Storyline

Plot Summary:

Based on John Steinbecks 1937 classic tale of two travelling companions, George and Lennie, who wander the country during the Depression, dreaming of a better life for themselves. The writer

I think that Steinbeck is an allsome writer. The plot is so good. Theareas that he had picked for each set is so well done. Lennie is sofunny even throw he doesn't know what hes talking bout most of thetime. George tough him very well. I think that Curley & slim is so hot.Curleys wife should not have been missing around w/ other guys. If anyone is starting to read books , i think that they should read this bookthen see the movie. After you get done reading / watching this movieyou should start to pick up his other book called The Grapes of Wrath.I've seen both in color and black & white and read the book of Mice &men. I only seen the play of grapes o

A guy dont need sense to be a nice fella

I haven't read the novel(with that said, it probably is superior tothis, as is almost invariably the case), and when I first heard thetitle of this, I was actually expecting it to have originated as aplay. Therefore, I can't comment on this as an adaptation of the sourcematerial. This is one of the only films that Sinise has directed, and Icertainly see reason to give him more chances to do so. The plot isgreat, and though you can sort of figure out fairly early whether ornot it will have a happy ending, it still holds surprises. This isabout the lowest in society, and the lack of chances and tolerance thatthey must endure. The acting is excellent, although I understand thatwhile Malkovich's performance makes Lennie come off as retarded, he wasnot as mentally debilitated in the book. With that said, he gives therole the gentle innocence that it needs. Every part is well-cast. Thecinematography and editing are nice without drawing attention tothemselves, and the well-written characters are what drive thecompelling story forward. There is a little violence and disturbingcontent in this, some of it strong. I recommend this to anyone matureenough for it. 8/10

One change (for the better) from the novel

It's true that the film follows the novel very faithfully, with theexception of a few details at the end. For me, the slightly revisedending is even more powerful than Steinbeck's original.Steinbeck wrote both novel and stage-play versions of OF MICE AND MENat about the same time (ca. 1937), and it always seemed to me that theending, in which the posse shows up after George shoots Lennie ("Youhadda, George, you hadda"), was a device to get George off the stage atthe end of the show. In Sinise's film, the posse never shows. Instead, the scene of George expressing his anguish over what he has just donedissolves into a shot of him riding the train. It's a more effectiveway of underscoring how alone in the world George is now.As a side note, it's a shame this film wasn't more popular whenreleased in '92. Although the entire cast was superb, Ray Walstondeserved an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. He might nothave won against the likes of Hackman, Nicholson, and Pacino (threenames you'd not expect to find in the supporting-actor category in thesame year), but he deserved a nomination at the very least.

It doesnt get any better

Steinbeck could have written this for these actors. The movie is understated and loyal to the novel. The acting superb. It is clear that the actors, screenwriters, everyone involved loved this story and treated it with respect and great care.

Beautifully done, but S L O W

For the right-brained, in-touch-with-their-and-everyone-else's feelingstype of person -- for any English Major! -- I'm sure this is awonderful story and a wonderful movie. For the left-brained, "just the facts, Mam" type of person, it isexcruciatingly slow and tedious. It's still a well-made movie, but Ithink I can sum it up with two questions for discussion: 1) Is itmerciful and "right" to put down an old dog? 2) If you have a loved onewho doesn't fit into society, or who very soon isn't going to be ableto continue the life that he or she is accustomed to, is it mercifuland "right" to put that person out of the misery that's sure to come?I consider the subject matter of this story to be EXTREMELY mature. No,there's no sex, language, or extreme violence, but the subject matterrequires a mature intellect. ...or maybe it requires no intellect andabsolute immaturity: A sixteen-year-old might easily be able to see theblack and white and right and wrongs of the story; A sixty-six year oldwill only see the gray shades of the dilemmas.

1301 Assignment

The movie Of Mice and Men is a motion picture adaptation of JohnSteinbecks novel directed by Gary Sinise who also plays as GeorgeMilton. Sinise and Steinbeck were close friends and when Steinbeck diedSinise decided to create the motion adaptation into something that heknew from his heart that Steinbeck would have enjoyed to watch over andover again. John Malkovich plays the character Lennie Small, with musicby Mark Isham, and Kenneth MacMillan as the Director of Photography. This movie is set in the depression era and is no doubt a drama. The riveting story is a tale of two men whom travel together across theland to make money to fulfill their dreams. George is a small quickwitted man, while Lennie is a slow giant. They often have to find workelsewhere because Lennie accidentally falls into trouble. Lennie andGeorge came together because George knew Lennies aunt Clair whom use togive Lennie rabbit and mice to pet because he loved to pet soft things.Lennie would often kill the animals by petting them too hard, so auntClair stopped giving them. Clair died and asked George to take care ofLennie, so George made the promise. Since then they had been travelingtogether with the thought of one day owning a land of their own. Georgewould often tell this detailed story of owning the fat of the land toLennie, and promised him that one day he would get to tend the rabbits. When watching this movie compared to the book one thing to think aboutis how convincing and well played everything is. Most can say that itdepends on the actors skills to persuade the audience, but without theperfect camera location, the movie could look like another youtubesensation. Kenneth MacMillan does an excellent job at creating moodsolely with the camera, for example when Carlson was persuading Candyto let him shoot his old dog. Carlson walked over to his bunk toretrieve his gun, but Slim was having a conversation with Whitt aboutsomebody in the newspaper. However Slim and Whitt were blurred out, showing Carlson in the back ground showing that although other thingsare happening within the room. Candy is only focused on one thing. Another thing to consider is the music placement within the film. MarkIsham did the music track to this film and definitely made the movie aseat gripping experience when something were to occur. Music can changethe mood and emotion of just about anything. Just in the beginning whenit showed the woman in the red dress running for her life the music wasvery appealing to the ear letting us know that nothing completely fatalhad happened, but something unfortunate and accidental may haveoccurred. The music throughout the movie is very western and wellplaced.Overall this film was a hoot and a holler. John Malkovich played astunning roll as Lennie, and Gary Sinise could not have done a betterjob at re-creating such a great book into a movie. Watch this with anopen mind and you will be placed into their shoes, as well as theirhearts.

John Malkovich and Gary Sinise Play Roles to Perfection

If you have read the book but haven't seen the movie, you are making a (as Donald Trump would say) "HUGE" mistake. Acting was created so Gary Sinise and John Malkovich could play these roles! And I really mean that.I have read John Steinbeck's novel a few times. I am seriously bothered by the constant "using the Lord's name in vain" in all of Steinbeck's novel, but that doesn't discount the fact that he is a great writer - one of the best of all time. When I finally got to watch the movie, I was blown away by what a great job Malkovich and Sinise did playing their characters. But I was even more blown away by the rest of the actors ability to step up to the plate too. Every character was just as I pictured them in my head. There are a few scenes that are not exactly as they were in the book: Curley's wife confronts George while he is alone in the barn...that's not in the book. Candy walks in on Lennie and Crook in Crook's room which is not in the movie. But these little changes matter not...the soul of each character is captured perfectly by this amazing movie!Lennie and George are partners in their walk through life, and they couldn't be more opposite: Lennie (Malkovich) is a child in a big man's body, and George (Sinise) is the quick thinking (though never quite quick enough) sidekick determined to watch after his friend. The two actors are amazing on screen; I could almost swear they were having a contest to see who could actually (really) change in to their character. I think it was a tie!I wish I could give it six stars - not an option though.See ya next review!www.therunninggirl.com

A depressing but extrordinary film

John Steinbeck's classic tale of men deperately trying to escape their monotonous and meaningless lives is captured extraordinarilly in this film. The film relates to the novel nearly line for line. Malkovich dramatizes the simple minded but caring character of Lennie exceptinally and Sinise performs equally as well as George, Lennie's protector and sometimes stern friend.

telling tale

A great movie of fraternal love, lonliness and kindness. But hope is the thread that ties this movie together. As often happens, best laid plans often go astray, and our dreams always keep us going, but don't necessariily come true. Sometimes the dream is all we need. a great movie.

Excellent Performances from all, especially Sinise. One small criticism would be Malkovich`s sometimes strange performance buthe makes his character sympathetic.

Not Good

I enjoyed the book Of Mice and Men very much, however this film doesnot live up to any of the drama and emotion of the book. The screenplayis weak and the acting is terrible. The accent given to Lennie in themovie does not match at all with how it is written by Steinbeck. GarySinise's role as George was not believable, and Curley's Wife was someof the worst acting I have ever seen on film. The film was poorlythought out and poorly directed. Its lack of change in camera shots andthe extremely slow and boring screenplay did not interest me at all.Lennie's voice was enough to make me want to shoot him in the firstscene. It was so annoying, unlike the possibly lovable voice thatSteinbeck gives to him in the book. Although it follows the book's plotclosely, it is just a bad movie.

One of my favorite movies!

Of Mice and Men is mainly about friendship. George is always there for Lenny and Lenny is always there for George. Sadly, this movie's also about shattered dreams. But hey that's reality. I don't understand why anyone would hate this movie. The acting is flawless...it's not overdone or underdone! The directing was awesome, they got the full meaning of the book out...the music even fit perfectly!! You'll fall in love with George and Lenny. I've seen this movie a few times now..and I've cried everytime. It's the only depressing movie I love (and probably the only one I'll love). This movie also made me love Gary Sinise!! He's such a wonderul actor...and director..and producer...but of course John Malckovich did a great job as well ^_^ It's very sad how this didn't win any oscars...but then again, Lord Of the Rings didn't get best picture...so maybe I don't like the Academy Awards! :P This movie...left me speechless afterwards. Of Mice and Men is for anyone with a heart! I simply love everything about it and can't find anything bad to say. (Which is rare for me ^_^)So...if you haven't seen it, SEE IT NOW!!!!

This is one of the best movies i have ever seen! The best part was the acting. Lets just say, the actors in this movie were amazing. The best acting since Forest Gump.

from Maddie W.

This movie is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It teaches one of the most essential lessons in life and keeps you watching the whole time. This movie is about a guy who befriends a mentally challenged man and has to make a decision on whether to leave him like everyone else who has known him, or to stay by his side and protect him from the cruelty of life. I would recommend this movie to anybody who is interested in a tear jerking, yet intriguing story on two best friends that have a decision to make. I rate this movie 5 stars.

Beautiful with charm and gusto.

It is very hard to not like OF MICE AND MEN. It is a beautiful movie. Theperformances are lovable. The scenery is excellent. It stays true to thenovel. Very little to complain about in this early-nineties upgrade. BlessGary Sinise for making an excellent update.Based on the novel by John Steinbeck, buddies George Milton and Lennie Smalldrift across the countryside looking for work in the Great Depression. Theyfind a comfortable job bucking barley but it seems trouble just does notwant to leave them alone.Would anybody have the courage to do what George does at the end of thismovie? The moral has a stronger impact in the movie than the novel. JohnMalkovich does a stunning performance as Lennie. The setting and pace of OFMICE AND MEN may turn off some viewers but the movie is too exceptional tocomplain about it. A great job by everyone involved.

A heartstring tugger in the traditional sense!

Steinbeck's ability to define the human condition is and remains unparalled in American letters. Add to this the artistic genuis that is so evident in Sinise both as actor and director and you have the makings of a great classic which is just what this movie is. Malkovich did a better than average job of portraying the retarded Lennie but playing retarded people seems to be a hurdle that most actors seem not to be able to make too well and Malkovich's portrayal is no exception. Have heard it said that George's and Lennie's relationship was that of brothers. I disagree and find George's reactions to Lennie's condition to be more paternal than sibling and I think this picture brings out that side of the relationship. Find myself wondering is Sinise didn't see it too.

Entertainment of astonishing quality

An incredible movie -- in the top three greatest movies of all time. JohnMalkovich was breathtaking in this performance. Gary Sinise was magnetic. All with an abundance of themes. If you want a movie about life --straight-- this is the one to watch.

Great Adaptation

This is one of the rare cases in which the movie is actually betterthan the book it was based on. John Malkovich was excellent as Lenny. He was completely believable in his part. Gary Sinise also did awonderful job as George. Aside from acting in the film, Gary Sinisealso directed and produced. There is nothing bad about the acting inthis movie that I can say. It was great. The movie was very faithful to the book, but it gave a much differentperspective on certain points, mainly Curley's wife. It was a veryinteresting adaptation, one that should not be missed. I wouldrecommend this movie to everyone, whether they have read the book ornot.
