Relentlessly Crude But Funny At Times

This movie seemed to be diving towards the bottom of taste pool at fullspeed. But sometimes being relentlessly crude and plain silly/dumb, onan A list level movie, is admirable. Also, since the humor usually iscrude and childish, is it a crime to go too far? This movie pulls outall the stops in crude language, cheap sexual references, childishadult behavior, Three Stooge's type violence and all around cruelty. Itcan be outrageously funny but it is mainly a man-boy movie. I thinkmost women and sensitive, moral, sophisticated or artistic types wouldbe turned off by it. Not only do we have the crudeness duel betweenstep brothers Reilly and Ferrell, but Ferrel's upscale stage brother,his business colleagues and his family are all vying for the brass ringof crudeness too. Trouble is that such a juvenile movie is so crudethat it got an "R" rating. If they cleaned it up a bit they could havegotten a "PG" rating and opened it up to a larger audience of childrenwhose emotional maturity would be a match to this movie's. Since Iborrowed the DVD for zip, I had no guilt about spending money so I wasable to enjoy it for it's unrelenting mayhem, crudity and sappy endingupstaged by even a crueler act of revenge against schoolyard bullies.

Unwatchable

I love to laugh. I appreciate humor like the next guy and grew up watching the original SNL cast and the Blues Brothers etc. Elf is a good movie. This one stinks and is completely unwatchable--unless, of course, you think watching Will rub his balls on a drum set for several seconds is money well spent. You would think that with the resources available to Hollywood, they could actually make something worth 2 hours of a person's time. Not clever, not engaging, nothing redeeming. Just plain horrible.

I thought that it is supposed to be a comedy...

I like both actors and most of their movies, but Step Brothers was a 1hour and 45 minutes of boredom and mixed feelings.I seriously thought that this movies is a comedy but after a 10 or 20minutes I realised that I did not have any laugh so far, not even asingle smile on my face... The movie bet on two points that might makepeople laugh. One of them is situational comedy but many times soabsurd it is not funny at all. More like pathetic or awkward. The otherpoint is Will Ferrell and John Reilly cursing on each other. There wasno intelligent humour whatsoever and my first laugh came like 10minutes before the end.I expected much much more and so this movie is a big disappointment. Ihope that these two actors will forget this movie and try to work onsomething more enjoyable.

My Favorite Movie (and go to watch if I am feeling down)

OK, so it's not the most intellectual movie out there but it is my favorite movie and I never get tired of it. That's why I bought it. The chemistry between Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly is awesome in this movie. It is a strangely different movie not like any of the movies these have made together or apart in the past. I just know that watching these two act like little kids or at least early teenagers when they are really 40 years old is just terribly funny. The way so much of their behavior is so matter-of-fact while being totally out there for their age is crazy.I catch myself repeating quotes from it in certain situations and my husband and I both still laugh at parts of it all the time. Maybe having a teenage son makes it funnier. I am keeping it with me so when I feel down about anything, I can watch a few minutes and be laughing again. Ha ha!

Not Impressed

Let me start off by saying I am a big fan of the movie anchorman, and Ithink Will Farrel is a rather funny man. With that said however theyare making WAY too many movies with him as the lead comic role, and heplays the exact same character in each one. They have been slowlykilling his humor for me. As for Step Brothers I think its the worst ofall his movies so far. The jokes were fairly brainless and had littlewit to them. There was also a lot of swearing. At some points in themovie I felt like people were laughing because some one in the movieused an F-word. I can understand a 12 year old laughing at that, butthats it. Characters like Derek (Brennan's brother) made the movie seemlike a children's movie because he was played so over the top andunrealistically. However he swears a lot and is very vulgar so I doubtkids would find it funny either. All in all I laughed maybe two and ahalf times at the movie just because Will Farrel is still pretty funny,but he had little to work with in this script.

Worst movie I have ever seen...

This has got to be the worst movie that has ever made it into theatres.I cannot see anything funny about this at all. I loved anchorman, Ihave watched it numerous times, I loved old school, Will Farrel wasvery funny in that as well. Now I actually had high expectations forthis flick and I wish I'd never watched it. I couldn't even sit itthrough and had to stop at 3/4 of this atrocity. I wish I could deletethe scenes of mindless, brain-numbing and not even mediocre attempts atslapstick comedy from my memory.Two apparently deeply disturbed or possibly retarded men, ruining theirfamily's lives over nothing. I have seen better acting done by monkeysin the zoo, though I must admit that the so called humour of this"movie" seems to have gotten a lot of its inspiration from primatebehaviour.I do not recommend this crime in the name of comedy to anyone in theirright minds. It's a waste of time, I wish I had pirated the movie andnot rented it but I think I'll try to get my money back. In fact, I amso angry at the director and producers of this abomination for stealingvaluable time from me, I had to register on IMDb to write a comment.If you are one of the people who have given this thing a higher ratingthan 3, you must've been high like a kite. I wouldn't argue about athing like that as it's usually a matter of taste, but this crapwouldn't even pass for trash...Don't waste your time on this, you'll make better use of it bangingyour head against a wall.

Funniest movie I have ever seen.

This Movie was So good Will Ferrel and John Riley make a awesome teamon screen they made one of the funniest movies ever like Talladeganights. And it wasn't one of those stupid movies like epic movie orsuper hero movie it was really funny to with some funny scenes. ialmost cried from laughing but there were some disgusting scenes.Otherwise i loved this movie. i Suggest you watch but not recommendedfor children But still go watch with your Girlfriend or Wife OrFriends. I suggest do not watch movie by yourself cuz then it just wontbe the same if you rent it watch it wit some friend but watch it withsome and leave your brains at home. just bring a smile to the theaters.I hope You found this comment useful.

pretty good

This was a pretty good movie. It's something with John C. Reilly andWill Ferrell that when they say anything, it's just funny. This isn'tthe best Apatow film, but it is good and funny, definitely not a wasteof time and you will find yourself quoting this movie, like all theother Apatow films. Don't go into it expecting 40 year old virginquality, but similar to anchorman and Talladega Nights in its humor.The story could have been developed better, but saying that it's not asgood as Talladega Nights misrepresents the movie, because all of his(Apatow's) films are funny and consist of the same type of humor. Ifyou're older, i definitely wouldn't recommend watching this with youryoung children, or if you are easily offended because there is a lot ofswear words. But i do highly recommend this movie, enjoy!

A suppose dumb comedy without the comedy

I really can't understand how anyone can find this movie to be funny. Iknow a comedy doesn't have to be clever to be funny. But this movie hastwo characters going at it with each other while being stupid. Which isfine if it was funny but all the jokes in this fall flat. You can tellWill Ferrell and John C. Reilly tries really hard to be funny but theyjust aren't cause the jokes are terrible. Overall this is a comedy thatis dumb without it being funny. The constant toilet humor in this justdidn't work. I give this movie a 3 because of one memorable part thatis alright which is the Catalina Win Mixer.3/10

Stepbrothers - Not for all, but DEFINITELY for me

Stepbrothers is a moronic, lowbrow, sophmoric (in that is the second movie Ferrell and Riley made me laugh through) attempt at humor.Fortunately, I am a moron (sometimes), enjoy lowbrow humor (enjoy all humor actually), and was once a sophmore in both college and in high school.This movie is not going to win any awards, or break any records, but it is going to take one flimsy premise (two step brothers are forced to live together as their parents get married) as far as it can go.(Spoiler alert) I loved the balls on the drum set routine. And that was a thread they used throughout the movie. I also loved the dog poo licking scene. Dried old white dog poop is funny, I don't care what anyone says. But my favorite scene was the first scene where the two stepbrothers sit down for that first meal. I have had meals of similar hilarity and discomfort before, so I laughed very hard and loud at that scene.Anyway, to blather less and conclude more, this movie is not for everyone. No movie is. But if you are willing to take this at what it is (lets call it Ricky Bobby lite but slightly less funny) and just enjoy it. If you cant enjoy this, go watch something else.

It's one of those movies that you will instantly be able to quote word for word. I'm not always a huge Will Ferrell fan, but he did an excellent job in this movie, and kept me laughing and entertained the whole way through.

Sadly Ferrell fans, the Step Brothers laughs are immature and unsatisfying

I consider myself a Will Ferrell fan, although nothing since"Anchorman" has ever compared to it and I didn't even see "Blades ofGlory" or "Semi-Pro." That aside, "Step Brothers" made me shocked thatthis was the same duo that made me laugh so hysterically in the past.Now I wouldn't call any of Ferrell and director/writer Adam McKay'scollaborations "mature" by any means, but "Step Brothers" is a giantimmaturity-seeking missile that really doesn't best utilize thehumorous talents of its stars. Maybe the obscure insults andmythological references have gotten cold with me, but this film showsthat this duo's work is out of gas.The premise is pretty much an excuse for immature humor, as twojobless, loser 40-year- olds move in with each other when their parentsget married. From the get-go, stars Ferrell and his favorite cohort,John C. Reilly, stay committed to acting 10 years old the entire movie.No, they're not acting like 40-year-olds with 10 year-old tendencies,they're literally acting 10, just with fouler mouths. So, like all10-year-olds, sometimes they're funny and sometimes they're annoyingand stupid. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough consistently cleverhumor to excuse the dumb jokes at any point in time.I don't know how much was improvised or not, but the dialogue waspretty terrible. Either that or that humor has just gotten too stale. Idefinitely didn't expect this to be as good as Ferrell's best films,but it wasn't even close. I can quote most of those other movies, but Iwon't remember many lines from this one. I'll admit I laughedfrequently during this film, but at it because it was dumb, not with itbecause it was clever.The rest of the cast was, as expected from anything Apatow produced, abroad range of crazy characters with their own quirks. The only guy Ireally liked was the father of Reilly's character, played by RichardJenkins. He was able to pull off the two-faced nature of his character,being both goofy at times and really serious and uptight. The rest ofthe cast were actors getting a chance to climb up the Apatow ladder,none of whom stood out."Step Brothers" is pretty much ridiculous, enough to make me laugh, butnot enough for me to say I actually liked it as a film. This is nothingmore than a DVD rental for those who simply need a dose of shenanigans.

Horrible - Not funny

This movie is about two adults who live with their parents, becausethey "have not grown up"This is a clear example of a horrible move, but because the media tellsus we are going to like it people say its funny. This is notintelligent humor, it is not situational humor. This is humor aimed atchildren but rated R. This is Will Ferrel at his worst. The two main characters had fun making it - that I am sure of. I decided to give it a complete shot, despite the fact that half of thetheater walked out. There are a few funny moments but predictable. Recommendation - Don't see this trash. If you must see this, borrow afriends DVD so that you don't waste any money.

Boats and Hoes

Another top notch comedic performance. There was no purpose to the movie, but Ferrell and Riley are phenoms. Bunk beds, pumpkin smashing, ninja breathing tecniques, and a tree house full of porn. What could be better? Only a movie quality Chewbaca mask...
