Wow...what a disappointment. (
I'm sorry. This is the first time I've ever joined this site but myboyfriend and I are so disappointed with this movie we HAD to stop itwithin 20 minutes of the beginning. I mean - It's just like the lastguy said. It was exhausting to watch. The jokes were not clever eventhough the cast is notorious for being hilarious! All I have to say is"RE-DO". Guys seriously... I can't believe how NOT funny this was.Sorry. You check it out and see yourself. I HOPE you enjoy it because IHOPE someone out there does. And by the way. IMDb. Why the hell do Ihave to be negative for ten freakin' lines? That is stupid. I justwanted to share my opinion. Actually I just wanted to WARN peoplebefore they waste 20 minutes of their lives waiting for a movie thatshould be clever and funny that it (Grown Ups) is not clever OR funny. Why ten lines? Who came up with that? Fire them. Is that ten linesenough?

Entertaining!
This is another entertaining movie made by Adam Sandler and the gang.If you are not a fan of his, you won't like this. This is what I call atypical Sandler film. There are plenty of usual gags such as flatulenceetc. I liked this because this is a "feel-good" comedy and I have seenevery Sandler movie pretty much.Five old friends reunite for a weekend to mourn the loss of theirfavorite basketball coach. Their idea of a fun different than what mostpeople would expect. The acting is good. These actors always have been good entertainers. Iliked the scenes between Rob Schneider and that old lady. Those werehysterical.Overall, this is a great comedy. I hope Sandler makes more like thesebecause I felt great after watching this. I rate this film 9/10.

Immature
Lenny Feder: Higgy! Marcus Higgins: Hey, what's up, Lenny? Buddy, Ithought you were gonna start working out. Lenny Feder: What does thatmean? Marcus Higgins: Um... you're fat. Lenny Feder: No!In Grown Ups, Adam Sandler and comedians Chris Rock, Kevin James, DavidSpade, and Rob Schneider play old school chums meeting at a resort tohonor their deceased coach. The set up is contrived to let somewell-known comedians say a few jokes, and weak dialogue is bestexemplified by the above interchangeÂmind-numbing humor that barelymakes sense. If you organize a treasure hunt, you'll find a couple ofpuerile laughs coming out from under a hot rock. And some flatulencejokes as well, not to forget a grotesque bunion. When James hurtles into a tree from a hanging rope and the audienceroars at the pratfall, then you know you're in summer smiles, a comedywithout heft except for James and Sandler, who have been to the honeywagon a few too many times. It's harmless family summer fun with the laughs just a few more thansay last year's Death at a Funeral, also starring the acting-challengedRock. Perhaps seeing Schneider wear an ugly Elvis toupee can help youget over seeing Steve Buscemi act as absurdly as could be possible fora once-dignified actor. Wait! Wait! Schneider sings the Ave Maria at the funeralÂthat may bethe film's lowest point. Wait again. The recurring jokes aboutSchneider's elderly lover Gloria (Joyce Van Patten) are as ageist asany I have ever heard. The boys just don't let up.It is certain that this vapid comedy is a more pleasant experience forthose former SNL comedians than the audience that endures theirsophomoric comedy.Ah, summer. Are we to be saved by Tom Cruise, of all people?

Couldve been so much more
With the sheer volume of comedic talent attached, you'd think thiswould be an easy home run in terms of laughs. Unfortunately, most ofthe jokes were cringe-worthy. I've liked Sandler in past films, and hehas some good lines here as well....which is the problem. Y'see,Sandler co-wrote the script with another fella, which leads me tobelieve Sandler wrote all the good lines for himself, along with givinghimself a beautiful wife. This is all my theory, but it's strange howhe (out of all 5 leads) didn't have many problems with his personallife.Nevertheless, the interaction between them is solid at times, awkwardat others. I actually liked Spade the most since it felt like he wasn'tdelivering his lines like a robot. Another issue was when all 5 weretogether, it felt more like they were doing standup for a large crowdinstead of playing off each other naturally and doing some, I dunno,ACTING. Add to the fact that Rock looked bored the entire movie and wasgiven nothing to do, and the stupid preachy message at the end, sillyold folks jokes, and you have probably the most disappointing movie ofthe year, given the actors involved.

Dont expect much and you will enjoy it
Adam Sandler movies have never been smart and witty, so I wasn'texpecting much when I went to see Grown Ups. It is better than hisrecent attempts but still not great but going in with low expectationshelped me to quite enjoy the movie. The movie is about 5 former school basketball players who return totheir home town for the funeral of someone close to them. Theinteraction between these former team mates indicates that althoughthey have achieved in life they still haven't fully grown up.The comedy is quite lame most of the time but there are a few laughs tobe had and the supporting characters are quite good who includes MariaBello and Selma Hayek. They did seem to be having more fun making themovie that we did watching but I brought my dad along with me and hereally enjoyed it. It is definitely not a great movie but for a lightlaugh after a hard day at work it is quite good.

Grown-Ups, The Movie for Teenagers
Now Grown-Ups is an excellent movie to teenagers. The movie is centeredaround them. Hot girls, funny jokes, sports, etc. Anyways I've read acouple comments and the people who hate on this movie are probably outof their teen years. My opinion is Grown-Ups is a very funny comedy. Now sure it doesn't have a plot but that doesn't make it stop frombeing a good movie. Plus the PG-13 rating is perfect because littlekids and teenagers can watch it.I also have to ask why do people complain and complain? Multiplereviews comment about the marriages in the movie. No way someone thatfat can get someone that hot! Really? It's a movie. I mean look atAvatar? No one says "Hey, Pandora isn't real! Let's hate on it!" Moviesdon't need to be realistic they just need to appeal to people. Itcertainly appeals to me and to many other people. That's what I think people can argue with me but that's their opinion.

Lacked quality control
I am fan of Adam Sandler and Chris Rock (comedian, not actor). I'vewatched all of Sandler's movies but lately his movies just aren't asfunny to me. It's either cuz I'm growing up or there's a serious lackof quality control in his films.I got the impression that the script was written in a weekend and thenshot without testing the jokes. There were LOTS of jokes but many felt forced or just went over myhead. The family moments were forced and felt awkward to even watch. Icringed and felt bad for the actors.I think the circle of friends have what it takes to make a greatcomedy, but I think they'll need to work harder. I know they can dobetter cuz there were a few Kodak moments in there - classic Sandlerhumor.

KEVIN JAMES, STEVE BUSCEMI, DAVID SPADE, CHRIS ROCK, ROB SCHNEIDER, ADAM SANDLER AND SALMA HAYEK
GROWN UPSI am a huge Kevin James fan and have not missed one of his films at the theaters, so of course I had to go see this film. Add in that I am a huge David Spade, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and Rob Schneider fan and I just can't have a bad time at this movie. Now I will say from the get go this film is not for everybody and I have noticed that some people just don't get this film. This film is basically what the title says, growing up, and well finding your self again as well. This film was not meant as one of Sandler's usual over the top comedies and it is not one of is more serious films either, this film is some where in between. It also helps if you can identify with the characters in this, and it also helps that there is a scene in which Salma Hayek rivals her snake dance scene in "From Dusk Till Dawn" for her sexiest look ever. The film is about five childhood friends who are reunited after their school basketball coach passes away. It is here that they decide to spend the weekend together and reconnect with the families that are driving them crazy. Here is the thing about this film it is really not only about the grown ups finding themselves again but about their kids becoming kids. If you get these going in you will have a good time with this flick, I also love that the friends spend the whole time shooting one liners at each other and making fun of each other. Sure it sounds mean but that is exactly what me and my friends do so I could identify with the characters. Now this is all in good fun trying to one up the other and is absolutely a real thing that real friends do, well at least with guys not sure about that ladies. But I will say that my girl joins in with us so I can say some of the women out there do this at least.Written by Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf and directed by Dennis Dugan you know what kind of film you are in for. But it is with the script and the direction that things do go wrong a bit. The script is lacking a little if you are looking for an over the top laugh a minute comedy, but if you are looking for a more realistic one this is for you. The one thing that is not up for debate is the performances, they are top notch here. I'll start with my boy Kevin James and once again he is perfect here. He plays a family man that seems to be living a great life but has a wife that still breast feeds his 4 year old son. David Spade much like is role on the Happy Madison produced TV series "Rules of Engagement" is the loner playboy type still looking for women all the time.Chris Rock plays a stay at home dad who is underappreciated much like any stay at home parent, never understood that in this society. Rearing kids and taking care of basically everyone of the family member's lives as well as the house is the most important job. Don't get me wrong whoever is the person in the family out there working to pay the bills and feed the fam is just as important, and well that is what Rock's part of the film is saying. Both jobs are vital in the family, don't know why that turned into a rant. Rob Schneider did a great job here as well as the Earthy, one with nature type who happens to love older women, much older women. Of course Adam Sandler plays the big shot Hollywood guy with a fashion designer wife, so of course they are living very well. Also one of the greatest actors ever Steve Buscemi is here in this flick along side Colin Quinn and Tim Meadows as some jealous jerks from the boy's past. Now while the boys have been promoted as center stage in this film the ladies play just as big a role in this film and do so wonderfully. Joyce Van Patten, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello, the hilarious Ebony Jo-Ann and of course the always super hot Salma Hayek. They are all excellent in this film as the wives and in Ebony's case mother in law of the guys, all do an excellent job. But I can't help but tell you that at one point in this film Salma Hayek is in a cheerleader outfit with pig tails and well just looking like every boys fantasy. This scene rivals her snake dance scene in the excellent "From Dusk Till Dawn" has just plain great to watch, I need a drink of water.Well now that we have that out of the way I must say that I had a great time watching this movie. I took my girl and her Nieces and nephew to see this flick for part of her Birthday week, my Bro came as well. And yes I said her Birthday week, I decided I would do something special for her each day out of the week for her. Any way maybe all of them adding to the atmosphere mixed with I am a fan of all of these guys and well mixed with Salma Hayek looking so, well any way I enjoyed it. Where is that drink of water?

Great movie, funny, not stupid humor
What I liked about this movie is that nobody tried to over shadow anyone...it was an even balance between the five leading cast members. They come across as five guys you'd believe would be best friends...they jell together and interact well. None of the jokes were corny or forcing it down the viewers throat...some of the comments were spoken softly and tossed in almost as a side-note or possibly ad-libbed. You have to have some intelligence to get some of the jokes, which seem to flow throughout the entire movie without ever slowing down to deliver any of the funny.Aside from being funny, it's also a feel-good movie. It made me smile, it made me laugh. It shows that there are good people in this world and friends and happiness are what really matters. Slow down, enjoy life, chillax! To those that gave this a bad review, you obviously don't like movies of this genre. Go back to The King's Speech or Bridges of Madison County.

Thoroughly Bad with Some Laugh-Out-Loud Moments
Some advocates of this movie suggest that it has become so malignedbecause few critics appreciate slapstick humor. As a person who doesenjoy this type of humor, I have to say that is absolutely false. Whilethe film did contain a good deal of crude humor that will make mostviewers laugh, many jokes simply fall flat due to hackneyed writing, amateurish directing, and mediocre acting. And of course, the remaining80 minutes or so of the film that isn't pure slapstick is remarkablyexcruciating. The plot has no substance whatsoever and the sentimentalfamily-bonding moments are neither heartfelt nor cute in that corny,easy-to-relate to way. The film may have only lasted an hour and 40minutes but it felt like nearly three hours. This is easily one of theworst in-theater movies of the year.

Love this movie
This review is from: Grown Ups (DVD) Often times when you put a bunch of good actors/comedians together in a movie, it ends up just being so so. That was not the case in this movie. I laughed throughout the whole movie and so did my wife.

uneven but with more positives than negatives
***1/2When it comes to mainstream Hollywood comedies, we've all too often found that the quality of a cast is in inverse proportion to the quality of the film (i.e., "He's Just Not That Into You"). That being the case, I had expected "Grown Ups" - which features the likes of Adam Sandler, Salma Hayek, Kevin James, Maria Bello, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, David Spade and Steve Buscemi in starring roles - to be a real cinematic turkey. Imagine my shock, then, when the movie turned out to be, for the most part at least (and we'll get to the qualifiers in a moment), a surprisingly genial, laid-back and likable movie that generates a decent number of laughs without breaking too much of a sweat. That is a particularly noteworthy achievement given that Sandler, not exactly known for either subtlety or restraint, is not only the star of the film but co-author of the screenplay as well (along with Fred Wolf). But somehow Sandler and company (the movie was directed by Dennis Dugan) have avoided the material-given temptation of going overly-broad with the humor, choosing instead to effectively downplay things most of the way.Sandler plays Lenny Feder, a hotshot Hollywood agent with a fashion designer wife (Hayek) and two children, who spends a weekend in the country with a group of his basketball-playing chums and their families when the boys' beloved coach from thirty years ago passes away. The guys were all part of a championship team in 1978, and they've come together to honor the man who led them through the winning season, as well as to catch up with what each of them has been doing in the interim."Grown Ups" is far from a perfect comedy. For every sharply humorous insight it offers about the responsibility that comes with maturity, there's a crass joke or gross-out sight-gag to counterbalance it. It's almost as if the writers just couldn't help themselves, as if it were a part of their authorial DNA.That being said, there's much to like about this movie, particularly the performances and the sweetness it conveys when it's NOT being juvenile and crass.

Funnier than Expected
*May contain spoilers* A family-style film meant for adult-viewing.It's difficult to buy into the couples (Adam Sandler with Salma? MariaBello with Kevin James? Really?!?!) but once you let it go at thecoachs' funeral, then it's easy to just go with it. Rob really is theone that deserves all the props. He'll do anything- wear a wig, talkfunny, shack up with an older woman, etc. for a laugh. All the comedicmoments in the film involved him, even if he wasn't there he was beingmade fun of. I'm not a fan of Maya, but Chris Rock surprised me playinga stay-at-home dad and his blow-up in the kitchen at the beginningcracked me up. David Spade...what is America to do with you? I supposelet you be to play David. It was great to see Adam in a funny filmagain. Made me miss Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison, andother earlier Sandler comedies. Make more comedies please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A fun movie for Adam Sandler fans
Grown Ups marks the fifth collaboration between director Dennis Duganand actor Adam Sandler. Not only that, but there is also an all starcast that contains Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and RobSchneider. All 5 of them show how hilarious they are and how great the chemistryis among them. They all have their moments and have good jokes withinthe script. The movie starts with the main 5 actors as younger kids in middleschool playing in a basketball championship, which they ended upwinning on the final play. The story then transitions to 30 years laterwhere their beloved coach (played by Blake Clark, one of Sandler'sfriends and frequent collaborators) has passed on.After the funeral, the main guys decide to go to their old lake houseand spend some time there together. The story then focuses on themrekindling their friendships and getting their kids to spend their timethe same way their parents did at that age.Along with the main 5 actors comes wives. Salma Hayek plays Sandler'swife, Maria Bello plays James's wife, and Maya Rudolph as Rock's wife. They are all very funny in their parts and have some great moments tobe funny.Grown Ups is definitely worth seeing if you are a fan of Adam Sandleror any of these actors. It is full of fun and laughs. There are timeswhen it feels like director Dennis Dugan is trying to have his actorforce lines or force part of the story, but he makes up for it with thelaughs that come within other parts of the story.

A return to form
This is an absolutely hilarious movie. Adam Sandler was starting todisappoint for awhile. Funny people almost looked like a mid-lifecrisis with the graphic and completely unnecessary sex-scenes. But thisis a return to the Adam we all know and love. It is chock full of funnyperformances. The only let down in this one in Chris Rock's rather dryhumor. I think Kevin James is also a really funny guy, who rarely has adirector who captures it. This movie is an exception to that generalrule. I was literally crying I laughed so hard. The addition of SteveBuscemi added a nice touch. Also a Sandler film staple has returned,Jonathan Loughran...who makes me smile every time I see him. Then hemakes me laugh. I love that guy....

Good enough
If you see the cast featured in this movie and think wow, then you'llprobably like it.If you're not a fan of the comedians in this movie chances are you wontlike it. I personally tend to like anything Adam Sandler is in and thisis no exception. Kevin James is his usual goofy self, Chris Rock has done better moviesbut is still decent in this one. David Spade was average as the whinysingleton. Rob Schneider was okay and Madison Riley as the character ofhis daughter OMG! Smoking Hot!!! I definitely want to see more of her!I did feel quite old (i'm only 27) when I found out that she was only20...All the acting was up to scratch and there were several hilariousmoments.A feel good, funny, family film.

Sandlers 3rd worst movie
This isn't in the same league as Little Nicky and Jack and Jill, but it's close. This movie is so bad, it's almost unwatchable. It was very difficult, but I managed to make it through the entire movie. I had to push through, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. There are only so many lame David Spade jokes a man can sit through. You'd think with this cast of characters, which is a fairly impressive group, you'd see some magic or chemistry on the screen. But there was none. It was boring, wasn't funny at all, the plot was terribly lame, and the acting was a nightmare -- with the exception of Sandler and Kevin James, who are actually both good actors and usually give solid performances (even in bad movies - Ahem, Paul Blart!). David Spade, and Chris Rock gave horrifying performances. They should be embarrassed to call themselves actors. They basically mailed in their performances. Rob Schneider did a good job with the stupid role he was given. If you made it through this movie without considering turning it off, BRAVO! I commend you, because that's NOT EASY!
14 May 2012
very disappointing
I have a bad habit of assuming that if big name actors come together to make a movie that it will be a fresh idea that I haven't seen before. My last mistake was "The Expendables". It's just another big paycheck for actors leaving the audience with a movie we've all seen before. The movie starts out very promising. The kids win a game, and they have a good inspiring coach. Then the coach dies, and everything, including his death, is just one big joke. Sandler can't even get through the eulogy without making jokes. The rest of the movie is them having a good time making about a million one liners, completely disregarding the death of their coach. Who cares, right? We have jokes to tell.I also can't help but notice that lately Adam Sandler needs to be the man in all his movies. He's always filthy rich, the overachiever, the alpha male. Did he really need to wear that Harvard shirt? We get it, Adam, you're the man. I really hope he goes back to his "Punch Drunk Love/Reign Over Me" days and starts to play a real person again. If this was a cheesy family movie, that would be one thing. But the jokes are too mature for that. So they really expected grown adults to laugh at this stuff? It makes me wonder about the future of comedies.I've learned a lesson though. If there are five or more big names in a movie, it's probably crap. Exceptions include animated films like Toy Story 3. And if Bruce Willis is in it, it's garbage. No, I'm not talking about Pulp Fiction. Those glory days are apparently over.
