Anyway there will be few laughs and few WTF. Although filmis predictable and starts off awfully I must say its one of few that Iliked among 'OMG we changed our bodies' clichés.The story is about 2best friends Dave Lockwood(Jason Bateman) and MitchPlanko (Ryan Reynolds) which after drunken night change up theirbodies. That of course lead to awkward situations, gags andrediscovering your own I. Dave is a lawyer with 3 kids and lovingwife.Mitch is completely different person without career, living like amen-child and chasing skirt all the time (he also had daddy issues).Jason Bateman as an actor (and probably as a person) completely lackscharisma so he s tailor made for role of Dave. (btw he always play thesame guy). The thing is that after the "change" it just doesn't workany more. As douche he cant convey anything beside few facialexpressions. Same goes for Reynolds although he doesn't act he justlooks pretty. But who da hell cares about acting while watching lightand for most parts brain-dead comedy.I recommend it to all those who have not much experience with cinema. If want to have some fun and leave cinema rather with a smile thenwithout this is for you. For the rest of us it will work only whenwe're sad at the moment with out anything better to do. Oh and whatsimportant we get to see Olivia almost naked +1 for da movie thanks toher :P

Very well done
The premise of 'The Change-Up' is by no means a new one. What separates'The Change-Up' from other body swap films is the harsh language, nudity and outrageous raunchiness. Jason Bateman is fantastic, and theease with which he transforms from mild-mannered Dave to free-spiritedMitch, was funny to see. I hope to see more of the extremely talentedBateman, as his star climbs and he continues to make quality comediessuch as 'Horrible Bosses', 'The Switch' and 'Couples Retreat'. The samecan be said for Ryan Reynolds, who's comedic past includes such gems as'Just Friends', 'Waiting' and 'Van Wilder'. Reynolds' transition intothe committed Dave is equally funny. Mitch's Dave has no parentingskills and watching his interactions with his children left me intears, as did his exchanges with Leslie Mann, who radiates as Jaime, aworking mother and wonderful wife. Olivia Wilde, who looks hot, showedcomedic range and that she's more than just a pretty face. The copy wewere shown was announced as an "unfinished print" of the movie, andaside from some scenes with the babies that I felt could have been donebetter; and excessive language that seemed unnecessary, the movie feltlike it worked the way it was intended. My wife and myself, along withthe capacity filled theater, laughed hysterically throughout the film.As a film-goer, that's all the satisfaction you need when you see acomedy.Summer movie Grade: B (my wife gives it an A-) Age appropriate meter: 18+visit our website at www.twodudereview.com
