read this if Youre considering watching this with girlfriend on a date

To start, it's a good movie, really is. BUT, if you plan to watch amovie with your wife or girlfriend and she's sensitive and maybe youare too and you don't want you/her weeping and sad the rest of the day- then maybe skip this one. I'm spoiling it (as little as i can), but Ihope that I could save someone from sadness they were not prepared for.Save someone's date or evening. I really not expected this movie to bethis sad and me and my wife felt that in the following morning. As i said at the beginning, it's a well executed and interesting title. My wife fells asleep on movies often, but not on this one - that's agood recommendation believe me. The pace is stable and keeps yourattention to the end.

one day ..one story of all ones!

It's bloody amazing!when I decided to watch it I didn't expect to watchone of the best love stories I'v ever seen. I like the opinion liedbehind of this movies. the story begins at 15th July 1988 after agraduation ceremony.Dexter a rich guy try to have an affair with Emmafrom average society level.but due to some reasons they agree to remainjust Friend.and after that we can fallow them during a 20 years periodand from each year we only could watch one day and for sure it's 15thJuly!!! but of course for me as a bystander it seems I could not fallowonly Em and DEx trough these movie.it's like fallowing all of yourfriendships...relationships...happiness...disapponitments and so on...I read somewhere good movie is a movie that you miss watching it overand over again after the first time.and one day is actually one of thegood ones. I strongly recommend it to every one.

The original anti-Hollywood romantic friends in love movie...get ready to be surprised

I have to admit I cannot really be too objective about this movie. I'mjust too shocked - in a good way - with surprise. Let's start with that I have never given 10 so far, even for myfavorite movies. This of course doesn't mean that this movie isperfect, just means that let's sh*t on all the little insignificant"this could be done differently" details. This movie is like our bestfriend: love it with its faults - or especially for those. I loved the fact that throughout the movie we had the time travelingthrough the greatest hits....it made me smile all the time. I waswondering if this story would have been more attractive with moreattractive main actors: but NO: this couple made the story believable, and although Mr. Dexter won't keep me sleepless during the night, he isa real flesh and blood man, with his troubles. Anne Hatheway is perfectas a British actress - love her accent, and humor, suits her. I lovethat it never got corny: this love story could happen TO US: as it DOESHAPPEN to us. At least it happened to me.....so I saw myself in them. Ihave to admit I got upset when Emma died. It was a little bit banal, but as it made me cry - and that weeping went till the end... - so Ifelt that the impact it had on me was a sign for the right choice ofthis kind of ending. I mean it had to end somehow - and we cannot seethem going to IKEA, or going to get a little Chinese girl.....so in away it was okay. I could feel their love. Because it was human, and so full of littleimperfections, nothing too dramatic but at the same time beautiful. Also it was a great match to put Paris and London as the two settings -my two favorite cities. On the whole this movie was a huge surprise for me (have to admit Ididn't want to go to the movies back then...thought this would be justanother love story, how wrong I was!). It not only made my heart gofonder, but also made me laugh many times, and now I will go to sleepwith those images and feelings in my mind. I WANT ROMANTIC MOVIES LIKE THIS!!! PLEASE!!!

Pull the other one, mate

I give advance notice that I am going to be spoilering fairlyextensively as this review goes on: you have been warned. Spoiler-free synopsis: Emma and Dexter meet on the day they graduatefrom university (July 15th 1988): there is an instant connection, andthey nearly do the deed, but not quite. Instead, they enter into along-term friendship which we, the audience, look in on every year onthe anniversary of their meeting. Without giving anything away at thispoint, Emma becomes a waitress and would-be author who takes up with anunsuccessful stand-up comedian, and Dexter becomes a promiscuous TVpresenter. We can see that that, ideally, they should be togetherbecause Emma desperately loves Dexter, and would be able to turn himfrom the louche, dissolute rake he has become into the decent man hehas the potential to be. But, as the years go by, they always shy awayfrom it. Anne Hathaway plays Emma and Jim Sturgess plays Dexter.Let me comment on a couple of points frequently mentioned elsewhere. One, I had no problem with Anne Hathaway's accent. It was, mostly, atolerable all purpose moderately well-spoken British accent, withoccasional "oop north" flattened vowels unnecessarily thrown in. Itdidn't distract me. Two, I understand that the book is a big hit with achunk of the audience (the cinema audience was mostly older women inpairs, some with husbands dragged along. I was the only solo male). Ihaven't read the book, so I have no comment as to how well the filmrepresented it.This film irritated me. I recognise that I am not part of the targetdemographic for a romantic drama, but I can be reached: my tear glandsare perfectly prepared to well up in appropriate circumstances. However, I left the cinema dry-eyed and stony-faced: this film did nottouch me in the slightest.I think I was irritated with it right from the start. A young man, subsequently shown to be highly promiscuous, ends up in bed with a girlwho is ready and willing, and then - nothing happens? No, I don't thinkso. From then onwards I was constantly aware of the attempted pushingof emotional manipulation buttons, and it just didn't work. I thoughtthe acting was fine, the period atmosphere good despite the oddanachronism, but I couldn't see why these two totally dissimilar peoplewere soulmates, nor why they kept in touch, what she saw in him - inshort, nothing about the emotional side of the film worked for me atall.OK, now I'm going to get really spoilery. And then, after donkeys' years go by, and things go pear shaped forhim, Dexter finally learns a bit of humility by which time Emma hasfound herself a French jazz pianist. She instantly dumps the poorpianist and takes up with Dexter. While trying for a baby of their own(he already has a daughter by a previous relationship), she - really,I'm warning you, stop reading now if you don't want to hit a B.I.G.spoiler - is killed in a traffic accident. We then enter the final section of the film which attempts to have itscake and eat it. Intercut with each other we see Dexter coming to termswith life after Emma's death, in touching (but all not that touching!)conversations with his daughter and Emma's old stand-up comedianboyfriend, plus we see a kind of re-set button version of the dayDexter and Emma first got together which leads us towards the moresatisfying relationship they could have had/did have (?) For all theseyears. And that irritated me even more.I was never uninterested in what went on, but I should have been movedby this film, and I wasn't - and I think it is because it was full ofemotional dishonesty from start to finish.

A day in the life

Boy and girl meet. Not one day, but every day for the next 20 years.Naturally things happen during two decades. Love for instance and notonly for each other. But there is a special kind of warmth. It's not the deepest movie you've seen, but it tries to touch one ortwo depths. And Anne Hathaway really makes the script more honor thanit perhaps deserves. She's developing into a rather splendid comedyactress. She's also the progressing character here and the only one of the twoparts in this couple relation which is different in the end. Not amasterpiece this film, but OK viewing, but you can of course ask whythere are so many women in the audience and so few men.

We see Emma and dexter on 15th of July from 1988 till 2011, a day when they first met on a graduation night.

I am actually a big fan of young Jim Sturgess, that's what prompted meto watch this one. Honestly the plot looked interesting though Ihaven't read the book at all. You really don't like this movie till youfinish it. And when you do finish it, it grows on you. You carry itwith you, in your heart and soul. All thanks to wonderful editing. It's a very real journey of two adorable characters. The twists aren'tmany, the screenplay isn't any exciting either but the feel of it iswhat wins the day. Both Jim and Anne have lived the characters. This isone of those movies which take a very realistic take on romance andstill portrays it as beautifully as ever without getting melodramatic. The transition over 23 years is wonderful. This one is for true romance, for those who feel and live it. Just gofor it.

In the span of 18 years, maybe 22, examines the friendship of a guy and a girl.

The movie starts in 2006 London, with one of the characters riding abicycle, being careful, giving appropriate hand signals. We sensesomething eventful will happen, but then we are taken to 1988. It isEdinburgh, a group of friends have just graduated from college.Anne Hathaway (playing a Brit) is Emma and Jim Sturgess is Dexter. Thestage for the rest of the movie is set when Dex thinks this is thefirst time they are meeting, but Emma knows exactly who he is. Emma ishopelessly in love with Dex. He very quickly looks at her as a dearfriend. Some years later when they are skinny-dipping late on night in a lake,he explains that he loves her, but he also loves every girl he meets. He further explains that is it like his first day out of prison eachtime. Dex has a great difficulty committing to one person. The movie examines where they are, both in career and in theirfriendship, on July 15th each year. Sometimes they are in Paris, orLondon, or some other place in France or England. Emma wants to be awriter but mostly finds herself busy in the food service industry. Dexhas no idea what he really wants to do and finds himself as a TV showhost.I can see that many viewers will NOT like this movie because it doesn'thave the usual rom-com arc, where the couple fall in love and livetogether happily ever after, once they have sorted themselves out. Butit does show a type of realism about relationships and personalstruggle to figure life out.MAJOR SPOILERS: We finally are taken back to 2006 when Emma is ridingher bicycle. As she passed through an alley then into the street is rundown and killed by a delivery truck. Dex had married and divorced, buthad a cute blonde daughter, and as the movie ends he takes her up on aridge in Edinburgh where he and Emma had gone after graduation thoseyears earlier. He was finally realizing, now that she was gone, howimportant Emma had been in his life.

One horrible day..

I watched "one day" with great expectations I must say, because I hadjust finished reading the book and was very curious. But at the end Iwas very disappointed I must say. Loved the book, but hated the film. Ican understand that a whole book cannot be transfered to the big screenas one can imagine it or word by word, but at least I was expectingsomething more. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess were good choices forthe leading roles and I believe this even if I'm not a very big fan ofAnne Hathaway. I can only describe the film as bittersweet and it wasjust a loss of one and a half hour of my spare time. It's one of thesevery often cases when the book is better than the film.

A growing older movie

One Day Two eighties graduates in Edinburgh have an encounter ongraduation day, July 15th ; the film follows their relationship byannual updates. Dexter (Jim Sturgess) brilliant, charismatic and atotal narcissist and Emma (Ann Hathaway), a demure, warm sort are not agreat match and both hitch up with others, but their friendshipendures. The film is romantic, but only to a point, and can hardly be describedas a comedy; there is too much pain for that, despite some funnydialogue. It is a kind of growing older movie – early promise turningsour, bright young ambitious things tasting failure and settling forsomething less. The story is cleverly told and nicely shot, with goodsupport from Ken Stott and Patricia Clarkson as Dexter's disapprovingparents and Rhys Spall as Emma's husband. Jim Sturgess looks and actsuncannily like a younger Rupert Graves, who has portrayed a long lineof charming handsome wastrels. Ann Hathaway might be from New York butshe plays Emma perfectly – the dialect coaches really earned theirmoney. Both of the principals manage to evoke our sympathy, thoughSturgess has the harder job.July 15 is St Swithin's day. On that day in 1415 the English Army ledby Henry V (alias Laurence Olivier or Kenneth Branagh) defeated alarger French force at Agincourt. This has absolutely nothing to dowith the movie though Dexter and Emma do at one stage venture toBrittany, where they manage to lose their clothes in one of the film'smore comedic moments.I couldn't help feeling the story arc was rather predictable but I wasabsorbed nonetheless. At the end I'm not sure what the attraction wasfor Emma – she was smart enough to realise Dexter was a jerk butsomehow she couldn't resist. He does get better – perhaps deep down shewanted to reform him. Or perhaps deep down she wanted to be a bit wildtoo. A film for generation Xers who are wondering what the hellhappened to their youthful dreams and plans.

Waste of time

This movie had no beginning or end; it was a failed attempt by whatappeared to be a group of writers that disagreed (all the time) towrite a script. Half baked, British boring and no sense of direction.Romance!!!? Highly debatable, I guess if you are depressed -- I evendoubt that group would label this as romantic. The two main characters meet for a one night stand in college and moveon. How is that Romantic? There is no connection, no communication andno spark. The seem to live their own separate lives away from eachother. They come together for unreal reasons that do not fit in reallie. I recognize the fact that this is a movie and should not be real;but since this is a boring one, it should at least keep the realismintact. The death of the main character in the middle of the movie led me tobelieve there were two sets of writers for the script; the ones whobelieved Greek tragedy is the way to go; the second group who believedHamlet needs to be relived. Since These two could not agree on thedirection, we are left with this nonsense. If you are planning a suicide, this is the movie to watch; sad, gloomyand very boring. I thought the English Patient was the worst movie ofall times, now there is hope -- British cinema did it again...! Cheerio

A boring train-wreck of a romance movie

The previews for this film make it seem like a whirlwind romancebetween two people who are destined to be together. This is somewhattrue in the film, but it all kind of gets lost in the shuffle. We don'tget much background story since we only see the characters on one dayout of the year. There is almost no attempt to fill the audience in onwhat has happened the rest of the year. There was no build up to makeit feel as though these two were meant for each other. There was noclimactic, romantic scene when they make an advancement in thisrelationship. It was just all flat. Then out of no where one thingchanges the whole path of the film. After this everything becomesdepressing, but then the plot finally gets a bit romantic in the lastfew scenes of the film. It was all just a mess.I do love Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess who both did a good actingjob. But the writing was awkward and choppy. The plot didn't reallyflow because we didn't get any hints into what happened during the daysof the year we weren't seeing. The biggest problem, though, was it wasvery slow. I have not been bored in a movie in a loooooooong time! Ikept talking to my friends sitting next to me, because most of themovie was not keeping my attention. If I had watched this movie athome, I definitely would have fallen asleep.Overall, I like the concept of this film and the actors could make itgreat. But we did not get enough information to feel anything for thecharacters or fully understand their relationship. There was a littlebit of romance towards the end of the film, but this just didn'tmeasure up to expectations. It's hard to say don't see it, but don't be sad if you miss it.

Anne are you okay??.... Yes She Is ! -)

I thought that Anne Hathaway's Accent isn't as bad as the critics aresaying being that it's not her first time with a British accent(Finding Jane). I really enjoyed her performance! She really got into Emma Morley'slonging for a normal life and to be with Dexter :-) I also like JimSturgess. he Really honed into Dex's Loneliness and Love for Emma andto be stableSupporting character wise I enjoyed Rafe Spall as Emma stand up guy andThe always Lovely Patricia Calckson as Dexter's Mom stricken withcancer but still knows what he son is capable of and the estranged yetcoherent relationship of Dexter and his dad (Ken Scott) Overall It was A Good film with a good premise and great cast!

Romantic and moving drama.

One Day is a mixture of romance/drama in the right measure, which showsa couple of friends who had their lives marked by day July 15. All the drama takes place in just one day of the year, and every yeartheir life and their personality changes, leaving them increasinglydistant. And each year that these differences make the inevitabledistance, their love becomes more evident. Beautiful, charming, touching and romantic, with an end a little obvious, but stillbeautiful. Excellent performances, photography, script and soundtrack.Anne and Jim made a great couple. I recommend for anyone who loves a well told drama.

It may be hard to understand just what the two have on each other, but they are characters Im familiar with. The woman who is way too into a man thats way too into himself.

Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? I'm one who tends toavoid the discussion entirely by saying "both." One Day is the mostreal (save a few accents) movie I've seen in a long time. It explorestime and how it often slips away from us. Our hearts' desires are oftendecimated by bad timing, and the movie finds a variety of ways todemonstrate this. So in the case of One Day, art imitates life to thefullest, as we can all sympathize (if only a little) to crushed hopesand shattered dreams, though hopefully we eventually find our way.Anne Hathaway stars as insecure working-class woman Emma, who, for onereason or another is drawn to Dexter, (Jim Sturgess) a charming uppermiddle class man with a great amount of self-confidence. It may be hardto understand just what the two have on each other, but they arecharacters I'm familiar with. The woman who is way too into a manthat's way too into himself, it happens and for the type, Dex is prettylikable. Em and Dex have nothing in common. But their oppositepersonalities do what a relationship should; make each other better. They are Yin and Yang, complementary opposites. An interesting technique used by One Day, is that we only get to seethe events of a single day, July 15, for each of 20 plus years. Some ofmy peers have taken to calling this a gimmick. In a year where it seemsevery other film is either a sequel or a remake/reboot, (which criticsand public alike have grown tired of) I feel fresh ideas should beapplauded, even if it doesn't quite work. For me, however, it worked toperfection. Director Lone Scherfig (An Education) paints the picture ofEm and Dex's up and down relationship with great finesse, never havingtoo much happen on the date year to year. The filmmaker fills us in onwhat has taken place throughout each year, without conversationsseeming inorganic. The cinematography is beautiful, especially a scenewhere our would-be lovers break all their rules by taking a dip atsunset. There's plenty of humor, joy, sadness, regret and a number ofother emotions to be felt. I caution viewers that this isn't a romanticcomedy, nor does it end like one. One Day is, however, easily one ofthe most heartfelt films of the year and should be celebrated for itsbravery.

Few redeeming qualities

I just got back home from seeing this movie, and I feel like I've beenhit upside the head with a baseball bat. I'm a sucker for romanticmovies, and I've sat through hundreds of mediocre ones that werewatchable anyway. But One Day had to be one of the worst romance moviesI have ever had the misfortune to endure. It was especiallydisappointing because I've loved Anne Hathaway in just about everythingshe's been in (Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, Rachel GettingMarried, The Devil Wears Prada, Rio, etc.). One Day has few redeeming qualities, except for the occasional prettyscenery. The most serious problem is Jim Sturgess's character, Dexter.Dexter is an unlikable, shallow womanizer. I know what you're thinking:Charming womanizers are a staple of these movies. But Sturgess givesDexter no charm, no glimmer of humanity, no hint that there may belovable qualities beneath his contemptible persona. The usually wonderful Hathaway (Emma) gets mired down here in a badscript. And there is not the tiniest spark of chemistry between thetwo. I kept thinking, "Come on, Emma, block this loser's number andtake out a restraining order." When the inevitable romance comes, ithasn't a shred of believability. This movie ultimately amounts to aplain Jane wish-fulfillment fantasy (yep, Hathaway is supposed to beplain)...sort of like those movies where the nerdy guy gets the hotgirl. The plot structure is a big problem too. We see the main charactersonly on one day (July 15th) of every year from 1988 to 2011. Instead ofcontinuity, character development, and relationship development, we getmostly uninteresting snippets of their lives. The final straw for me though was the surprise ending, which was acompletely gratuitous attempt to insert meaningful drama into anotherwise vacuous movie. At this point, I was begging for the movie tobe over, but no such luck. Incredibly, screenwriter (and author of thebook of the same name), David Nicholls, drags this bad movie out foranother 15 minutes or so.

Better than I had anticipated

I went to see One Day last night, and though I had been looking forwardto it for a while, I was surprised at how good it actually is. The film has a very unique atmosphere, as it is much quirkier than youraverage romance. Also, without giving away the ending, I can say thatit isn't as predictable as one might think. What I really liked aboutit was the complexity of the different human relationships that we areshown. The relationship between Emma and Dexter is by no means an easyone, nor is it one-sided. Given how different they are, there is a lotof conflict between them, although they do love each other. Similarly, what Dexter and his ex-wife feel for one another is never pure hatred, but there is a lot of understanding between them. As a consequence, thestory seems like it could be taken from real life. Plus, both Hathaway and Sturgess are as convincing as always, whichmakes this film absolutely worth seeing.

Oscar-Worthy

I don't like "smarmy" romances. This isn't one of those. It not onlyseems real and taken from real life, it's from MY life. I don't want togive away anything, but the bike scene raised spontaneous gasps andscreams from the audience. At that point, the predictable, formulaiclove story took a ninety degree turn. This is the kind of movie you goto when you want to see real people interacting in real ways. No CGIhere. The actors and director deserve special mention, especially inthis era of car chases (there are none) explosions to end the world(none of these, either), and walking zombies (sorry to disappoint ya --none of these). People looking for year-end lists of award-worthymovies should include this one. Bring tissues.

The formula demands . . .

One Day is promoted as drama romance and not a rom com. On all threecounts I would call it out anyway, for it is a melodramatic, episodictale of two best friends in London, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter(Jim Sturgess), who flirt with love over a long period but play on thestandard cliché that requires they eventually end up together, regardless how many marriages and children intervene. One Day has too many short episodes from college in the '80's untilprofessional life in 2011, and each seems just a variation on anotherbefore it: boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back again, well, you know the routine. During all these little skirmishes Emmaremains wholesome (no stretch for the perpetually cute Hathaway, reminding me of Sally Hawkins' Poppy in Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky. But without Hawkins' charisma).Dexter is a cad and Lothario almost all the way, making him unlikeableand difficult to gain our sympathy. His cavalier treatment of hismother (the ever-interesting Patricia Clarkson) and father (Ken Stott)adds to his surly persona. In addition, Sturgess needs a littlecoaching or better script if he wishes to catch up with the Ryans(Gosling and Reynolds) in the emerging leading-man lineup.Nowhere do I feel a real sexual heat, especially since in most of thefilm they are avowing to be just friends. Moreover in the numerousyears/episodes I do not feel the intellectual and emotional connectionthat comes so naturally in Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise/Sunsetseries. Even director Lone Scherfig's Parisian scenes are vacant, poorcousins to Woody Allen's romantic City of Lights in Midnight in Paris. As an Anglophile, I usually can forgive many sins if a film gives me anadequate dose of the great city, but as with the Paris background, romance takes a holiday even from the cities.

Too many bitter reviewers...

After perusing other reviews for this movie, I believe that many of theratings are low, not because viewers disliked the movie, but becausethey disliked the element in which the film shines. The film succeedsin drawing the audience into the friendship between the maincharacters, played by Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway. Both charactersfind happiness and meaning in parts of their lives, while sufferingthrough other portions without attaining goals they've set forthemselves; i.e., this is real life. What the poorly-rating reviewers seek is escapism. In my view--howeverlimited--this film aims to depict two human beings as they learn, grow, and fall in and out of touch with one another. Thus, don't expect anyfairy tales here and don't punish the rating on this movie because itisn't a fairy tale! A predictable conclusion to this movie would place Sturgess andHathaway side by side, married, and living together untouched by thetrials of a realistic relationship. Instead, the director effectivelyand with calculation showcases some of life in the scenes and merelyhints at events not shown on the screen. As the film narratesexclusively through one date each year (hence, the name), partialnarratives are expected. The final third of the film, shunned by a fewreviewers, elevated the creative vision of the story because itintroduces the unpredictable nature of real life into a movie that wasotherwise a run-of-the-mill romance. Again, speaking in terms of thedevelopment between characters, the movie is above average. Speaking interms of storyline, the first two-thirds, to a certain degree, lackwhat the final third delivers: surprise! The juxtaposition of the present with the past near the end of thisfilm makes the events even more potent than they would have been.Audience members who do not fall into the "half-wit" category canfollow the story, regardless of what the viewers who read the novelstate in their reviews. Bravo! Lastly, Anne Hathaway is exceedinglylovely.

not a romance folks - spoiler alert

spoiler alert - I write romance and there are rules for romance and oneof the rules is that it's not a romance if you flatten the heroine witha truck! The entire audience gasped out loud and it wasn't a good gasp.It was a shocked "I can't believe they did that" kind of gasp. The story was moving along so well. Sturgiss was great as lost soul Dexand Anne was fabulous for a doormat, but together they brought out thebest in each other. The film showed a wonderful maturity of theirrelationship and their characters. I'm so ticked off that they powers-that-be behind this movie portrayedit as a romance. It's not and I wish I could get my money back.
