The uncredited excelance of film

Why is this film so underappreciated? Man, everyone has tocompare it to Reservior Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and say it doesn'tstand up. This film is more expertly and more beautifully directedand filmed than the previous two. Yes, pulp is the best becausethe story is outrageous, but no one is greatful for the art that JackieBrown is. It deserves a lot of credit, because it is not a film thatcan be made easily like the stuff out now. This is a perfect film, tobe looked at with awe.

Qs Best

Rarely do I see a movie where all the characters are real. They are injackie Brown. Not only are they real, I actually like most of them (evenOrdell, although he scares me to death). The script is a gem -- smart andfunny with great dialog. And the acting -- Pam Grier, Samuel L. JacksonandFred Ward are absolutely perfect.I can watch this movie over and over at the end smile because I know thatatleast someone in Hollywood still knows how to make movies!

Quentin Tarantinos worst load yet.

When I watched this movie it made me want to make a load on my VCR. Thestory licked, and there was no nudity, so i was all like this is asausage fest of men and JB's. So don't watch it unless you stick yourbeef in the VCR. And the chick in this movie was a beast, she lookedlike she had too much beef in her face, like a beefy fellow, on thechronic. I nearly slipped one in the case before I brought it back, just so that those jerks at blockbuster could get a taste of what i'mpacking. Sammy was a dirty beef eater, who taps meat. And Jackie Brownwas also a little package handler, who gives the mailman a peek at histight one every night.

Plodding, tedious, dull and boring

How on earth anyone could take an Elmore Leonard book and turn it into one of the most excruciatingly boring movies ever made remains beyond me. Tarantino had no sense of pacing whatsoever on this disastrous excursion. The movie moves at the speed of mammal evolution. Quentin failed at adapting the book. He sucked all the life from the novel then filmed the corpse. Avoid it at all costs, because it's 2 and a half hours of your life you'll never get back.

Viva Tarantino!

After the box office and artistic success of "Pulp Fiction" QuentinTarantino made a brilliant and unconventional another image, which isindisputably "Jackie Brown". The film tells the story of the titleJackie Brown, who has been tricked into carrying drugs. Her questionleads two policemen, Ray Nicolet (Michael Keaton) and Mark Dargus(Michael Bowen). Ordell (Samuel L. Jackson), for which Jackie wasbringing the money, is now in trouble because they do not know whom totrust. As with Tarantino, or propels something great, or do crease. This timehe succeeded again - no doubt created a film worthy of most attention, which is due to the original screenplay beats most of the production ofthe same decade. Excellent dialogues, fantastic climate, great actorsand amazing Soul "The Delfonics" make it to this film will always comeback with the greatest pleasure. We deal here with cinema entertainmentin its pristine form, so to say that it is a principled one of mypaintings to kill boredom. This amazing story of a woman after 40, whogot mixed up in no small trouble, flirting with the guarantor MaxCherry (Robert Forster), having on his head a dangerous offender andhis sidekick Ordella Gare Louis (Robert De Niro) is something not to beexpected by Tarantino, because where's the blood, where the place forsomething stronger? This is not a typical Tarantino movie, because itis much more subtle than his other productions, but that's the geniusof this film. Of course, do not run the typical flavors, which occurfor example in "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" as black humor orirony great dialogues, but no doubt it is the most subtle and mature interms of "moral" the work of Mr. Q. Those who do not like the work ofQuentin Tarantino, should "Jackie Brown" view immediately, and thosewho adore this man, most probably be disappointed because they do notget here this pastiche, which is the main symbol of his other works."Jackie Brown" is a movie for everyone, both for those who want to tearafter a tired day, and for those who simply want to see something good, something that will be made in memory. This film shows that in today'slife, to survive you have to be sly and cunning. It is close headlamp90s cinema and i will put this movie alongside such "cults" of thoseyears as "The Shawshank Redemption," "Forrest Gump," "Silence of theLambs" and "Pulp Fiction". "Jackie Brown" contains everything thatshould be the work of cult. An excellent cast, great music, greatscript and directing, of course, climate, and with finesse. I recommendwith all my heart.

Jackies DVD Debut

Jackie Brown finally has made its DVD debut five years after its original release. The film was greatly anticipated, as it was Quentin Tarantino's follow-up to his groundbreaking Pulp Fiction. The film was an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch moving the location from Florida to California. The movie was met with mixed reviews at the time and suffered in comparison with Pulp Fiction. The film is a good movie with some great performances. Much like he did with John Travolta, Mr. Tarantino pulled another great acting job from a forgotten 70's icon, Pam Grier. In the title role, Ms. Grier plays the character with the sass and grit that made her famous in the blaxplotation films she is famous for. Another B-movie hero Robert Forester gives the performance of his life as a tired bail bondsman who falls for Jackie and helps in her scheme to screw both a gun dealer and the Feds. Mr. Forester earned a much deserved Academy Award nomination for his role. The cast is first rate including Samuel L. Jackson as the gun dealer, Robert DeNiro playing somewhat against type as a dimwitted, associate of Mr. Jackson, Bridget Fonda as Mr. Jackson's pot smoking girlfriend, Michael Keaton as one of the Feds and in a small part, a young Chris Tucker who meets an untimely end at the hands of Mr. Jackson. As with Pulp Fiction, the dialogue is sharp and Mr. Tarantino's selection of music is dead on combining such 70's r&b gems like Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street" and Bloodstone's "Natural High" with Johnny Cash's "Tennessee Stud" and the Grass Roots' 60's pop classic "Midnight Confessions". While this movie is not up to the level of Pulp Fiction, not many movies are. Mr. Tarantino has fun with the film and overall it is a highly enjoyable movie.

Definitely NOT Tarantino standard.

This was all in all, a poor film, it is too long and too boring. thescenesare lengthened which is good as long as the dialogue and the conversationisinteresting, which it isnt. Tarantino`s next film should be better thanthisbecause it hasnt much to aim at which is the good thing. However there is aflip side to that, if this is the standard that Tarantino will beproducingthen we dont have much to look forward to from him in the future which isgreatly disappointing.the plot is shabby and is complex but the problem is that half thetime you dont know where you are in the film.An excellent cast doesntrejuvenate a picture which is clearly lacking, a waste.

Very unique movie.

Recently I've become a huge fan of Tarantino, and this was one of the 2movies of his I hadn't seen(can't find the other one) so I rented it. Iloved Samuel L Jackson in his role and De Niro was funny. The plot wasunique, sometimes confusing, and barely ever boring. Samuel L Jacksondoes a great job as a gun merchant who will stop at nothing to reach$1,000,000, and this movie just shows why he is one of my favoriteactors. De Niro is quiet, but for some reason I found him really funny. No, this movie is no Pulp Fiction, but to me that's kind of a dumbremark, it means nothing besides this movie is not one of the greatestmovies of all time(which you should not expect out of it), which isperfectly fine. Anyways, a very good movie.8/10.

Could have been better

This surprising adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch marked a newphase in Quentin Tarantino's career. Without the agile rhythm, the nervousand accelerated edition nor the comic and brutal characters that consecratedhis previous works, Tarantino delivers a contained film, centered in theexcellent cast's performance (led by two veteran actors who, although famousduring the seventies, were in frank decadence, Pam Grier and RobertForster).Robert De Niro is excellent as a cruel and merciless murderer, andin spite of having few lines and time on the screen, he should have beenreminded by the Academy for this performance (the scene in which he killsBridget Fonda is memorable) . The same can be said about Samuel L. Jackson, who plays with generous doses of humor and meanness the dangeroustrafficker. Over all, Jackie Brown is a modest and curious entertainment, but that could have been better.

Jackie Brown

For a Quentin Tarantino film, this is pretty clever, even if it doesn'tmix up scenes like his others have. Basically Jackie Brown (GoldenGlobe nominated Pam Grier) is a flight attendant caught by the copssmuggling gun money at the airline she works for, along with somecocaine. Eventually though, Fed Ray Nicolet (Michael Keaton) and LA CopMark Dargus (Michael Bowen) decide to team up in order to arrest thearms dealer she works for, who they don't know, Ordell Robbie (GoldenGlobe nominated Samuel L. Jackson). She has to choose to tell the copsabout the arms dealer, or get her freedom with Ordell suspecting, orshut up and do some time. That's when she meets Max Cherry (Oscarnominated Robert Forster), her bail bondsman, who falls for her. ThenJackie comes up with a plan to play the cops off against Ordell and theguys he works for, Melanie Ralston (Bridget Fonda, Peter's daughter andJane's niece) and Louis Gara (Robert De Niro), among others, and walkoff with their money, but she needs Max's help. Also starring RushHour's Chris Tucker as Beaumont Livingston and Lisa Gay Hamilton asSheronda. The scenes in the department showing the different times ofthe payoff from the three sides of the story, Jackie, Melanie andLouis, and Max is really engaging, The Simpsons even spoofed the sameformat. Samuel L. Jackson was number 11, and Robert De Niro number 2 onThe 100 Greatest Movie Stars, he was also number 50 on The 100 GreatestPop Culture Icons, and he was number 5 (along with Al Pacino) on TheWorld's Greatest Actor. Very good!

SMOKE A FATTY AND TURN IT UP!

I've heard it before - "Yeah, dude, Pulp Fiction is totally baadassss, and I even saw Resevoir Dogs, once. But Jackie Brown was totally lame. Tarantino was just trying to cash in on Pulp Fiction again." Shut yo' mouth, fool, and listen up. Go see your guy, buy yourself a half ounce of some stony ganj, and warm up with some sweet soulful funk. Try the Godfather's "The Payback", or Ike & Tina's "The Hunter", or maybe Blues Explosion's "Acme". When you're good and ready, roll yourself a big ol' blunt and smoke till you can't walk. Then turn on Jackie Brown, and turn her up! 'Cause baby, this beautiful movie is one of the 10 greatest films of all time. She'll get you lifted. She'll move you and go down smooooth, like Courvoisier Cognac, like Al Green. You take my advice, and you won't be dissatisfied.

Exactly marvelous

This review is from: Jackie Brown (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (DVD) I don't really understand that this film didn't have any success but I belive it's a really wonderfull one.Great actors like Samuel L Jackson, Pam Grier and Robert de Niro, shouldn't have risked their prestige for a piece of trash. Please don't expect a romantic film or a superproduction, but an exciting film of the life of one human being that found herself involved in a big trouble, dressed with such wonderfull actors and directed in such a creative way by Quentin Tarantino. If you don't like to know that some characters will be shooted ... then this isn't your film. If you like blody scenes, this isn't either your film ... if you cannot resist to have sexual scenes .. this have 1 ... if you like creative characters Jackie Brown is a smart character and I adore the way she solve her problems.May be I will find some other 500 or 1000 films in my life that I can consider more artistic than this one, may be there are millons that have spended more economic and technology resourses, but I will hardly find 10 films that I enjoy watching more than this.

Probably Tarantinos best.

I'm not a real big fan of Quentin. Frankly, I see him as being one of themost overrated faces of Hollywood and the prince of swooping other people'sideas. That's just my opinion, but it's also many other's. Jackie Brown was workable for its decent finale. A wrap-up which is quitedifferent from other Tarantino movies. You came away feeling satisfied withwhat happens to the characters. (Each one got whatever they deserved, in agood way or a bad way depending on who they were) And unlike other Tarantinomovies, the characters here were richly textured, and much more believablethen the foul mouthed, Lee-Marvin luvin' thugs in the ladder. Pam Grier makes a wonderful comeback as a Flight Attendant who is caughtsmuggling coke and a half a million of her boss' money. The boss is SamuelL. Jackson, who was so despisable and evil as the illegal arms dealer thatanyone else in the movie was pixy dust. If she helps the bust, there'simmunity on the deal. Not a perfect movie, but the performances were very good. Overall, niceadaption of Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch."

Overlong, stretched, too much

From popular director Tarantino comes this overlong adaptation ofElmore Leonard's novel "Rum Punch". It appears Tarantino has attemptedto make the film as clever and as in-depth as the original material.Yet in trying to include so much, he has stretched this pic too far.Far too much time is spent on characterisation (probably the entirefirst hour). The plot therefore, is neglected until it is too late forTarantino to gain our interest. By the time he starts compiling thenarrative, we have tuned out. Our director was too hung up on hisamazing characters and what they had to say (a Tarantino weakness whichserved him well in "Pulp Fiction"), and his introductions went on toolong.Tarantino fave Samuel L. Jackson is his usual enigmatic self, but is inserious danger of being typecast. Richard Forster's subtle performanceis far more effective, and Pam Grier is solid. Good support from RobertDeNiro and Bridget Fonda. The funky soundtrack helped, but Tarantino's over indulgence did not.Could have been more impacting with twenty minutes cut out and morefocus on the plot.Saturday, March 6, 1999 - Video

Gets better and better, both by age and as the story progresses

It's easy to dismiss this film as one of Tarantino's lesser popularfilms. But if you look closer, it's actually really good. This is afilm that can't be compared to Tarantino's previous two movies,Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. It features elements from both films, but is overall a more mature, straight-forward film. It's a characterdriven film, like any other Tarantino film, however it is slow, but ina good way. Nothing's rushed, we get a lot of time to study thedifferent characters. The dialogue is witty and clever, just like PulpFiction and Reservoir Dogs. Then there's the realism, which isexcellently portrayed. People act and talk like it was just a normalday, which makes it an absorbing experience, and will make you forgetthat the actors are actually acting, and that there's actually a filmcrew behind the scene. Then there's the ensemble cast. All six of the main characters eachhave different point of views, watching them do what they do is simplyfascinating. This is one of those films where the ensemble cast worksreally well. All of the characters have their part in the story, nobodyis miscast. It features Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster,Michael Keaton, Bridget Fonda and Robert De Niro. Robert De Niro isvery amusing, his performance is the best (out of all the greatperformances in the film). It's fun to watch him in this film just forvalidating the fact that he doesn't always get type-casted. Pam Grierand Robert Forster are excellent as well, and Samuel L. Jackson nailshis role, which is somewhat identical to his character in Pulp Fiction, though that's not a bad thing. This is another must-see Tarantino film - Moose finds this film worthyof a 10.

Name of the blues song?

Awesome movie with an awesome soundtrack. One question though, in the scene where Sam Jackson and Chris Tucker are walking out of the apartment and down to his car to get in the trunk, there is a bluesy song playing in the background, it is also played as you select features on the dvd menu, does anyone know the name of the song and who plays it? It is not on the soundtrack cd.

Tarantino sees off the backlash

Quentin Tarantino is clearly finding it difficult to follow the phenomenalsuccess of "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction", which made him the hottestwriter-director of his generation. In the six years since then this is theonly time that he has returned to the directors chair. "Jackie Brown" -his "difficult third film" - seems to be his response to criticism of his firsttwo films that he could only make movies about other movies, but not reallife. He cleverly anticipates the backlash by adapting a tightly plotted, character driven Elmore Leonard novel, still set in his familiar world ofLA low-lives, but keeping to a minimum his trademark comic-book violence andpop-culture references, while emphasising the novels more mature themes -such as ageing and the feeling of time running out for the middle-agedcharacters. The result is a slick, interesting, if slightly draggythriller, which ultimately lacks the freshness and audaciousness of thoseearlier films.Tarantino still has his maverick streak though, as displayed in histrusting of Pam Grier to carry the entire movie. The casting of a middle-aged black actress with no box-office clout in the lead role can't have been easy inan industry notorious for it's scant regard for actresses after they reach 30.You can bet that the studios would have at least insisted on the safety ofa Sharon Stone or a Demi Moore. But Tarantino, as he did when castingTravolta, stuck to his gut-instinct, and once again it proved an inspiredchoice. Grier, bringing with her the memories of her 70's blackploitationmovies, gives a convincingly tough, wise and sympathetic performance.Actors love to work with Tarantino because the roles he gives them will beinvariably jucier than usual. That is once again the case here, althoughthe casting isn't quite as inspired as it was in "Dogs" or "Pulp" (or "TrueRomance"). Samuel L. Jackson is reliably good - if hardly stretched - asan unscrupulous hustler who is not as smart as he thinks he is, and BridgetFonda has fun as his conniving beach babe girlfriend. Robert Forster jumpsat the chance to play a role with depth after years in made-for-tv hell.Robert De Niro though, despite providing some amusing moments, isdisappointingly wasted as Jackson's dim-witted partner. At times this feels like just another thriller, but every now and thenTarantino reminds you what all the fuss was about. Jackson's brutal(off-screen) dispatching of Chris Tucker in the boot of a car, as the cameraslowly cranes up into the sky, is masterfully conceived and a scene, whichis subtly built up to, involving a teasing Fonda and a p*****-off De Nirois as unexpected and as shocking as anything Tarantino has done before. Byrefusing to make a Pulp Fiction 2, Tarantino may have missed out on someeasy money, but this film has enough to suggest that he will be more thanjust a flash in the pan.

You wont recognize anyone.

Having become a household name with "Pulp Fiction", Quentin Tarantinofollowed it up with the somewhat confusing - but definitely worthseeing - "Jackie Brown". As the title character, Pam Grier getsinvolved in a series of lowlife events in LA. That's a loosedescription, but you may have to see the movie more than once to reallyunderstand it (I only saw it once).I had never heard of Robert Forster before this movie came out, buthe's quite impressive here as cop Max Cherry, trying to use Jackie toaccomplish his goals. Possibly the most mind-blowing thing in the movieis Samuel L. Jackson's character Ordell Robbie. A low-level criminalwith a pony-tail (yes, the silver screen's baddest motherf***er sportsa pony-tail), he almost seems like the sort of person who should havebeen played by Denzel Washington - but make no mistake about it:Jackson does a good job with the role. It seems that Bridget Fonda'scharacter didn't have much purpose of being in the movie; ditto RobertDeNiro's character. Michael Keaton's character is mostly interestingwhen you realize that this was his last good movie until "White Noise"last year. All in all, this isn't the Tarantino movie that I would recommend aboveall others, but it is worth seeing. Jackie is quite a woman.
