MY GRADE B.
Tom Selleck, sporting not only his Magnum PI mustache but also a beard, plays an American who comes to Australia seeking a job based on his sharpshooting skills. The job turns out to be more than expected which turns him against his employer. Alan Rickman plays the employer rancher and Laura San Giacomo plays Crazy Cora, a prostitute turned lady. STORY/PLOTTING: B; CHARACTERS/DIALOGUE: B to B plus; SCENERY: B minus to B; ACTION SCENES: B minus to B; OVERALL GRADE: B; WHEN WATCHED: 2010 (streamed).

Tom Sellecks best movie!
It is unbelievable that Amazon mentions Alan Rickman as the star of this movie and DOESN'T EVEN MENTION TOM SELLECK! This is Selleck's best performance and it is a great story. Rickman, as always, is also great, but not the star.

good Tom Seleck
Tom Seleck is great in this movie as he always is. He always brings his own humor with him even if it's to Austalia.

Quigley ... not a bad movie
It was sort of a Revisionist Western. It was set in the Colonial period of Australia . The best things were* the cinematography of Australia's glorious landscape. Most of it shot around Alice Springs where I lived the a while.* adequate performances from the 3 main characters ..Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo currently seen as Maya Gallo in TV show "Just Shoot Me", and Alan Rickman .... and it has dingo's too"Quigley" is a reasonable action movie which revealed the truth of our shameful past.

stellar service
This review is from: Quigley Down Under [VHS] (VHS Tape) My family loves this movie and quotes from it often and extensively. When I found a cousin had not seen it I ordered it for her right away. It came quickly and in great condition as advertised. This seller is the best I've ever dealt with through Amazon. I will always check this seller on future orders.

Great comedy
You will be laughing your tail off. Here is why:Quigley (Tom Selleck), investigates a report on human right violations by the English settlers against the aboriginal population of Austria. (Obviously, Quigley had improved the inter-racial relationships in his native Wyoming to perfection: black, indians, white, all live in equality, peace and harmony, and now he is on a mission to do the same in Austria)Quigley quickly discovers the horrible truth, and being a superman, supperherro, suppersshooter, quickly brings justice. All bad guys (english, irish, scotch) are punished, aboriginals are free. No more slavery, genocide, collonialism and exploitation.A blond Texan woman shares his passion and adopts a little black baby; the baby fell from a 200 feet cliff and survived!Have fun!Ernesto Ce Gevara

Let Australia kill him.
The Australian countryside is gorgeous, and Tom Selleck is perfectly cast as the cowboy, circa 1880 or thereabouts. Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, a Sharps rifle sharpshooter who answers an ad to wipe out an infestation of pesky dingoes on an immense - and I mean immense - Australian ranch. Quigley, you see, is "the finest long-distance marksman in the world," and land baron Elliott Marston (Alan Rickman), lord of the Marston Waters Ranch and aficionado of pulp tales of American gunslingers is hiring the best. Quigley proves his prowess by splintering a perfectly good wooden bucket from a great distance. Trouble is, Marston wants a long-distance sharpshooter to eliminate men, not dogs - Australian aboriginals, to be exact. Which troubles our hero, who spends the first act touring the countryside, seeing his first flock of kangaroos, getting hired, beaten and left for dead, all with time to spare before the opening of act two. Selleck is always good as a classic cowboy hero - `classic' in this sense meaning rugged, laconic, deadly proficient with his weapon of choice, and endowed with a true moral compass. If something is wrong he'll put it right, or die in the trying. Rickman makes a worthy adversary - an outback psychopath with a dime novel education and twisted dreams of being Wild Bill Hickok - or at least of drawing down with him in a more or less - morely less - fair fight. Australian-born director Simon Wincer, who released the terrific mini-series `Lonesome Dove' in 1989, the year before QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER hit the theaters, stresses authenticity and a low-key approach to characters. Add to that a vibrant sense of action and this movie is halfway to the all-time classics shelf. Unfortunately, there's a love story.... Laura San Giacomo plays Crazy Cora, another American expatriate who stumbles into Quigley's arm early in the first act and hasn't enough grace to stumble out again. Look - westerns & romance can coexist peacefully, but it's always a tricky proposition. If Quigley's complete - we know him from a century of westerns, a direct descendent of John Wayne, Randolph Scott, and William S. Hart - Crazy Cora has a huge back-story to fitfully recount. Eventually we learn why she went `crazy,' and sense how Quigley might help her regain her sanity. In the meantime she does fill in as comedy relief while performing other various and sundry general sidekick duties, always welcome when you have a quiet hero to track. Still, the movie stuffs an awful lot of Crazy Cora down our throat, some of it indigestible, and it serves little purpose beyond making us impatient for the good stuff - Quigley vs. Marston. The treatment of the Australian aboriginals is respectfully two-dimensional. Since the early 1950s major westerns have grown increasingly leery of depicting native peoples as anything other than Earth Children and Noble Victims. It's an improvement, of sorts, over the Bloodthirsty Savage that ruled earlier, but it doesn't make them any more interesting. Or anything more than plot devices to accentuate the inhuman cruelty of Marston. Despite a few dry stretches and some questionable secondary characters, QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER is high quality entertainment.

Classic western (about as far west as one can get!)
I've watched this movie at least 15 times since it was made in 1990; it's one of my two favorite westerns (the other, Silverado, 1985), and when Amazon advertized it for $10.99, I had to buy it. It's a great depiction of 1870's life in a different country. Tom Selleck is great as Matthew Quigley, and Alan Rickman (Die Hard) is one of my favorite bad guys. If you like good westerns, you can't go wrong with this movie.

My Favorite Western
This review is from: Quigley Down Under (DVD) This just may be the best Tom Selleck movie ever. A great story that is enhanced by wonderful actors.

Tom Selleck at his best.
If you are a Tom Selleck fan you can't go wrong with this Western classic. Tom portrays Matthew Quigley, a dignified gunslinger who has grown weary of his sharpshooter reputation. While the plot is fairly simple it is rewarding to see Quigley do the right thing without a second thought. Such a charismatic role for Selleck. A good film for the entire family, as long as the kids are over 9 or 10.

Great Movie!
I'm not really sure if this falls in the "Western" genre, but I think it'spretty much the closest genre it would fit into. I've never really beeninto westerns, but there is something about this one. It's a really goodmovie!Tom Selleck does a great job as Matthew Quigley. There really isn't enoughI can say about Alan Rickman! He always plays the perfect antagonist! Maybe it's his voice, maybe it's the way he acts, I'm not sure, but all Iknow is that he is a great actor! Laura San Giacomo does a good job in thefilm too. Her character was a very strange one put in the film, but thereis a reason for her strangeness. She does a fine job in the filmtoo. The story in this film is really quite simple and nothing terriblycomplicated, but it's really good and has a good moral to it. If you're thetype of person that likes Westerns, then I would hope you would like thisone too. Not only is it a western, but it's got a good amount of comedy init too. Anyhow, I would definitely recommend seeing this film if youhaven't already. I hope that you like the film as much as I do. Thanks forreading,-Chris

An American marksman goes to the land down under for a job which turns out to be something he was not quite expecting.
"Quigley Down Under" is the story of an American marksman who takes ajob in the land down under, Australia, at the bequest of one of thelocal land barons. With his saddle and custom-made rifle in hand,Quigley lands in the land of Australia, gets entangled with one of thelocal "ladies in waiting", and ends up with a complete distaste for thereason he answered the want ad in the first place. Quigley played byTom Selleck, thought he was being hired to exterminate the localwildlife from the cattle ranch of Elliott Marston, deviously played byAlan Rickman. Marston makes it clear that Quigley's job is to hunt downand terminate the local natives of Australia, the aborigines, whom heconsiders a nuisance. That prospect sickens Quigley, he and Marstonhave a falling-out, and Quigley winds up on the Australian wild lands,beaten-up, no water, and a half-loco lady, who keeps calling him byanother name.Selleck is able to give the role a fantastic reason for watching thefilm over several times, because it seems to fit him so well. He is amoral individual, who will do the job called for, as long as it is inno way a compromise of his own personal principles. Marston representsthe complete opposite of those guidelines, and the two eventually endup in the confrontation that stamps movies of the western genre.Selleck and Rickman do very well in their parts, and Laura San Giacomoplays the loco lady that Quigley has to take under his arm, as if hedoes not have enough to deal with. The lands photograph well, and thetone is a film worth having in a person's own collection. Enjoy thetrip to the Land Down Under, Mate!

Excellent Cinematography
Great mostly due to the incredible scenery, Tom Selleck stands up withveteran films actors like Alan Rickman and Laura San Giacomo and holdshis own. His Magnum PI Style mixed with a small amount of "RobertMitchum competence" gives him a bit of flair, and contrast to theAustralian actors. The feel of this film is that of a big-time Hollywood western, this isabout as far west as one can get. Along with the familiar horses andguns, there are also dingos and kangaroos. Instead of Native Americans, there are Native Australians, and there is as much of a parallel hereas there is with the western United States. Alan Rickman is thequintessential bloated bad-guy.The score by Basil Poledouris is very "Magnificent Sevenish" - You canhear strains of Quigly is Basil's other work, like Starship Troopers-Actually, a LOT of Quigly's themes were reproduced in StarshipTroopers, but this is why I liked Composers like Alfred HitchcocksBernard Herrman and Sergio Leone's Ennio Merricone. The director of Lonesome Dove Simon Wincer sells the story, written bynovelist John Hill...And all of Australia is the set.Favourite quote from the film is "Got no use for a Colt, never said Icouldn't use one". One very pleasant moment in the film is whereQuigley makes a very Clint-Eastwoodish/Josey Wales gesture by spittingon the ground- Watch for that.

An entertaining western.
Tom Selleck is very good as Matthew Quigley. It is refreshing to watch a movie without vulgar language and where the 'good' guy really is likeable.

A sentimental, unexpected western thriller - hows that for a quick pick!
This is the movie you want to watch if you don't like to watch theOscar awards. "Quigley" is at his best as a western sharpshooter with aheart. "Crazy Cora" is a diamond in the rough. Enough violence toovercome all that sentimentality without destroying the balance. There are Tom Selleck fans, like me, who need a dose of"good-guy-do-the-right-thing" every so often - without the spectaculareffects of 'Die Hard' and etc - to remind us of the innocence of theSaturday matinées and the tough experiences - and happy endings - ofour youth. All Tom Selleck movies fall into this category, but this one is specialthanks to Laura San Giacomo. For the open-minded unbelievers, the flickwould be great as part of a double feature - maybe with "Fargo" as #2on the bill. They have a lot in common.

One of the best movies Ive ever seen. What a nice surprise ! ! !
Found this movie just starting on the CMT channel and looked it up onthe database. First review I read said it was better than excellent so,although skeptical, I decided to watch it. I've always liked TomSellick and found this to be some of his best work. The story haspretty much everything you could want in a western; action,shoot-em-ups, great story line and casting and even romance and 'familyvalues' ! While that last item may not make the movie acceptable tofolks who hate guns, wear lots of skin piercings, vote democrat, anddon't bathe regularly ... most 'regular folks' will probably rank thismovie in the top 10 on their list. (For the others, there's alwaysBrokeback Mountain ...... )

The Actor with the Scottish Hat
Always enjoy the movie. Bought the tape, will probably buy the DVD. Whois the character actor with the Scottish feathered Hat. What's his realname. I keep thinking he's a retread "Rock Star" from the sixties. Likeone of those one hit wonder bands. BTW, shopped the internet for one ofthose Sharps Rifles. Those things price out at between $3,000 to$5,000.00. Man-oh-man,talking about sticker shock. But,probably worthevery darn penny. Have been a fan of Sellick's western's, starting withthe Sackett series etc.Right up there with 'The Duke', Eastwood, RobertDuvall and Sam Elliot. Etc. Finally got my wife to watch the movie, andpointed out how he stuck up for the Aboriginal's and "Crazy Cora' andwhy. Both just causes. She finally understood. She Likes Alan Rickman,as well, so do I. All excellent actors in the movie. But mostimportantly Will somebody PUHLEEEEZE !!!! solve the trivia quiz aboutthe guy in the Scottish Hat????????

Austrailia and the Wild West
This review is from: Quigley Down Under (DVD) This is not your usual cowboy movie but Tom Selleck makes a great sharp shooter. Alan Rickman does a great job as the despicable land owner. Laura San Giacomo was well cast and her role was memorable. The true message of this film was to not judge people by the color of their skin or their situation. This film had comedy and drama. I liked the movie when it came out and was delighted that it was on DVD.

Very Entertaining
This is without a doubt the best of Tom Sellecks career. It takesadvantage of all his acting skills. There is something for everybody inthis movie from light comedy to action. It is a shame Selleck didn't get more scripts of this caliber, he couldhave had a great movie career. This one stands above all the otherfilms he has done. He is more know for the Mangnum PI series than formovies, but this one was his starring role, all the way.Enjoy this one, you will find it to be time well spent. The film has afew plot holes but they are not anything that would annoy most viewers.165
