You could do worse with young kids, and they'll romp along with Marmaduke's throwaway adventures, it's just there's much better stuff out there that will entertain viewers above the age of 10 too.

Did not hold my childs attention
This review is from: Marmaduke (Amazon Instant Video) While this movie may be good, my 7 year old, who wanted to see it after the 2 minute preview, could not stick with this movie. Perhaps it is better suited to the whole family watching together, or to older children.

It contains approximately twice the laughs of "Sex and the City 2" and half the number of bitches.

Great Family Movie
Marmaduke is a great family movie for viewers of all ages. I went tosee it with my 19 year old daughter and we both enjoyed it! Of coursewe are dog lovers and maybe a little biased. The movie centers around Marmaduke and his human family, the Winslow's.The family is moving from Kansas to California for a job opportunitythat Phil Winslow was presented with. Marmaduke struggles to make newfriends and to find somewhere to fit in just as the two older Winslowchildren, Barbra and Brian, who encounter these very same issues. Theyall miss their old lives and friends back in Kansas but they eventuallyadjust and want to stay in their new home. The filmmaker does a good job at portraying Marmaduke as human-like aspossible and captures the typical mischievous Marmaduke that you wouldremember from the comic strip. He jumps out the bath tub flinging waterthroughout the house, drags Phil, eats food off the counter, has aparty and trashes the house, chews up shoes, and farts in bed. Allclassic behavior for Marmaduke. What I liked most was the human-like behavior that was displayed by theanimals. Marmaduke's party has to be one of my favorite parts of themovie. There are dogs jumping off the roof into the pool, sprayingsilly string, and there is one dog sleeping on the front lawn. Typicalteenage behavior. Another good scene is Marmaduke and Jezebel having aromantic evening at the junk yard. They are sitting on a blanket, sharing a jar of peanut butter and Marvin Gay's "Lets Get It On" isplaying in the background. Hysterical! The dialog between the dogs isvery cute and creative. There are many one-liner's that incorporate dogbehavior and their likes and dislikes in some of their conversations. In one scene when Marmaduke is forced into a surfing competition hetries to calm himself by thinking happy thoughts of open meadows andpeeing on everything. Typical dog behavior. There was also a scene whenMazie was showing him around the dog park and telling him about thevarious dog cliques. She described one group as rich snobs that thinktheir fleas don't bite. Too funny! The overall animation of the filmwas pretty good and created a believable effect of animals taking toeach other. However the scene at the end of the movie where the dogsare dancing in the park could have been a bit better to make theiractions look less computer-generated. The movie Scooby Doo had similarissues. Regardless, I still love both movies.

Well, here's another talking-animal movie, full of computer-generated imagery and body-function humor.

Some reviews misleading
Before going to see this movie, I read through these reviews and afterward concluded that many are misleading. This is a great movie for children and my husband and I enjoyed it also. There is no sadness in it. (spoiler)No animals or humans die in this story. Some fun animal surfing and a few moments of danger for two dogs but saved. Good animal voices and fun to hear Sam Elliott. Not an academy award winner but dog (and cat) lovers and kids will enjoy this movie. Also, I don't like most Academy award winners, anyway (although this year I agreed with them).

A pathetic waste of time and money for all concerned, the movie pushes one's patience to the brink.

Marma dud
No one over eight should see this movie. Dogs talk but only other dogsand the audience hears them. The only time Owen Wilson (the voice ofMarmaduke) stops talking is to pass gas. The lessons of family, beyourself and accept others is lost in the sea of repeated poop jokes, pee jokes and no jokes. On the plus side there's a nice cross sectionof dog breeds on screen. For a short movie it seemed like a very longtime to get to the dancing dog scene highlight of the trailer. The dogsin peril action may be too intense for the age group that might enjoythis movie. See it only with a young child and enjoy it through theireyes.

Once upon a time, there was a promising young acting talent who went by the name of Owen Wilson.

No! No! Definitely not!
Hmmm. New dog in the neighbourood goes to the local dog friendly park(high school). There he becomes instant friends with the 'mutts'(geeks). His sights are caught by the sheer beauty of another dog (amember of the 'purebreds', or 'cheerleader') who is going out with thetop dog of the 'purebreds' (jocks). Of course, a lady dog in the'mutts' secretly likes him. To get in with the 'purebreds', Marmadukestages a bogus cat fight with the family cat and disowns the 'mutts',crushing his crush's heart (awww..). When the fam is away (yes, somewhere amongst the fray the two-leggers manage a cameo appearance)Marmaduke holds a frat party whereby his bogus cat fight is exposed. Then the purebreds go back to their hangout and the mutts want nothingto do with him. Do I really need to tell you how it ends? But, don't take my word for it. When I started the movie there were 3adults and 2 children watching. By the end of the movie the 2 childrenhad gotten bored and and went off to play. Seriously, don't waste yourtime or your money. Even the kids know the game is up for this genre.

Rated PG for Parental Gagging...
MARMADUKE (very minor spoiler ahead) This is a movie thatRottenTomatoes gave a 90% rotten rating, that received a 30/100Metacritic rating, and a 2.8 (out of 10) from IMDb. So why did so manythink that this is a "steaming pile" (as one dog eloquently puts it inthe movie)? The answer is twofold, perhaps: (1) Marmaduke the comic isa sweet one-panel cartoon that usually derives its humor fromMarmaduke's size (Marmaduke is a Great Dane, in case you are unfamiliarwith the cartoon). Its humor is simple and direct, and Marmaduke themovie is not. What Marmaduke the movie is, is another stereotype teenhigh school movie with dogs instead of humans, which is reason (2).After so many movies about how nasty and vicious the "in" kids are andhow the sweet, downtrodden "not in" kids triumph in the end, doing thesame cliché with dogs instead of people doesn't refresh the cliché, itjust turns it into, well, a steaming pile. Now, having given you thedown side, here is the good part: the movie is full of physical comedy, jokes, more physical comedy, and an energy that will please manychildren. And this is reason enough to make it less odious to parents:it's hard to hate a movie that is making your child laugh. And ofcourse the movie is full of dogs, and who doesn't have a soft spot forman's best friend? Judged as cinematic art, this is horrible. But aschildren's entertainment, it will be fine for many children. Taken assuch, it is quite passable (but then, so are many kidney stones; youjust might experience some pain from both).

A low-impact kid's comedy, "Marmaduke" may have little in common with the comic strip upon which it's based but remains a perfectly viable flick for dog-loving families.
02 May 2012
Somewhat amusing, but often cringe-worthy, cheesy, silly and, worst of all, fails to engage kids and adults simultaneously.

So like Great Danes
They so have Great Danes down in this movie. It was a delight. Having had three of them at one time or another, I can definitely guarantee it. Seeing Marmaduke sit on the couch, like a human would do, reminded me so much of my first Dane, Courageous who used to sit side by side with me watching TV. Even the fictional character's unwillingness to engage in a fight with another dog was so like my dogs. It was sort of "let's discuss this" with Courageous. Even the dominant dog in the park scene was familiar. I took my dog Tempo to a dog park starting as a puppy. A cane corso mounted him every time to prove he was dominant over Tempo. Then one day he walked up to Tempo, saw that his butt was actually too high up off the ground to actually even attempt it, and just walked away. After that it never came up again. Taking the human for a walk, even the complaints about hearing the comments about "where's the saddle?" all the time are also familiar! For anyone who has never had the blessing of being loved by one of these wonderful animals, this is a perfect introduction. I adored my Danes and loved the movie.

If it werent for this, Furry Vengeance would still be the worst film of the year
Okay, let me clarify something here: I loved Garfield & The Cat In TheHat. With both those movies being guilty pleasures for me, don't accuseme of being biased towards talking animal films. That being said,Marmaduke is the worst film of the year. I couldn't believe that goodactors like Owen Wilson, Sam Elliott, and Emma Stone were voices inthis. I also could not believe how dull the incredibly talented LeePace and the incredibly talented William H. Macy were in this. The filmis a plot less mess trying to claim itself as a movie but failingmiserably. It's too mean spirited with jokes about dogs getting highfor kids and too immature with jokes about dogs farting for adults. There's really no audience for this film, unless some other planetfinds all this stuff funny. If you are ever to use this movie foranything, break the DVD where you're mad. Everyone involved in thisproject, talented or not, should be ashamed of themselves for being inthis terrible film. Even if you've read the comic strip, there's nonostalgia or entertainment value here as they have turned it intomodernized crap. Overall, you can simply skip Marmaduke because this isa really sad day for film.

It's a lot of twists and turns for very little reward. But bottom line, will the kids like it? Quite possibly.

What is Marmaduke getting into now?
I always enjoy the Marmaduke comic strip when ever I see it. Since 1954, Brad Anderson has been drawing "Marmaduke" with the assistance of Phil Leeming (1955-1962), Dorothy Leeming (1963-69) and Paul Anderson (2004-present). Marmaduke was also seen in the animated tv series, Heathcliff (1980-82) on ABC. This is the live-action motion picture of Marmaduke (2010), the loveable great dane. CGI-effects is used to show the animals talking and in other situations. Marmaduke (voice of Owen Wilson) introduces his family to you and the yard he likes to dig in. His only friend in Kansas is the pet cat, Carlos (voice of George Lopez). Their owner Phil Winslow (Lee Pace) decides to leave Kansas to accept a new job and move to Orange County in California. We get to see how Marmaduke tries to adjust to his new life in sunny California. At least the doggie door is big enough for him. Also in the cast: Judy Greer, Finley Jacobsen, Caroline Sunshine, Milana Haines, William Macy. Other voice work by: Emma Stone, Fergie, Kiefer Sutherland, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Sam Elliott, Marlon Wayans, Damon wayans Jr, Ted Glass. Option of language and subtitles in English and Spanish. Extras: Deleted Scenes, Cowabarka, Canine Casting. You might enjoy another great dane: Scooby-Doo (Full Screen Edition) (2002) Scooby-Doo 2 - Monsters Unleashed (Full Screen Edition) (2004).
