Storyline

Plot Summary:

Television reporter Angela Vidal and her cameraman are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units. They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, internet, televisions and cell phone access have been cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew

Not too bad

Overall, it was a pretty good movie. It entertained me, and it hadzombie-like people (well, it was actually a virus, like in 28days/weeks later- but still, that concept of zombies is alwaysawesome). The camera was pretty shaky at times, which was a bit much, and at the end, Jennifer Carpenter, as hot as she is, got prettyannoying with the screams, crying, and hyperventilating. Kind of wishshe would have shut up near the end.Pretty good jumps, some decent little gore parts- so overall, not a badmovie. I would probably buy it on DVD. Obviously no movie is perfect, and everyone will have their own views, likes, and dislikes. If youlook at all the other past horror movies, this one isn't too shabby.Look, a movie entertains you, then it did it's job. That's why it'scalled "entertainment." Just because some jackass on the street says itsucks, and just because it didn't get many "stars," doesn't mean it's abad movie. Plenty of "bad movies" have entertained the hell out of me-in turn, making them good movies- to me, at least.

Yes, this movie SHOULD BE QUARANTINED

It's a rip-off of "28 days later" and "Cloverfield". If you've seen these movies, you won't find anything new in Quarantine.Oh, there's a difference. The acting is not as good as that of those two. There's a lot of killing but there's no suspense or horror.

Garbage

I seriously don't understand why so many people are saying how goodthis movie is. The only positive thing I can say about this, is that itdid have some thrills here and there and the acting wasn't that bad,but a few thrills simply isn't enough to save this film from it'sterrible flaws and annoying characters. The camera work was simplyhorrible. Half of the time I couldn't see what was going on because itwas so shaky. The characters were very annoying and they weren't verysmart either. Ordinarily you would care enough for them that you wouldwant the characters to and make it out alive. However, that's not thecase here. Almost every character set themselves up to bekilled/infected. Instead of using the cops gun, they'd use things suchas, a sledgehammer, the camera, etc. Another thing that just didn'tmake sense was that instead of just killing the zombies on sight theywould take their chances trying to help them and risk getting bitten, very ridiculous. This movie is a complete waste and offers little to noentertainment value whatsoever and fails miserably at everything ittries to achieve.

Nothing special

I am A big horror film fan, it is my favorate film genre. Quarantine looked cool so I gave it A rent, sadly I was disappointed. This movie has some really bad acting and dialogue, Jay Hernandez gives the films only good acting. There is no character development so you never really care much about the characters fate. One thing the movie does right is the senes of tension. The way quarantine is filmed is great. Its form a news camramens point of veiw or his camra really. The shots that show the outside world are great because they set up the feeling of tension. It says the characters are not supposed to get out, its them against the world. This feeling of tension and unease nerly sells this film, but in the end it falls flat. In the end you don't care its a forgetable film. It builds A great atmsopher but does nothing with it. This film is A rentail or a skip it.The blu-ray is great it has a great picture and sound. I did not watch the extras as I really did not care to much for this film.

Unnecessary

A group of people are trapped in a building as a deadly virus spreadsamong them. That's all I have to say about that.I watched the original Spanish version of this story, titled RECwithout knowing a single thing about it. It was one of the mostsatisfying movie experiences I've ever had. Unfortunately, you can'trelive something like that.Quarantine is extremely faithful to REC--so much so that there reallyweren't any surprises for those who saw the original. In some ways, Iappreciated the faithfulness--it looked like they could have been inthe EXACT same apartment building as the Spanish-set story. On theother hand, watching this was pretty much just like re-watching RECwith different actors. I prefer the girl in REC. Much cuter. If you go in fresh, I imagine this movie could be just as exhilaratingas my first experience with REC--it builds the same way, has prettymuch all the same surprises. It really is an unusual occurrence that aHollywood remake doesn't suck the greatness out of well-done original. At the same time, Quarantine doesn't really add anything new. It'spretty much just the same. And why would you need two of the same?

Good, but a shot-by-shot remake of the Spanish REC

A film team led by reporter Angela Vidale [Jennifer Carpenter] follows a fire crew for the night as part of a documentary for a light news show. When they get a call out, it's not to a fire, but a woman in distress. So begins a night of terror; the woman, and many other residents of the apartment building are infected with a virus that acts like rabies, but develops much faster. The infected foam at the mouth and are incredibly aggressive. As the night progresses, and the infection explodes, the film team must fight off the infected monsters to survive. What makes Quarantine interesting is that it is shot entirely from the viewpoint of the cameraman, Scott [Steve Harris]. It would be quite inventive if it were not a shot-for-shot remake of the Spanish film [REC].Still, well worth seeing, but I'd advise seeing [REC] first.

The downside is that for the final half-hour the camera shakes so badly I started suffering from motion sickness.

A much better spin on the hand held all real Horror Genre

I wanted to see Quarantine from the moment I saw the trailers. I mean Iwatch almost anything but I love horror and I love films that focus thetension on isolation and Quarantine definitely does that. The story isnot really character driven but rather driven by the story and themystery of what is happening. The decision to film it using the handheld camera technique that other films have used actually worked reallywell for the film. Previously Cloverfield used this method to decentsuccess and classic Horror like the original Blair Witch film reallyhoned the technique. The key is that it has to really feed theatmosphere and actually make sense to the story and Quarantine has allof that going for it. Unlike Cloverfield the camera is kept relativelysteady and clear so it isn't disorientating. Apparently I feel prettystrongly about Asian/European horror films being made intoEnglish...but in a positive way. I love The Ring and it's sequel, andThe Grudge was solid. Quarantine is part zombie flick, part horrorblood bath, part isolated thriller but anyone who likes any of thesegenre's can't possibly be disappointed with this.Jennifer Carpenter takes the roll of scream queen and does a great job.Sometimes it feels like perhaps she might be over acting but she pullsof terror really disturbingly well. She's a decently strong characterand because of the nature of the monster doesn't really get to fightback but she is still a terrific lead character. Steve Harris is hercamera man who obviously doesn't get a lot of time in front of thecamera that he is in charge of...if any time...but he still plays adecent role with his voice and action and him and Carpenter have decentchemistry which is pretty impressive given they don't show any actualscreen time together. The rest of the cast is great, I certainly don'tmean to take anything away from anyone but they are all victims plainand straight forward so they get less than five minutes to establishdecent characters only to be picked off in horrible ways. There isstill some strong actors in these small roles including Jay Hernandez,Johnathon Schaech and Rade Serbedzija (terrific character actor.) Noone really stands out unfortunately because this is all about thestory.Relative newcomer John Erick Dowdle co-wrote and directed the film. Hecertainly has a decent eye for horror or thriller and knows how toreally get the spirit of the film in motion. The gore is awesome andactually gives you some extremely disturbing images that aren't run ofthe mill for the horror genre. Considering Quarantine had a very lowbudget I think they did a truly terrific job at really making itwatchable with edge of your seat thrills and a really great story. Theycould serialize it and might considering the reasonable success of thefilm but I don't think it would be a good idea as much as I lovesequels. One thing is for sure I definitely am looking forward toseeing the Spanish original film .REC Certainly worth checking out!!8.5/10

My advice - stay home

Please-save your money and stay home! This was absolutely the WORSTmovie I've seen since the Blair Witch Project. Hey! No wonder...italmost WAS the Blair Witch Project all over again. Just indoors. If youliked Blair Witch, you'll love this movie. Done from the perspective ofthe cameraman, it follows a reporter who is supposed to be following acouple of firemen for the day. Once inside a building, the entire placeis placed on knockdown. Then you're subjected to an hour of repetitiveboredom. Nine people walked out of the theater, and now I wish I haddone the same. Let me just say this, if you want to know how the movieends, watch the trailer (and remember The Blair Witch Project). Sameending.

Excellent Movie

Quarantine was a surprisingly good film. In fact, one of the better horror movies I've seen in the last few years --- simple, but effective storytelling and solid performances across the board. It's made in a documentary style, with no musical score, which gives it a more realistic feel. If you enjoyed the Blair Witch Project or the Descent, you'll love it.

Decent Horror Marred by Shakey-Cam

I wish people in Hollywood would stop making Shakey-Cam movies. Its really not that clever. This would have been a pretty good horror movie if not for the choice to film it using technology from 1950's. Quarantine is a zombie film; fast zombies, not slow ones. A reporter and her cameraman get trapped in an apartment filled with people infected with some zombie virus. Pretty standard stuff here, the problem is that Shakey-Cam is used here to be trendy. "Help, I'm being attacked by a zombie" an actress will scream. The cameraman puts down the camcorder and *BAM*, the action stops. STOPS!Another decent horror film ruined by Shakey-Cam.

The Spanish did it all a little better but Carpenter rivals her European counterpart in hollering blue murder.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME

I refuse to watch this, the original is really good enough and there is no reason to give a damn about this. Fortunally, I'm not the only one, I hope this pale copy disapear in limbo... the lack of creative ideas in hollywood and the lazy habit not to even try to watch a movie wich is not spoke in english must be the only reasons for this total waste of time and money... GO WATCH THE ORIGINAL AND SUPPORT THE REAL CREATORS OF THIS GENUINE GREAT NEW HORROR MOVIE.

scariest movie Ive seen in a long time

This is the scariest movie I've seen in a long time! It's the firstmovie I've been compelled to comment on (I created my IMDb profile tocomment on THIS movie). I just watched it on DVD at home, I drenchedmyself with lukewarm coffee, my heart rate is still up, and I'm lookingat my dog sideways.I was planning to veg out with a typical B horror flick, and I waspleasantly surprised that it was immediately entertaining and wellwritten. The movie starts with a reporter and her cameraman shadowing acrew of firemen, and the beginning scene is witty and fun ... until, ofcourse, the call to action. The premise of a mutated rabies virus IS more believable thandead-reanimated zombies, but there are inevitable (even glaring) gapsin the logic. Suspend the disbelief, ignore the gaps, and enjoy thescare ... pause the video before taking a drink or else use asippy-cup!This film is absolutely terrifying! I really want to see REC becauseone of the main criticisms of this movie is that it's an inferiorremake of REC.

Realistic, intense, not for kids, frightening, this movie stays with you!

I walked into this movie knowing it was an American remake of a Spanishfilm called "REC." I walked out of the movie stunned and thinking,"Whoa." "Quarantine" is an unsettling film that is filled with what Icall "that must suck" situations. For example, there is a scene in thefilm where a group of four people encounter an infected dog by anelevator. The elevator doors open and a drunk man staggers out, only tofind that the dog is coming after him. The man rushes back into theelevator, trying desperately to close the doors before it's too late.Unfortunately for him, it was too late and the dog wound up in thesealed elevator with the man. Before the doors close, however, you canclearly see the canine tearing away at the man's face. You can alsohear the sounds of crunching. Now, about the violent content. The movieis not rated R for gore, because it doesn't really need to be. It wouldonly take about a couple more bloody deaths to earn a gore-warning inthe rating. Without trying to give too much away, the usual stuff is inthe movie. Infected maniacs biting at people's necks while thesoon-to-be-infected scream bloody-murder. The editors did a good jobadding in gruesome sound effects to go along with the gruesome scenes. However, some of the scary scenes in this film, too me, didn't quitemake me jump. There was just something about the scenes that seemedlike they were supposed to be scary, but not really. However, as themovie goes on, it gets more scary, gruesome, and suspenseful. Theinfected people have the characteristics of zombies, but they didn'tcome back from the dead. One of the victims trapped inside theapartment complex, a veterinarian, said that the infected people showedthe same symptoms a rabid person would. However, this infection is kindof like a super-rabies. (Meaning it doesn't take long for the infectionto spread.) Also, to go along with rabies, the infected have a knackfor viciously killing/infecting others. These are the type that movequick, (run) like the ones in "28 Days Later." Their unearthly shriekswill send shivers down your spine. (Parents-I wouldn't recommendallowing your young children to see this movie. The result may be themcrying at the utter fright that's packed into this movie.) The tone ofthe movie is dark. People quarantined in an apartment complex withGod-knows-what scurrying around and gruesomely killing them. The causefor this unknown "outbreak" is even darker. The super of the apartment (before he gets his face ripped to shreds)said that there was a man from Boston renting the penthouse at the topof the apartment which he hadn't seen for months. When the last twosurvivors make their way up there looking for a way out, they encountercaged infected rats and newspaper clippings on the wall. All of theclippings said something about doomsday and doomsday cults. Also aboutan "Armaggedon Virus." The camera man finds a tape recorder and playsthe tape in it. All you can hear sounds something like satanic chants.(Like those hidden messages when you play a record back words.) So, asthe viewer, I believe that you're supposed to assume that the man fromBoston was creating a doomsday virus to honor his cult.Oh, and for the record, this movie is like an exact remake of theSpanish film. (Meaning it's a scene-by-scene remake.) If you've seen"REC," in a way you've also scene "Quarantine."

This is a good, intense, well-made, fun movie. Ignore snobs and haters.

A lot of people just want to show off their snobbery by dissing this film. This movie has a good coherent plot, is very well executed, good pacing, and has the extremely talented Jennifer Carpenter. Its kindof a mix between 28 Days Later and Cloverfield - if you liked either of those movies I think you will like this one. Look, I enjoy intelligent films; I love Sherman's March, The Visitor, Punch Drunk Love, etc. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy and appreciate a thrilling movie like this one. Watch it!

Suspenseful but ordinary

I had high hopes for this movie when I saw the trailer and felt thatthe movie delivered what it intended to.The movie itself takes place from the point of view from a cameramannamed Scott. The cameraman is shooting a take on what firemen gothrough on an ordinary day when their ordinary day turns intoextraordinary. They get a call to an apartment complex and get lockedinside with what appear to be zombie like creatures. It is a movie that I would place in between the 28 days/weeks moviesand Cloverfield. It has suspense (will be great on DVD w/surround soundin the future) but some of the characters lack common sense. The factthat the movie is shot from one camera had some people disappointedsince it didn't involve too much of a story as to what is being"quarantined", but that is to be expected.I would say that the movie could have been a heck of a lot better witha solid story and a bigger climax/plot. It is worth your time to watch, but if you don't like shaky cameras like Cloverfield and BlairwitchProject, then I wouldn't watch it.

Blair Witch Project meets Night of the Living Dead

Hey, as we slip towards socialism, you could do worse than renting this pseudo/thriller with the B cast. OK, so I'm too tough, I know. But look, dude, after the 8th time someone orders the camera guy to stop filming...and, duh, of course..they, you know..keep on filming? And the old dude...same creepy old dude from Eyes Wide Shut. I dunno..I suppose I got some scares early on..but it just dragged on and was ultimately somewhat predictable. Look, the movie is sick and you don't need it. But still, for cheap thrills, you can do much worse.

A Pretty good Remake to Rec

Quarantine is a remake of the Spanish film [ Rec]. The movie starts offwhere a news reporter Angela Vidal is sent to the fire department tofollow them around. Then problems happen when the fire department issent to a 911 call at a apartment building. They soon become trapped inthe building when the building becomes quarantined. I found the movieto be good. But I will say the movie is in no way scary. IF you are nota fan of movies like The Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield then thisis not the movie for you. The movie is not a zombie movie. The peopleare infected with some kind of virus. Some of the cast in the movieinclude Jennifer Carpenter, Jay Hernandez, Columbus Short, RadeSerbedzija, and Greg Germann.

Muhammad Ali as Cameraman

"Quarantine" borrows heavily from 2007's "Paranormal Activity" and George Romero's "Night of the Living" both in concept, design, and specific scene sequences. While it succeeds in equalling or surpassing neither of them, this is not a terrible movie. I haven't seen the original so I can't say if it's better or worse, but as with "Pulse", I'm inclined to take a shot in the dark and guess the director went softer and made the content a little more mainstream.Jennifer Carpenter has a great pair of tubes. She can scream with the best of them and I wouldn't want antique plates or old people with heart conditions around her when she gets upset. While it was just annoying in "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", it is used to excellent effect in this grisly, relentlessly nightmarish, and actually unpredictable tale of an apartment filled with tenants--one of whom has decided to unleash a rabid/bubonic plague upon the nation, I guess--who are slowly falling victim to a disease which turns strong firemen into frothing cannibals and little children into Mommy Haters. (Of course, the guy who owns the apartment is a foreigner, and as Hollywood always has to imply in some way, they all just want us eating each other and causing mass chaos!)The build up of the movie is pretty slow and we're treated to watching Carpenter act like the bubbly, somewhat annoying actress she can be, schmoozing it with a bunch of firemen and wanting to advance her career as a local? newswoman by travelling with them into an inferno. She does, but I think the Empire State Building burning down would be preferable for most people compared to what actually happens. The incident with the first "sick" old woman drooling blood and frothing, responding in a somewhat human and somewhat non human way at the attempts of firefighters/cops to calm her down and then taking a big juicy bite of one of LAPD's "finest", you get a real jump. The terror of the film isn't so much in all the bloodletting but in the tension (who really DID get bit?) of who or who is not a "carrier". Romeo gets it pretty bad too, which I found gratifying, because he's one of the only people in the film who looked like he got handpicked from "Cold Case" or some Gap ad. The only unbelievable thing in the film is that the guy behind the camera keeps filming it. You can believe that in "PA" because it's just stationed there the whole time and in "Blair Witch" because they need to keep a record of what they're doing since they don't have a map, but not in this. Was this guy trained to be a professional boxer or did he take ballet? Is he going for the "Just In Case Super Nobel Peace Prize?" There are tons upon tons of once well intentioned tenants spitting their teeth out, growing what seem to be fangs and trying to bite everyone and he just dances away with the camera. (He even kills one of them with it, and it doesn't crack.) The ending could have been much better. Jennifer Carpenter gobbling the camera man would have been a REAL George Romero move, or vice versa. Instead what you see on the cover (yeah, brilliant idea, put the last scene of the movie on the cover and in the trailer?) Still, this is done believably and chillingly enough to warrant watching--the completely negative reviews are simply inaccurate. There are *scares* in this.
