We were entertained, my wife said it is very faithful to the book.
Not a new theme at all but handled well with interesting dialog and theactors inhabit their characters very nicely. The theme is a best friendtaking away a romantic interest, and then spending the entire movierunning time trying to figure out what to do about it.Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since they were very smallkids. Now grown up and around 30-something, Darcy is getting married toDex, the guy she met when he was good friends with Rachel in lawschool. He and Rachel had never dated, each was unsure the other wasinterested in romance. But Darcy is the outgoing type that insinuatesherself into any situation, and essentially stole Dex away from Rachelbefore they could figure it out. Now, 6 years later, both Rachel and Dex are having second thoughts, didthey do the right thing? Should the wedding go forward in 2 months? Ilove Ginnifer Goodwin since her days 10 years ago on the TV series"Ed", and she is Rachel who seems to be willing to do anything forother people and not necessarily taking care of herself. Kate Hudson isher best friend Darcy. And Colin Egglesfield, who often looks just likea young Tom Cruise, is Dex.Supporting roles of their friends include John Krasinski as Ethan,Rachel's good friend who keeps on telling her she needs to do what isright for her and quit just waiting for things to happen. A refugeefrom the Reba TV show, Steve Howey is Marcus, a bit rough around theedges and seems to chase every pretty girl he meets. And perhaps thefunniest of all, Ashley Williams as Claire who desperately wants arelationship with Ethan, but he tries hard to brush her off, eventelling her he just figured out he was gay. She accepts the challengeto set him straight. When we watch this type of movie, just fluff, we only hope to beentertained, and we were.SPOILERS: As wedding preparations go forward, Dex and Rachel findthemselves alone, and find their affection for each other, neverdeclared those 6 years ago, are real and lasting. Dex doesn't know whatto do, Rachel doesn't know what to do. But eventually Dex decides tocall off the wedding, around the time that ditzy Darcy is messingaround, and is now pregnant with Marcus' baby. We observe that Darcyand Marcus are probably best for each other anyway, and now Rachel andDex have the chance to pursue their relationship.

I think this is DEFINITELY a chick flick.
1st: Gennifer Goodwin. I should give this another couple of stars justbecause shes in the movie. And she looks great. Maybe Goodwin is not ahotie-hotie but she is definitely a hot cutie. But even her cuteness(and believe me, the entire movie revolves around her being cute &vulnerable) could not make this movie the least bit interesting. And Kate Hudson? She is bad in this thing. I've liked her in some othermovies but I just found her annoying, very annoying, in this one. I'msure most of us have a friend or two somewhat like her. But if theywere like Hudson? We, unlike Goodwin, would probably start a scheduleto take turns putting Prozac in her morning coffee. I did feel for thefiancé though. Facing a lifetime of living with the Hudson character?Wow.I didn't find any one scene in the movie that had any flavor or realityto it.I'm not certain even a lot chicks would like this movie. Maybe thegirls who seem to want the guys that are already taken? The grass isalways greener? But I recommend that you don't waste your time. Even ifyou like Kate Hudson or Ginnifer Goodwin. If a chick flick is a must, find something else.I don't want a refund, I want the 5-6 hours (it truly felt 5-6 hourslong) back.

Loved it
For a chick flick, it was superb. The chemistry between Ginnifer and Colin was electric. Ethan (don't know his real name) gave an excellent supporting performance.

god awful
This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) I hated everything about this film. If in the future I meet a person that tells me that they enjoyed this movie I will know to stay very far away from them. I can not believe a woman wrote this.

Liked It-A Fun Movie
This review is from: Something Borrowed (DVD) After reading the book and missing the movie in theaters and then seeing the movie receive bad reviews, I was a bit nervous. I liked the book fairly well although I found the way the ending handled Darcy's character to be cheap and unrealistic. It was the one thing that really disappointed me with the story. I thought the actors did a great job and I laughed many times throughout. I actually found the portrayal of Rachel to be dead on with the book; her lack of assertion was more bearable in the movie than the book for me because it wasn't as long as reading her indecision and lack of confidence for many, many pages. Overall I am pleased with the movie and am glad I bought it.

Zero stars!
I wish I could give this movie a big fat zero star. I've watched this movie a few times on HBO. I had to watch it more than once because I couldn't decide if I loved or hated this movie. I decided to remain undecided because I loved AND hated this movie. I loved this movie because I love all happy endings and Colin Egglesfield is mucho yummy looking. I hated this movie for more reasons:1) cheating in relationships2) lying in relationships3) being a doormat in relationships and friendships4) hate the impression it gives to other women that it's ok to wait around for a guy who's in a relationship and that it's ok to cheat.Ginnifer Goodwin drove me crazy. Her unrealistic eternal optimism about her relationship with Dex (Colin Egglesfield) is stupid, stupid, stupid. Colin's Egglesfield character is quite possibly the weakest man (in every sense) in any rom-com's I've ever watched. Can you say wishy-washy? Oh and Kate Hudson's character was just hateful. Her character in the movie was just malicious. Then again, the characters were a trifecta of stupid. Ethan (John Krasinski) was the only character that made any sense. But that's only when he was trying to talk some sense into the main female character (G. Goodwin).

close to the book
This review is from: Something Borrowed (DVD) I absolutely loved this book and was excited to see it was being made into a movie. It follows the book pretty closely. The addition of John Krasinski as Ethan (he lives in London for the entire book) was a real treat. I loved Gennifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson was a fabulous Darcy and played out her self-centeredness perfectly.

They forgot to add this to the deleted scenes.
This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) It was ok I guess, the part where he told her he couldn't choose her ruined the momentum,And seeing her Devastated laying in bed on top of the building afterward, wow. If they delete that scene then I'll give it 4 Stars.

Very great adaption!!!
I've been able to watch a test screening of the movie in early Februaryduring the Berlin Film Festival in Berlin, Germany. I've been a big fan of the book(s), so I was really looking forward tohow they adapted "Something Borrowed". First of all, the actors weregreat. I didn't expect it at first, but Ginnifer and Colin were justperfect as Rachel and Dex. They did such an amazing job and I wassitting in the cinema with a pounding heart the whole time. Kate andJohn were hilarious, but I didn't expect any less and just because ofthose two, I really hope they'll adapt "Something Blue" (the sequel to"Something Borrowed") as well. I've read the book a couple of years ago, so I don't remember everydetail of it, but I don't think they left any major facts out. It's agreat chick-flick. I'm not sure if guys will enjoy it much, but it's agreat movie to watch with your girlfriends/mother/sisters, etc.

Great movie!!
This review is from: Something Borrowed (DVD) Such a cute love story. A movie I just had to have for my collection! I think it is a must see :)

mediocre
This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) Movie was rarely funny and barely worth the time we invested in it. I think Kate Hudson phoned this one in.

Loved the book! Loved the Movie
I am a huge Emily Giffin fan and truthfully I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the movie. Many times the movies aren't as good as the books. There were changes made to fit the time constant, but the changes that were mad I thought enhanced the story. Instead of falling in love with Ethan in book two we get to love him in the movie or I did! I hope they make something blue into a movie too!

Fanaticalaboutfilms Review Something Borrowed
Something Borrowed follows Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) as she meets Dex(Colin Egglesfield) at university where they become best friends withfeelings clearly developing but neither of them acting on saidfeelings. So when Rachel's best friend the selfish and obnoxious Darcy(Kate Hudson) shows up and asks Dex out, Rachel gives her blessing, Dexsays yes and several years later they are engaged to be married. This leaves Rachel distraught for letting Dex slip through her fingersand with the cowardly and wimpish Dex (I'm sure just what ladies lookfor in a man) still conflicted as to what to do next. After Rachel'sbirthday celebrations though, she and Dex end up sleeping together andsupposed hilarity ensues as they try yet again ignore the chemistrybetween them and just let life run its course.Thank god for Ethan (John Krasinski) Rachel's friend who gave a voiceof reason to proceedings by at least attempting to beat some sense intothe main characters who seemed to be oblivious to everything aroundthem. I think my main fault with the movie was the storyline and theway we are supposed to feel for Rachel despite the fact that she didn'tmake a go of it with Dex, everything that happened to her was selfinflicted and she has slept with her best friend's fiancé; and giventhat Darcy isn't a very nice person to say the least that either ofthem hung around with her in the first place. The supporting cast outside the four main characters didn't add to thefilm in any way shape or form. With some movies you get the tokencelebrities who show up for 10 seconds, say a line and then leave againand this is how the rest of the cast felt to me for the entire movie. They were just written in for one line and then would disappear neverto be seen or heard from again.Apart from a few witty remarks here and a bit of slapstick, there wasnot much comedy in the film with the overall feel of it leaning moretowards a drama with a bit of comedy rather than the other way aroundwhich I feel is the better mix for this genre. There was nothing wrongwith the acting with Goodwin and Egglesfield doing their jobs andcreating some chemistry but it was merely a minor consolation whichcan't cover up the rest of the issues highlighted. As romcom's go this was one of the worse that I've seen so much so thateven if your an avid fan of this type of movie you'll have a hard timegetting any pleasure out of watching it. Time to forget about this andmove onto another one.For further reviews feel free to check out:http://www.fanaticalaboutfilms.com

incredibly disgusted by this movie
I watched this because I've always been a fan of GG. I think she'spretty in a less conventional way, but definitely prettier than KateHudson.Which brings me to one point. This movie was one of those ugly ducklingmovies without the ugly duckling. Rachel (GG) admits that she "neverthought a guy like you would end up with someone like me..." as if shehas three heads or a skin condition or something equally appalling. Shehas none of these things. She's pretty, she has a good career, and theonly major personality flaw she has is the inability to be proactive(which shouldn't be a problem since her love interest is the EXACT SAMEWAY). Yeah. This is a terrible movie with absolutely no action in ituntil the very end. We don't even get to see the scene where Darcy isdumped.Adding to the incredible coincidence that neither Rachel nor Dex knowwhat to do in this incredibly obvious situation (we know Dex has somemommy issues, but that wasn't really explained... I can't rememberanything his mother said or did, aside from a few woeful looks). Theonly person we hear any reason from is Ethan, and by then we all wantto smack some sense into the main characters. What bothers me incredibly about this movie is that it basically drivesloyalty between "best friends" straight into the ground. Not only doesRachel sleep with her best friend's fiancé, she doesn't TELL her bestfriend her mistake, she sleeps with Dex again, encourages Darcy tomarry this guy who is cheating on her and doesn't love her, and thencontemplates telling Dex that Darcy cheated on HIM. Who is gettingmajorly screwed over here? In all the mixup and emo WHAT DO WE DOaction (or lack thereof), it's easy to forget who is being hurt themost.Uh oh. The script writers went a little too far...IN COMES...villainizing! It's a common trick in cinema to demonizecharacters so that we stay rooting for the main character. This wasvery overdone in this movie. At first Darcy had a few good traits thatyou could see, but it wasn't long before she become entirely RIDICULOUSas a character. By the end of the movie, we discover that she's alsobeen cheating on Dex this WHOLE TIME...AND...she's pregnant. She had todo something a bit worse in order for us to forgive Rachel. In doingso, the depth of Darcy was lost - and everyone has depth, let's notfool ourselves. Obviously the movie wasn't about her, it was aboutRachel, but it sends the message that it's okay to screw your bestfriend over as long as she's doing it too - and when does that actuallyhappen? It also sends the message that it's okay to wait on a man toleave his fiancé and to not give up too soon, because he might have aREALLY GOOD REASON. Wrong. If a man isn't leaving his wife, he's notgoing to, so you just better move on. Those are the cold, hard facts.AND, if a man is cheating on his fiancé/wife/girlfriend with you, he'sgoing to do the exact same thing once your relationship with him gets alittle rocky (that is, if you ever make it to a relationship). Butseriously - once a cheater, always a character. Obviously his moralsare not fantastic. If he loves you, he'll leave her, if he doesn't,don't bother waiting around. You deserve better.Ethan was the only character that seemed to agree with this philosophy.I really wanted the movie to end with Rachel going off with someoneelse, someone who knew what to do from the beginning and didn't standweakly by and take forever to figure out that love is more importantthan his father's glare.I hated the weakness of these characters. I hated the message. I hatedthe necessity of making Darcy's character unbearable so that we won'tend up despising the main characters for their despicable actions. What's worse is that no one was punished for the horrible betrayal thattook place in this movie - they were rewarded.

Unbelievable script.. no really, I cant believe it
Darcy is a tramp. She likes to party and be the center of attention.Dex seems like a really nice guy and he is confident. Rachel is shy andignorant of the world. When Darcy moves in on Dex in the opening scene of the movie, Dex(being the guy that he is) would never, every have let Rachel go. Hewouldn't have focused on Darcy. The reason? Because he was the one whosuggested that they have dinner. This is why he used the "Dex BuysCongratulatory Dinner" sneak to get her out to dinner with him. Healready knew the girl he loved and who he wanted to get to be with. Also the "holding hands" across the table or "not" is ridiculous. Whohas their hands so close together and doesn't either withdraw them oractually start to hold hands? Please. The writer's I see are female so it's obvious they didn't consult withmales to see how they would have handled the situation. No man. None.Would have let the women they have the "ache" for go. No blonde bimbois going to hose that deal. This major flaw in the script is what ruins the movie for me (and mybetter half). It ruins the rest of the movie because it is the weakfoundation for which the rest of the script is written. While the acting and characters are good, the movie slows down a littlebit about 3/4th through and there are some short scenes which reallyaren't needed. Some one screwed up on the editing.I'd loved to give this movie more stars, but I can't, it just isn'tworth it even though I loved so many other things about the it.This movie is worth one viewing, but don't get your hopes up for akiller love story. This isn't a movie I would own on DVD even if it wasa gift. I'd sell it off to get some quick cash for a better movie.

a movie about 2 selfish, lying best friends...
if that sounds great to you, then check this film out. But I thoughtthis was terrible. All 3 main characters in this are terrible to oneanother and claim to be best friends. Dex and Darcy are to be married;however, Rachel was the first to meet Dex in law school. She basicallylet Darcy have him by not being proactive. So, just weeks before thewedding, Rachel and Dex sleep together and the next you know, they saythey love each other, but Dex doesn't want to leave Darcy. And theycontinue the affair. Rachel is supposed to be the good one here, buthow can you even like her with what she is doing behind her bestfriends back. Then at the end to make it "OK" for Rachel to be withDex, Darcy announces she's pregnant by some other guy. So lame.BTW: Kate Hudson looks awful in this. They must have run out of budgetfor all the airbrushing for her.FINAL VERDICT: Do not watch this.

dont think there is a spoiler, but its my first review and dont wanna be blacklisted
Who likes long reviews of crap movies? Not me.To be short, it's a movie in which everyone cheats and you (the viewer)feel bad for no one. They are all terrible people in their own ways, but nobody gets a sad ending. Life? No. At least funny? Not in theleast. Yes, it's true to life, (said by the father figure, the onlylogic spit throughout the whole movie), a struggle between what youwant and what's right.Let's face it. In life, no one is that good looking, your friends (andyou!) actually do shitty things and we don't have movie script endings.(and btw. i do enjoy crap rom-coms. i'd watch Bride Wars over this BSany day, and i hate Anne Hathaway.)

one of my least favorite romances
first time doing a review... feel like i really need to share so people don't waste their time/money. honestly, i'm a huge fan of romantic comedies/dramas. however, the acting in this movie was so poor and the story-line was lame. i really couldn't relate to the characters and didn't find them at all believable. i wouldn't even watch this movie if it was shown on a transatlantic flight and i had nothing better to do. and that says a lot.

Confused on How I Feel...
I went on a date tonight to see this movie. The movie was interesting in some ways. I loved some of the romance parts, but of course I hate how it wasn't very moral. :/ First of all, the way Rachel did her friend was terrible. Then, her friend, Darcy, didn't have much room to be pissed herself, because apparently she made her own big mistakes. Dex was pretty likeable in ways; yet, he was also sorta a jerk, which made it hard to approve of the developing relationship completely. Also, it was a little dumb how Rachel got mad about Dex making a decision when she had been denying him pretty much all along and was dishonest about her feelings about him. He tried to get with her like 10 times (past and present), and she walked away all the time! The big con about this movie for me was that the plot was everywheeere. It was hard to know what the main point of the movie was... about love or about friendship. And it had so many points and factors to different stuff. There were so many twists and turns that it left you confused on how to feel about people and the situations.A lot of the characters were rather unlikeable on certain levels, and I hated Kate Hudson's role. She usually plays a nice, good girl in movies. It just sucked seeing her as such an airheaded, slutty b$*#%!Another thing is I don't know what was up with the ending. The twist was kinda nice not to have a cliche ending. However, it left you confused on some topics. Some questions were never really answered, and it seemed that things were left rather unresolved. The movie was cute and comical in ways, and I thought it was sweet how the best friend liked his friend (but then it sucked, because he was turned down!). And like I said, I liked some of the romance about always liking someone and trying to be with who you think you're meant for. Also, some of the things that were said about needing someone to make a decision about a relationship rather applies to my situation. And I could relate to being like Rachel in the way that she was always sorta jealous of her best friend and felt like her friend was better than her and always wins. So, I'm just really confused on how to feel about this movie.

Just So-So, A Bit Disconnected and Some Unlikable Characters Hard to Get Past
I generally like chick-lit romantic comedies, and am forgiving of the genre, but although this had good moments, overall I just can't give it more than 3 stars. The story came off as too disjointed, and some of the characterizations just didn't work. It's partly the fault of the complicated material - it centers on two best girl friends, played by Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson. Hudson's character is a diva, and about to marry a good friend of Goodwin's (Colin Egglesifled) - who Goodwin still has feelings for, and eventually ends up in an affair with. The story centers around the affair, and Hudson's and Goodwin's friendship. While the film takes a decent stab at exploring infidelity and the complications of true-life romance, the characters end up too unlikable. I just ended up frustrated with everyone - Hudson's character seems too self-centered for anyone to like, Goodwin's too passive, and Egglesfield too dull to be inspiring all this passion and indecision. The film isn't overly tortured about the immorality of all the cheating and lying going on either. And then to top it off, John Krasinski (The Office), whom I'm a big fan of, is misused and underused, as a friend of Goodwin's.So overall, had some interesting moments, enough for 3 stars, but just didn't work at a level beyond that.
