Storyline

Plot Summary:

Biographic movie of the witty, overachieving, hot-tempered Rudy Giuliani, spaning from his rising days as a New York district attorney in the early 1980s to his marriage to part-time actress Donna Hanover, to his candicies for mayor of New York City and his controversial methods to tackle the citys crime and urban problems, as well as his romance with his assistant Cristyne Lategano which lead to the failure of his marriage, to his battle with prostate cancer, all leading up to the terrible day of September 11, 2001 which Guiliani himself narrowly escaped death after suicide terrorists hijacked and crashed two passenger airliners into the twin World Trade Center towers leading to their collapse in which Guilianis toughness and spirited personality help calm the citys residents to face the chaos on that day which made him a national hero.

A disappointment

As a New Yorker, I am proud of Giuliani and felt that viewers of "Rudy"would walk away with the impression that the mayor did little for hiscity. When I tuned in to this film, I thought I was going to watch afilm that would really do justice to Rudy Giuliani's work as mayor.Instead, the screenplay focused on Giuliani's extra-maritalrelationships. His work to eliminate organized crime did not appear tobe an enormous challenge in this film, and the screenwriter did notseem to care about accenting Giuliani's accomplishments. He was moreconcerned with reducing Giuliani to the status of an adulterer. Thecontinuous focus on Giuliani's love life made his commitment to lowerthe crime laws look like a trivial accomplishment and the portrayal ofhis battle with cancer made him look weak rather than stoic. If, asJames Woods said, this is a film that without Rudy-bashing, I cannotimagine what those who disprove of the politician would produce.Viewers would benefit from finding another way to spend two hours oftheir lives.

Penelope Ann Miller

It's too bad the talented Penelope Ann Miller was cast in thisgarbage! Her talent and acting ability should be used for muchbetter roles than this. As usual, Penelope is always outstanding,no matter what she is in but this role was sickening. Hope to seeher in better stuff than this in the future.

Very much a tv movie, but less glossy than expected

Taking the events of September 11th as it's foundation, the film tells thetale of Rudy Giuliani's rise up the political ladder, his hard-line stanceas Attorney and Mayor of New York. It also shows his affairs and thebreakdown of his marriage despite the strength of the man in times oftesting. As will now be an annual event, the television companies all rolled outfilms and documentaries on the 2nd anniversary of 9/11. The main commercialstation's choice was this sort of bio-pic of Rudy Giuliani with the focus onSeptember 11th widening to take in the 15 or so years prior to that moment. The manner of structuring the film in this way means that it could have beena flag waving salute to a man who become world famous (or more famous!) onthat day. However, despite cutting back and forth, the majority of the filmoccurs before the attack. I found the attack scenes hard to watch as I waswatching a film for entertainment – I suppose this was unavoidable, but Idon't like seeing the pictures too often in case they stop shocking me and Iget used to them. The back story to Giuliani is interesting as I admired his stance on crimewhen he was Mayor. I didn't know a lot of detail of his career as I'm notin the US but the film delivered a simplified version to good effect. Surprisingly the film didn't gloss it's subject too often and wasn't afraidto show his affairs, his tempers of his right wing views. This made it feelmore worthwhile although the TV production values do make it feel a littletacky at times.Woods does pretty well to hold the screen for the whole film and not spinRudy o be too sleazy or too heroic. I felt that he was a little animatedfor Rudy at times, as I always had the impression of him publicly as morecontrolled. The support cast (including Penelope Ann Miller) are all prettygood but do tend to seem more at home in TV land than Woodsdoes.Overall this was an interesting film, even if it is very much a snapshot andis driven by Woods rather than the wider story. The framing of the story by9/11 works well to set up the story, despite the strange feeling of seeingthe real footage inserted into a movie in this way.

9 - 11 The Man of the Moment Rudys Finest Hour

Rudy: The Rudy Giuliani Story (2003)emerged from the ashes of the worldtrade centre to less than positive reviews. Yet if there were a man whodeserves credit for holding the country together at that difficultmoment it was Rudy Giuliani. And this movie covers the pluses and theminuses of his administration. The whole sequence of 9 - 11 is a difficult subject matter to approachbecause it reveals flaws in the US system and the American personality.Lets go back to 9 - 11 at 9, the person who calls himself the warpresident, a man who had come to power in a cloudy election whichbordered on a coup d'etat vanished into the mist. Rudy Giuliani grabbedthe microphones and held the nation together. What kind of man doesthat? Is he a good family man? Well, no. While he was mayor he wascarrying on an affair with a staffer whom he appointed a Commissioner. He put her aside and took on another girlfriend. His incumbent wifelearned of his plans to divorce her from the newspapers. Still anotherformer wife was on the payroll in the Park's Department.Did he come from good family? Well, not exactly. Though famed as acrime fighter, Rudy acknowledged his father had done time.Did he act sensibly and with restraint? Perhaps not. Though Rudy ismuch lauded for a crack down on the Mafia, city police were in factarresting bicyclists for failing to carry identification and otherpicayune infractions. Were his police effective and well disciplined? Well no. The Finest asshown in this movie gunned down a Bronx householder who was attemptingto show identification. The movie didn't talk about the other wellknown transgression of morality, a sexual assault apparently sanctionedby an entire precinct. However, the man of the moment on 9 - 11 was Big Rudy and for all theill that can be said of him he deserves credit for his actions thatday. James woods captures the man and the moment in a grand eloquentperformance.
