This show IS different. Finally -)................
Its about a 40yr old woman. She is not very smart, but she thinks sheis, she wants to do great things, but she can't because she can'treally understand why things are repeatedly going wrong around her(though we the audience can see). And most of the time its because ofher dumb actions, and she just can't see it right then. She is having a mid life crisis and she is trying her very best tolive.I have now seen till s1e6. Each episode focuses on a different storyand there is a sort of moral at the end of it. The beauty of it is thatits not condescending or trying to push it down our throat. Its alwaystrying to give us both sides of the picture. If you are giving it a try, please try it for a few episodes. I too wasnot convinced in the beginning few episodes, but now I have grown intoit. Its just 21mins long but there is a continuous tension in the story. There is nothing dangerous/thriller like happening, yet it is! Thewriting and direction should be applauded. For now I give it a 8/10.Though I think it deserves more, as it makes me think and look atmyself, and how many shows have that ability??Give it a spin and tell us you what you think.Cheers :-).............

A series that looks good at anger, doubt, uncertainty, and the fight for love and spiritual meaning.
Just been watching this new HBO series "Enlightened" and I must sayit's an interesting and raw work from Mike White he shows how life canbe depressing and dark with rage and anger. It's clear that most peoplecan relate to this thru their jobs and paying bills, and dealing withrelationships as all of this brings stress and uncertainty to most. Allof this is showcased thru the life of one middle aged lady Amy(thewonderful Laura Dern(who shares a birthday the same day as me!)she's awoman who's had a nervous and spiritual breakdown. And Amy is faced with a destructive type of life it all began when shesplit from her ex husband(Luke Wilson)who's battled his demon withdrugs. Also to complicate matters life on the job sucks as after 15years she's been demoted to a lower level computer programming job inthe basement of the company! As she watched how others have slimmed, lied, and slept their way up the ladder. As Amy's mind feels the rageand anger toward her co workers anytime she has thoughts of them. Not all is lost still Amy is a productive citizen who still fights forjoy and peace by trying to do the right thing by looking out for othersand her character always tries to do things for humanity. She gets muchadvice and support from her mother(Diane Ladd who's Laura's real lifemother) who she lives with. Overall this is a series that's a littledark with drama and blended well with anger and sadness as it proveslife is always uncertain with a challenge ahead. Still the leadcharacter Amy fights for what's right and to be at peace with life andpeople in a spiritual manner. Overall good interesting new series.

Accept what you cannot change and change what you can
Enlightened is about a woman who was unable to cope with a series ofaccumulated stresses in her life and decided to seek treatment. Shereturns to her life with a new awareness and feels compelled to shareand engage people in that awareness to effect positive change aroundher, but she finds herself running up against resistance due to fear ofchange. The people around her are all coping with stress in their livesin various other ways. It's about confronting the loneliness andisolation that you can feel when your perspective differs from thosearound you, and how that loneliness is at odds with your desire toconnect, help, and heal those around you. At the end of the day it'sabout the serenity prayer, about Amy learning the wisdom to know thedifference between what she can change, and what she can't. A lot ofmistakes are made in the process, but her heart is in the right place, and any introspective viewer will be able to relate to the struggle. Ihighly recommend it.

Will get on your last nerve
This woman is just like a person i use to know. She will get under yourskin and make you instantly annoyed. She always talks about herself andher issues- never listening to the person she is talking to.She talksabout helping others not realizing that she needs help herself. You know the acting is good in this show by how irritate you get whenyou watch her on TV.The funny thing is that there are clueless people just like that in thereal world. It is defiantly an original show i will give it that. Youreally can't predict it. I think Laura Dern has done it all after thispart.

Takes a while to start caring about the main character
I've updated this review following episode 3, which was finally moreengaging and feels like it's going somewhere interesting.Enlightened reminds me of Curb Your Enthusiasm in the way it makes mecringe. The difference is that CYE quickly gets to the point, jabbingit in repeatedly so that it's inescapable, if painful. Enlightened issimply not making its point in any way that can hook a viewer in 20minutes (make that 40, now that I've been completely irritated by theending of the 2nd episode). I watched the second episode hoping itwould find its focus but, despite a growing cast of "carnival freaks"(a very funny line), I still didn't feel the satisfaction ofunderstanding what their angle is. There was some good stuff in episode2, but maybe the real problem is the horrible, pointless "bliss"endings tacked onto both episodes. What a waste of dramatic space. Iwas looking for some meaning to draw it together, and got nuthin.Laura Dern's character is full-on nuts, and not in a good way. Thecharacter is completely repellent and impossible to relate to (eventhough I am also a somewhat off-the-wall "seeker" who well understandsthat the road is filled with lots of ugly potholes). There seems to benothing trustworthy or honest about her, so how can we care? As anexample of a repellent character who never fails to fascinate even intohis 8th season, Greg House has his audience in the palm of his hand --because we see the line of authenticity. Why should we watch thismarginal character Amy? By the end of the 2nd episode I should haveknown the answer to that question. But she's already been so insane Idon't know how the writers could possibly bring her back to abelievable place where she's worth watching, unless they put her onmedication. (In episode 3, she's toned down, for the most part.)The premise is intelligent: being "enlightened" is a worthy goal but nowalk in the park. I really want to like this show, so I'm hanging inand feel rewarded by the latest episode. Some viewers may be put off bythe clash of comedy with the deeply serious nature of Amy's quest, butin real life this stuff IS funny (while you make plans, God laughs) andthe first two episodes really didn't seem to know how to pitch this, just throwing everything at the wall. Finally in episode 3, LauraDern's character Amy becomes someone I can relate to, even if she'sstill just hanging on by her fingernails. I love Luke Wilson's scenesas her ex-husband, but he wasn't in the third episode, which isprobably good for Amy's health. His character provides an excellenthistorical perspective on Amy, and scenes with her mother show honestlyhow parents can both be supportive and drive you crazy. Bottom line: This is an original drama with a big cast of possiblyfascinating characters. It's worth watching to see how these charactersdevelop. However, it's a weird show and may not find an audience intime to avoid the axe.

Quirky, Raw, Human
I'm hoping I'm not the only one out here who loves HBO's Enlightened. While still a bit uneven script to script, Laura Dern and Mike White'sshow is quirky, funny, irritating, raw, and human - bringing to mindMichael Tolkin's 1994 film, The New Age, minus the corrosive cynicism.Dern portrays 'seeker' Amy Jellicoe straight up, with all her foibles:unvarnished, selfish, pretentious and trying hard to change. I'm prettysure most of us get Amy's brand of supercilious self-righteousness, thekind we get when we want so much to change others, while avoiding thechange that begins with ourselves. Co-creator Mike White isheartbreakingly sympathetic, hilarious and a great foil for Dern.Unfortunately Enlightened brings to mind a few other wonderful showswhere our imaginary friends disappeared within a season or so: My SoCalled Life, Beggars and Choosers, Canada's Intelligence, among them.Sometimes the grit is just a little too real, the subject a little toooff-beat for mass consumption, with broadcasters not giving a showenough time to find its feet, and audiences robbed of the chance tobond with character. With apologies to Jimi Hendrix, a toast to Enlightened, 'Let your freakflag fly.'

A frustrating experience that does have its rewards...somewhere
I wanted to see this series solely for Laura Dern. The first episodeseemed okay. A woman has a meltdown at work after finding out that theboss she was having an affair with was transferring her out of herdepartment. So she goes away to a retreat, fixes herself, and comesback to find that her old job has been filled, and she's got a newjob...in the basement of the company working with computers.I thought that the story would develop as I got deeper into the seriesbut that's where I was wrong. The series deals with Amy and her issuesand we're left wondering if her Hawaiian retreat actually helped her ornot. Each episode, with the exception of the second last one, deal'swith one of Amy's hangups and I was starting to get frustrated with it.Laura Dern does a good job as a wacky person who just can't see pastherself. She's her own worst enemy, choosing to ignore what's right infront of her face, deal with her predicament and move on and dosomething about it. I was getting fed up of seeing her continually goback to her old floor and try to confide in Krista, one of twocharacters (besides Janice) whom I found two faced and really despised.Thankfully, the last episode sort of made up for most of the series andI'm interested in seeing where Amy goes with her new found power. Aslong as the series gets another shot. Aside from Laura Dern, the wholecast that makes up the Cogentiva floor is well cast and funny, witheach person contributing to the weirdness that makes up the DNA of abasement floor worker. Timm Sharp as the politically incorrect, nerdish, loutish, priggish head is very funny. Mike White also deservesa mention because he says a lot more with his quiet demeanour and smilethan with any dialogue (but I had to laugh at his hack in password!).All in all, I'd recommend it but bear in mind that Amy is highlyannoying and frustrating most of the times but there are lucid momentswhen she gets the picture and you think there is hope for her afterall.

Strangely addicting
I read somewhere that this show was one of the best new shows of theyear, so I started watching it on demand. I find it to be a veryinteresting mix of humor, drama, and intrigue. Laura Dern is great asan almost completely unpredictable person. It's almost scary to saythat her character is like more than a few people I've met in my life. This show covers work, home, friends, and life matters in a prettyrealistic way. As in life, sometimes it's the verbal and sometimes it'sthe nonverbal communication that conveys the best message. The actorsare doing a great job with the material, and I'm now on episode 7 andthe show feels like it's getting even more interesting. I have to say,I'm pretty addicted to wanting to get to know these people more...andseeing where it all goes.

Amazing Show
This is one of the best shows I have ever seen on Television. MikeWhite's writing is hilarious, heartfelt, depressing and the most trulyenlightening pieces of art ever shown on television. This show is amasterpiece. Laura Derns "Amy" is a truly multifaceted creation. It'seasy to to slap the term "crazy" on her and I don't believe she iscrazy at all. She is a manifestation of the way many people feel intoday's world. Helpless, confused, yearning for love and the meaning ofit all. Amy especially wants to be good and do good in the world. Tocontribute in a positive way to give her own life meaning. It is veryhard to engage real change in the world today especially when moneyrules all even at a time where climate change and economic breakdownshows that change is badly needed most companies will continue to chasethe almighty dollar while facing certain doom in not too many years tocome. I also think many people will think of Amy as crazy because shedares to yearn for change and is not above it to actually attempt to dosomething about it (whether its wrong headed or not is not the questionhere) One of the most amazing things about the show is that we hearAmys thoughts which many times may seem delusional but at the same timemake total sense. She truly wants good things for everybody and theworld. She single-mindedly wants to achieve change in herself andeverything and everyone around her. Its a heartbreaking show that isoften very funny and very dark. We should all be like Amy but we don'thave the guts so we laugh at her and call her crazy. But who is thetruly crazy one?

I was dubious at first but its growing on me
It took me a while to warm up to this show. This may be, in part, because my expectations were set very wrongly by some of the publicityI'd heard; I was expecting a comical romp poking fun at new-agespiritual therapy. It's not that. There's a taste of that, but this isreally about relationships, and it's really getting interesting. Thefirst couple of episodes, I'm now coming to understand, wereexposition, just setting up the situation. But now we're starting tosee a lot more development of the Amy/Levi, Amy/Mom, and, probably mostimportantly, Amy/Tyler relationships, and they're all quite nuanced andcredible. Laura Dern is great, but it's really an ensemble cast, andMike White, Luke Wilson, and Diane Ladd (Laura's real-life mom, I seefrom IMDb) deserve equal kudos. This is by far the best thing I've everseen Luke do; it's a "whoa, this guy can actually act" revelation onthe level of Charlize Theron in "Monster."I'll say the same thing others have said: don't give up on this onebased on the pilot and the first couple of episodes; it really doesseem to be taking off.

It gets better and more addictive by each episode
Very surprised by show's rating, gave it 10 to even score a bit. LuckyHBO did broadcasting it, otherwise based on IMDb rating shall had neverwatch it.This show starts slow, and, as others have written, a bit confusing, not knowing what bread it is. But it grows in me by each episode, becoming addictive by having an unique mix of creativity, human naturesincere exposure, and lot of common sense. Very much liked thenon-intrusive way of telling a story of a personality which, althoughis not of my taste at all, manages to make me sympathize with, andperhaps understand and accept.Well done.

Watch it!
The show is about one very flawed woman's struggle to become a betterand healthier person. She's clearly lost, but dedicated and passionatein a way which makes you admire her and be annoyed by her at the sametime. The show does a neat trick of manipulating the viewer intoalternatively mocking her because of her naivete and flakiness, andcheering for her out of empathy, both back and forth within singleepisodes. You come to expect her to crash and burn in a tragic andcomedic fashion. Yet in the end, she claims small victories ofenlightenment that put all of us in touch with our humanity and teachus a little bit about growth. The show is not preachy, yet makes itspoints poignantly and powerfully. I'm excited with anticipation as to where the show may go and hope itis renewed despite the poor ratings so far. Definitely my favorite newshow of the season.

not very convincing yet
I was hoping this series to be a more realistic approach to apersonality disorder like borderline personality disorder f ex., notlike United States of Tara which is an incredible series, but thiswould be different. Still to get the audience to be more attached orrelated to the main character they could do that because all the spinsand sudden changes she has are very common for someone with bpd obipolar, anyway... All the characters have so much strenght and so muchto give that it's very interesting and in a way you can expect muchmore from the series, but still we need more from the main character. We need to see more.

I Cant tell where this is going....
I cant tell whether they are making fun of people who becomeenlightened or if they feel they can enlighten the world stemming fromwhat seems to be a fairly vapid self-help seminar. "They" in thisreview refers to Mike White and Laura Dern who have their hands allover this new comedy/drama in fields of creation, production, directing, writing and performing. Maybe with less cooks in the kitchenthe show has more focus and self-control, but that focus isn't apparentto this reviewer yet. Maybe they are pointing out the futility ofchange or perhaps how jaded and impersonal the world around them hasbecome. The message is unclear, as I have no idea whether to root forour leading lady or hit some sense into her with a polo mallet. Theshow is fresh and unique, and its great to see Dern on the screen, aging but still looking good, I guess the mid 40's IS the new mid-30'sas her hair and clothing style reflect the latter. I have alwaysappreciated her skills, and its good to see her stretch out in thisone, but by the end of this 30 minute episode I was already getting bothbored and annoyed as the show is already getting a bit preachy and alot pretentious. Once again, the men are written as jerks as one is anumb corporate type who cheats and the other a drug addict.Even withthat, I will watch more episodes to see if the show manages to gainfocus, entertain, and cease the self- important message.

Charity begins at home
There is very little to like about this story.Basically this is the story of an angry egoistical self-centerednarcissistic woman who thinks she had a Revelation and her revelationallows her to wreak havoc on other people's life, always judgingeverybody but herself and self-righteous to the point one wants topuke. She is always ready to fantasize about her doing good in the world andothers being losers that need to be shepherded. But the reality is shewon't do anything for others except cause grief She survives terribleterrible ordeals such as taking the bus but not without bitching hermother for not letting her use her car for hours on end.It is really unclear what the message of the series is, or even thedirection or the tone. Are we to laugh? Are we to sympathize with thisboss sleeping woman? How many episodes are we expected to watch beforeshe begins to do something useful or are we to continue being impressedby so much goodwill and so many fake empty smiles and so little action?

Fantastic... the perfect mix of satire, drama, and dark comedy.
I started Enlightened around a week ago, mostly because the GoldenGlobes put it on the spot. As far as first seasons go, this was anexcellent one. It balances comedy and drama extremely well. Someepisodes are more dramatic, some more comedic, but it always remainstop notch. Laura Dern in the character of Amy is completely fantastic. She ownsthis character, which is perhaps one of TV's most fascinating andconfusing. Amy has our sympathy, we still want her to succeed, and shealways pretty much wants to look at things in a positive way. Theproblem is though, she isn't the person she wishes. She makes you feelher problems, yet also cringe and shake your head at the way sheapproaches aspects in her life. She's a good person who wants to dogood things, but she can also be extremely selfish and lacks any sortof self-awareness. Even in her most sticky situations, you want to rootfor her but you see her like many of her co-workers do... in a negativelight. Dern sells it all. Diane Ladd is also pretty fantastic as herdistant, yet also sympathetic and sometimes infuriating mother. Buteven she gets her own episode, which is perhaps the show's mosttouching and dramatic episode.Overall, this is an excellent mix of drama with both dark and lightcomedy. I feel it's sort of underrated and has gotten lost among otherbig-name shows.

Endarkened.
Not just a cheap display of intellect,Was literally in the dark after watching the pilot.Gave new meaning to the word ambiguous.Didn't know what to think or what to feel. Not above scathing dismissals but it was Laura Dern. So stuck it out and don't regret it.Going from acceptance and support to hostile skepticism is not easy. When you are listening to someone who knows what they are talking abouteverything sounds right and makes sense. A few minutes or few dayslater, when you have to substitute their experience and theirintelligence with your own, thats when everything gets a lot harder.Seeing her go from zen master to foulmouthed screecher, when left toher own devices is funny but credible. Strictly speaking these people aren't lying. They have used theirthought processes to create wealth and happiness for themselves butthat does not mean you will.Equality is a fine ideal but to believe that all men have the sameability, same skill or even the same amount of luck is absurd. Justbecause these people have found a marketable ability to earn revenuedoes not mean you are going to magically become a millionaire. So while willing herself to her dream job she wills herself straightinto the basement. For all the talk of freedom and liberation, none of this wisdom isfree. You have to buy the book, CD/DVD and your seat at the seminar. Seeing her struggle to pay the bill was a nice touch.Had to put my impulse for instant gratification on hold. You have to go at her pace as she tries to find a new path through herold life. More quietly enjoyable than laugh out loud, but still a funride. The cast is good but frankly if it wasn't for Laura would have quitafter the first half hour.Wish them well.Thank you.

Great Show
This show was not advertised in the UK, so I stumbled on this byaccident and I'm so glad that I did. It is up there as a favourite now. This show reminds me of Nurse Jackie, another great show, where itallows you to judge whether you think the characters are right/wrong orgood/bad - they are not telling you what to think of the characters. The cast is also great, both Laura Dern and Diane Ladd are fantastic asusual. I'm so pleased they have chosen to do TV because in recent yearsfilms have not taken notice of their great talents. Luke Wilson is thebest I've ever seen him act. I love the motley crew of people she workswith - great acting all round. Also a TV show where a person actually does a full time job without thejob being the main premise of the show.
