true to the comic
The critics forgot one thing when they reviewed this movie and that was that its a comic book movie. If your a fan of the comic u know that reynolds was a perfect fit to play jordan. The f/x were astonishing to create such an environment was incredible. I recommend seeing this movie with an open mind and staying till the end of the credits where there is a special treat for true lantern fans.

WARNING! DIGITAL COPY!
This review is from: Green Lantern (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Be warned, this is not the standard digital copy I've purchased in the past. First, there's no disk, you have to go to flixster.com, and REGISTER to download. That's IF the URL they put on the instructions would work. I COULDN'T ACCESS THE DIGITAL COPY!

Good movie...but digital copy is a waste of good money
I enjoyed the movie...it wasn't the best, but it was enjoyable. However, this review is really about the scam that is "UltraViolet" digital copy. While the ability to stream a movie to multiple devices is great, it does NOT allow you to watch the movie when you do not have internet access - like on a plane. The benefit of the iTunes digital copy is that you can transfer the file to a portable device and watch it anywhere - at any time. Not so with the UltraViolet version. In order to watch that version, you must have internet access because it is merely streaming it to your portable device.I typically pay extra money for a "combo pack" (blu ray/dvd/digital copy) because it allows me to watch the movie anywhere - even if that place does NOT have a blu ray player - such as in a car. While this version contains a DVD which is playable in my car, the digital copy is not as beneficial as the typical iTunes version.Had I known this, I would have purchased a different version of the movie...or maybe not at all.Very disappointing.

Green Lantern is worthy!
This review is from: Green Lantern (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) (DVD) I just finished watching GREEN LANTERN in the theatre. I'm not gonna review the film here as it has drawn enough share of critics, both positive & negative already. All I'm gonna say is that it succeeds in being wildly entertaining with regards to both action & sci-fi theatrics. The human-level story-telling could use a bit of a brush-up is all I could think of as I left the cinema. I'm looking 4ward 2 the DVD release. Also am optimistic of a sequel pitting Hal against Sinestro tho I hope they take their time with that narrative not RUSH head-first into it.If there is anything of this movie 2 B negative & have hatred of here (as prior reviewers seemed 2 indicate), it should B directed at WarnerBros for putting out a trailer which had ALREADY given out WAY TOO MUCH of the story BEFORE it was even released. Perhaps(???)it mite have done & grossed better had they used a minimal 1min trailer (aka 1978's SUPERMAN, both teaser & theatrical)that didn't give away the plot thus saving enough suspense 4 the audience. Let's hope they (studio dumbasses reading this!) do a BETTER/smarter job with the sequel in that dept, 4 starters!

Big, fun popcorn flick! Turn your brain off at the door.
There's a lot of negative word of mouth out there about this film and, honestly, a lot of it is built on the over expectation of a quick to despair comic book fanboy crowd. Of which I am one, proudly. The difference is I never expect an adaptation to sell it's soul to the source material. I judge it based on what's there, in front of me at the time I'm taking it in. I did go into this with rather low expectations just from all of the online downgrading and came out of it with a smile on my face and the feeling of having a good time. This is a fun movie. Period. Don't look too deep, just sit back, relax, grab a drink and a snack and watch an hour and three quarters of good old escapist cinema. I know that, as a society, we're not allowed to enjoy anything unless it's "realistic" and "edgy" but try. There are some spots that drag a bit, usually in the Earthbound moments, but for the most part the pace sings along and the action is comic booky and appealing. There are aliens, space ships, intergalactic peacekeepers and galaxy threatening menaces that would make George Lucas sour with envy. This is not Academy Award material and I wouldn't want it to be. I want it to be just what it is, fun.

Great movie!
The effects were really good and I loved the story.Personally I think this is one of the better comic book films. It's too bad that the problems with the digital copy have caused so many bad reviews as the film itself was really good.

Just wrong time wrong place
This movie is a victim of bad timing rather than bad filmaking, tostart off the film as a whole is a good film yes it's no masterpiecebut as comic book movie it's good. The only issue is that we are nowspoiled by so many great comic book movie as a genre it's so strong nowand most of the characters are so more well known and easy to identifywith. The movie as a whole is solid the casting is good and the storyis acceptable but the fact the green lantern is not known by a majorityof people leads to a lot of building of the initial story andbeginnings of the green lantern, this makes the movie a bit slow pacedand tedious at points. The main problem with this film is the completeoveruse of cgi and the cgi is not bad in the film but it leaves thefilm lacking charm almost and this is a issue with so many films today. If your looking for something to watch and enjoy this is a good choicebut don't expect fireworks but hopefully they get at a chance at asequel because they built the character and story they could really dosomething with the green lantern if given the chance.

I Still Cant Understand the Negative Reviews
I've been a GL fan since buying issue #1 in 1960. I've been waiting for a GL film for years since it obviously could have never been done without the CGI technology currently available. The last film I saw that I was as excited about was the Star Trek revamp 2 years ago. I loved the film and saw it twice in the theaters. I cannot understand why it has done so poorly in the theaters.I knew the film was in trouble when I read the first ridiculous reviews. The first review I read called him a "Second tier" super hero. Second Tier?? The character was originally created in 1940 and the silver-age GL, the one in this film, has been published continuously since 1960 (and before that in his "Showcase" tryout.) The second review I read was one of those "Enough super heroes already" types. It was obvious how the reviewers were going. After positive reviews to "Thor" and "X Men First Class," they had to find one super hero movie to destroy and show their power as movie reviewers. Unfortunately, Green Lantern was their victim. I've seen them do this numerous times before. What I don't understand however is the criticism from comic book fans. I can't believe that they would be affected by the opinions of movie critics. For some reason, they agreed with the critics. I don't. I thought it was an excellent film with a good cast headed by a likeable Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and a quite hot Blake Lively as Carol Ferris. The origin story and the special effects were good, the sets incredible. The only film I enjoyed more this summer was "Captain America."Anyway, I'm looking forward to purchasing the film on blu-ray. I hope that the disappointing grosses of this film do not cause Warner Brothers to cancel GL #2. That would truly be upsetting but the comic book fans would have no one to blame but themselves.

Undecided
The story was great and the movie is worth seeing, but wait until itcomes out in DVD. There were some weeknesses such as the specialeffects like the costume fakeness. But what bothered me the most wasthe editing, I am not talking about it cutting in the middle of thescene it was more along the lines of too much. They could have cut outa half an hour and it would have made the movie better there were a lotof parts that I felt could have been skipped over and parts thatdragged on. But the story and actors were just flawless. Ryan wasperfect! Totally worth seeing, but like I said wait until it comes outon DVD. Its worth renting for sure!

Digital Copy Not Compatible with iTunes
This review is from: Green Lantern (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) This release of Green Lantern claims you get a digital copy of the movie, but instead you are asked to create an account to Flixster which then streams the movie to your device. You don't get an actual copy of the movie that can be stored on your iPhone/iPod/iPad. Streaming doesn't work at 35,000 feet, which is where I typically have the time to watch a movie. There is nothing about this digital copy that is iTunes compatible, so it's unlikely you can stream it to your Apple TV. Overall a big disappointment. I'll have to reassess paying additional money for movies from Warner Brothers that claim a digital copy.

I enjoyed but it wasnt great
This review is from: Green Lantern (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I am glad I waited until this came out on Blue-ray. Ryan Reynolds did a good job but the story was "choppy". I am not sure if it was a bad editing job or the screenwriter was not a very good story teller. This movie had so much potential but up against the other super hero stories/movies it was my least favorite.

In our darkest hour, there will be light
A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him withotherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalacticsquadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.Another wanna-be. I laugh at the people who say that the critics areway too hard, the film is too clichéd and way too cheesy. In about themiddle, the film turned into one of those background movies where Ifailed to pay attention and continued to do other things. Don't get mewrong here, the film has potential and at some scenes maybe possibly itcould've been better; but overall, it totally fails. I'm not a comicbook reader, nor do I find any interest in them but the film (again)seemed to have potential to become an average superhero flick but itjust becomes a fail. I wasn't expecting much I do say. Ryan Reynolds asa superhero? That just ruins it there. But again, if you overlook theentire movie, you can see that it could've been different. All in all,it depends on your taste. If you enjoy crappy, mindless superheroflicks; this is it. If you enjoy story, pacing, and actually good; thisit not your thing. The pros: the special effects were nice and thesubliminal potential. The cons: well just about everything else. 2/10.

If Warner Bros intentions with Green Lantern is to replace the Harry Potter franchise, they have hit a home run with Green Lantern!
I was fortunate to know some friends that own a movie theater here inTexas that allowed me to come and preview the Green Lantern reel withthem last night at their movie theater. I will say up front I am aGreen Lantern fan and a fan of comic book movies. With that said I ammore than willing to point out flaws in a movie and even trash a movieI hoped would be good and it was not. What makes this movie great? 1.)The CGI effects for this movie are way better than I even imagined theywould be. I was one of those that were scared about the CGI because thefirst teaser trailer was absolute crap. After seeing the movie I wasblown away by the CGI, and if anyone says that it is crap they are justbeing a troll bottom line.2.) The overall story is fantastic. Changes have been made from thecomic's lore such as what happens to Sinestro, but they were easilyacceptable and I did not have any problems with the changes.3.) The movie is action packed from beginning to end. I tend to judgethe quality of the movie by whether I checked my watch during themovie. I did not do that once. It is well paced and I did not feel itdragged at all. The first 10-12 minutes absolutely hook you into themovie and it does not slow down from there. 4.) When the audience is finally taken to OA for the first time it isjust awesome! The creators of this movie did an amazing job of openingthe audience up to an all new world and universe. This is where themovie stands out in my opinion. You really do get pulled into the wholeidea of the Green Lantern Corps and OA, and I wish more of the moviecould have been on OA. 5.) Ryan Reynolds is a fantastic Green Lantern. I had my reservationsat first but this is a great example of the Michael Keaton affect. Iremember when Batman 1989 was coming out people were up in arms whenthey found out Mr. Mom/Beetlejuice was Batman, but once they saw themovie he was instantly accepted. I think it will be the same thing herewith Ryan Reynolds. By the end of the movie I could not imagine anyoneelse as Hal Jordan. The transformation of cocky test pilot to hero isgreat. I give Ryan Reynolds and Martin Campbell real props for Hal'scharacterization. 6.) HOLY COW IS MARK STRONG AWESOME AS SINESTRO. As great as I feltRyan Reynolds was as Hal Jordan, I think we have another JackNicholson/Joker thing here. In Batman 1989 Jack's Joker in many waysovershadowed Keaton's Batman, and Strong's Sinestro almost does that.He was the absolute best choice for Sinestro, and he did a great job asthat character. That is all I have to say about that topic because hewas that good. 7.) The 3D is fantastic. It is clear that it was shot in3D because it was amazing the whole time. I have seen a lot of 3Dmovies since Avatar, and this is one of the best ones that I have seen.I highly recommend seeing Green Lantern in 3D especially if you onlyplan on seeing it one time in the theaters. I believe the 3D reallyadded to the entire experience. 8.) The costume is a lot better in themovie than I imagined it would be. To see the power of the ringmanifest itself into the costume was brilliant. The trailers did NOT doa good job capturing that I felt, and I loved the costume from theknees up. The problems with Green Lantern:1.) Blake Lively. I knew when I heard she was being cast as CarolFerris the movie was in trouble in that department. She is absolutelybeautiful there is no question about that, but her performance iscomparable to Denise Richards in James Bond's The World's Not Enough. Iam not going to say it was God-awful but let's just say she wasdefinitely cast in that role as eye candy, and to maybe bring in herGossip girls audience. I don't know. 2.) The dialog is not bad by any means (especially compared to othercomic book movies), but it is not the strong point. Does it hold themovie back...no I do not think so, but as I said at the beginning of myreview I wanted to be honest here. 3.) The costume is great and Ienjoyed seeing the ring's power manifest itself through the costume, but the mask and the eyes bothered me. I could not stand his feet.Looked like skeleton feet and that just looked bad. Not a big deal Ithink but it will distract you when you see it. I felt the mask shouldhave just whited out his eyes completely. The little black beedy eyewas weird. In conclusion, Green Lantern is the best comic book movie of 2011, andone of the best movies of the year IMHO. It introduces us to an amazinguniverse, has great supporting characters (minus Blake Lively), andleaves you wanting more with promises of that (ending is great and wideopen for some more). I feel it was definitely better than Thor, and forwhat it offers as an overall package better than X-Men: First Class. It has huge appeal to all audiences, and to be honest I think thiscould be one of the softer PG-13 movies I have ever seen. I would notbe afraid to take older kids to see this movie at all. I think kidswill love this movie, the ladies will love this movie, and the comicbook nerds will absolutely love this movie.

Ryan Reynolds provides the right mix of arrogance and compassion for his role in Green Lantern
Just watched this DC Comics-based superhero movie featuring GreenLantern with my movie theatre-working friend which we both enjoyed. Asthe title character's alter ego Hal Jordan, Ryan Reynolds is the rightmix of arrogance and compassion with a wonderful sense of humor. As thebeautiful brunette Carol Ferris who is the heiress of the Ferrisaircraft not to mention one of its best pilots, Blake Lively bringssuch a lovely presence and a great can-do attitude that proves morethan a perfect match with Reynolds when the latter expresses some doubtabout his new abilities. Then there's Peter Sarsgaard as the eccentricDr. Hector who has his own transformation from someone likable tosomeone really creepy when he gets possessed. Other interestingcharacters were Sinestro (Mark Strong) who becomes GL's mentor, andKilowog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan in his second stint in a comicbook-inspired movie after playing The Kingpin in Daredevil) who trainsGL's battle skills. In summary, Green Lantern was just the right mix ofthe fun and serious action that probably could have used a slightlylonger running time but it was still enjoyable enough as it stood, thanks to the script and Martin Campbell's direction. So on that note,it's well worth a look. P.S. If I didn't read about it already, Iwouldn't have known this movie was partly shot in New Orleans which isjust a two-hour drive from where I currently live. Also, when areporter on a TV screen was identified as Melanie Hebert, she lookedliked the same woman I once viewed several years back in the lastdecade on WVLA-TV 33. I guess New Orleans is her beat now...

Good film, but it has its flaws.
The Green Lantern is by no means a masterpiece. It is simply forentertain. I've read some of the bad reviews, and I think to myself.'Paid movie critics are stupid.' That's plain and simple. Critics go toa movie not to enjoy, but to bash, because it's there job. The badreviews simply do not match with this movie. The critics obviously sawthe Green Lantern thinking it'll be like The Dark Knight. It is nowherenear close to being as good as The Dark Knight. This film is to beenjoyed, not to be watched thinking it'll be like Batman. This movie has everything a movie for pure entertainment should have.It has incredible CGI and an amazing story line. I will admit theacting is mediocre at best. That does not effect the movie very much.Hal Jordan is a test pilot who is given a ring. With this ring hebecomes part of the Green Lantern Corps. His mission, to keep peace inthe universe. The CGI in this movie is very believable. With a 200 million dollarbudget I'd be surprised if is wasn't. The best of the CG came from theplanet where the corps are. Believe it or not, Ryan Reynolds entiresuit is CG. It is truly believably real. It looks like any other suit, just with a glow to it. 3D definitely enhances the way his suit looks.3D makes his suit even more realistic. I suggest you see it in 3D. Ifyou don't your missing something. The acting had only one strong actor who was truly believable. MarkStrong is by far the best actor in the entire film. Ryan Reynoldsacting is better that mediocre but not by much. Supporting actorsweren't really that great either. Like I said the only great acting inthe whole movie was by Mark Strong.I honestly had only three major problems with this film. One was Tom.Tom in the story is Hal's best friend. I felt like he just held themovie back. Thankfully he didn't have much screen time. The actor whoplayed him (Taika Waititi) was pretty terrible. The second problem Ihad was Peter Sarsgaard, he played Hector. The acting by him in thebeginning of the film is very good. Towards the end though he sounds, well lets just say he sounds like he hangs out with girls and has aboyfriend. The third problem I have is how many times it failed beingfunny. Honestly they must've gotten Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer(Disaster Movie) to write the jokes. The movie has only two laughmoments. The rest of the laughs were just failed by whoever wrote them. All and all this is a good film for just sitting back and relaxing to.Not the best super hero movie ever, but not the worst. I do hope theymake a sequel, but I doubt it since it's only made 80 million dollarson a 200 million dollar budget so far. I won't give up hope though.*note* stay after credits.

The Green Lantern goes by at a fast pace.
Here we go again, they release a fun super hero flick and everybodycomplains about wanting a darker film, critics bash it relentlessly andone is left feeling almost bad if they enjoyed it. I am such a person,I found this movie to be a fun summer film featuring a comic bookhero..comics the form of literature aimed at kids, but for some reasonpeople want it to be dark and disturbing to the highest degree. I beginto feel we have to many darker image people out there, this isevidenced by the fact that I read a review here for Kung Fu Panda 2 andthe reviewer said he liked it better than the first because it wasdarker, because hey a movie about a freaking giant panda that performsmartial arts should be dark! eyes rolling. The critics I am guessinghate it because Warner Bros forgot to mail them their check. Yeah Isaid it, how else to you explain a film series like Twilight gettingbetter and better reviews as it progresses and its movies grossing moremoney hence more money to bribe cause at the film's core is a gal thathas all the charisma of paper, a dude whose other films get releaseddirectly to DVD and a dude who is simply a slab of beef. This film doesdeserve some criticism, I was not fully impressed with it myself andfeel it could have been better, but it is not the end all worst comicmovie of all time. Neither is "Batman and Robin", like a lot of peoplesay, I give the crown to that Captain America movie of 1990. A filmfeaturing a man with a gal going one place to the next for 80 percentof the movie. Seriously, one review seemed to put down the film simplybased on the Green Lantern's powers at one point criticizing the sizeof the fist he uses to take out the people attacking him. The film hasa creature being awoken and escaping its prison, the creature is calledParallex. This creature devours the inhabitants of planets feasting ontheir fear. It goes after the green lantern who imprisoned him, a beingnamed Abin Sur. This battle is brief, but so has the feel of a comicbook to me. He is wounded and must pass on his ring, he makes it toEarth and a test pilot named Hal Jordan has the ring passed to him. Hemust learn how to use the powers of the ring in time to fend off thethreat of Parallex and must battle a man who ends up infected by thisevil creature when examining Abin Sur's body. The effects are rathergood, I liked the planet of the Green Lantern's. The final battle wasalso enjoyable. I like Ryan Reynolds and I thought he did a good job asHal Jordan, however, if you do not like Ryan you will most likely notenjoy this film. Of course, not liking the movie for this reason ismuch better than the it isn't dark enough reason. Seriously, not allsuper heroes are Batman, as he should be portrayed in a more dark andserious tone, Green Lantern is not one in my opinion and this is onlymy opinion. I chuckled during the scene when he is the Lantern checkingup on his childhood friend and love. Now on to the negatives, of whichthis film has a few. In fact, I was close to rating this one a six, butthought it went by to fast and entertained me to much for a six, but acouple of the flaws are great. One is something I absolutely agree withthe one critic who mainly bashed the Lantern's powers and that is thecharacter of Hector Hammond the human villain of the piece. Not sayingPeter Sarsgaard did a bad job, in fact he did a good job portraying anobviously lonely man whom has few friends, his dad wishes he was Haland is in love with a girl he can never have. The problem is how do youpull against a man like this? I have never felt so bad for a villain inmy life, add to that they make him grow more and more deformed until heis finally in a wheel chair for the final battle. The man also getsupset because his father pulled strings for him, I am guessing we asAmericans are supposed to dislike him for this reason cause in ourcountry it is not what you know, but who, but this only made mesympathize with him more. Every scene he is in I feel pity. I mean Ican understand where a villain like Magneto is coming from, but I donot feel sorry for him because his powers are great and he commandsgreat respect even from his enemies, the guy here at one point cries inpain in his first battle with the Lantern and I felt terrible for him.You are supposed to go "Yes!" when the hero hits the bad guy, not "poorguy". Another problem is the fact that the Lantern's powers do not workon yellow is never really looked at. This is a major thing in thecomics and all the cartoons I have ever seen, here it is not reallytouched on all that much except that yellow is the color of fear andsuch. The Lantern's training session seemed to come out of nowhere andhis first appearance should have been a bit more spectacular as well. However, despite these gripes overall I enjoyed the movie more thanmost people apparently and I am saddened by the fact that this film isnot going to do enough to warrant a sequel in all likelihood meaning Iwill never get to see Hal Jordan fight the man everyone associates asbeing his greatest adversary.

Poor little rich-boy alpha male with dead daddy issues. Boo-fing-hoo!
By now I've noticed an alarming trend with "superhero" movies althoughthis one is the first of the three I've seen next to "Batman Begins"and "Iron Man" to have a dubious critical and audience reaction. It isthe theme of spoiled rich brats who have grown up into spoiled richbrat adults whose idiotic, condescending and irresponsible behaviourand actions are presented through the narrative as justifiable becauseof deep-seeded psychological trauma rooted in the loss of theirfathers. Boo-f***ing-hoo. If the filmmakers are expecting me to feelsympathetic or even remotely supportive towards these shallow andself-indulgent male protagonists who wallow wilfully and joyfully intheir own unconquerable destructive ignorance or to even entertain thepossibility that they are this way because deep down they really arenice, good people trying to deal with the fact that they miss theirdaddies oh so much and just want a hug you gotta be f***ing kidding me!Is this the best the storytellers behind films that are based ondecades of writing and hundreds of issues of comic books can do? Youguys are f***ing pathetic! So here we have the hero to be, Hal Jordonplayed by Ryan Reynolds, good looking, cut like a model, perfectlyhealthy, sleeping with any woman he wants, driving a cool car at theexpense of other's safety, is the best pilot in an awesome job hedoesn't care about flying and testing fighter jets for what we assumeis good pay and the safety of other pilots, and blowing them up when hewants to despite their expense, again to others, never to himself, andall because he saw his daddy die two decades ago and hasn't been ableto deal with THAT even though he's been able to acquire and achieveeverything else. I repeat, ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME? Movies this badmake the movies of Ed Wood look more credible than night and day. Do Isound like I'm jealous? Of course I'm jealous! Who the hell wouldn'tbe? If I could get away with making a movie this bad about somebodythis stupid for millions of dollars I probably wouldn't have anyrespect for the audience either because I wouldn't know what the wordmeans. The difference between the filmmakers and I, though, is that Iwould not MAKE this movie because what little taste and talent I havedoesn't come out of my ass which is more than I can say for the prosbehind this brainchild. And as a member of the audience I don't see anyother explanation or excuse for a company of filmmakers to be dumbenough to assume I would want to shell out $13.00 for the 3-D versionof this piece of sh** to watch some spoiled brat exploiting his daddyissues, which haven't affected his health, cognition, or material gainin any way, in order to treat others with the disrespect that is indirect opposition to the unquestionable reverence he treats himself andthe memories of his daddy. Hell no! Good thing for me I walked out ofthis movie and had my money refunded to me before i realized too latethat the running joke in the movie, among the many that fall flat intrying to make light of a repulsive character, is that I paid for it.Still, I remain traumatized by the fact it was even made.

Genre
As comic-genre film, this is surprisingly solid. It is well-acted andhas good character development. I found this film to be moreentertaining and less predictable than this years crop from Marvel, although I did enjoy the blonde God of Thunder. Ye other critics neednot to forget this is still based on a comic lest ye be too critical. It will be interesting to see if the proposed sequel will make it toproduction. If so, they better find someone who can create a strongerscript, like Paul Haggis. The latest caped crusader films took comic-based films to the next level, where Chris Columbus delivered 9 to10star films.
