A long and rambling comedy about nothing.

Wait for it on DVD
Story line was unnecessary, wasn't focused on the dinner or schmucks it was all about Paul Rud and his dumb little girl friend having a moral issue with the dinner.Save the money and wait for this one to come out on DVD unless your really bored and nothing else is out.

One good scene in search of an entire movie.

A fun and light diversion!
This was an enjoyable movie. Not thought-provoking or original butstill fun. You've seen the story before in many guises so you'll knowhow it'll end but... It's still worth it. Pleasant and entertainingthroughout. Light and kid friendly without being overly sweet. Payattention to the main menu. The scenes displayed in this loop are evenfun to watch. The moral of the story is certainly apparent but I didn'tfeel as if it was screaming to be noticed. A guilt free comedy. You canlaugh at all the characters (even the bad guys) while still feelingsome empathy for them. (As with virtually all DVD's, skip the specialfeatures, they're not.)

Comedic blend of Apatow heartFarrelly Bros instincts LaBute underpinings hysterically funny - Rudd Carell make an inspired odd couple
DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS (2010) ***1/2 Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, ZachGalifianakis, Jemaine Clement, Stephanie Szotstak, Lucy Punch, BruceGreenwood, David Walliams, Ron Livingston, Larry Wilmore, KristenSchaal, PJ Byrne, Andrea Savage, Lucy Davenport, Chris O'Dowd, JeffDunham, Octavia Spencer, Rick Overton, Patrick Fischler. Hystericallyfunny high concept comedy  loosely based on the popular French farce"Le Diner de Cons"  with nice guy corporate ladder climber Ruddfinding himself invited to the titular soiree  which involves theinvitee to bring along the most ridiculous loser they can find tohumiliate (enter doofus Carell having a field day and milking somepathos with the pathetic). What comes across as a hyper blend of Apatowheartwarming gross out comedy with Farrelly Brothers' instincts and anundercoating of bilious Neil LaBute, the film runs on all comedycylinders with no holds-barred with some truly hilarious bits (namelyRudd attempting to coerce his fiancée Szotstak away from pompous ass'artist' Clement who nearly steals the movie) and a few genuinesequences of emotional breakdowns (namely Carell's nemesis IRScolleague Galifianakis and his 'hypnotic mind puppetery'!) Love themeticulous 'mousterpieces' that Carell turns into art (dioramas oftaxidermied mice!) (Dir: Jay Roach)

All in All it was a good movie
It wasn't an overall terrible movie; but then again it really wasn'tthe best movie I had ever seen either! The plot of the movie was alittle illicit, but then again aren't most... Well, in this case it wasabsolutely blurred by the sheer stupidity of the movie. I did however find myself smiling or laughing the majority of themovie. I did want to occasionally punch a few of the characters in themovie, but there are always a few of these in each movie, then whatwould make the movies good? (Ya got me here...) As I am a softy, therewere a few parts in which I did get a little sad, because I alwaysenjoy the development and flourishing of a romance. But overall, my final score is a 7/10.

Comedy is often when something tragic happens to someone else. But when that someone is as sweetly guileless as Carell's Barry Speck... the laughter is muffled by he-doesn't-deserve-that sighs.

Funny... Hilarious, actually.
It's not often that a movie can make me laugh almost constantlythrough. Call my humor immature, because it is. If you're into stupidhumor, this is the movie for you. If you are into more sophisticatedhumor, then this is definitely NOT the movie for you.Maybe it's because I love Steve Carell, no matter what he does, ormaybe it's some other reason, but this movie kept me entertained andlaughing the entire time. The characters that were supposed to be funnywere hilarious to me, especially Zack Galifianakis' character(Therman).Again, a great movie for those who enjoy immature humor. For those whodon't, probably a bomb of a film.

This is a copy of a 1998 Hindi film
I am amazed at the reception this movie gets. All you need to do iswatch the Hindi movie Le Diner De Cons (Or Dinner Game) to understandwhy I have given this a rating of 2. It simply is a frame-for-framecopy. I haven't seen plagiarism so blatant in a Hollywood movie.Even simple scenes like showing the doctor the bathroom, the dogs inthe car, reference to phrases like 'the last supper' are straightlifts. All Jay Roach and his team has done is to hire translatorsinstead of screenplay writers.Welcome Jay Roach to the ever-burgeoning group of 'inspired' directors, whose poster-boy is Mr Sanjay Gupta(Oldb..and reservoir...ahem..Zindaand Kaante fame) Dinner for Schmodd is a direct frame-by-frame copy of'The Dinner Game', a rib-tickling Hindi comedy by Francis Veber Whenwill filmmakers start giving credit to the original movie makers? Itsone thing to use a story as a framework and foundation, but here eventhe screenplay is copied. The sad part is people who haven't seen 'theDinner game' hail this movie. Shame on the director and producer of'Dinner for Schmuck' for not acknowledging the source of this movie.Dinner for Schmods beats everything what people like Steve Carell andPaul Rudd have done before. However, watch the Hindi movie. Highlyrecommended.

Its because I know strange people
The premise of this movie is a little silly. I did however laugh my ---off. The thing is the chief complants here are two. One the characterson unrealistic, maybe it's because I'm from New York (although anyonefrom Cali should know) that people this strange do exist. I'm friendswith more than my far share. Second complaint people have, is that it'smean. It isn't, how is it? *WARNING SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ITSKIP TO NEXT PARAGRAPH* It has a happy ending, how mean can that be. I liked it better than the Hangover. It's a silly comedy, if you likedStep Brothers, you will probably like this. It's good goofy fun, andactually kind of feel good.

It's been a while since I've seen a movie that caused me to go back and forth more than a rocking horse at the Gosselin compound. But "Dinner for Schmucks" has me riding the fence and humming The Eagles' Desperado.

It's funny from the beginning, and it stays funny, even as it beats scenes to death and overstays its welcome.

People can be clumsy and likable - so can films
Barry (Steve Carell) really gets under your skin, and, like an itch heisn't going to be scratched away. The beautiful opening titles of thisfilm are, deliberately I would guess, out of keeping with a lot of whatfollows. The premise here is, at heart, what makes people good, bad andindifferent and how this impacts on their relationships with others. The film predicates that whilst we may not be able to significantlychange ourselves, close others can tell us when we are changing forbetter or worse.Carell is pretty convincing as a clammy but gifted, in his own way, guy, and Paul Rudd (as Tim) does his best to be an even bigger schmuckand as equally irritating as Carell but in a different way. The plotcentres around Tim's career and love life, the latter based upon hiscurrent interest Julie (Stephanie Szostak) who is beautiful andevasive, and Darla (brilliantly portrayed by Lucy Punch) who won't letour Tim go.The comedic content of this film is a mixture of sharp satire, wittydialogue, slapstick, sight gags and straight forward one liners, andthe characters are easy to pitch into the good, bad or indifferentboxes. The film irritates the hell out of you at times because that iswhat characters like Barry do, but you feel dreadfully sorry for himwhen he is hurt. And it isn't just Barry who irritates. Most of thecast grate on you in one way or another proving that, from best toworse personality wise, there isn't much difference. Indeed it is hardto find the normal idea of a straightforward character in the plot suchare the contradictions and eccentricities of almost all, even Tim inhis weakest moments.I'd like to say the Dinner for Schmucks, when it arrives, is worth thewait, but it is probably the weakest point of the entire plot. That isnot to say what was on offer wasn't funny, it is just hard to judgejust who the biggest schmucks were. As I said the film can be clumsy inplaces but it doesn't stop you liking it.This isn't a comedy classic but it is worth the viewing. Six out of tenand a big silver star for Lucy Punch.

Either Edit this film or just go see the original French film instead...
The original French version of this film has a tight script, it'swhimsical, witty, and sweet. However, this adaptation is a clumsy messof too many coincidences, plots, and over-the-top characters. The filmis two hours long and needs a half hour edited out of it to make itwatchable. The film also has too many characters who only confuse theplot and could have lost the old girlfriend, the secretary, the IRSboss, the artist, or the other schmucks, and worked much better. Therewere also plot holes and contradictions, with references to the dinnerbeing a monthly event but also an annual event. In the end, the biggestproblem is that this film needs a lot of editing. By the time thedinner scene FINALLY comes around, I was checking my watch to see howmuch more I had to sit through! There are some funny scenes and I didlaugh out loud. The mouseterpieces were also well done and a great ideafor the schmuck's hobby. However, I would not recommend anyone wastetheir money to see this in the theatres.

Clearly took one funny movie about Tim's relationships and succumbed to the Hollywood pandergeist "we're making a movie with Dinner in the title, there is gonna be a damn dinner!" But Carell makes it very sweet.

I like these three guys. I'd just rather catch them in a different movie.

Hands Down the Best Comedy of 2010
I haven't laughed this much since The Hangover. This movie wasabsolutely hilarious and exactly what was expected from Steve Carell. His character was just brilliant. Paul Rudd was excellent and offcoursethe man who needs no introduction: Zach Galifianakis was at his best. Ican see why some people wouldn't like this movie if their sense ofhumor did not like the Hangover then they will no like this movie. Ithad many clever moments, excellent comic timings, and very wickedstoryline. Also if ur an office space fan then your in for a treatbecause Ron Livingston is in this movie and this movie had a lot ofenvironment like office space and Ron Livingston had a new role which ufans will love. Overall I loved every aspect of this movie and wishthere would be another movie with the same Steve Carell's role.

A waste of Paul Rudds and Jay Roachs respective talents and a waste of celluloid!
Thank goodness I waited for this film to be released on DVD and didn'tspend any money to see it in the theater. Though I'm not a greatadmirer of Steve Carell's work, I watched this film because of PaulRudd (of whom I first became aware in "The Object of My Affection",released in 1998). Only because of Paul Rudd did I watch this film toits end. Unfortunately, I wasted two hours of my life. Though thepremise held some promise, the end result was VERY disappointing, onesignificant reason for which is that the viewer has to ENDURE (that'sthe correct word) the unfathomable and, by extension, UNFUNNY messBarry (Steve Carell) creates for Tim (Paul Rudd) before getting to theactual dinner, which itself has little going for it beyond what occursbetween Barry and Therman (Zach Galifianakis). Director Jay Roach wasobviously not up to snuff when he directed this mess and Writers DavidGuion and Michael Handelman did very poorly in their adaptation of "TheDinner Game".

Very Cute
This review is from: Dinner for Schmucks (Amazon Instant Video) Cute movie! Humor is sometimes subtle but the actors(Steve Carrell mostly)are so genuine that you feel their pain and embarrassment. There are lots of laugh out loud moments. Certainly good for an entertaining evening. Mostly accurate on rating of PG-13.
