Harry Potter in Orbit
I can't believe this junker is kicking at nearly 4 stars. Percy Jackson& the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is handily one of the dumbestmovies ever made. What's more disturbing than Percy Jackson & theOlympians: The Lightning Thief, one of the worst movies I've seen in along time, is that a considerable number of people on this site give ita whopping 5 stars. Look folks, I'm a reasonable guy and a fairreviewer, but 5 stars?? This movie tries to be everything to everybody, cannibalizing plot lines and devices from the far better Harry Potter. The storyline makes no sense, the action is laughably paced, the actingis non-existent, the special effects were produced by special ed, andthe sets make a grand kingdom look like someone's rumpus room.Watch this movie if you are a fan of snail paced boredom and tedium andare prepared to lower your standards. The worst part is the overactivesoundtrack which desperately and constantly tries to convince youotherwise. There is no character development at all. They are all weak"cookie cutter" characters that the audience is expected to accept dueto vague similarities with other pop-culture characters (mainly HarryPotter). But they don't even succeed at that.It seems as if this film was meant to be a competition to "Harry Potterand the Prisoner of Azkaban: The IMAX Experience" or "Harry Potter andthe Half-Blood Prince", but they missed the mark by far. This would bea good movie to pop in if you had to go and clean your toilet or doyour laundry because those tasks are funner. It's even hard to make funof this movie.

how could they have messed this up?!
first of all, let me just say that i am a huge fan of the Percy Jacksonseries and this movie has pretty much ruined the last shred of respecti had for Chris Columbus. first on the list of things they screwed up,the characters,Percy looked like the clumsiest guy on earth, annabethlooked 30-somthing and was more annoying then the chick from "i amnumber four", and GROVER,dear lord what was he?! was he a some hipsteror the fresh prince of Bel-air?!second on the list THE STORY i meansure movie adaptions aren't meant to be the same thing as the book butthe movie went way off the edge. in the book Luke had a specific reasonfor betraying Percy but in the movie he just did because he wanted to,this also had no inclusion of ares or Clarisse or Dionysus, and moreimportantly this movie had more sponsors than the ads on a youtubevideo, i mean really?! he used an iPod to see Medusa! and Luke playscod on a ps3 i mean come on you sellouts! anyway in conclusion PercyJackson is a bad jumble of Hollywood trash and its as unnecessary as"little fockers" i highly advise you don't watch it.

I didnt read the books so...
The movie seemed pretty darn good to me. BUT, I know how it is when you read alllllll the books, hear a movie is coming out, you get all excited, see the movie, and it's like someone deflated all the air from you, you're so disappointed. So, I can relate. However, I did not read the books, so I enjoyed the movie :)

My sympathies to Mr. Riordan!
I managed to swallow Chris Columbus's changes to the first two Harry Potter movies, but the travesty he created from Riordan's lively, likeable "quest" novel I just can't ignore or forgive. All the great conversations, the truly funny situations, the believable universe, and the contemporarizing (is that a word???) of Greek mythology that made Riordan's novel (and the complete series) such great fun were completely ignored. What this movie is instead is a retread of every stereotypical "fallback" character, plot line, and dialogue ever presented in a movie for preadolescents. Obviously, the choice of young stars was to introduce two more attractive youngsters who have some potential--whether as actors or teen idols remains to be seen. But what was the point of making Grover an over-sexed satyr? Of making Persephone a hot mama? Of making the Lotus Hotel an older teen's idea of free drinks, free sex, free gambling? Of making the gods SO stereotypical of every bad B movie from the 1930s through the 1990s? I mean, Riordan created a great new consistent universe, and Columbus turned into a tired old grade-B (even C or D!)stereotype.Don't bother with the movie--get the audio books instead! Jesse Bernstein does a good job with the tone and feeling that Riordan created. (And yes, I'm an adult who's been reading and enjoying "quest" novels for many years. Riordan respected his audience, and created well and true for them; Columbus, on the other hand, "disrespected" Riordan's intent, and it shows.)

Different than the book, but just as enjoyable
I know i am late in doing this review, but i wanted to read the bookbefore judging the movie. This is a pretty good movie, and i wouldrecommend young people to see it. It has action, and suspense, and someof the age old lessons on friendship, respect, loyalty, overcomingdifferences and learning to see things a different way. Judging themovie by itself, i would grade it a B-.Now in comparisons with the book... As the old saying goes, you cantput everything in the book into a movie, but in this case i couldn'tsee why not? They change the movie around, quite different in the book. Now usually this is a VERY BAD, almost DEADLY thing to do...however inthis films case..IT WORKED. They kept the same feel of the book in themovie, and even though they are different, you don't lose that feelingof the movie not living up to the books expectations. This is kind oflike 2 sides of the same coin. If i have one complaint about the movie, that didn't have a seen from the book, it would be the omission ofAres. What i did like that they put in the movie and not the book, theygot rid of the character Clarisse, but set up the adventure quite wellwithout her. So judging the book to movie translation I would give it aB- as well.

Simple they made a whole new story
It's very simple to describe this movie: they created a whole newhistory, based on the world made by Rick Riordan. And there a lot ofplot holes in it, that even if you didn't read the book you can notice.I think they changed the book so the movie could become more"blockbuster" if you know what I mean. Like that scene where Percy useZeus's Lightning, he don't even TOUCH it on the book, but it's fun tosee sparkles and shiny stuff with cool sound as a background. I thinkthat's line of thinking Chris Columbus assumed while directing thismovie. It sucked so bad. The only thing good about it was the actors, great acting by most of them and also great famous choices like UmaThurman and Pierce Brosnan. Overall, the movie sucked, and I don'tthink they can make a sequel, hence all the characters are too old, compared to the book.

SOMEWHAT GOOD BUT NOT GOOD OR GREAT
Based on the popular novel series. They changed the ages of the main characters as well as some of the story angles which decreased my enjoyment of the picture. There are a lot of big names in this piece but I think what could have been a a great movie is only somewhat good at best. Too much focus on CGI and the like and not enough on plot points which connect fluidly. Most of the actors and actresses do a commendable job. In addition, this is a good starting point for kids learning about Greek Mythology. All said, the first book is better. Best supporting actress was Uma Thurman as medusa. She had the best line, too, when she told the main character, "Son of Poseidon. I used to date your Daddy." MY GRADE: B minus to B.

for the movie, for the BD-ROM release
This review is from: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Unfortunately the poor execution of 20th Century Fox has wasted my time. This is the 3rd Fox title that I have had to return for a replacement on BD-ROM. Me and the wife enjoyed the movie (luckily the DVD worked) but it's like they say "Once you go Black you never go back." Once you go Blu you never go back. Luckily Amazon has an excellent return policy for defective products, but I just got my player 2 months ago and have purchased 100+ titles replacing classics old and new that I had on DVD to Blu. Hopefully I won't have to go through much more of this crap. The Fox library of films includes some excellent titles that I can't wait to be released on BD, I hope they get their disc publisher sorted soon. I can't be the only one with these problems.

The Lightning Thief
This review is from: Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (DVD) Book is excellent for pre-teen readers. Lots of humor and of course adventure and excitement. Great if you are teaching a unit on Greek mythology as I am. The students LOVE the book, and many have read the other 4 in the series.

Very disappointing
This movie had the potential to be a star. Some very good actors, goodspecial effects and a great source of storyline - ancient mythology. But the incurable disease that seems to infect a great number ofHollywood productions has smitten this one as well. It is aimed at alevel well below the lowest common denominator and nearly every line ofscript spells out everything! It makes absolutely no demands on theaudience and ultimately leaves you unsatisfied. This is because thereis nothing in the movie that inspires or evokes emotion. The onlycharacter that has any development is the satyr and he is the onlysource of humour which is also in short supply. The viewer inevitablywill fail to develop any sympathy with any of the characters and comesaway with sympathy only for themselves; for having wasted their timewatching it.

A good story, but completely inaccurate
Alright, so when I saw this movie, I was expecting some little thingsto be changed. I was not expecting the entire plot to be switchedaround, and for vital parts to be left out. Those of you who read thebooks probably understand what I mean. But once you get past the fact that the two have nothing in common, youstart to appreciate the movie more. If I reviewed this right when I gotback, I'd have given it a 1 out of 10. However, after I thought aboutit more, it was a good movie. While nothing like the book, the script writers and director have to docertain things to adapt the book to the silver screen, and I understandand respect that. While I do think they could have done a lot more tomake it like the books, it turned out to be a decent flick to see.If I hadn't read the books, I'd probably give it 8 stars, but I knowhow amazing the books were. The movie doesn't quite add up, though itwas enjoyable to watch.

Big Disappointment!
My irritation with this movie came from the fact that the book had real potential for becoming the next great teen adventure series. I read the books a few years ago, and I knew the series' dynamic characters, winding storyline, and breathtaking imagery would make an amazing movie. Of course, when I heard the movie was in the works I was very excited. But then I saw the movie, and was horribly disappointed. I did not expect the movie to stick to the events and details of the book with extreme precision, but I didn't expect such a complete disregard for the original story either. Some differences are easy to tolerate (such as the change in the character's ages, or the actors' differing physical appearance from their counterparts in the novels) but most of the changes were too great to bear. All of a sudden, Percy has escaped camp with Annabeth and Grover on a personal mission to gather three pearls that will allow him to enter the underworld long enough to explain to Hades that he is not the lightning thief and then escape unscathed. Virtually every aspect of Percy's original journey is either omitted or reworked to fit the new story line. The only detail I liked was the definitive final battle with Luke through the New York skyline (which was also not part of the original story) because Luke's defeat meant that there will most likely not be a sequel to this terrible film.Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning ThiefPercy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief [Blu-ray]

Really awesome!!
Ok so I bet everyone is giving it bad reviews just because it doesnt follow the story line at all. It truly doesnt follow it, and the characters are all messed up, but who really cares!? I mean we should be happy that we got a movie for the books at all! The qaulity of the movie is really good and I loved it!! I watch it all the time!! I really wanted to see the movie, and I ended up getting it during Thanksgiving last year. If you are a Percy Jackson book freak, I suggest that you should buy this movie.. NOW!! Be aware of story mistakes including:1. Annabeth NOT having blonde hair and grey eyes2. No pact with the big three3. They are 16!4. No capture the flag5. No being "claimed" by their parent, Percy somehow knew who his father wasAnd a lot of other mistakes!!I really enjoyed this movie, and hopefully you will too!!!! :D

A Childrens Movie.
I think this movie would be exciting to someone who has never seen amovie before. A child would definitely enjoy this. Besides that, itseemed, like many other movies recently, to be normal. Normal is notentertaining, so the movie did not entertain on almost any level, particularly on a critical level. Maybe it is a waste of time to eventhink of theme as far as this movie goes, but, as always, theme isimportant. What the movie seems to say is so overdone it is hard tonotice, it simply says we are all special. A theme that, to a degree, Iagree with, but is otherwise overdone and a little silly sounding. Ithink it was a theme that was not even thought about, like so manyother things in this overly simple movie. As for the visual aspect of the movie, I found it hard to not noticehow terrible they were. Such a large idea should have had a lot moretime and effort put into every aspect of it. From the visual aspect tothe dialogue and acting, which was impressively terrible for a moviethat was hyped this much. I could have watched a different movie, butAvatar is not much better.A very solid 3/10.

A bit of a disappointment
My family went to see the movie "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: TheLightning Thief" today. All of us have read the books and are big fans.I do think it's interesting the comments made about how this movie is aripoff from Harry Potter. If you actually read the book, the movie wasnothing like it. I'd say it wasn't a bad way to spend a few hours. Myfamily liked it, at no time was I wondering how long we'd been in thetheatre. But where the book was great, the movie lacked...a lot.CGI was awesome. Medusa & her snakes were amazing. If you can avoid paying full price (where we live you can see movies onthe weekends for $5 per person before noon), you won't feel like youwere short-changed with this one.

The Books are great, the movie is just decent
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is about a teenage boy named Percy (Logan Lerman) hidden in the real world, who learns that he's the son of Poseidon. Zeus (Sean Bean), as well as other gods accuse Percy of stealing Zeus' lightning and he must learn to protect himself in order to survive. It's nice to see Chris Columbus return to making the kind of movie he's good at, since both Christmas with the Kranks and I Love You Beth Cooper were horrible. But Percy Jackson isn't as good as the book since the effects are weak and Columbus' direction with the first 2 Harry Potter films is much better. With Percy Jackson it's as if he wasn't even trying and as if he was thinking "I made two Harry Potter films, I can make a Percy Jackson one with my eyes close." While the movie doesn't follow the book close enough either, too much was cut out. Percy Jackson is basically Harry Potter with Greek Gods instead of Wizards after all. Percy is a hyper active kid who has no idea he's special and he lives with his mom and his smelly step-dad that he can't stand. Soon teachers turn out to be not what they seem and he finds himself in a world of magic and mystery. That does sound a bit like Potter doesn't it ? The author of the books brings more originality to his books than you'd think though. I'm reading the first book now and it's really as if I never seen the movie. The book is excellent, the movie doesn't really come alive until the middle when Madusa (Uma Thurman) appears and then the movie is finally fun. Up to that point the effects and the bad costumes made me almost give up on the movie, but it does at least get better.
