they threw the script out and sent the director, editor and actors looking for it
The story seems classic at the beginning, then it goes wild towards theend. The plot simply loses attraction, 4 or 5 new characters are justthrown into the movie, and, as others have said it, you really don'tconnect with anyone in the movie. This being said they still could havepulled it off, except that the acting is poor, and the cut is justawful, it just goes from one scene to another with no fluidity, plusthe action scenes at the end are cut even worse. Plus a school teacherwho gets home at 10:40 pm every night???? It seems this movie wasthrown together without a script... I would say Scary Movie 4 has abetter chance at becoming a horror classic. I don't see how criticscould rave about this movie, it gets 7.4 on IMDb, 6-th sense gets 8.2???? give me a break guys.... this is a 4.5 movie at most.

below average and not scary
when i watched this movie I thought I would probably have troublesleeping tonight (mainly for the fact that I'm the biggest coward thatyou've ever seen) but i also thought it would be an interesting movieto watch (at least not alone) so we watched it with the lights off andfor the first 30 minuets and it was alright even though it was a bitcliché. but towards the 2/3 of the movie things became cliché for theworst of reasons. the characters became even more dull than theyalready were and downright silly. even the usually enjoyable nerds ofmovies like these were poorly executed. i don't really see what was soscary about this movie. pedo women who stole my look, guy with clawsand old people. the ending reminded me too much of Michael Jackson'sthriller. so yeah in conclusion an overrated cheap flick which is sobad it becomes funny.

Creeping Terror at its modern best.
There are the people who think this movie isn't scary because thereisn't enough blood and gore. In fact, there is none at all. Then thereare the true horror lovers who appreciate this for what it is. Thismovie knows how to terrorize you without the cheap 'Saw' type take onthings. Ironically the director James Wan is in fact the director ofthe original Saw and the writer from that film joins the ride too. Thenthere is the Paranormal Activity influences in the beginning of thefilm. Again this movie is in fact produced by the Director ofParanormal. So we have an all star crew here.People say this is a rip off of classic horror and the Poltergeist. They must not know the difference between 'rip off' and 'homage'. Thisfilm will creep you the hell out depending on what type of horrormoviegoer you are. This movie is one of the best horror movies to comeout in the past 30 years. Do not be fooled by the 'PG-13' rating. Thishas more and far better scares than the recent R rated horror movies.I recommend that you see it in theaters for the best terrifyingexperience. I saw it twice in theaters. I chose it over Scream 4 and Idon't regret it. The entire auditorium jumped and screamed at the rightmoments.Sound really plays an important role in the scare tactics of thismovie. The musical score will send shivers down your spine. The jumpscares are really good and timed perfectly. Something recent horrordirectors should take note of. The movie takes the 'less is more' typeapproach in the first half. Then the ghosts and demons show themselvesin the final half. Some may find the second half a letdown compared tothe masterful beginning but I found it horrifyingly terrific. From the beginning to the final clip I found myself sitting therefrozen with fear, and I'm a pretty hard to scare guy with modern horrormovies. The feeling of fear every person had when they were a child andwere afraid of the dark. This movie will stay with you long after yousee it. It will bring back those feelings of fear in the night andbeing in a dark room hearing a strange noise in the corner of the room. This film has some of the most horrifying images and ghosts ever seenin the past 20 years. But lets not forget the slightly funny momentstoo. There are certain scenes that will also make you laugh just torecover from the last scare only to be drowned out again by anotherjump scene. I have seen this movie 4 times now and each time it stillgets me. Even though I know what will happen next I still feel theterror in my chest and spine.I recommend watching this in the dark. It is also a good idea to watchit with other people. I have a feeling this movie will be a Halloweenparty favorite. Try and sleep at night without feeling like there areeyes watching you after watching this movie. I dare you.Oh and if you are prone to night terrors or easy fright then takecaution when watching this. You will never forget this movie. The DVDhad a comment saying 'The most terrifying film since The Exorcist"/ Ido not one bit doubt that comment at all.Stay after the credits, or just fast forward them on the DVD. You'llget a tiny extra scene.

Insidious is chilling
This is a well directed 'family in a haunted house' movie that reallyhas an air of creepiness. The main characters put in convincingperformances and there is a strong air of menace attributed by finecamera-work and direction as it pans every room in expectation ofsomething sinister in the offing. It has a realistic normal everyday feel as the newly arrived familycarry a few anxieties on settling in, the father being a teacher busywith marking exams, the mother of three left to cope with unpacking, manage the kids and prepare the house. The creepy atmosphere leaves you feeling spooked and on edge and thestrong sense something invisible and menacing is watching the occupantsof the house within the house. I don't think i've ever seen a filmwhere i am actually believing that this really is a haunted house, itpermeates throughout and is totally convincing. If you want to be scared out of your wits this film will take youthere. This is a house that looks and felt haunted and there are manyheart stopping, jump out of your seat moments. This truly is a spinechilling film. I watched it alone in the dark, not a good idea. One downer is you are left wandering if the male investigators were inthe right prffesion.

Truly Horrifying
After seeing the trailer for the movie, I really wanted to see it inhopes that it would be a truly scary movie, unlike many movies thathave come out in the past few years that are not at all scary. Afterwatching this movie, all I can say is this: I have never been morescared in my life. The movie does a wonderful job in getting theaudience genuinely terrified. While many films put a few scary momentsthroughout the film and leave the rest of the movie to be used for"build up" to an ultimately un-horrifying moment, Insidious is prettymuch back to back terror. While the ending of the movie can petty muchbe seen coming, and there are a few moments where the acting in themovie lags a bit, the overall feel of Insidious is one of true terror. The film is by far one of the best (if not THE best) PG-13 horror movieto date. Don't watch if you are not ready to scream!

When a pair of goofy (and unamusing) ghostbusters and their medium boss (Lin Shaye) show up, Insidious takes a tragic turn toward the stupid.

Strong, extraordinarily disciplined horror flick. No cheap scares here.

Good, but not great.
I'll start out by saying I don't like most horror movies released inthe last ten years, but Insidious is an exception. I don't really wantto spoil this movie for viewers, but I must say this isn't veryoriginal because it has the same haunted house, possessed child themethat's been featured in countless movies before. However, this movie isso much better than the recent teen slasher flicks forced upon us.I'll say that this film has some genuine scary moments and creepyimagery, but the acting was hit and miss. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrneboth did a good job, but they both seemed to lack enthusiasm. The demonic imagery is pretty freaky, and it will make you jumpslightly at times.I think this movie is enjoyable but not a classic.

Its plot, ripped off from The Amityville Horror, shows so little psychological or occult logic that it exposes its own sheer dumbness as just a series of spookings.

An Insidious Waste of 100 Minutes of My Time
A little boy astral projects while he's sleeping. His parents don't know this even though he draws pictures of it and they are right on his wall. Apparently the last time he astral projected he went into the "Further" where he gets stuck for some reason. There are lots of dead people there just sitting around. Dead people also want to get into his body but so far they have only succeeded in scaring his mother. Although many times she doesn't even scream - like when a small boy/man suddenly jumps out of a cupboard right in front of her and runs off. She just looks. The husband was an astral projector when he was young but he doesn't remember. His mom is played by Barbara Hershey so I kept comparing this to The Entity which was awful also. Anyway she took photos of him and an old woman was always in the background of the photos getting closer with each photo. She wanted to steal his body. So after that he could not stand to get his picture taken. Even though he doesn't remember all this. So, did his mom show him the photos? That wouldn't be a good idea. The photos had nothing to do with the woman wanting to steal his body, the astral projecting did. Anyway, if you like wasting your time, and enjoy getting really angry at stupid, unsurprising endings, watch this movie!

Whatever flaws it may have, Insidious scared the hell out of me.

Just Plain Terrifying...
This movie was great. Not only did it scare the crap out of me, it alsoentertained me as a movie. The acting was great and the script wasgreat. What really stuck out to me was that the characters did not makestupid decisions. Once a couple of odd things happened, they were outof that house! Another thing I liked is that there were not any cheapscares. Whenever the creators took the time to build up tension nothingstupid would happen. It's not their friend that was actually in theirhouse, it wasn't a cat making the noises, etc. The movie was actuallyscary too. Some of the images are still with me weeks after I watchedthe movie. Don't go expecting it to be like Saw with tons of gore, goexpecting scary like the Exorcist. People who don't like this movieprobably just don't like it because of the PG-13 rating. But seriouslyit does not make a difference.

Could have been truly great- some spoilers
The first two acts of Insidious were nail-biting, tention-filled and truly spooky. Even the opening title sequence was creepy. Everything was spot on. The acting was great, the mood was perfectly set, you even had the creepy-looking child actor. The music was subtle and really set the tone, the newly moved-into house was filled with paranormal potentional. And it was even moreso magnified when we find out it really has nothing to do with the house! Quick recap: A family moves into a huge, obviously creepy(but not overly so) house and then something strange happens to one of their sons, Dalton. He ends up falling and hitting his head but the next morning, he never wakes up. Doctors can't explain why he won't wake up from the coma and nothing seems to work. The family moves on, eventually caring for the son at home. That's when the actual weird stuff starts happening. The mom, played by Rose Byrne starts seeing things, hearing noises. Naturally she thinks the house is haunted though her husband, played by Patrick Wilson needs a bit of convincing. Things keep progressing to the point where she pleads to leave the house. He agrees and they move. Of course things don't die down because it has nothing at all to do with the house they are living in. This is where the movie slowly starts heading downhill. They of course bring a paranormal specialist in on things and she explains what is happening to them, and their son. She seems to know an awful lot about these things and before we know it, a séance in the kitchen comes along, things are revealed, more odd stuff happens and finally, we get to the thrilling, super scary climax. Well, actually it really isn't all that frightening. I suppose if you scare easily, then maybe I can see this film as being an issue. Again, that's the problem with the final act. The fear-factor is all but gone. The mystery surrounding the film had been solved and there's not much left but to throw in a million different type of ghosts and beings and gloomy smoke and makeup. The actual ending is pretty neat, but some people may see it coming.I truly wanted to love this film and hoped it wasn't going to become a cliché like just about every other horror movie out there today. But things were revealed way too early and all the excitement and intrigue was gone. That is one reason why The Others is still one of my favorite thrillers ever. Not one drop of blood in that entire movie, but utterly spooky from beginning to end. I guess its true that the best ghost stories are where you never even see the ghosts. Sometimes, it's just overkill. Case in point- Insidious.

i loved it
I really liked this movie. Has some great parts that will make you jumpa little. I was scared watching this movie. If "drag me to hell" scaredYou in theaters then this one will too. I also love how they made a SAWreference in the movie. I love Patrick Wilson ever since I saw him inangels in America and hard candy. Docyourself a favor and give thismovie a shot. I really don't think you will be disappointed. The movieflowed really well and just as long as you pay attention and aren'tbrain dead, everything should make sense are the end. There is a daemonthat looks a lot like that red from black faced character from starwars too Haha.

This movie is dumb
Not at all good. The part with the Darth Maul look alike behind the father, had me and my friends cracking up a lot though. This movie is dumb to the extreme. The non scariness factor is amped to 11 with tired jerky camera work that seems to accompany most of the recent horror flicks, (seriously what is gonna keep people up at night about twitchy jerky camera effects and characters, the stupid non-smiling twins to instant smiling twins scene was dumb times dumb to the dumb power, featuring dumb, amplified by dumb, bathing in a vat of dumb, stirred by a dumb person with the dumb stick. Shining's encounter with slightly out of focus dead twins in an "empty" hotel vs. the insta-smile twins haha) for a laugh or a nap, dial INSIDIOUS.

a visitor.....
For once, an original horror film from the USA, comes, and with nogore, or cctv footage, this turns out to be one of the most chillinghaunted house/boy films to be released in a long long time.Dalton is a boy who can project himself out of his body when he isasleep. The trouble is, he's been doing it for so long that demons havenoticed and want his physical form.He ends up in an inexplicable comatose state and the family, thinkingthat the house is haunted, move, but there troubles follow. The filmdoesn't rely on the performances of Wilson and Byrne, although they arevery good, the film relies on all out scares, and even though they arethe sort that contain shrieking strings from the soundtrack, and arepredictable, they are delivered here in droves. From the makers of Saw, you would expect gore, but here, there is none, even though the Billy puppet is featured in one scene, there is nogore, and this is another thing that is refreshing. There is also a lotof humour in the film, even though it's serious throughout, there willbe laughs to had.The film does borrow heavily from other films. Most notably, TheShining, House, BBC's Ghostwatch, The Exorcist, and Signs. The first hour is pure mayhem, and has to be one of the best times ihave spent in a cinema with an audience. But it goes a littleridiculous toward the end, when Wilson travels to the further, this iswhere the comparisons to the 1985 'classic' house come in.Both the main protagonists in these films have to go into another'dimension' to save a loved one.But these days, who really cares about stuff like this, when you areentertained for the duration of the film and not bored once. All in all, it's a great horror film, filled with dread, with a goodending, and one things for sure, you'll never see Darth Maul in thesame light again.

On the right track....
Insidious started out as a standard haunted house/possessed movie andwas doing a great job of it. It was using a simple but effectiveformula of slowly building up the scares. Something that a lot of newhorror misses is the fact that the anticipation leading up to thescare, the suspense, is where the movie is made. The first half of themovie did this very effectively. Then, all of a sudden, they tell ashort and thrown together back story as to why everything is happeningthe way it is and go totally in a different direction. The second halfof the movie is mostly gimmicks with one obvious twist after anotherand even gets hard to watch at times. While the first half of the movieis almost great, the second half is quite awful. Another great exampleof an opportunity missed.
11 May 2012
PG 13, and it shows.
First half was good, it was fun and intense.Everything after the "nerds" arrived was cheesy, unoriginal, and plainstupid. The only thing this movie has going for itself are loud violins and"BOO!" scenes. Conclusion; A movie to bring your girl to and have her hold on to youas you laugh at the horrible costumes and idiotic scenes. If you arelooking for something with a deep storyline or something to keep youawake at night, skip this. If you are looking for a ton of jump scenesand an idiotic plot line, then by all means, go see this movie. Don'texpect a good plot or anything of the sort though.
