What You Have To Remember Is This...

Det. Jane Rizzoli & Dr. Maura Isles aren't lesbians. This doesn't mean we can't imagine they are, or wish that they were. Itseems that from the very beginning, when Dr. Isles re-set Det.Rizzoli's broken nose in what seemed to be a tender and caring gesture(as tender as one can be, resetting a broken bone...) these two haveshared a kinship that surpasses the limitations of the words 'bestfriends'.The crime-side of this show has been somewhat over-looked for therelationship between the two stars, but it is still an integral part. With an outstanding supporting cast and brilliant writers, there is noreason why this show can't continue for many seasons to come.Granted, the weekly homicides aren't that brain-busting. If youconsider it is generally the person they only show once (and briefly)in the first fifteen minutes, then it's never really that hard tosurmise 'whodunnit' but there is still enough suspense to keep watchersintrigued.Ultimately, IMHO, this show gives the fans what we've been looking forsince the end of Xena: Warrior Princess. Two strong female leads withan extremely close relationship that frankly, could be alreadyconsidered a lesbian relationship, considering this - sex has nothingto do with sexuality.Even if the lesbian angle is not your cup of tea, don't worry. Really, neither hetero or homo-sexuality is rammed down our throats. Jane &Maura really are just the best of friends, and that in itself is awonderful thing to have on our screens. A close female friendshipwithout the rivalry we've seen in other shows, without thecompetitiveness we've seen hundreds of times over.As Det. Rizzoli declared - We're LLBFFs. Long-love Best FriendsForever. And there's nothing wrong with that!

Much Better

The cliché is beginning to disappear and the cast is getting morecomfortable, which make me more comfortable. I like how the directorshave unglued each other's shoulders from one another and they both dotheir own thing to solve a crime. This chemistry shows off thestrengths of stars. Did I say chemistry - I did. One of my earliercriticisms. The chemistry in this show is excellent and pure...amazingturn-around.OK…I was wrong. This show has turned in to a real peach! I have gonefrom not liking this drama and avoiding it at every turn to a fan whowants to watch reruns to catch up on what I have missed. (Odd…I did thesame thing for NCIS…connection? Hmmmm…maybe.) Angie Harmon's voice isno longer as grating as it was and I am over the hurt cause by theuntimely demise of Kate on NCIS. I guess the writing is kind of – sortof – really good. The direction…not flawless…only really close. I donot know what the show has done, but it has turned itself aroundsomehow and I really enjoy it. Oh did I mention the stars? I likethem…I get involved with the twists and turns of the plots frombeginning to end. One last thing…Kate – I mean Isles – keep your headdown and always wear your Kevlar.

Strong women, great banter

When I first heard of the new show with both Angie Harmon and SashaAlexander, 1) I was thrilled to see Sasha back on TV and 2) I wasworried that Angie Harmon's new character would be like Lindsay Boxer(Women's Murder Club) which bored the crap out of me.I found the banter between Rizzoli and Isles was quite refreshing. Andbeing a woman myself, I can see that kind of fun, brash, candid talkhappening. Both women are strong characters which I love! The chemistrybetween the two is so obvious it's wonderful.I loved Sasha in NCIS, but she was shadowed by the men on the show. ILOVE NCIS! But Sasha needed her own and now she's got it along withAngie, this show is strong and stays true to the books. If you don'tlike strong headed women, you might now like this show.Hooray for Tess!!!!

Didnt break the mold

When Sasha Alexander's character was written out of "NCIS" I was verydisappointed. Ms. Alexander brought a warmth, intelligence andcamaraderie to the show that would prove hard to replace. So, when Iheard that she had landed a lead role in "Rizzoli and Isles" I waslooking forward to it.I lasted 10 minutes. There are no spoilers because I couldn't bringmyself to watch any more. The script was two-dimensional andunimaginative at best. The characters, from top to bottom were solifeless that cardboard cutouts would have been as effective and wouldhave saved some money. If you can't find anything else to watch instead of "Rizzoli and Isles"might I suggest a good book, doing some dishes or perhaps, hemming somepants.

Absolutely positively outstanding!!

After watching the first episode of Rizzoli & Isles I was more thansatisfied .. I've wanted to see Sasha Alexander and Angie Harmon backon my t.v screen ever since Sasha left N.C.I.S and Women's Murder Clubgot canceled. Sasha is supposed to act the way she acts in the t.v showit is in no way bad acting she's supposed to be a bid like Brennan fromBones who's a bit detached from her emotions to say the least. Peopleare comparing Rizzoli & Isles to Bones and it's because they have a lotin common though Rizzoli & Isles had a much better first episode thanBones did and just because this show isn't one of HBO's productions anddoesn't have people fornicating on every corner doesn't make it bad. It's just something you can watch with your kids or maybe even brotheror sister without feeling awkward because of what's happening on thescreen and actually enjoying a show. I definitely recommend this.

cannot suspend my disbelief.....

This is a buddy show and most buddy shows are guy things. The subtextwhich is supposed to be funny is just not working because the chemistryisn't there (think Xena and Gabrielle..the tension was so thick youcould cut it with a knife) I love the idea of Rizzoli & Isles but Isimply cannot suspend my disbelief.Angie Harmon is drop-dead gorgeous.I am supposed to think that she is awkward and inept in socialsituations? That she does not know how to dress or doesn't shave herlegs?? C'mon..I mean really? She may have been an awkward teenager butbelieve me, she's grown out of it. I wish they had used the "MissCongeniality", ugly duckling storyline If it worked for Sandra Bullock,it would have worked for Angie Harmon and been much more entertaining.

Funny, sexy and smart!

This is my first review but I felt the urge to write something aboutRizzoli & Isles, just to let everyone know how good it is. I waspleasantly surprised when I first started watching this show. I wasexpecting another rather dull serious cop show, lacking a lead malecharacter. BOY HOW WRONG WAS I?!I cannot fault the show in any way, its hilarious in parts, never haveI watched anything and found myself smiling from start to finishbefore. The chemistry between Jane and Maura is amazing, you can tellthe ladies are actually enjoying what they are doing and the friendlybanter between the two is what makes the show. I'm not sure if it issupposed to be this funny, but they do it so well! Its not all comedy, there is some crime and murders involved which iswhat the show is about. I am a long time fan of CSI and this showoutranks it with ease. I could not go back now.The only think I would change would be the length of the episodes andthe amount of shows in each Season. I WANT MORE!

One of my top ten favorite shows

This show is absolutely amazing. I'm glad I discovered it one day whenI was randomly flipping through the channels. I've always enjoyedwatching cop shows, or forensic shows in general. I'm a complete suckerfor CSI Las Vegas, Law and Order SUV, Castle and Bones. Now Rizzoli andIsles is up there as well.As most shows go you always see a lot of the partners being male andfemale, and normally their fraught with sexual tension. Yet with thisshow you get two down to earth, great and strong woman who are the bestof friends. I love that, each character is different and amusing intheir own way. The show has laughter and pain. It even has depth. Youdon't always know what's going to happen and it keeps me on my toes. Ilove trying to figure out who the killer is.I'm excited for season 2 and already watching. Can't wait for more.

Horrible!

This show is only suitable for people who haven't read the books andare waiting for the fall season for real TV. Harmon is too tall and tooattractive to be Rizzoli and she runs around the set like a maniac.Alexander is nothing like Isles who has black hair and is cool andcerebral. I've read 5 of the books and never once did she diagnose adate's malady or giggle at something inappropriate or shop for shoes. The idea that they end every day swilling beer is absurd. I hate whenTV takes great characters and turns them into pablum. All of this mightbe forgivable except that the writing was awful and the plot wasunbelievable. Bringing back the Boston Strangler in episode #2? Allthat tells me is these writers have nothing else going for them.

Booth and Brennen not Cagney and Lacey

I enjoyed the first season though I didn't expect to from the trailers. This show is a weaker version of "Bones", which I enjoy.Rizzoli, is the street cop. She's unsophisticated but good at her job, like Sealy Booth in Bones.Annie Harmon seems to have more fun with this role than she did playingAssistant District Attorney Abbie Carmichael in Law and Order.Sasha Alexander (Kate Todd in NCIS) plays Isles as a less eccentricversion of Temperance "Bones" Brennen. The writers do seem to be stealing ideas from Bones.Spoiler. For instance Isles is an adopted child who's father is apowerful wanted fugitive.Sound familiar? No doubt there will be more borrowing in season two.Nevermind the lazy writers, this is a fun show and worth a watch.

It Seems To Be Improving

I should state up front that I would happily watch Angie Harmon doinghousework all day. That is probably the only reason I got to the end ofthe first episode and lined up for the second. I am glad I did as it isa much better effort. It is hard to find fault with any show with acast as strong as this. With guest spots from Brian Dennehy, ChazPalminteri and Donny Wahlberg, along with the strong regular cast thatincludes Lorraine Bracco, it is easy to overlook some of the show'sshortcomings.Angie Harmon's character is pretty much a straight re-run of her outingin Women's Murder Club, which I thought was a more interesting showthan this. Sasha Alexander's Medical Examiner is very clichéd but Sashaherself is also very watchable, so she manages to pull it offreasonably well. There are many better US drama shows than this - The Mentalist,Criminal Minds and Burn Notice come to mind - but it holds it's ownagainst garbage like the CSIs and, even if the writing is no good, itis about the only show you can still enjoy with the sound muted. It isbeing shown in the non-ratings period here in Australia, which isprobably where it belongs.

A good crime cop drama of opposites attract in partners terms yet it blends to be good chemistry!

TNT has done it again they have once again produced another hit seriesas they have good luck with crime dramas. This one set in Boston"Rizzoli and Isles" involves the cases of crime and murder in Bostonand you have daylight and dark working together on the cases. Firstenter the tough and by the book seasoned detective Jane Rizzoli(playedwonderful by the sexy and exotic beauty Angie Harmon)as Jane alwaysquestions the clues and evidence found at the scene, and to makematters more interesting is the educated and witty crime scene medicalexaminer Dr. Maura Isles(Sasha Alexander)who looks inside the deadbodies for more answers. And both differ on opinions and ways ofsolving cases still the work ethic and chemistry blends well to form agood crime fighting solving team. Typically the cases they crack aregruesome and cold blooded murders the kind of cases you've seen on TVinvolving lust killers and serial murders. Usually always in the endthe hard work leads to twist and turns with the bad guy being caught.Good supporting turns are given from Bruce McGill as a supervisingdetective Vince Korsak and veteran Lorraine Bracco as Jane'soverprotected and loving mom Angela. Overall this is a good crime dramaseries that entertains and it makes you think as most of the gruesomecases take twist then they are solved. And plus it's a nice treat tosee the beautiful Angie Harmon at work again especially in a lead role.So check out "Rizzoli and Isles" if you haven't.

Jane Maura

I do hope that the series based on author Tess Gerritsen's charactersof Boston Homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner MauraIsles keeps going. I think that's a sure bet if the quality of episodeskeeps up from what I've seen. It's nice to see the return of Angie Harmon to series television. Whenshe was on Law And Order she was by far my favorite second chairAssistant District Attorney to Sam Waterston. The two women so oppositein temperament and background work well together to solve crime everyweek, though due to the her job Harmon seems to take the lead. Maybewe'll see more of Sasha Alexander as Maura Isles as things progress.Probably due to her broad educational background Alexander's characterhas no discernible Boston accent. Why Harmon's character doesn't is amystery. She sounds the same as she did on Law And Order, a new ADAwhose previous employment on that show was in the Harris County DA'soffice in Texas where Harmon is from. Maybe she'll work some hard 'A'sinto her speech patterns in future episodes. Right now the only one inthe cast who sounds like Boston is Donnie Wahlberg as her lieutenantand that's where he's from. The two leads are flushed full dimensional characters and I'm surewe'll see more dimensions as time goes on. TNT has a winner here, Ihope the TV watching public thinks so too.

Yes!

R&I does an excellent job of incorporating comedy and mystery togetherin a grand mix of a series. It is not so intense that the audienceunknowingly stresses because of it, but at the same time, it has gotenough suspense to qualify for a crime drama. Instead of being anotherdark, serious, gloomy CSI, R&I is a harmless, light-hearted show that,as suggested by the title, centers around the lives of two witty, intelligent women that go by the names of Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles. The noticeable pattern is that each episode begins with a questionableclip, which foreshadows the homicide investigation team's call to thescene. It is then followed by the upbeat, heroic opening, and thecurious process of solving the murder case: it relieves the mind to seeall cases solved by the end. Not only that, the little jokes lighten upthe mood, and the background music is a driving force that inspires, not depresses, the viewers. Because of the nature of the central characters - they are two powerfulwomen - the show tends to be directed towards a feminine audience. Icannot ensure that the TV series is an agreeable adaptation of thenovels; however, if I were to speak of only the show, I would say thatthe characters are portrayed superbly and that the director - alongwith the actors, the writers, and the rest of the staff - deservesapplause.

Derivative, Inane, and All-Around Awful

The show's marketing looked exceptional, and I was excited to watch anepisode. Turns out I couldn't even make it through one, and I triedthree different times. The show "borrows" a lot of elements from a show I really did like,"Crossing Jordan". These elements include the Celtic-inspired openingtheme, the setting in Boston, and a somewhat belligerent female MedicalExaminer who works with a police detective to help solve unusual, engaging crimes. Angie Harmon bears a striking similarity to JillHennessy. When you start to see the overwhelmingly-derivativesimilarities, it's almost insulting. The show also tries to use a lot of "Bones"-like casting and dialogue -relying on Isles' socially awkward, overly technical explanations, yetlacking the craft, intelligence, and endearing nature of TemperanceBrennan on "Bones". The "police" side of the equation, played by AngieHarmon as Rizzoli, is equally artless. The characters seem to conveylittle emotion or depth, reciting lines and awkward one-liners but in away that doesn't seem to make you more attracted to them or charmed bytheir ways. However, unlike "Crossing Jordan" and "Bones", the main characters aresimply unlikable. They are obnoxious, hateful, and know-it-alls. Theattempts at Isles' overly technical, socially awkward explanations areNOT endearing, they're frustrating. She's clearly trying too hard. Theyact like two know-it-alls, and yet their dialogue rarely gets beyondextremely basic medical and forensic terminology. The season 2 finale, which I just watched, saw a know-it-all Islesstates early in the episode that a piece of equipment "measuresR.E.M.", and then pausing and smugly clarifying: "Rapid Eye Movement."Do they really question our intelligence that much? Are we supposed tobe convinced by characters' expertise who can't even handle that kindof basic terminology? And if so, why wouldn't the character say themore common terminology and then explain? Bungling dialogue like thispaints the characters as smug and elitist, and does nothing to advancethe character development or make you more interested in the"chemistry" that so many have alluded to.Beyond that, the ways in which the information is presented aremaddening. It's obnoxious how the overly-basic suggestions by secondarycharacters are used to help seal the characters' reasoning. It's apoorly-done procedural, and lacks the artfulness of something like "Lawand Order" or, honestly, most shows in the genre. This show, inparticular, seems to cater to a less-informed audience and the writersseem not to have the same understanding of those of much morewell-reviewed crime programs. Both characters come across as abusive and hateful, and with anunjustified anger and arrogance that presses everyone's ability tosuspend disbelief. The bottom line: I'm not interested in the "chemistry" between twoone-dimensional, unlikable characters. I'm not interested in theirblundering, uninformed mishaps, and don't appreciate drama based onwrongheaded characters making easily avoidable mistakes.I enjoy this genre of television. I've actively followed Bones,Crossing Jordan, The Wire, Dexter, and Criminal Minds. On thenon-fiction side, I've been fascinated by Forensic Files and AmericanJustice for years. Nothing compares to a well-done,scientifically-based detective show. Unfortunately, Rizzoli and Islesis not that, and seems to be a re-hashing of previously exploredterritory that contributes nothing new or exceptional to the televisionlandscape. Avoid this show, and watch the others I mentioned earlier inthis paragraph instead.

Great beginnings - look forward to more have bought the books!

I must admit, I'm a fan of Harmon. Ever since her no-nonsense approachto law in L&O, I've been a fan. I enjoy seeing the contrast of her in arole that is similar to but unlike ADA Carmichael. She is once again ano-nonsense non-drama queen who wasn't too proud to admit fear to aclose friend. She's plays a very good tough cop, a lot like L&OCriminal Intent, very little emotion and totally in control. I'm notfamiliar with Sasha Alexander, but enjoyed seeing a smart, attractiveMed Examiner who has a feminine side. Very smart combination and Ireally appreciated avoiding the cliché-ic ending of prince charmingsaving the damsel in distress. Thank you for showing that a woman canget herself out of tough situations. This proved that she really didwear the shield, not got it b/c she was pretty.

Cant decide.

I am a huge fan of Tess Gerritsens books, Shes an amazing writer and ireally get into her stories. However, the show is nothing like thebooks at all, I know it's based on the books and not actually about thebooks but what happened to Mauras killer mother and dead twin sister? And Janes parents splitting up? And the priest? I think the show alonecould be alright by itself, but i wish they would stop comparing thebooks, it's 2 different stories, the characters are no where near thesame, In fact Jane & Maura barely know much about each other, They justwork together on a lot of cases, It's mentioned in the books severaltimes, they don't hang out outside of work very often at all, yet inthe show they are best friends?I still haven't come to a conclusion if i like this, as i am drawn inby it, but I'm not sure if that's just because I'm trying to like itbecause i love the original characters

Exciting so far, needs to settle into its own groove a bit...

So far, I'm really enjoying this show. It's an exciting crime show andnice to see two strong female leads that have good working chemistry. Ihave high hopes for this show and hope someday that it will become amain season 22 episode show rather than a summer series. My one complaint is that Maura Isles personality quirks really startedout like (early) Temperance Brennan on Bones. I hope that the characterdevelops a solid personality in her own right rather than feeling likea dim copy of Temperance Brennan, and this did seem to be much lesspronounced by the end of the season. It's just not realistic whensomeone is quite that clueless about social interaction, especiallywhen it's so much like another character.

Awesome!!

As a female lawyer who truly loves the law and everything that has todo with crime and punishment and as a self-proclaimed connoisseur ofcrime TV, I must write my first review and express how overjoyed I amwith this show! I'm already anxious to buy the show on DVD, and I'veonly seen one episode. If the rest of this season is anything comparedto the first episode I know that I can look forward to many moreseasons. Rizzoli (Harmon) is believable as the tough girl who honorsthe law (yet is able to maintain her incredible sexiness at the sametime.) And Isles (Sasha) is the fashionista who crazily enough lovesher often disgusting job as the medical examiner. (She also brings alot of the subtle humor with her character's attitude.) I identifiedwith both main characters, found there was enough excitement to keep myattention throughout the entire episode(and enough humor...but not toomuch) and was left with heightened anticipation until next week.
