Boring with dubious intention

I watched this movie as a Blue-Ray DVD in 3D on television. So far Ithought that a movie could not be that bad that stunning 3D effectswouldn't make it fun to watch anyway. At least this was my experienceuntil Sammy's adventures. Although the 3D effects were partlyimpressive, especially the underwater scenes, it was almost impossibleto watch the movie until the end. There are two reasons.First I had to fight massive tiredness. Already after about 5 minutesyou feel that this movie will probably become boring. And this feelingis right, it's one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. This isbecause there is no coherent plot, the characters are dull and you justdon't care about what happens to them.More important is the movie's intention which is so flat, not to sayprimitive that you get annoyed quickly. In short term: humans are bad. They put oil in the water motiveless, cut trees, kill whales, huntfishes, pollute the environment, make global warming. There is no goodabout them, with two exceptions: Greenpeace is good and hippies aregood. The rest is just a pain in the ass for the world. It is funny tosee that the smoke coming out of the pipe of the Greenpeace boat is athin light gray cloud, while the other boats spit out massive blackclouds. This example gives an impression of the way the movie tries tomanipulate, especially the targeted audience which are kids. So it isjust a long sequence of cruelties the humans do to the nature withoutconnection and without traceable motivation.Probably the writer/producer share a hardcore view of the world wherehumans are just an error of nature disrupting the system. In this casethey could do something better for the environment by saving theelectric energy which was dissipated making this movie.

Best 3D ever

Perfect film for its target audience. It seems to me that the otherreviewers did not see this film with the intended audience. 4 to 8 yearold kids love it. It's a simple story but the 5 kids I took to see thisfilm for a birthday party loved it (in Paris, last Summer) and so didthe other 150 or so film goers in the theater. The characters areadorable. Much better turtles and underwater environments than in thedated "Finding Nemo". The message about the environment was great too.Not patronizing, just the right amount. I wonder how they can do it, ata fraction of the cost of the US budgets for animation. But best ofall: the 3D. By far the best use of the technology I have seen so far.Not even Avatar comes close. This alone is worth the price ofadmission. I have seen several 3D films since and they seem to begetting from bad to worse.

Slowly flowing on the raft of life

Sammy (voiced by Yuri Lowenthal) was born during the hippie era. One ofthe last to leave the nest in a rush for the ocean his fate seemeddoomed to be short and tragic. But some wit and bravado enables him toreach the ocean, whilst unwittingly saving Snow (Melanie Griffith) aswell. Soon after he embarks on a journey through life that will see himmeet a plethora of friends and venturing around the world in theprocess...I did have some initial doubts about commenting on this movie - beingundeniably spoilt with the charm and wit of Miyazaki or Pixar. How wellare adults prepared to voice their opinion about an animation, whosetarget audience seems inevitably to be below the teen-line and wouldhave probably never seen this movie were it not for my child.Nonetheless I decided to venture into an opinion basing my review on apurely adult perspective. And in this context Sammy's adventures fail to impress or even engage, unlike the already mentioned Miyazaki creativity, which manages tocapture the warmth in adults, take a grip of it and indulge everyoneconcerned into childhood fantasies. Sammy basically drifts through lifeand unfortunately the way of life is also predominantly the feel of themovie: slow, unfocused and with no real point to it.The animation is really tremendous and a pleasure for the eye, whichmakes it a visually appealing experience for all involved. As a parentI much prefer such beauty to captivate my child's eye than theharshness and grossness of most of Cartoon Network's offering. Withthis perspective in mind I didn't feel my time was wasted on the movie, even though several almost visceral and realistic chase sequences withpiranhas or sharks seemed a bit out of place given the overall tone ofthe animation. At times it did make the film seem more like somethingfrom the Animal Planet and not a children's story. The life of Sammy may be a visually stunning and happy affair, but itis unable to invoke the emotions necessary to make it anything otherthan an adequate Sunday child timewaster.

Twilight Meets Birdemic

I volunteer at an art-house cinema every weekend and I normally usherat the kids film (mostly because everyone else hates it). I do admit, many of the kids film are mediocre (usually just re-showing amainstream Hollywood film), but not usually this bad. There was apreview showing of this film on my last shift. Where do I begin? The writing is absolutely abysmal, shoving aconspicuous environmental message in your face while torturing you withits' one dimensional characters. The characters have no real chemistry;we are told that Ray and Sammy are essentially soul mates and we dospend a lot of screen time with them, but I am not convinced by theirrelationship whatsoever. The character development in general istotally contrived and it does not enhance the plot (which is sort ofthe point of characterisation). The plot is boring, unfocused and badlystructured, with the protagonists goal changing throughout the durationof the film (and I mean that it randomly changes). It seems that thewriter also enjoys using Deus Ex Machina a lot. It doesn't try toemotionally or intellectually engage with its' audience. Rather, itpreaches on about how we need to protect our planet, waving theaccusatory finger at the children in the audience. Now, I'm not against its' environmental message; 'WALL-E' had the sametheme and it was a masterpiece. The difference here lies in theexecution of the idea. 'WALL-E' is well written and does not bully theaudience into a certain world-view. It is a plot and character drivenstory that allows us to emotionally engage with the situation as weabsorb the message through osmosis. Its' like the people responsiblefor 'Sammy's Adventure' put no passion into it and only wanted to tellpeople to recycle. In terms of animation, its pretty good. Not as good as what people aremaking it out to be, though, as it does seem a bit off at times. Its hard to judge the quality of the voice acting as the version that Isaw was a British-English dub (I have no idea why, seeing as it was aword-for-word re-dub of the original) and that version was simplyterrible. It was the kind of voice acting I would expect from astraight to DVD rip-off of 'Finding Nemo'. However, I did see a tinyclip of the original dub and the voice acting is a lot better (even if,objectively, it's not anything impressive). As for the design/overall look of the film, it's pretty...meh. It'snice looking, don't get me wrong. It's just that they are obviouslytrying to imitate other studios. The style of the film is very blandand boring. It would have been nice to see something a bit morecreative. In fact, the credits had some really nice designs and Iwonder why they didn't try to make it more like that. I didn't see it in 3D, so all the scenes in which the 3D gimmicks weresupposed to occur were even more distracting and pointless (especiallythe part with the octopus, which had no bearing on the plotwhatsoever).I surprised by the amount of praise that it is already getting. If thiswere a big Hollywood movie, it would never be given so much adulation. This film is as tedious to watch as 'Twilight' and as laughably bad as'Birdemic', which is why I call it "Twilight Meets Birdemic". Now,unlike 'Twilight', it doesn't have a bad message, but if I had kids, Iwould not take them to see this and spare them the 88 minutes ofboredom. I'm giving this film a 2 out of 10 because the animation is the onlything redeeming about it.
