Storyline

Plot Summary:

Raul Julia plays Aram Fingal, a very intelligent computer programmer and a very bored man in the employ of Novicorp, a mega-corporation that exists somewhere in the future. When caught watching Casablanca at his desk, Fingal is required to undergo rehabilitation therapy called doppling. Doppled patients find their minds transferred into the bodies of animals for a new outlook on life (and for a number of amusing nature documentary sequences narrated by Julia). However, Fingals body is misplaced and he is transferred into a computer while the body is located. With the help of Appolonia James, a medical technician played by Linda Griffiths, Fingal manages to reprogram himself into a simulation of Casablanca and eventually gains access to Novicorps financial computers, bringing the company to its knees. But Fingals real problem is getting back into his body before his memory patterns are erased.

Ant-Eater haters, Children running amok at the brain institute

I loved Overdrawn at the Memory Bank simply because MST3000 did awonderful job bashing the movie. Fingal (Raul Julia) is some Casablancajunkie who gets "doppled" into a body of a monkey for compulsoryprophylactic rehab when his body becomes tampered with by a demonicchild, sending him for a sex change operation instead! This somehowcauses an energy surge in which Fingal stops dabbling in dopples andbecomes trapped into the supercomputer HX368. He then uses his wit andcunning to make it through his self-perpetuated reenactment ofCasablanca and to become interfaced with the HX368. All the while thecomputer which holds Fingals' memories and conscious are on the vergeof being obliterated by the short shelf life of doppling cubes. I don'trecommend buying this movie unless of course it is Volume 4 of MST3000DVD set. I liked it for it's humor and weird filming effects. The wholemovie is filmed like a dream sequence, with a slight haze around thelenses of the cameras.

Many people are much too harsh on this delightful fantasy.

Raul Julia died much too early, and without his well deserved Oscar.Perhapsthis wasn't his best effort, but it was far from a bad movie. Justbecausea film appears on Mystery Science Theater doesn't make it a bad movie.Thewriting was entertaining and thought provoking while the plot twists wereintelligent and unexpected. The melding of "Rick's" into the tapestry ofafantasy landscape was thoroughly enjoyable.

..mmm....huh?

I didn't really understand the movie when I saw it on MST, and I'm not sosure anyone involved in the film's production understood the concept either. There's something here about Raul Julia, getting lost somewhere in acomputer program, where he must go into the past to get out, at least Ithink that's it. The movie's point is never really clear or ever fully explained, but afterthe first 30 mins. it didn't really matter. The acting is pretty bad, butthe whole execution of the plot is what sinks this one. MST had some funwith this one, with mixed results in my opinion. 7 stars for that, none forthe flick.

Unaccountably Goofy

Unaccountably Goofy -- That was the thought going through my head as Iwatched this horrid mess. There is so much really bad humor in thismovie-- embarrassingly bad humor -- not even to mention the terrible visuals, goofy acting, and plot that just fails to try and make any sensewhatsoever.I mean the setting of the film is supposed to be some totalitarian futurenot much different from 1984 or, perhaps to a lesser degree, theMatrix --yet everything seems to be so positive and cheery. I would expectsomethingmore grim than this. It's like a Sesame Street production of Dark Cityorsomething -- the two do not mesh.I think this movie's one saving grace is that I've seen it on MST3K and"Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" lends itself very well to the riffing thatinvariably comes from Mike & the Bots. A bit like "Plan 9 From OuterSpace"-- so bad it's funny but definitely not as painfully bad as "Manos: TheHands of Fate" (worst movie ever). I still say this movie deserved a top100-ranking in the worst movies of all time.

Thank the people at Best Brains, or else, who knows what pains could have happened?

Without MST 3000, your local deranged video clerk might have leftthisunparalleled slice of inanity for someone to rent. The movie starts with aguy in a 3rd class job named Fingal (Raul Julia) who slacks off work bywatching forbidden digitized movies named under "Cinemus", they are notdirty by the way, so there isn't a slight point of reason why they areforbidden. Fingal seems to like Casablanca a lot, but he gets caught andissent to an aging masculine psychiatrist woman named a "Psychist" whoreallyjust does what her computer tells her to. He is then sent to what isnormally a vacation spot to learn the error of his ways by becoming an oldbaboon named Daisy, the exercise is pointless, Fingal just rolls downhillsand inadvertantly gets wasted. By some freak accident, the system crashes(Y2K?) and I can not tell you the rest, due to spoilers, fat men and nearsex changes. Rest assured this can be listed as one of the worst moviesnotonly in America, but Canada as well (standing tall and proud with theFinalSacrifice).

caution this film may be hazardous to your credit rating

This might have been an intriguing, memorable film about the usefulness of avivid imagination. The storyline is so confusing that there's virtually noplot development or drama. The best way to get through this picture is toread 1984 (by Orwell) or see a film version of that anti-utopian novel, andthen pretend that this film is somehow related to Orwell's classic. Themain idea of a "dreamer" living in a futuristic/totalitarian society with"thought police" and institutionalized brainwashing therapy was Orwell's;Overdrawn, Etc. adds computers and "virtual reality" hijinx, and that'sabout it... It's obscene even to mention the film Casablanca whilediscussing Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, but it's necessary to do so. MoreI won't say on that score. I haven't seen this film anywhere except inconjunction with Mystery Science Theater 3000, where it's treated with alldue respect.

I just assumed this was a comedy

I saw this movie years ago and had no knowledge of it whatsoever before Ipopped it into the VCR. I recognized Raul Julia of course and afterreadingthe title I just assumed it was a comedy. It is. A strange, odd, unusualcomedy. It is made with no budget to speak of and if production valuesfigure into your enjoyment of a film you'll never be able to make itthroughthe movie however if you can get past the cheesy look you'll watch one ofthe oddest films you'll ever see. I know most reviews for this film arebad, (there is certainly a lot to dislike about it) but watch it. It hasastrange charm and you'll never forget it.

How Overdrawn came about

As I've stated before, there is a special place in my heart for Overdrawn AtThe Memory Bank - it's similiar to those Saturday afternoon WNET movies thatI'd watch when I was either sick in bed or just plain bored and channelflipping. (The Tripods come to mind, for one.)It's not strange that Raul Julia, an ardent public television advocate wholived in New York, would do it. The question of why and how it came aboutis, though. For one, the movie was part of a series of science fiction productions byWNET in 1985, all adapted from short stories and novels. The people whoproduced Overdrawn At The Memory Bank also produced The Lathe of Heaven forPBS in 1979 as well. After The Lathe of Heaven, they had planned to producea series of science fictions films, though they only got to do Overdrawnafterward. You can read an interview with them here:http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue162/interview.html .As stated before, Overdrawn was one of three films in a series, which alsoincluded Kurt Vonnegut's "Between Time and Timbuktu". The moviewasdeliberately shot on video so they could include the digitaleffects.Considering the budget given, the visual effects were actually effective, ifa bit psychedelic.Raul Julia does do a very good job acting in this movie - someone onanMST3K site said he looked "embarrassed". Hardly. He actually sold the partpretty well. Incidentally, PBS had the rights to both Animals Are BeautifulPeople and Casablanca, which is why they made good use of both. The moviewas shot in Toronto, and most of the actors are from there - so blame Canadaif you must.(Incidentally, Animals Are Beautiful People is the funniest (and oftentimessad and touching) animal documentaries you're likely to find, earning anOscar nomination and directed by James Uys, who also did the classic TheGods Must Be Crazy.)The woman who plays Appolonia James, Linda Griffiths, also did averysuccessful one woman show in Toronto as well -http://www.aislesay.com/ONT-ALIEN.html- based on the life of GwendolynMacEwen called Alien Creature: A Visitation From Gwendolyn MacEwen. She alsohas had steady work since Overdrawn, too.In the end,is Overdrawn At The Memory Bank a bad film? Maybe. MST3K fodder?Oh, most definitely. However, for me, it brings back happy memories ofchildhood, and there is one quality that makes it better than most seen evenin Hollywood flicks:Everyone seems to be having a GOOD TIME making the film. They're having FUN.Donald Moore in particular (who plays Walenda Irving, the huge chairman ofthe board) is having a hammy ball with the material. Unfortunately, afterOverdrawn, he only did Blue Velvet then passed away.

1983 -the gifted class of 6th graders makes a film for the annual competition

To the reviewer who misquoted MST3K as saying Mr. Julia lookedembarrassed -no, they said he should have been embarrassed as shouldall of the other participants. Nearly half of the movie was the ratherbland but inoffensive heroine sitting around with her hand to her ear.The totalitarian aspects amount to a fairly normal prohibition of usingcompany time/computers for personal use and a "required" doppelvacation. This world is too clean for a dystopia and too poorly run foran effectively threatening technarchy. Why aredevelopmentally-challenged technicians employed to keep the doppler'sbodies in their right places? Why are snotty school children allowed tovisit such a potentially disastrous location? Only so that theotherwise laughably puny plot can develop. I have seen many a stinkbomb in my time including Carnival of Souls and Red Zone Cuba but eventhey weren't as hollow and boring as this "cinema."

Worth A Look

I'd avoided watching this movie for a long time and when I finally did seeit, it was from behind two bots and their human. The plot occurs in thefuture where movies are banned in a technological society where the onlyentertainment is placing your brain waves in a holo-deck-like simulation. The brainwave and memory patterns of Raul Julia are lost in the computersystem as he recreates reality from Casablanca, his favorite movie. Confusedyet, you will be. Julia in some shots does pass as close to Bogey as you canget, and Linda Griffiths is very lovely, but the best way to view this movieis by riffing it with your best two robot pals.

Original story fine, versus this piece of yknow

The original story is actually quite amusing and well done. It'sclassic sci-fi, but not that serious. This movie is like Dr. Whocrossed with the TV version of Hitchhiker's Guide: awkwardpauses, too much technology, wooden acting. It looks like itstars multiple Raul Julia robots, each of them with their ownterrible style. If you've seen Julia's Threepenny Opera, also aterrible, terrible film, you wouldn't be surprised at thisperformance. He was so damn good most of the time ... well, heslipped. He did a Sean Connery and took a crappy script formoney.

I AM INTERFACE!

Most famous for being featured on MST3K, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is avery obvious target. Starring actual talent Raul Julia for who knows whatreason (Did he need the money? Did he feel sorry for the PBS affiliaterelated to this?), the film is basically a cross between watered-down 1984and Tron, minus the elements that made the preceding two any good. There'sdoppling, Casablanca, crappy names, and not even cool for their timecomputer graphics. That said, unlike many films featured on MST3K, Overdrawn is actuallyprettyridiculous on its own. In fact, if you try to view it as a dorky comedy(nothard when you have Raul Julia giving a voiceover to stock NationalGeographic footage of a baboon) as opposed to a serious sci-fi outing, you'll find your enjoyment of the film increse tenfold (mainly becauseit'llthen be easier to digest the film's more asinine aspects). Stillrecommendedin its MST3K iteration, but isn't too bad otherwise.

In praise of a working actor...

Let me preface this comment by saying, first, I am an actor in LA, andsecond, that I am well aware that this is a very bad movie. Stupendouslybad. Mind shatteringly bad. Life alteringly bad. OK, fine...itsucked!But, I feel there are some points that must be made to explain (but by nomeans excuse) the well-meaning but misguided souls that worked so hard tobring us this dreck.First, PBS. Granted, this production should never have made it past thefirst table read. But one must remember that, only a few years before, PBShad been responsible for one of the greatest pieces of sci-fi ever toappearon TV: The Lathe of Heaven. This was a wonderful, faithful adaptation ofUrsula LeGuin's story. It was a genuine masterpiece. They probably thoughtthey could do no wrong. How wrong they were. But, for an organisation thatis notoriously strapped for cash, the attempt to widen it's appeal isunderstandable (if not forgivable). At least they hadn't started showingJohn Tesh concerts, yet.Second, Raul Julia. A great many people that make comments on this siteliketo say of a famous actor in a bad film, "he must have needed rent money",orsomething to that effect. Well, I hate to break it to all you non-actorsout there, but the fact is, some of us actually do NEED TO MAKE RENT MONEY.Raul was a great actor, an actors actor, but he was never a superstar. And,at the time Overdrawn At the Memory Bank was made, he had gained somesuccess on the Broadway stage, but he probably still needed the job. Thefact that he was a firm supporter of public broadcasting was undoubtedly abit of gravy. Not all actors are Jack Nicholson, w/50,000,000 off the backend of BATMAN. Some of us are Raul Julia, in 1984, drawing a paycheck, andhoping our talent will show through, and elevate a piece of crap likeOATMB.Third, MST 3000. OK, granted, they had nothing to do with the making ofthisfilm. But, they took an unwatchable (while well intentioned)film, andturnedit into an incredibly enjoyable film. And they were nice (as theyreasonablycould be) to Raul.

Please, read the short story!

Yes, I've watched the MST3K version and as usual the riffing ishilarious. Yes, this is a poorly done movie. BUT...... it's anexcellent story by brilliant sci-fi author John Varley. Check out hiscollection of short stories called "Persistence of Vision". "Overdrawnat the Memory Bank" is included in this book. This made-for-TV movieexplains very little and strays significantly from the original story.I want everyone to know that PBS completely botched the story! Whoapproved the script, anyway? As for this movie, watch the MST3K version and enjoy Mike and the'bots. It is one of the few episodes in which the parts with Pearl areactually funny, as she organizes a PBS-like "pledge-drive" for herself. But after you're through watching the movie read the story! Please!

Ranks right up there with Casablanca!

I only say that because for some unknown reason, Casablanca is used as aplot device in this really, inane TV movie that Raul Julia made when hemust've been brainwashed or something. Watch this one from the safety ofMST, otherwise you'll wind up in a baboon, or worse, ananteater!

A Good Reason to Hate PBS

for making such puerile drivel like this. This movie has no redeemingvaluewhatsoever. The only reason why 99% of the folks ever watched this bomb isthat MST 3K had it as one of their cut up flicks. Only their cast's banterin the background could make it palatable. Even the worst Hollywood flickismore watchable than this.

Yikes! What was Raul Julia thinking?!

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank... clever... anyway, this movie was not onlybadly done, the writers were also extremely prejudiced against anteaters.Don't ever watch this movie unless it's on Mystery Science Theater3000!

H-O-L-Y Crap!

Man, poor ol' Raul made a big mistake making this techno piece ofpre-matrixcrap. Well, early in one's career, you have to take what you can get.And it also shows how much crap, such as Woody Allen movies, can bemadein New York. At least he went on to bigger and better things. As for the movie itself, I think it is one of the longest, or at leastseems to run longest, movies ever. The movie was shot in business andcorporate towers and parking lots of malls, and the special effects andsetdesigns make space mutiny look futuristic. But if u want to see how a movie can turn out if u give it the reinsofdirectors and writers who make TV commercials and political campaing ads,see this one.

Prepare for the most....

.....migraine-inducing movie you've ever seen! Poor Raul Julia, he was agood actor in a very bad position. This movie is absolutely horrible Iseriously felt like vomiting. I tried to watch it a couple of times but Ijust couldn't sit through it.Funniest Things About this Movie: (Possibly spoilers)Watch for the part when Raul says to his mom, "Mom... my nuts.." He'sactually saying, "Am I nuts?" but that's not what it sounds like. He's turned into a female baboon, God only knows why. Anteaters are alsovery much disliked by the "writers".They go to a place called "The Place." Okay. Strikinglyoriginal.Raul is watching the movie Casablanca on his computer when he's supposed tobe working. He tells some girl he likes to watch cinemas. Her reply? "What'sa cinema?" Also, is a good movie allowed to be in a horrifyingly badmovie?1/10

Raul?

I have only seen this movie on MST3000 and therefore love it because it isso bad it's good! On the other hand if I watched this movie without itbeingon MST3000 I would have turned it off straight away. I have to say thatcrows joke at the start as the credits come up about Wanda Cannon is aclassic. I thought Raul Julia as an actor was extremely good and therecouldnever be another Gomez in my eyes and he is sadly missed. The reason he wasin this film will always remain a mystery!
