an average drama movie.
Set in New York City, Last Night is the story of a married couple thatwhile apart for one night, is confronted by temptation that may decidethe fate of their marriage. Joanna (Academy Award(R) nominee KeiraKnightley) and Michael Reed (Sam Worthington) are 7 years into asuccessful and happy relationship. They are moving along in their livestogether until Joanna meets Laura (Eva Mendes), the stunninglybeautiful work colleague whom Michael never mentioned. While Michael isaway with Laura on a business trip, Joanna runs into an old but neverquite forgotten love, Alex (Guillaume Canet) and agrees to have drinkswith him. As the night progresses and temptation increases for thecouple, each must confront who they are inside and outside of theirrelationship. Last Night is ultimately a film about choices - thechoice you make to be with someone, to give yourself physically andemotionally, and how to survive all three.this was the movie i didn't knew much about, i saw its trailer onYouTube and the little bit antisipation that kind of rised was just tosee one of my most favorite Hollywood actress Kiera Knightely performin this small movie and also the good looking Sam Worthington. wellthis movie belongs to just Keira. she did a fine job. this is a verysimple slow moving first feature about this couple who kind of aregoing through a low phase in their relationship. then they bothexperience a day or a night when each of them kind of make out withtheir former lovers. keira's character with a guy who she met in Parisfew years back and Sam with a girl he knew from college i guess and nowhis co-worker. Sam on a business trip get all that with her and duringthat Keira just run into this guy and they get closer too. so thismovie is based on this one night, last night as it say.well i usually like these kind of indie or off beat movies to watch atleast one every week or two because i like them and they usually hasthere own unique charm in them, they also are a change for me from theusual Hollywood flicks. this one, to be honest i didn't liked as muchas i should have or i thought i will but it was not bad or not verygood but just average. Sam worthington was looking good in thischaracter, a good choice for this role and i like him so much but ithink he could have performed better. he was just not there. keiraKnightely on the other hand performed reall well, she looked reallynice and appealing as always. she is an elegant lady. love her. wasbelow average in her role and was kind of above average, he smilesgood, i think i have seen him in some few movies.Direction of this movie is kind of not bad, an OK effort that shouldhave been better as their was this potenetial. screenplay could havebeen tighter and more even. beginning was good but towards middle itkind of gets off track but towards the end i kind of liked it. endingwas good, just adorable. cinematography was nice and other things too.this movie was slightly boring and uneven and the story was not wellwritten or well thought i would say that effected this movie so i willcall it an average off beat romantic drama that neeeded more than whatit had. characters were also not very likable or explained much. but ifyou are these actors fan or a die hard fan of these movies you willlike it.

The tension in this movie kept me interested all the way to the end
This review is from: Last Night (Amazon Instant Video) I was surprised that I enjoyed this movie so much. It has an underlying story that I've seen before, but this particular film adds an element of sexiness and tension that I didn't find in films with a similar plot. You can really feel the anxiety and excitement of the characters. The entire movie is about a short period of time, but it doesn't feel slow or boring. Overall, wonderfully composed and a good choice of actors. I definitely recommend.

Last Night
This review is from: Last Night (Amazon Instant Video) I will say that the acting was very good, but the final scene left me cold. He actually cheats; she decides not too, and everything is hunky dory? Or maybe not, but after investing my time I expected something more at the end. Had I known the ending I would never have watched the movie.

Worth watching
Rather enjoyed this film at the Rome Film Festival last night. Theatmosphere of New York by night and the soundtrack itself made it worththe half an hour delay getting in! The main performances are strong,Keira puts in a surprisingly convincing interpretation as the wife whomeets her previous love the day her husband is out of town with afemale colleague he likes. It discusses the nature of love, betrayal, marriage and sentiment in a thoughtful way, without the usual labellingof people as cheaters and victims. It should encourage us to realisethat life and relationships are more complex and that ultimately, nobody really belongs to anyone (however much we might like to think wedo). It's a shame these days that we only get to see the lives of thebeautiful, very well-to-do folk (in their wonderful apartments, sippingon fine wine) on the big screen as if temptation within marriage was aluxury that only the wealthy and obscenely photogenic can afford.Anyway, universal themes are dealt with well and it's good fodder for along conversation afterwards.

magnificent
This review is from: Last Night (Amazon Instant Video) Maybe it only speaks to those of us who have lost the great loves of our lives but this film captures the truth that women hold. The great secret love that we keep from everyone because we don't want the memory spoiled, or we know we can't be honest because it will hurt our current partner. Certainly, this film provides enough perspectives for everyone, but, as for me, I haven't seen anything that speaks so much to my truth as this film in years. Maybe since the first time I saw "The Way We Were" and realized it wasn't a happy ending.

Disappointed
I almost left mid-way.Honestly I was attracted by the nice poster with Keira posing in bed, hoping the movie to be a touch of sentiments. Just to find that she wasa disappointment in the movie. Bad acting, too pretentious, accents toostrong (can't blame her for that, but it's a turnoff to the role). Thewhole movie tried too hard to be arty (thanks partychic_99 for lendingthe term), but not getting anywhere; the overall sensation was justdangling nowhere, not touching no matter how hard they tried. It justseems that something concrete was missing in the movie, we never got toknow better of each role to build our linkage to it. With such astoryline, though nothing new, it could be a way more touching movie.Bad cast. Eva isn't as attractive as said and expected, she's not apersuading candidate to play the role.Ended odd.

Slow predictable one-line story
This review is from: Last Night (Amazon Instant Video) This movie is a good work as a "first" for a new director but nothing special outside that context. Its one-line story is fairly predictable and barely enough to fill up a TV sitcom episode, diluted up into amovie. The photography and music is four star, acting was also good except for the leading male. A big "Apple" logo on a laptop is an acceptable commercial but the long close up scene of a smoking leading actress is not OK in this day and age when even Phillip Morris is concerned about cancer.

Bonds and Commitment and Temptation
LAST NIGHT is a tightly woven tale that explores the psyches of fourpeople in one fascinating evening. This is the initial directing outingfor Iranian-American writer Massy Tadjedin ('The Jacket', 'Leo') whoalso created the story and the script: the film is so fine that wedoubtless will be hearing more about her. Joanna Reed (Keira Knightley) is a beautiful young writer married tocommercial real estate developer Michael Reed (Sam Worthington) in whatappears to be a happy marriage despite the struggle between twocareers. Michael takes Joanna to a company party and there she observesthe soft spoken Michael paying attention to one of his co-workers, thesensuous Laura (Eva Mendes), an act that Joanna feels indicatesunfaithfulness or at least suspicious behavior on Michael's part. Theseed of doubt is planted, Michael is leaving for a business trip toPhiladelphia the next morning with his coworkers Andy (Anson Mount) andLaura, and there is friction between Joanna and Michael that Michael'sreassurance cannot overcome. The next day as Joanna sops for coffee sheencounters an old flame from her time spent writing in Paris - AlexMann (Guillaume Cadet) - and they agree to meet that evening. Chemistryresurges and that evening as Alex and Joanna dine with Alex's publisherTruman (Griffin Dunne), both are questioned by Truman about their pastaffair, Joanna admits she is now married, and Alex is in a relationshipin Paris. The couple leaves and circumstances lead them to return toJoanna's apartment where they face their feelings. At the same time asthis evening is developing Michael and Laura enter a seduction dance:Michael is faithful to Joanna but the emotionally bruised Laurapersists in her attempt to pull Michael into her web. The manner inwhich each of these temptations resolves and the aftermath is thebrilliance of Massy's writing and direction: this is a story writtenvery much form a women's vantage and that fact allows each of thecharacters to become very well defined and credible. The quartet of actors is well matched: Knightley continues to mature asa fine actress, Sam Worthington breaks out of his stodgy shell to allowus to see a man driven by fidelity and tempted by lust, Eva Mendestakes Laura to a higher dimension of being, and Guillaume Cadet isundeniably an Alex who few women could resist: he has true star power. The method of pairing the development of the one night by flashing backand forth between the progress of the two couples in the dance ofseduction vs fidelity is extremely successful. This is a thinkingperson's movie and an introduction of a writer/director who already hasshaped the beginnings of a successful career. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp

Thought-provoking and emotionally involving - httpellenreview.wordpress.com
'Last Night', written and directed by Massy Tadjedin, is a film thatexplores the issue of fidelity and in particular the differencesbetween emotional and physical betrayal. A married couple, played byKeira Knightley and Sam Worthington, apart for one night, are temptedto be unfaithful. Worthington's character, Michael, is physicallyattracted to a co-worker Laura, played by Eva Mendes while on abusiness trip. Meanwhile, Knightley's Joanna runs into an ex  Alex, played by Guillame Canet.Over the course of the night we see Michael and Laura move closer tophysical intimacy and Joanna and Alex think back over the failure oftheir relationship and the reasons for it. The film causes the viewerto consider the value of marriage and the relationship that the unioncreates. A friend, Truman, points out to Alex that he could never takeaway the years Joanna has spent with Michael, because that is whatmarriage is  time invested, time that cannot be forgotten, lost, orreplaced. It is this central relationship between Joanna and Michael, and the commitment of marriage, that is tested and explored throughoutthe film. The question posed, explored, but never answered is: at what point issomeone unfaithful? When is that line crossed? Going for dinner?Kissing? Sleeping in the same bed? Having sex? Each audience memberwill judge Michael and Joanna in their own ways against their ownvalues, and it is one of the film's main successes that it does notattempt to answer the question for us. The ending is beautiful andperfect for the film  left open for the viewer to fill in, or not, asthey wish. The reason I found the ending so beautiful is because I had genuinelycome to care for the characters  particularly Joanna and Alex, thanksto wonderful performances from Knightley and Canet. Their chemistrythroughout is powerful, making their story both realistic andheartbreaking. The chemistry between Worthington and Mendes is lesspalpable, which is problematic, considering their attraction issupposedly purely physical and completely undeniable. Worthington'sMichael is oddly unengaging, which does make it difficult to believe inhis relationship with Joanna, but this is the only weak link I found inthe film. Some viewers have decided to see his character as anextremely masculine man who cannot be outwardly emotional, which couldexplain his performance, but which doesn't quite fit with the script.I finished the film and wanted to watch it again  I got the sense thatthere was more to read into, and more to see on a second viewing. 'LastNight' truly is thought-provoking and emotionally involving. One toseek out, watch, watch again, and come to your own conclusions on.More reviews at: http://ellenreview.wordpress.com/

Not too bad.
We all have a story to tell, we all have an epic story in our livesthat we believe is unique or so we think. Respect to those of us who dohave such stories and those of us who have come on top of it allconquering them. However when a writer begins to believe they have anepic script in the making, they ought to be sure that is most certainlyis noteworthy. Since this will have a ripple effect on ones reputationin the public eye. Massy Tadjedin writer and director of LAST NIGHT resonates with sublimebelief of confidence in tackling a very realistic social ball ofthread; Marital infidelities. Quite common in society and disgustinglya trend at times, disloyalty within a sacred matrimony is trait that isencouraged within some social groups and considered modern. I need notelaborate on this trail of thought since it is vastly discussed andquite openly accepted with social dating sites created for that"special lonely someone". I would like to think that one morning Massy Tadjedin woke up, made acup of coffee and stood over a bedroom balcony and looked out into thecity, closed her eyes and took in a deep breath and opened her eyeswith the concept of LAST NIGHT. Not the most original of conceptshowever a slightly different approach to the plot is adapted by makingthe lead couple falter between their decisions of "to do or not to do?" "The One That Got Away": this ought to be the tag line for LAST NIGHT.A very good directorial debut, LAST NIGHT is a story of the weddedcouple Micheal Reed (Sam Worthington) and Joanna Reed (KeiraKnightley). Joanna suspects her husband Michael with his colleagueLaura (Eva Mendez) who by no doubt has a certain alluring aura ofseduction that hangs above her head. Joanna who sees her husband andLaura for the first time at an office function together stirs up avalid argument of her doubts of her husband being attracted to Laura.Clearly men are not built to withstand a woman's crafty approach.Micheal who unconsciously admits to an attraction towards Laura doesnot help in anyway of consoling his wife and her doubts. To top all ofthis Micheal leaves on a business trip the very next day with Lauraleaving his wife back at home. Joanna who sets off to grab a cup ofcoffee the next quite coincidentally runs into "the one that got away"aka Alex (Guillaume Canet). Everything else is history! The beauty of the movie is her directorial and plot. It does notdiscuss the circumstances of the after. Instead it thrives on theconfusion, temptation and the guilt of the moments. This gently directsthe movie away of being an imitation; a parody.Although it's not Keira Knightley best performance it is one of thebetter ones. I loved her in POTC however her innocent looks did notappeal to me. Purely a subjective comment! Sam Worthington and EvaMendez on the other hand were quite convincing. They both build up acertain chemistry that involves passion and fear of circumstance thatintensifies the performance. I am guessing this is exactly what onefeels before they succumb to the moment. Guillame Canet was good butnothing commend worthy. This is how I see it, nothing more and nothing less.Title: Last Night Directed by: Massy Tadjedin Starring: SamWorthington, Keira Knightley, Guillame Canet & Eve Mendez Rated: R forsome Language Rating: 06/10 90 Minutes

Surprisingly fabulous

Two Kinds of betrayal
Film considers two kinds of betrayal: physically and emotionally. Forher, as a woman, controlling her body is far easier than her emotions. For him who is emotionally faithful, this is physical attraction whichis hard to avoid. So each of them have to face with their own way ofbeing tempted. They fail at this examination but they they don't wantto, so they do what they think is right. At the end some questions remained in my mind: first, does what theydecide to do, compensate their primary surrenders? And how much trulyrealized is this act of loyalty? Another question is that which one didthe harder job, her or him? A question I did not really cared to beanswered was whether they confess to each other or not. I think this isnot among the topics film is about and that's why it neglects to answerit. The movie considers the other man and woman as much as is needed, wecare about them yet not as much as the main couple. They seem not tohave as honest reasons as the main couple for what they want and do. Iadmire the way the movie avoided charged scenes and turned into smarttalks. I even liked the (in my opinion) false affairs, they were notdangerous and troublesome instead they were romantic, passionate anddesperate. There were a comparison mentioned in the movie where she accuses him tobe attracted to someone else which he innocently accepts and apologizesthen she herself faces attraction and acts upon it. This is aninvitation for not judging people for being tempted but for what theydo about it.

Eh, not so great
If you like watching hypocritical rich people in impossibly fancy New York apartments with glamorous jobs and equally glamorous looks do nothing in particular, then this is the movie for you.

Infidelity - what is it?
Fidelity. Who hasn't struggled with it? In a moment of crisis, in theembrace of stranger's body, or in the comfort of somebody we once haddeep feelings for, or while flirting with a co-worked we had barelynoticed before - who hasn't been tempted? And how many of us haveresisted to that particular temptation? I'm being frank when I say thatI think very few - maybe most of us can strain from physical contact, stop in time because we remember the person we truly love - very fewcan say they never cheated emotionally on anybody. Who has never had anemotional affair? A release with somebody who seemed to understand usbetter than the person we share our beds with? It's only natural forrelationships to hit those bumps - and the way I see it, infidelity isalways a sign that something's not working, but not always a mistake.Basically, it all comes down at how we deal with it. In Last Night we are presented with a couple hitting one of thosebumps. Not surprisingly, the cracks are detectable in both sides- ifsomething in your marriage is starting to fail, it is only natural thatit puts both partners on the verge of temptation. And then it all takescourse in a single, precise night, when both are presented with theopportunity. Michael is out of town with a co-worker, Laura, who knowsthe terms and remains willing to give in to their desires. Joanna, onthe other hand, runs into a former lover, with whom she apparently hasunsolved business with. Now it's up to you to judge: Michael swam in his underwear and had sexwith Laura; Joanna refused to have sex but spent the night embracingand talking with her old love Alex. Technically, only one of themcheated, but doesn't it feel like both of them did? Yes, like I saidbefore - cheating can't be reduced to a mere act of copulation. And, inthe morning, when husband and wife are reunited, both are terriblyaware that something has to be done concerning their marriage. Whattheir decisions will be, if that night was really the last, that wewill never know - the screen turns to black. But, once again, like Isaid above, how to deal with infidelity isn't an universal procedure. more reviews at www.whatilearntatthemovies.blogspot.com

A married couple stays apart for a night and love issues come in the way
I enjoyed this movie because it shows real life. There are manydifficulties and temptations in a relationship, especially a marriageand that could be a start for someone to watch it.Sometimes it's goodto get an idea of what really is going on in reality. We are so used tosee a happy end and foolish problems and many may not appreciate theplot .I believe though that the end is a little poor, but maybe on theother hand it lets the viewer decide what would he do in thecircumstance that was presented, because the characters can relate toevery common man or woman.I also liked very much the chemistry ofKnightley and Canet, but in my opinion Worthington and Mendes were notreally the best choices, not that their act wasn't good, it just didnot hit the eye. I also loved the location!

Extremely Underrated Movie. Brilliant Performances From Knightley, et al
OK, what is going on please? Here is an excellent, skilfully crafted, intelligently paced and well structured movie with a most complimentaryscreenplay, and it should of course be rated at 8.x out of 10. Yet, asI write it is barely rated above average. Sorry, but I have to knockmyself on the head a couple of times just to check that I am now indeedonly seeing 6.7 out of ten for a most excellent relationship themedmovie.I am not at all sure what is wrong with most people who've rated thismovie "a notch above so so", save for the usual obvious problems whenit comes to matters of 'most people'... Nonetheless, I am reminded thatmost people often get it right: Matchpoint was correctly rated, TwoLovers was fairly rated, Before Sunrise also got the high rating it sodeserved. However, here is a movie which is every bit as excellent asthose named movies, albeit being in its own inimitable way different, yet it is still currently (Spring 2011) faced with the travesty ofbeing so unjustly under-appreciated.Please watch this movie if the themes of modern relationships, loyalty, trust, and betrayal are of any interest to you, and you should find, asI did, that its insanely 'above average rating' is well short of themark. For this movie is a near masterpiece as a study of such themes. The performances of the lead actors/actresses, its screenplay, direction, score, production are all first rate. Don't miss this movieif you've a brain in your head, and if themes concerning relationshipsare of any interest to you at all. I also rated Matchpoint, BeforeSunrise, & Two Lovers very highly, in case you're wondering if my wordis worth following. Then you should also find it to be worth a far morerealistic 9/10

last Night
This review is from: Last Night (Amazon Instant Video) Kiera knightly normally has selected excellent movies to star in. I found this one very dull and boring-a complete dissapointment

but they are a soul-mates!!!
the love between Joanna & Alex is so great, so wonderful, so pitythey're not ending back together.... i can empathize with J & A... bothKeira and Guillaume played a phenomenal role, faithfully displaying agreat big love!!! can't say that I liked Keira movies, but now I havecompletely changed the opinion completely.... and I watched for thefirst time an actor Guillaume Canet, he's great! does anyone knows isthere will be Last Night part II? Juast one more - does anyone know whodesigned a dress that Joanna's wearing at the dinner with Alex andfriend??? so beautiful dress, silk dark blue... bye Very interestingstory about a sophisticated young couple enduring seven years ofmatrimony, call the bustling streets of Manhattan home. It appears theReeds have it all with a spacious apartment, fancy outfits andsuccessful careers. Husband Michael is a commercial real estatedeveloper, who often attends business trips while Joanna works fromhome as a freelancer. The Reeds are the epitome of perfection or so itseems. After attending a company party, questions are raised regardingMichael's loyalty. Joanna noticed a few rather friendly exchanges weremade between her husband and a striking co-worker, Laura (Eva Mendes),whom Michael has failed to bring up before. Following a fit of doubtand jealousy from his wife, Michael leaves on yet another business tripto Philadelphia with Laura. Putting her suspicions to rest, Joannaencounters her ex-lover Alex (Guillaume Canet), who she never mentionedto Michael before, outside a coffee shop. Is it fate or just acoincidence that on the day Michael leaves town, Joanna's old beauresurfaces? Left to face her own temptation, Joanna parades around thecity with Alex, attending a dinner party, a romantic roof top view andhis hotel room before he leaves for Paris in the morning. As Joannaflirts with her alluring past, Michael is playing with fire in Phillywhen things get a little too hot for him to handle. The cast did anexcellent job at portraying their characters. I watched this movieseveral times and will do again, cause every time I see something, somegood detail that I haven't seen before...

Beautiful portrayal of what a twisted thing the human mind is
This movie was a little painful for me to watch. As someone who hasloved, and lost, it was really very poignant. As I imagine it would befor anyone who has ever lost a spouse, partner or even friend totemptation. The story revolves around one night, one married couple, and thetemptations they face. Jo (Keira Knightley) is reunited with an oldflame, and struggles to resist temptation as she spends one long andeventful night with him. Her husband Michael (Sam Worthington), who isaway on business with an attractive colleague, is also faced with thepotential to give in to attraction while also giving in to infidelity. The plot seems simple enough, but it is actually so much more complexthan that. It questions marriage, commitment and everlasting love. Itis a movie that deals with boundaries, moral issues and so much more-in so few words. A large part of the film, in fact, was filled with abeautiful piano composition and muted footage of their night. It wasdelicate, but also a little haunting. And while I do think the endingwasn't entirely satisfying in terms of entertainment, I think that whenyou apply it to reality- it was really rather accurate.Perhaps, like most movies I see and review, it wasn't worthy of everyaward in the world- but I certainly think this film was heartfelt andprofound: and definitely worth an hour and 15 minutes of your time.

Just ok...no real arc to the story...
This review is from: Last Night (Amazon Instant Video) The movie is just so-so! There isn't much depth to the characters and the storyline feels one dimensional. There is no arc to the story, it's pretty flat. Not the worst movie but certainly not the best. The actors seem to do their best with what they were given. There really was no tension created that caused one to empathize with the characters. I would have rather paid less to watch it. Wait until it becomes a deal of the day.
