Storyline

Plot Summary:

Matt Damon reteams with his Bourne Supremacy director to create a thriller grounded in contemporary politics the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) travels across war-torn Iraq, pursuing the intelligence hes been given, but every site indicated comes up empty of WMDs. Investigating the source of the intelligence, he finds himself caught between CIA agent Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson, 28 Days Later) and politician Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear, Little Miss Sunshine) over the identity of Magellan, the supposed source. As Miller tracks down an Iraqi general, he ends up further and further afield, facing danger from all sides. Its hard to say which is the greater accomplishment--that Green Zone manages to turn a still-volatile political issue into a propulsive action movie, or that it manages to depict Iraqi people as individuals with a wide range of responses to whats happened to their country. Damons performance is low-key but effective as Miller tries to maintain some semblance of moral clarity in a circumstance that muddies everything. Also featuring Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) as a compromised journalist and Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner) as an Iraqi civilian who gets dragged into far more than he expected.

Amazing indictment of Bush White House US Media

This review is from: Green Zone [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) If true, the assertions made here show that 1) the Wall Street Journal did not validate published stories, and 2) the Bush White House deliberately sent our military unnecessarily into harms way causing the deaths of our military men and women.I hope the U.S. government and/or the Wall Street Journal will soon comment to disspell the story or put to rest the strong suggestions made in this movie.

Cinematography stinks. Too much moving around!!!

I truly loved the first of the Bourne movies, but there was so much in movies #2 and #3 I wished I didn't waste the money. I was looking forward to seeing this movie, but knowing the history of the Bourne movies I waited to see what others wrote. I am so glad that I did. As much as I like Matt Damon's movies I WILL NEVER SEE ANOTHER MOVIE WHERE THEY MOVE THE CAMERA AROUND LIKE THEY DID IN THIS MOVIE!!! For the record I didn't see this movie. I made that decision after seeing Bourne movie #3 and I'm glad I saved the money. I hope they fire the guy who thinks that shaking the camera equates into an action scene. They should shake him as much as he shakes the camera and see if he likes.

It was just ehh

This review is from: Green Zone (DVD) My review for this item is to be taken from only one person's point of view and not as a whole. I really think this movie has a large political value. If it doesn't scream 'I hate Bush'. Nothing does. This movie is nothing more than a cheap way to make pop shots on behalf of the liberal media and liberal agenda. You may personally agree or disagree with the war in Iraq, but to make a movie about how the war was a lie and we are killing thousands of civilians everyday...I mean come on. Personally, I think the movie is pretty anti-american, anti-republican, and anti-Bush.Outside of the political movement...the movie was filled with action. Similar to Borne Identity. Good fight scenes, good action. It is enough to keep your eyes on the TV at least! But the movie isn't like anything you haven't seen before. So with that being said...I give it 3 stars or originality.

Green Zone

Full of action - full of crap

I knew this movie had a liberal slant, but I was in a mood for an action movie. This movie had a lot of great action, but little else. It's only interesting if you believe the liberal tagline of a manufactured war. Although I'm a huge fan of the Bourne Trilogy (which is directed by the same man), I was really dissappointed by this propagandist piece of dung. I think it does a disservice to our troops who are fighting overseas. I would never see it again and I suggest you don't waste your time!

Lets put on those Flak Jackets and see the real Baghgad

Films about the Iraq War have often meant with critical and/orcommercial failure. This is true to films like The Hurt Locker,Redacted, Stop-Loss, In the Valley of Elah, Battle for Haditha andLions for Lambs (technically not an Iraq War film, but influenced bythe conflict) have all met with this problem. However this did notdeter Paul Greengrass, a famously left-wing director who has meant withbox-office success with the Bourne series.Green Zone tells the story of post-war Iraq in 2003. Chief WarrantOfficer Roy Miller (Matt Damon) leads a team of soldiers to securepotential sites where Weapons of Mass Destruction are. But somethingdoesn't add up when the sites are empty: the military hierarchy don'tlike it when Miller starts to question the intelligence. Miller quicklymakes an ally out of Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson), a senior CIA whoagrees with Miller, but also is started to be marginalised by ClarkPoundstone (Greg Kinnear), a intelligence operative from the Pentagon. On a mission Miller gains intelligence of a meeting of former Iraqimilitary officials and leads a raid against them. But after capturingsome of the officials a special forces team lead by Major Briggs (JasonIssacs), under the orders of Poundstone. Miller, with Brown and WallStreet Journal Journalist Lawrie Dayne (Amy Ryan) soon discover a widerconspiracy.Greengrass was obviously passionate about the subject and their was alot anger behind this film. He wanted to make an action thriller thatcould appeal to a mass audience, but he did not want to sacrifice hisbeliefs. But their is a paradox with my views on Greengrass, I like hisfilms but I don't like his direction or even him. There are a lot ofproblems with his direction: he believes in using shaky cam and quickediting, believing it would give the film a documentary feel. Itdoesn't, it leaves the audience feeling distance and this is a problemin many of his films. You don't see anything in the action scenes andthe whole point of seeing an action film is for good action scenes. Some moments of his approach felt amateurish, using quick zooms, andlooked like a bloke using a hand-held camera from an electronic store. If this film wasn't directed by a man with Greengrass' reputation thencritics would have been more willing to judge. Greengrass is anoverrated direct but makes good films, weird. Despite this film beingan action thriller, this film is similar to JFK, a decent film buttells a poor theory. Greengrass has a very dogmatic view on the world. It is easy to be critical of the Iraq War, it was clear that the Bushregime was going to war with Iraq regardless and many of the argumentswere faulted. But the film does take this one step to far when hesuggests that the America government faked the intelligence: what wasmuch more likely is the Bush's regime looked for intelligence thatsupported evidence of WMD, and ignore anything that countered it, likea PHD dissertation from 1993. Greengrass isn't too flattering ofAmerican intelligence and military, where they seem stupid andunwilling to ask questions, when the whole point of intelligence is toask questions and find evidence. They are important issues like theAmerican government lack of post-war planning, with mass looting, andAmerica dismantling all Ba'athist organisations. When it comes topost-war Iraq thought they could rebuild the country, when they shouldhave kept the army and civil service together, like in post-warGermany. It also tackles the issues that there was no good or popularleader to replace Saddam Hussian, their wasn't a Nelson Mandala orAyatollah Khomeini and the Americans just wanted rush the transcensionperiod. This was an area Green Zone did very well. But Green Zone alsohas a very simplistic view of the insurgency, with it only being formerBa'athists, when the real picture was much more complex, with Al-Qaida,Iraq nationalists, Arab nationalists, foreign anti-American fightersand segregation and ethnic groups. Greengrass could have shown more ofthis and looked at the theme that the war forced the Ba'athists andAl-Qaida together when the two used to hate each other (Osama Bin Lidenhated Hussian). The acting in the film is decent. Greengrass and Matt Damon seem towork well together. Brendan Gleeson does very well with an Americanaccent. Jason Isaacs has a dodgy moustache but does well in a minorrole. But no one really stands out, so therefore nothing special. GregKinnear however villain was too simplistic and lacked depth andtherefore lacked menace.A decent enough, especially if you like political thrillers andinterested in the Iraq War, but it is faulted. I would give it a 7.4out of 10, but I vote an 8 because I'm a nice guy.

One of the great war films

Green zone ia amazing the action of the film is evenly split with a great political story. matt damon does an amazing job of acting and in my opinion he does a better job of acting in this film than he did in the great films of the bourne series. non stop suspense, not a predictable plot, just a great film all around. really makes you think if this actually happened during the corrupt bush administration. kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. great buy for the blu ray or dvd.

waste of money and time!

this was the most ridicules action/political movie i have ever seen ,for the action part i saw no action in the movie , from political pointof view the movie is trying to deliver many messages to the world "someof them are true" but most of them are lies , the biggest lie is thatthe USA army entered iraq to kick Saddam out of it and to build ademocratic system in there!? no my friends all what USA care about isthe OIL and Israel , iraq as country it has a great amount of oil andiraq considered a potential threat for Israel and this is the wholestory , the fabrication of truth and all such things that happened inthe movie is to convince people of something that does not exist ...by the way who the hell is freddy?!!

Bush Americas Folly in Iraq

There are not many films that make sense about Iraq. Most just want to relate what the grunts are doing in a hopless mess there. This movie tries to provide some explanations. While I don't buy into all the conspiracry stuff that action films like this often portray, there is little doubt that the Bush Admin. sold America a bill of goods on Iraq. We invaded the country for no reason. We continue to pay the price for our folly today. Intelligence was exaggerated and falsified. WMDs did not exsit, even though Saddam acted as though they did. The media fell in line with our corporate oligarchy and did not question the validity of our actions. This film shows the chaotic mess that our invasion produced there, and conveys the confusion of a mission gone wrong. The cover up for WMDs that just weren't there seems a likely scenario. Normally I am not into pretty boy actors like Matt Damon, but he does a decent job portraying a special unit commander who is perplexed by the situation. The film shows how we likely dropped the ball in not letting the Iraqi army cooperate with our occupation of the country. We niavely thought US Capitalism would re-make Iraq and the Middle East. This film shows that well, and the stone-headed administrators like Paul Bremmer III, our Roman Procounseler who tried to run the country like a US corporation, and failed. Probably one of the best films to come out of the Iraq mess so far, even though I agree that its hard to follow at times and requires several viewings to get all the details down straight. I wish the film's extras had more on what inspired the original story, as opposed to Matt just bonding with the cast! I regret all the sacrefices our forces have made there, as one US soldier's life is not worth all of Iraq! Still, as a young nation we are learning the sorrows of empire as the British, who knew how to do these things a lot better, could have told us.

Bad Blu ray quality

This review is from: Green Zone (DVD) Movie quality is sucks. All Dark scenes look like an old movie with sand storm through screen like it was filmed by cheapest digital camera. And that supposed to be a blu ray.As for movie itself - 2 stars, and Matt does not look same tough as Bourne series. Personally, I feel like I've thrown away money.

This is a must see action thriller!

Once again Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum) has teamedup with Matt Damon, in what is sure to blow your mind! Every aspect ofthis film worked exceedingly well. The jerky hand-held camera reallydoes benefit this film and gives it a complete on edge feel. Thecomposition from shot to shot are fantastic, with each one capturingpure brilliance and makes the film contain a rare piece of movie magic. The wham-bam action sequences supply the audience with enoughexcitement that any other Greengrass film. It flies at you at and asksfor no forgiveness at all. The great technique of plot twisting isn'teasily done, but Greengrass pulls it off brilliantly. The balancebetween part political thriller and upfront action extravaganza arealso perfectly performed, giving the film room to breath when theaction takes a break.

Great Damon, Ok movie.

.....I really like Matt Damon......I really did NOT like him in this movie. Here's why. While the film gives us lots of fire fighting and explosions and helicopters flying about the film cannot escape from a script that is a little too unrealistic.Great acting from Damon and co.The direction was fine.Pacing, score, everything was good.It just wasn't a very interesting movie.I honestly found myself incredible bored. There are better films out there.Hurt Lock, while faulty on it's own was better than this.So was Brother's.It's worth a rental but don't expect anything better than the two films I already mentioned.Nor does it introduce any new concepts into the Iraq war or why we were there.I'll recommend a rental to war movie buffs but for anyone else...pass it.

Most will enjoy...

This review is from: Green Zone [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Found the story line very good, based upon what most of the public did not know was happening in Iraq.Matt Damon is good, similar to seeing him in the role of Jason Bourne, but more realistic.I am not a big fan of action movies, infact the spouse is the one who selected the movie, but I would not object to seeing it again.

The Green Identity

Take Jason Bourne character for which Matt Damon is famous, put him in BDUs, and surround him with the political influences and military consequences of the hunt for WMDs in Iraq, and you've got yourself a hit. Or so you think... The Green Zone is the story of Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon), a man whose team is responsible for finding WMDs in Iraq. Much like Ben Affleck's trophy shelf for acting, Miller's team continues to come up empty. One must question the intelligence that leads to so many duds, but enough about Paycheck and Jersey Girl. Only after he begins the hunt for the "Jack of Clubs" - which, incidentally, was the original target from a mission past that ended up at the Baghdad Jack in the Box - does Miller get frustrated and decide to go rogue, leaning on a one-legged Iraqi local to untie a complicated knot similar to the one I had in my stomach after watching Bounce. From that point it's a perilous thriller/action film, with chase scenes galore, bullets aplenty, a great soundtrack, very crisp editing, professional acting (no one really stood out), and enough political conspiracy theories - tied mostly to scheming Pentagon politico Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear) - that I broke out the tinfoil. (Honestly, would it kill Hollywood to step away from the second helping of Thanksgiving propaganda?)Just go into it with intentions of ignoring the political bias, enjoying most of the action. And the freedom with which Miller's team gallivants about Iraq? Completely unbelievable, like ArmageddonThe filming was on shaky-cam overload; call it the migraine-cam. It's "watching Cloverfield on a laptop while riding a rollercoaster during an earthquake"-shaky. There are chases and gunplay scenes that are almost indiscernible. The overload of one second burst-movements almost made me have a different kind of movement, one that stinks, like Gigli.Overall, Green Zone is some fact more fiction, mostly shock sometimes awe, and far too insistent on pushing a tired political message and creating conspiratorial connections between Damon and Kinnear when it would have benefitted more if the two actors were physically connected like in Stuck On You.

Not Damons best work

While this story needs to be remembered, it's not a story most peopledon't know already. We are all fully aware that nobody found anythingin Iraq to justify the invasion. This story brought nothing new to thepublic's knowledge. If you are pro-Iraqi war, you won't like the movie. If not, you mightsimply so you can ride the anti-conservative bandwagon some more.I was expecting more of a Bourne-esquire action movie, but this turnedout to be a somewhat tepid anti-war flick or maybe a cautionary taleabout swallowing whole what your government wants to feed you.I found Damon believable in his part, but maybe there wasn't enough ofa storyline for him to sink his teeth into.

Nauseated from shaking and DUMB nothing story!!!

I was totally disappointed. I came out with a horrible headache andnauseated from the shaky camera and dark, fuzzy scenes. Do NOT wasteyour $$$ - wait for Netflix if you must. I hope from now on I can findout about the camera work before wasting MY money! Why on EARTH didMatt Damon agree to DO this movie? His acting wasn't up to par - heseemed rather blank and emotionless. It was a NOTHING story with 1/2the movie some pointless chase scene. Plus it was so simplistic, Icould readily guess what happens at the end of the chase scene. Youcould have filmed this - hopefully with a STATIONARY camera where youcould SEE what was going on easily, as a 20 minute fake documentary. Itwas NOT an action movie, as you might think. It was some politicalstatement based on a conspiracy theory that was a completelyunbelievable fabrication.

Delivers Nonstop Excitement Suspense

Director Paul Greengrass made a name for himself with the Jason Bourne series, and doesn't fail to deliver with this thrill ride. While Green Zone is a mostly fictional account of the hunt for WMDs in Iraq, the movie itself is an action-packed conspiracy flick that will appeal to fans of any political leaning.Matt Damon does a great job as Chief Warrant Officer Miller, a unit commander responsible for searching alleged WMD sites. Whereas Jason Bourne is a one-man army, Miller is both brave and vulnerable, and offers a real human element to the film.Much of the film's suspense comes not only from tense action scenes, but the static between Pentagon officer Clark Poundstone and CIA Agent Martin Brown. Portrayed expertly by veteran actors Greg Kinnear and Brenan Gleeson, the duo play a dangerous game with different goals, and Miller caught in the middle. While a few people dislike the "shaky cam" style of shooting used by Greengrass for action sequences, I didn't find it the least bit distracting. Green Zone won't win any Oscars, but it will absolutely keep you on the edge of your seat.

Shaky Camera

I shall pass on this one. I saw a short clip on Bill O'Rielly and the camera was bouncing all over the place. This may be a lovely new technique for some but it makes me sick!

Insider info

This review is from: Green Zone (DVD) Someone connected with this project--author? director?--knows a lot of inside information. As someone with intimate knowledge of the Iraq war, I picked out a number of gems that the general public would not know. Highly recommend it.
