Another good one

This review is from: Kiss the Bride (DVD) You can't go very wrong with here! movies. I have several and I am glad I added this one to my collection. Good story line and the acting was not that bad. Very watchable.

Superbly written romantic comedy

While some of the performances are a little disappointing, this movie clearly derived from an excellent script by Ty Lieberman. The core story is both funny and touching and the humor is very good. Watch it, you'll like it.

A film as good as Shelter this one aint.............

((Here is my approach to obtaining/viewing/reviewing Gay tales in film form. Simply, it's seeking the holy grail of that genre, or looking for the "Addictive Film"---that movie one returns to time and again). Selection/purchase is based mainly on finding new releases by favorite directors/screenwriters and your comments/reviews at various on-line sites. Sometimes I feel correctly steered by you (the "Keepers" filling my DVD shelves), other times mislead, occasionally badly (the "Throwaways"----and I do toss 'em). Rarely, I come across the "Addictive," those watchable every couple of months or so (see below starred *** area for a list......and some of the "near-Addictive" as well). For some movies, I'll share a review with you, as follows. Thanks for sticking with me so far.)) I'll admit that on first watching I was mightily disappointed, particularly in view of what I consider C. Jay Cox's much better, gay-related work, "Latter Days (Unrated Edition)." However, repeat viewings of "Bride" have resulted in my initial impression taking on a somewhat more positive spin, as you may gather from other of my comments, below. In this work it seems the director and writer are trying to tell.....no, make that show.....us that sexual preference (if not also orientation), is not just a black or white, a yes or no thing; rather it's a continuum and can change over time. Still, even if you consider that theme to be well handled, in no way does this production come close to achieving/maintaining the high interest levels being attained by that other recent gay film, "Shelter," directed by newcomer Jonah Markowitz.}If by now you're wondering, this movie......if it's anything......is a "seriocomedy." It is NOT a gay romance (although at an earlier, teenage time in our two male leads' lives, there might have been the beginning spark of romance). No, come to think of it, even then it was more likely to have been just youthful lust. So, with that out of the way, you might ask how this production works as a semi-serious comedy. On this, all I can say is that in such a genre, comic timing is everything, and I suspect that comedy performance has not been in the background of either of our male leads (but older, supporting cast members Tess Harper and Robert Foxworth keep the chuckles coming fairly reliably). Karner / O'Shea almost get it on the button at times.......but a successful comedy needs more than "almost" when it comes to timing. Still, what Philipp Karner (Matt) does do well is deliver sincerity---and you're going to like him for that. And then there's James O'Shea (Ryan), who effectively gives us a "confused sweetness"---you'll fall for that as well. Oh, yes, and he also "puts out" for us in the form of a good looking face and an excellent body (and er, ahem, that includes a great ass and a nice package---more than enough there to have shared with a Karner, who could stand a "boost" in those departments). As for Spelling, I'm not a "Tori-fan," but she does come across as miles better here than she was in another gay film, "Trick." Along with secondary character actress Amber Benson, we also have Steve Sandvoss, and both are "carryovers" from "Latter Days." Sandvoss' character and a "buddy," played by Michael Medico, are given fairly frightful parts in the opinion of this viewer. Even so, it's too bad that whoever put together/approved the Cast List for the film's Closing Credits didn't know enough to realize they'd gotten these two player's character names reversed (that must make one feel good as an actor). One last point, for those of you who might keep up with such things: Karner does get from O'Shea a lot better lip-locks (both in quality and number) than does Spelling. How about them apples? PS--This DVD won't get tossed out in the trash (as some have been)----but it's hardly likely to make it onto this viewer's "Addictive" list*** either. Oh, and we appear to have a couple of Ty Lieberman fans here; which is fine---although they don't appear to have reviewed anyone else's films at this site. ***Other films which are habit formers: "Just a Question of Love" / "Brokeback Mountain" / "Boy Culture" / "All Over the Guy" / "Second Skin (Unrated Version)" / "The Man I Love" / "The Man of My Life" (perhaps for older, gay-thinking viewers) / "OH HAPPY DAY (DVD MOVIE)" (do youselves a big favor and see this one) / "Fashion Victims" (only on Region 2 disc so far---try Amazon.comUnitedKingdom). ****

Read the Script!!!

Sure, there were problems with the movie, but the script was dead on. Keep your eye on the first time screenwriter, Ty Lieberman. You're going to see big things from him!

What a awful movie!

What can I say? This was one awful movie to watch. I am normally notvery critical of gay cinema in general, due to the fact that most areusually low-budget, but this really pushed me up the wall. I mean, isthis was has happened to gay cinema? Haven't gay producers anddirectors learned anything from Gus Van Saints and Ang Lee's films?.Just having to sit through the entire movie was like being in adentist's chair and having my wisdom teeth extracted. I kept on prayingfor moments where I would feel any sort of connection with any of thecharacters, but that never happened. Most of the charactersperformances were just not very convincing. It was like watching one ofthose badly produced made-for-TV movie specials on a local access TVstations. I cannot tell u how greatly disappointed It was seeing thisfilm after being a big fan of Tori Spellings other works and thedirectors last work on "Latter day saints." It was definitely not worththe wait. Definitely, a few hours of my life I will never get back andwill certainly not be purchasing it on DVD.

Kiss the Bride (2007)

The movie is nice, the director is for sure good. Maybe in comparison to Latter Days it has a bit more the feeling of low budget movie, but it's not something that weight too much on the quality. It has the merit to show what it can be the life in a small town for a gay boy; when you feel alone in your same home, maybe friendship could be mistaken for love, and when you are forced apart from that love, it becomes more perfect than what it really was.

Duh!

I know its just a movie but after 10yrs! come on already... The bridegroom was ...ah.. lifeless. If this is a romantic comedy, then the comedy part doesn't come out.

Made Me Smile a Lot

This review is from: Kiss the Bride (DVD) Amusing, fun, semi-sexy, and just a plain good movie. If you want a light hearted, feel good film try this one. It does have its moments of seriousness, but on the whole its a romp that will keep you entertained.

One Word AWESOME!

KISS THE BRIDE is simply one of the most outstanding romantic comediesreleased in 2007. It will surely bring back memories... memories thatone may cherish or regret for the rest of his life. I am damn sure thata lot of normal straight guys can relate with the film except those whoare in total denial for whatever reason they may have, and of coursethose who unfortunately didn't have the chance of experimenting duringtheir adolescence.Surely the film has some flaws but forgettable ones that theydefinitely will not ruin your viewing pleasure. The portrayals of Tori,Philipp and James are just amazing. The emotions that run amongst thethree particularly during the confrontation were realisticallytouching. The supporting cast also made sure that their contributionsadded more colours to the feature and even some unimportant scenesbecome as important as they added certain flavours that tickle theviewers and at the same time make some uncertainties certain.Watch out for a roller-coaster ride in the end from approximately01:25!

Flawed but enjoyable.

This was enjoyable, if not exactly a "feature" - it looked like it wasshot for TV (especially the toaster graphics for the opening credits!).I thought the script was good, but the direction was very uninterestingand static (C. Jay Cox, whose script for "Latter Days" wasn't thisstrong but who did well with "Sweet Home Alabama", fumbled the ballbehind the camera). The acting was uniformly strong among thesupporting cast and two of the three leads were quite good. Pleasantsurprise? Tori Spelling was among those two. She didn't play too broadand achieved some real moments of emotional connection to her characterthat made you feel for Alex.In the end, it's the small things that work best in this movie - thelittle human moments between characters outside of the craziness aromantic comedies conventions demand. The script could have used apolish, but overall this is an enjoyable movie that I'd be happy tocatch on cable again in the future.

Few things keep it from falling flat

Unfortunately, like many other gay-themed movies I've seen, this lacked credibility, particularly between the two main characters in the present-day portions. I often felt like I was watching an infomercial or a low budget reenactment in a documentary. Monotonous acting and directing with recycled jokes/bits made this doomed to fall flat. The plot twists came across as attempts to rescue the story from being a carbon copy of previous sit-com or made-for TV. movie plots. However, a few things keep it from being tossed into the pile of marginal gay-themed movies. The flashback sequences are exquisite. Outstanding acting/characters created by Tori Spelling & Steve Sandvoss are worth the time to watch the rest of the film.

Light and not too challenging

"Kiss the bride" is one of those comedies you can watch during lazy afternoon, when there's nothing else to watch. The storyline is not complicated (a gay is invited to a straight-wedding of his old-flame, first gay love). Of course bride-to-be appears to be a very nice, uber-friendly girl (Tori did her best here) so our gay hero is really torn (as well as his straight mate). If it sounds slightly familiar to you, don't look any further than this film itself. In one of the dialogues pops-up a title of another "wedding" comedy and that is "My best friend's wedding". Yep, "Kiss the..." has some resomblence to its predecessor, unfortunately is not equally wonderful. Anyway, although it's not on my shopping list, I don't regret the time I spent watching it.

My Best Friends Brides Kiss Part Two

In Kiss the Bride, they make references to My Best Friend's Wedding.Oh, if only it was that good of a movie. At least they acknowledged the obvious copy of the much better script.I'll give 'em kudos for that. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie waschoppy, poorly edited, poorly acted and predictable. That said, it wasstill a well-mannered, well-meaning light rom-com romance and if theevening's free, it's worth a shot.Much like the foresaid My Best Friend's Wedding, (and let me throw in alittle bit of the absolute ferior Big Eden) a gay male returns homeonly to find his previous boyhood crush marrying (gasp!) a female. Willhe become friends with the bride-to-be? Will he win over the heart ofthe previous fling? (And yes, it involves prior sexualchild-experiences.) Will any of this be original or suspenseful? In allhonesty, the finale at the wedding is pretty shocking and enjoyable. Itmakes up solely for all that's been done previously. So, even if you'returned off by the ho-hum premise and mid-section, stay for the closing.Even the shocking twists from resident fag-hag Tori Spelling. The jokes are…just okay. The homophobia tolerable. But some of theout-there scenes, such as what the title suggests and the ignorance ofthe characters were a tab bit off kilt. The mistakes were well known –they mention the hometown in Arizona, but then switch it to New Mexico, for whatever reason. And as much as I'm not a Tori fan, she really doessteal every scene she's in and is the most enjoyable character in themovie.Overall, again, it's worth a shot. I liked how people who are reallywhat they are, gay/straight/whatever, stay that way. Otherwise, peoplemight confuse the "lifestyle" as a "choice." And we know better. Right?

Could have been better

This review is from: Kiss the Bride (DVD) My partner and I watched this last night with high expectations. After all, Latter Days was such a wonderful movie. Big disappointment. Some of the acting was not up to par, and I kept waiting for some really good dialogue between the characters, but it never happened. My biggest beef with this movie is the scene where the gay guy is making out with the fiance of "the love of his life". That was so wrong; it didn't work with the rest of the movie. I lost all respect for him at that moment. It didn't make any sense at all, and more or less ruined what was otherwise a fair movie.

07 May 2013

it was ok

i thought this movie was decently a good movie. the acting was pretty good but i mean there are a lot of movies better than this. this isent a big movie and probably no one has ever heard of it. but it was good so if your a loser that sits on the computer reading reviews this was a good movie.

Kiss The Bride

This was a great gay themed movie. Though I liked Latter Days, I thought that the director improved on this movie. the flash backs added a deeper feel to the movie, and Tory Spelling was great as usually. Again loved this movie
