Gullivers Travels
This review is from: Gulliver's Travels (Amazon Instant Video) I was bored watching Jack Black's performance in this movie. A waste of money and time. But for $1.99 I'm glad I didn't spend $9 at the movies.

Save your money!!!
Dont bother to buy Blu-ray or DVD. Dont even rent. If you can get a free copy from your friend may be.its an awful movie. Disgrace to the original novel.

There aren't many reasons to see Gulliver's Travels. In trying to fill several different identities, it fails at all of them.
23 May 2012
As so often, this diluted Gulliver's Travels is presented as if it were a children's story, clearly influenced by similarly defanged versions of Alice In Wonderland.
22 May 2012
Jack Black's amazing comic energy, as seen in films like 'School of Rock' and 'Nacho Libre,' seems a bit muted in 'Gulliver's Travels.' I expected more from him here.

Any of the social commentary in Swift's original version is completely lost, replaced not by more up-to-date satire but by lazy pop-culture references and tired antics.
21 May 2012
The basic problem with the picture isn't that it's crude or offensive; it's merely flaccid and bland.

A funny film...
This film is silly but it is escapism. I enjoyed it. Jack Black isgreat and Emily Blunt is on form. The remaining cast is highlycompetent. It is not as formal as the original literary text but ituses the basic idea to make an entertaining film. My five year olddaughter has watched this film over and over so I know it appeals tothe very young but it has humour on two levels which is characteristicof of a good family film. I am not sure why others have rated it sopoorly. It is not equal to classics such as 'Gone with the wind' but itis worth a watch. But if you really cannot stand Jack Black then doavoid it as he has the same old characterisation. Personally, he doesamuse me..but your view of him will dictate whether you like this film.Hope this helps.

Ship really does happen...
Jack Black is one of those actors/musicians that you either like somewhat or hate with a passion. There really is no middle ground. For me, Jack Black the actor will best be known for Be Kind Rewind, the Kung Fu Panda films, Saving Silverman, and High Fidelity while Jack Black the musician kind of lost his mojo after the first Tenacious D record (which is still a favorite amongst friends). Truth be told, Black seems to be at his best when he's not confined to the limits of family entertainment or at least has some room to stretch in a PG-13 environment. Gulliver's Travels actually feels like a Jack Black movie despite its family friendly rating, but that still can't save the fact that it's a fairly horrid experience overall.Gulliver (Black) works in the mail room and comes to the realization that he's not going anywhere in life. He finds himself on the way to The Bermuda Triangle after informing the office travel editor, Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet), that he's this supremely gifted (plagiarized) writer. On his journey there, Gulliver wakes up on the island of Liliput which is filled with nothing but tiny people. As a giant amongst mere men, Gulliver sees this as a chance to start over and be the "big man" for once. He soon learns that the size of a person isn't always an accurate portrayal of how big they really are.For a movie being marketed towards children, it was kind of shocking what actually made it into the film. There's an entire conversation centered on the term, "lame ass," which is blurted several times throughout the entire two minute conversation. Can you remember the last time Mickey Mouse called Donald Duck a "dumb ass?" I sure can't (that "South Park" episode doesn't count). After a fire breaks out in Liliput, Gulliver thinks on his feet er...with his groin and puts out the fire by urinating on it as well as a handful of tiny people in the process. When all else fails, when you have a problem you're having a difficult time resolving, just piss on it as well as everyone around you. That's pretty much what you'll take away from the segment. And did they really squeeze the phrase, "skeet skeet," into a family movie? Really?! That's pretty insane. What's even more ludicrous is what the film followed that part of the conversation up with; "ship happens." It sure does, Gulliver. It sure does. You can probably accept the way the movie begins; mostly because it actually looks and feels like the way Jack Black wakes up every morning. Walking around without pants on, re-enacting Star Wars with action figures, and mixing coffee and creamer in the filter to make coffee all seem like something the Jack Black people have gone to see on-screen the past fifteen years would do. That's kind of the only good thing about Gulliver's Travels. It does feel like it's Jack Black approved and authenticated by the man himself, which it probably was since he also produced it. The movie is based on the Jonathan Swift novel of the same name, which was written in 1726. But the movie gives no on-screen credit to the novel and that should be the first sign that you should probably abandon ship before you even board. The bottom line is Gulliver's Travels isn't funny. Not even a little bit. It's just toilet humor and expensive special effects colliding together while Jack Black shoves his goofy antics down your throat. The guy passes out after he falls on his backside, which is honestly something I've never seen before this movie. While Black does look to be having fun in the role, it just doesn't translate very well. These tiny people build Gulliver a life size home in less than seven days, which doesn't seem very logical. Forcing Horatio (Jason Segel) to recite Prince's "Kiss" while trying to woo Princess Mary (Emily Blunt) probably should've been more entertaining than it was. Jack Black can sing. He has the talent and the ability, but he's one of those performers that's better heard rather than seen. Him singing "War" at the end of the movie really should've just played over the credits rather than be an in-movie, choreographed with tiny people music video. Was Emily Blunt being awful on purpose? She was just horrendous at times. Plus she dropped out of Iron Man 2 for this? Somebody explain that to me.Gulliver's Travels is more than likely just as bad as the unfortunate soul that actually sat through it told you it was, if not worse. Jack Black does try to carry the film the best that he can, but it all crumbles once he literally and figuratively urinates all over everything. Throw in a giant robot and Black's butt crack and it's immediately labeled as something you should probably never sit through. Ever. Although featuring some well done special effects, any little bit of good Gulliver's Travels once had is massively outweighed by bad acting, weak story points, and humor that's more disgusting than it needs to be.

What fun!
This review is from: Gulliver's Travels (Two-Disc + Gulliver's Fun Pack) (DVD) I have never been a Jack Black fan but I fell in love with him in this movie. Great for the whole family.

Very Funny!!!
I thought this movie was really funny, and they gave it a massiveupgrade and made it appeal to the kids more because the original storywas written in 1726. They added Star Wars, Guitar Hero, and Twilightreferences. Jack Black stars as Lemuel Gulliver, a small guy in themail room with big dreams. While trying to impress Darcy, she sends himto do a story in the Bermuda Triangle. During a storm, he arrives inLilliput where he is the size of a giant and the townspeople are small. He befriends Horatio to give him confidence to get Princess Mary tolike him. In all, I think this is a very fun movie to watch. I highlyrecommend GULLIVER'S TRAVELS!!!

A minor crime against cinema a major crime against literature!
First things first: if you are watching Jack Black's version ofGulliver's Travels because you're a fan of the original book, you mightwant to skip it altogether. Gone is the literate and satirical edgethat has kept the story in print for over two centuries. Instead wehave a loud, brash, very "Hollywood" retelling in which the nearest weget to satire is when Black topples backwards and squishes aLilliputian in his butt-crack. There are some very mildly amusingmoments in this film, but overall it is a regrettable example of thedirection major American studio releases seem to be heading. That is tosay: over-marketed, self-satisfied, bland nonsense, made with businessin mind and not the art of film-making itself.Mailroom slacker Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) works in a huge Manhattaneditorial office. He spends most of his time quoting movies, playingGuitar Hero, and wishing that gorgeous hotshot travel editor DarcySiverman (Amanda Peet) will notice him. One day, Gulliver realises thathe has spent the best part of ten years doing nothing with his life soto impress Darcy he takes on a minor assignment investigating strangegoings-on in the Bermuda Triangle. During the trip, Gulliver's boat iscaught up in a strange oceanic vortex and flung into a strangeother-worldly kingdom known as Lilliput. Here the inhabitants are nobigger than insects and Gulliver appears as a fearsome giant. Soon hebefriends the King (Billy Connolly), the Queen (Catherine Tate), thePrincess (Emily Blunt), and an honourable prisoner (Jason Segel). But aslimy and untrustworthy military man, General Edward (Chris O'Dowd),refuses to buy Gulliver's tall stories and plots to rid the land ofthis new giant once and for all .The fact that Jack Black is merely playing Dewey Finn from School OfRock, and transposing the character to another film, is just thebeginning of this film's problems. The overall acting talent wastedhere is enough to make a grown man cry. Connolly fails to raise asingle smile as the Lilliputian king, while Blunt (whose career so farhas been refreshingly sure-footed) is reduced to the level of a ditsybimbo. This will do her career no favours whatsoever. Segel, Peet andespecially O'Dowd are all equally guilty of frittering away theirtalents in moronic roles. In terms of finding positive things to sayabout the film, at least the special effects are pretty good, and thereare infrequent amusing moments (mainly references to other films, orsprinklings of toilet humour). Overall, though, that's about aspositive as I can be. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the conceptof modernising Jonathan Swift's novel, but not if it's to be reduced tothis level of cheap vulgarity and simple-minded storytelling.

3D?
the 3D dosent exist. I have 15 3D blu rays and this is by far the worst quality i have seen to date. The movie itself is painful.

A low-grade comedy that'll have Jonathan Swift turning in his grave.

Meh...whatever
To be honest this movie started out being honest Jack Black Working ina mail room clerk named "Gulliver," if you want a silly little movie towaste your time for a couple hours I'd say watch this otherwise takeyour two hours and watch elsewhere. I'm sure this movie has nothing todo with the book "Gullivers Travels" Although I haven't read the bookso I have no idea if it does or not I highly doubt it though. It'salright for a silly little movie to waste 2 hours with, but don'texpect something great. It's OK but not that great. There were some pretty funny moments in the movie, but this is one ofthose movies you watch once for kicks and giggles

Gullivers Travels (2 Disc Set with Gullivers Fun Pack) (2010)
Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black is a waste of money. The Jack Black is wrong actor for that movie or maybe he cannot act anymore. I used to love movies with him but he over played himself, his acting are terrible even my children does not watch him. His guitar hard rock play is annoying and acting is not real life like.

Rude - Not for children
I have never written a review of a movie before but the reason I am doing so today is becasue this movie is blatantly mis rated. We would never have chosen this movie if it was PG13 or if the trailer had shown some of the vulgar scenes in it. We would have instead gone to Yogi Bear. But I feel the public is purposely being tricked to increase ticket sales and it really pisses me off. We try hard to really make sure our children don't watch garbage and this movie was garbage. So if you are a parent who cares what your children watch...DON'T GO TO THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!Let me explain..........My husband and I decided to take our 5 & 7 year old children to this movie because after watching the trailer it seemed like a kid movie. We couldn't have been more wrong. We started to worry after seeing the previews... and then the movie started and we soon realized this should have been a PG13 movie. It was clearly not a kids movie. There wern't any children in the movie and the whole theme of the movie was inappropriate for children. The topics this movie covered were things like, "how to be lazy", "how to teach your son to treat women like ***** so they will like you", and "learning how to pee in public and then honor it". Piss on a perfectly good society and turn it to ***** was the symbol of this movie. Even if I didn't have my kids with me, I wouldn't have enjoyed it. It wasn't funny unless you think a grown giant using his penis to pee out a fire and all over people in the kingdom is funny. Then after that ridiculously stupid scene they had to throw in more stupidity by showing a large statue of a fountain just built showing a man peeing into a pond commemorating this event. My daughter looked up at me blushing with her hand over her mouth.I could go on and on but I won't. I just wanted to get my point across and warn parents about this movie becasue it is being advertised towards children.Concerned mom

It was funny and hilarious at times. Beautiful costumesand it really made you feel as if you were back in that era. It is cutehow everything comes together. I totally didn't understand the posterof the movie; however, once we watched it ...... the only thing wecould do was read as fast as we could to catch all the logos..... it isworth almost watching it again (right away that is) to try and catchthem.
