Cute Movie

I was looking for a fun, romantic movie and this delivered. I enjoyed the acting and the story was better than I first thought it might be. Great chemistry with all of the cast.

Wonderful Romantic Comedy

Letters to Juliet is about a young woman and her fiancé who travel toVerona, Italy for a sort of pre-honeymoon. Verona, Italy is the settingfor Romeo and Juliet. While there Sophie who is played by AmandaSeyfried, finds a letter in behind a rock where women from all overcome to write letters to Juliet. Sophie decides she needs to write backto Claire who is played by Vanessa Redgrave, even though it is from 50years ago. Sophie writes Claire and tells her she should come and findher long lost love. Claire takes her advice and travels to Italy withher grandson, Charlie, played by Christopher Egan, to find her loveLorenzo. The theme of the movie is true love. True love never fades and willlast an eternity. There is also nothing or no one that can stand in theway of true love. A film that this can be compared to would be TheNotebook because the characters stand the test of true love. The camera angles play an important role to the theme of this movie. The angles always capture the emotions on the characters faces. You arenever left wondering what the expression on their face is throughoutthe movie and the situations that arise. The lighting of film is verysoft which makes the expressions you see on the faces seem moreintense, like you can feel what they are seeing. The soundtrack of thefilm helps add to the location and makes it more romantic. The wholetime that they are in Italy the only music that is played is inItalian, which gives it a more real romantic feeling. In one scene Charlie makes a comment to Sophie and Claire about hisobjections to try and find Lorenzo 50 years later. Sophie comes back athim saying "I'm sorry; I didn't know that love has an expiration date. This is just one time where the theme is played out it dialogue. If you believe in true love and that nothing can stand in its way thenthis is definitely a movie for you.

I KNEW ID LOVE IT

Even though I didn't feel the character of Charlie was well acted, a little stiff, I LOVED the movie. What a great story. The character Sophie on the other hand, was well acted. The story was plotted out well, keeping you on your toes. The ending is what really did it for me. There's nothing like an amazing ending, and LETTERS TO JULIET had that.

Letter to Juliett - Amazon

This review is from: Letters to Juliet (DVD) Thank you for the prompt receipt. I had seen the movie on cable and fell in love with it. I wanted one for my personal library so I ordered two copies...one for me and one for a friends birthday gift. Again, thank you.

Unfortunately, I didnt connect at all with Letters to Juliet.

"How many Sophies do you think there are on this planet? Don't wait 50years like I did."I'm up for the occasional chick flick. Some of them are entertainingenough to cross the gender gap, and just because a movie is madeprimarily with women in mind, doesn't mean that it can't be enjoyablefor a guy, if it's well-made. Sadly, Letters to Juliet is not one ofthose movies. It's a pretty straightforward tale of young love found and old lovesought for, with Amanda Seyfried's character helping an older womanattempt to find a man she loved long ago in Italy. In no uncertainterms, I found it to be very boring. The characters were all bland anduninteresting, there was no humor or really any interesting situationsto capture my attention, the story followed all the tropes and clichésthat this genre so often succumbs to, and it takes far too long toreach the convenient resolutions that are telegraphed from the firstten minutes. I will say that the locations in Italy where the film wasshot were absolutely gorgeous. I would have much rather seen a traveldocumentary about the area than a movie that seems to endlessly drag. From a guy's perspective (at least, this guy's perspective) Letters toJuliet has little appeal. What it does have are constant emptyramblings about true love and destiny and enough sappy sentimentalityto give you three cavities before the film's end. If that sounds upyour alley, you'll enjoy this much more than I did.

Love story for any age

This review is from: Letters to Juliet (DVD) This movie is a light hearted chick flick. It drags a little at the begining but has a good ending. I liked it because it's hard to find a clean adult movie and this is something I would watch with my younger sister.

Truly banal piece of film

The acting was second rate (except for Redgrave), the plot wasunnatural, and the characters were unbelievable -- and not remotelyappealing to the extent that they were coherent. The entire film felt patched together. Rather than developing thecharacters, their motives and the audience's investment, the filmsimply told you who to root for and expected you to take it forgranted. Perhaps worst, the main character exhibited no laudablecharacteristics; there was nothing in her actions or intimations thatsuggested any reason to find her charming, intelligent or otherwisedesirable. Moreover, the male characters were simply cardboard cutouts-- you're supposed to like this one and not that one, based mainly onthe reactions of the female main character. Unless you are a teenager that is able to project heavily upon the filmto derive your enjoyment, I suggest you let this one pass you by. Themovie was forced, shallow and ultimately a waste of 90 minutes.

True Love does not Have Expiration Date

In New York, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is the efficient event checker ofThe New Yorker and her fiancé Victor (Gael García Bernal) is anenthusiastic chef that is opening an Italian restaurant of his own. They decide to have a pre-honeymoon traveling to Verona, where Victorwill visit his suppliers. Once in Italy, Victor does not give muchattention to Sophie, spending his time with the meetings. When hedecides to travel to Livorno, Sophie prefers to stay in Verona tosightsee the historical places. She visits the house of Juliet, wheretourists leave love letters and she finds a group of women called"secretaries of Juliet" that reply the letters. She joins the group andfinds an unanswered letter from 1957 from a British woman named ClaireSmith (Vanessa Redgrave) hidden behind a brick and she decides to replythe letter. A couple of days later, the snobbish and skeptic prigCharlie (Christopher Egan) visits the secretaries of Juliet and Sophieleans that he is the grandson of the widow Claire that has just come toVerona to seek out Lorenzo Bartolini after receiving the letter writtenby Sophie. She meets the old lady and they decide to search her formerlove together. There are seventy-four Lorenzo Bartolini in Italy, buttrue love does not have expiration date. Meanwhile the estrangedrelationship between Sophie and Charlie changes."Letters to Juliet" is a delightful romance highly recommended forromantic viewers. I have seen the trailer that is a spoiler indeed andI postponed the DVD to watch it later. But the movie is worth, specially watching the performance of Ms. Vanessa Redgrave, who isstill a very elegant and beautiful lady and gives credibility to ClaireSmith. The witty and sparkled Amanda Seyfried seems to have funperforming Sophie and Christopher Egan completes the charming younglead couple. For those like me that have never had the chance to visitItaly, the journey of Claire, Sophie and Charlie is an awesomesightseeing in this beautiful country. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Cartas para Julieta" ("Letters to Juliet")

Not what I expected...

Ok, so you go into this movie expecting a story similar to that of Romeo and Juliet, about two young lovers, right? Me too, but that's not what I got...When I saw the movie poster and trailers, I thought this was going to be a really cute romantic comedy! Of course, it stars Amanda Seyfried and some other cute guy along with her. I expected something at least loosely based on Romeo and Juliet, based on the title. However, once I started watching it (thankfully OnDemand!) I realized the story was going in a much different direction...Basically Amanda travels to Verona and meets a young man whose grandmother once had a love here in Italy when she was young. But they lost contact long ago. So Amanda, being interested in Journalism, teams up with the young boy and his grandmother to help them find her true love. So basically the "love" story is not really between Amanda and the boy, but between two old farts!! This would be fine, if the whole movie didn't focus on the grandparents and their love affair. I personally found the whole tone of the film very old and boring. Sure they showed the relationship between the young ones, but not that much. I couldn't even finish this movie it was so boring and completely dragged out towards the end.Overall, I found this movie to be misleading and just something totally different from what I feel most people would expect based on the advertising and poster art. And you would think that Amanda would have been the leading lady, not the old lady (I know, I know, she's famous too...). It was just a disappointment of a film that could have been really good, but instead it was just boring and I would not want to spend two long dragged out hours watching it again.

Surprisingly enjoyable

Now, I usually don't go for chick flicks, they're not my type of movie. It is a bit cliched in some spots and I was able to predict what would happen at the ending, but at the same time it was a rather enjoyable movie with a decent plot. I certainly wouldn't mind a lovely vacation in Italy...

I loved this movie!!!

I have to admit...I talked my 11 year old daughter into going to this, so I could see it. She is currently obsessed with the vampire movies/shows, so she was not initially too crazy about seeing this show. However, we were both glued to our seats. We didn't even leave to get refreshments (highly unusual). This was just a lovely story. The acting was charming. The scenery was stunning. Shows that a great movie can be made, without all the computer graphics and fancy stuff. Just a lovely story with lovely characters. Vanessa Redgrave is so wonderful, I get teary-eyed just thinking of how she played her character. I especially loved the relationship between her and her grandson. He is so protective of her and she is loving, yet at times impatient with him. So realistic...Now my next task is to talk my mom into coming to see it:) ...and maybe my grandma!! Worth seeing...leaves you a little teary, but with a smile on your face as well.

Romantic Comedy like Mamma Mia in Italy without the Songs

I was invited to a pre-release screening of this movie on April 7th.Amanda Seyfried once again plays a character named Sophie who travelsto Italy with her fiancé on a pre-honey moon. While apart she visits aspot in Verona where love lorn women write letters to Juliet. She findsa lost letter in the wall from 50 years ago and answers it. Clairreceives the letter and visits Verona with her Grandson and both meetSophie. The three set off to find her long lost lover. Much of themovie reminded me of Mamma Mia except set in Italy and without the ABBAsongs. Vanessa Redgrave plays Clair who long ago lost her husband andstill wears the ring her Italian love from years ago gave her. It waspredictable that Sophie would fall for Clair's grandson who is at firstobnoxious and their dislike is mutual. The film ends with the loversgetting married and the new young lovers also falling for each other.

Best movie Ive seen in a long time!!

I really wish they would make movies like this more often. Im am sosick and tired of seeing movies that are only concerned with being sexyor drunk or just plain goofy. Can we get any movies that are justsimply sweet.. The circumstances were cute and yes, while it was prettyobvious how it would carry along.. Who cares! Sometimes just watchingit play out is just as cute. This movie was just such a genuinely sweetfilm. Light and romantic without going overboard. It was just reallynice to sit down and actually be able to let my 7 year old sit with me.No profanity. No nudity. Just a very nice film. From a mother andChristian women's point of view I give it 10 stars for its innocence..Very well done! And I disagree with some of the other reviews.. Theacting was not bad and YES the actors had chemistry! =) Also amazingscenery.. Made me want to go to Italy! "Chick flick" yeah if your a biggruffly macho never cry gag type of guy maybe you should avoid it.. hehe But besides that No. Not just a

Good, funny and romantic

I like Amanda Seyfried, i watched Dear John from her but i didn't likeas much...i mean my problem was the movie actually, not herperformance. I didn't feel satisfied at all, i felt it was just anaverage drama that i can watch on a Friday night on the TV not incinema. The real problem with it was that i knew right in the beginningof the movie that John and Amanda Seyfried will get together. I don'tlike these kind of dramas a bit boring so what can i count on? Asopposed to Letters to Juliet i was amazed at how good (i mean reallygood) and funny it was. Throughout the movie i enjoyed every minute. Imean this is the way a romance-drama should be, isn't it? I like itwhen an ordinary guy(Charlie), bit cold (but not entirely) with alittle sarcasm in his character will hook up with a nice, kind andwarm-hearted girl (Sophie, alias Amanda). I love it when the charactersare developing throughout the story when you judge first the guy(Charlie again:)but you see that basically he's all right and then howhe's get on well with Sophie it's just good to watch,it feels real,it's touching and gripping. I'll definitely watch with my girlfriend.:)

Plain wrap romance.

Vanessa Redgrave plays fast and loose with the math. So much that shehas to claim to have met the Franco Nero character when she wasfifteen. Was it a relationship with Franco Nero or Roman Polanski? Amanda Seyfried is easy to watch. Again she plays a Sophie, this timeshe doesn't sing. Redgrave is reunited with Franco Nero, this time theydon't sing. ("Camelot")Christopher Egan is the weak link in the acting department. He comesacross as a stand in for Ryan Phillippe. The balcony scene at the endis too contrived and the set looked fake. The movie is harmless. A pleasant enough travel log of Italy, the kindthey don't show in theaters anymore. If you dragged your girl friend to"Iron Man 2" consider this the make-up movie.
