Storyline

Plot Summary:

Fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) directs the first movie he didnt write himself Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) as mismatched cops. When a bust goes wrong, they get suspended, forcing Willis to sell a treasured baseball card in order to pay for his daughters wedding. But while selling the card, it gets stolen, sending the pair on a wild chase featuring a parkour-loving housebreaker, a hot Latina trapped in the trunk of a Mercedes-Benz, a 10-year-old car thief, and a lot of other goofiness. Its hard to believe that Smith didnt have a hand in the writing, as the comedy has all of his loose, ramshackle habits (and his reliance on jokes about poop and male genitalia)--though much of it also has the feel of being improvised by Willis and Morgan. Cop Out wants to mock buddy-cop movies, but it also wants to be a buddy-cop movie these conflicting impulses are never harmonized, so the whole movie feels out of tune. The star-studded supporting cast includes Jason Lee, Michelle Trachtenberg, Seann William Scott, Fred Armisen, Kevin Pollak, Adam Brody, Rashida Jones, and Susie Essman.

Kevin Smith had no control over this movie...

I saw Cop Out last night and man was this bad. It had a few scenes thatwere mildly funny and some of the dialogue had some of that Kevin Smithstyle, but overall this movie was horrible. Even a big name like BruceWillis couldn't save this movie.I blame the Warner Brothers studio, whom I believe had too much controlover this film.Kevin(Smith), what happened?? How did you end up doing this movie??If Smith would have written this movie, I'm sure it would havesucceeded...The music didn't fit the movie at all, I felt like I was watchingFletch (if anyone remembers that)! And one final note Tracy Morgan, should never, ever act! That's my 2 cents...

Cop Out

Standard cop buddy movie, except this comedy, directed by Kevin Smith, contains a ludicrous plot about a detective team, Bruce Willis andTracy Morgan, attempting to retrieve a baseball card (!) from a PuertoRican drug lord. Willis' daughter (Michelle Trachtenberg) is gettingmarried and the price tag for the wedding is $48,000(!) so he decidesto sell his beloved baseball card kept from his youth worth about$80,000, which is stolen by a pair of thieves (one is Seann WilliamScott, still using the Stifler character from "American Pie"; he simplycannot create a character absent that sh#t-eating grin and annoyingpersonality), later sold to a drug lord, Poh Boy (Guillermo Díaz; hisLA gangster, in a wifebeater shirt, wearing a heavy scowl, speaking ina thick Spanish dialect, is your basic cliché) who is a baseballjunkie. After a drug bust goes awry, leading to the murder of aninformant, losing the killer during a foot chase, Willis and Morgan(wearing a Cell Phone costume!) are suspended without pay—while onsuspension, the pair try to get the baseball card back through areluctant negotiation with Poh Boy demanding the return of a stolenMercedes in exchange for what Willis so desires. A woman found in thetrunk of this Mercedes with a cross necklace containing drug contactsis what Poh Boy really wants pulling Willis and Morgan into a war withthe vicious gangster. Smith's Cop Out is loaded with swearing andMorgan "homaging" other movies, using throw-away lines from movies hewatched on cable. Willis brings back the John McLaine act, playingstraight man to Morgan's comic shenanigans. Morgan is married to thebeautiful Rashida Jones, paranoid that she is sleeping with theirnext-door neighbor. William Scott knows parkour (the street jumping actwhere agile, athletic young men can move about with speed and accuracyup and down any objects they come across) and likes to repeat whatothers say which becomes tired really quickly; he has got to find a newact because the Stifler clown character has wore out its welcome. JasonLee, a Smith regular, has a nice cameo as the stepfather of Willis'daughter, willing to pay for the wedding; Willis obviously can't standhim because he's successful and rich and has been there for hisdaughter. Adam Brody and Kevin Pollak are detectives assigned toinvestigate a series of murders ordered by Poh Boy as a result of theloss of the Mercedes and the "merchandise" along with it--they seem tobe "rivals" of Willis and Morgan, although all four help each other inthe big shoot out with Poh Boy's "troops" during the finale. I wasn'tfeeling this movie; I thought the film's comedy fell flat mostly, eventhough Morgan tries his damnedest to make the audience laugh with asteady stream of expressions, along with his shtick involving thedistrust of his wife. The dialogue, attempting to tickle our funnybone,is forced and, to be honest, a steady diet of curse words (five f-bombsin a sentence does little to make me laugh) didn't necessarily helpmatters either. While there is gunfire in the movie, "Cop Out" issurprisingly PG-13 violent, earning an R-rating due to the stronglanguage and sexually explicit dialogue (some of the supposed humorconcerns Morgan's wife thanks to wise-cracking William Scott who justcan't help himself).

Un- be-LIEV-ably Bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just watched "Cop Out" on DVD, and I'm hard-pressed to think of a worse movie I've ever seen.I can't help but wonder why Willis ever agreed to be in this thing. He actually knows his stuff, and must be desperate for money to have agreed to appear in this debacle. As to the sidekick guy, Tracy Morgan... Never heard of him before, and now I know why. Who told this guy he could act? He's so over-the-top that he has to look up to see down. The sad thing is that apparently someone somewhere thinks this guy's funny. If funny means shouting out all your lines with no sense of the scene or what's supposed to be going on around you, then maybe they're right. Even for all his professionalism, it looked to me like Willis was having a hard time putting up with this guy's antics.Script? What script? We don' need no steenkin' script! Was there actually someone who wants to claim to have written this mess?Kevin Smith is credited as Director. The same guy who directed "Dogma", a movie I actually consider pretty good. In light of that, I have to wonder what happened. Was he directing in absentia? Maybe from another continent? Boozed up out of his mind? What? As far as I could tell, there WAS no directing going on."Beyond The Valley of the Dolls" was a terrible movie that was so bad it became a camp/cult classic. Unfortunately, this fiasco isn't even that good. It'll sink so fast that if they put it on top of the BP oil well spill, it would stop all oil flow from under the waves world-wide.MINUS Ten Stars!

Foul-mouthed and mostly funny, Cop Out is an above-average movie.

I had the chance to watch Cop Out online at IMDbVIP. When I first heardthat Kevin Smith was making a film called A Couple of Dicks, I was in.When I heard that Kevin Smith was making a film with Bruce Willis andTracy Morgan, I was in. When I heard the title was being changed to CopOut, I was mildly disappointed but I was still in. When I saw the firsttrailer and it did not look like a Kevin Smith film, I was in but to aslightly lesser degree. When I saw the red-band trailer and it feltmore like a Keven Smith movie, I felt reassured and I was in. When Ilearned that Kevin Smith did not write the script, I became curious. Now that I have seen the film, I am out and I feel OK.

Cop Out (A.K.A. All the other good movie titles were taken so we got stuck with this one)

Painful to watch. Absurd story line. Dull action. Slow moving trainwreck. Those are the words I am using to describe Bruce Willis' andTracy Morgan's new movie "Cop Out." Five being the number of times Ilaughed in the almost two-hour long tragedy. Although, I think it wasintended to be a comedy. The story begins with Jimmy (Willis) and Paul (Morgan) interrogating asuspect in a drug case. It also happens to be their nine-yearanniversary of being partners on the NYPD. Laugh No. 1: theinterrogation scenes were partially funny because Paul, whilephysically and verbally abusing his suspect, was quoting cop movies hehad seen. The scene does take a clever jab at a Willis movie. The film quickly moves into the typical 1980s buddy cop movie. I thinkthat the writers simply Netflixed the entire buddy cop genre oneweekend and wrote notes on what they thought was funny. Robb and MarkCullen wrote the screenplay and Kevin Smith of "Clerks" fame directed.Jimmy and Paul go on an assignment and make a few mistakes that resultsin losing their badges for 30 days. Who takes their badges away? It isthe stereotypical angry police captain that has had enough of theirantics. Sorry, seen it before, guys.Jimmy soon finds himself in a situation where he needs $48,000 and iswithout a job. Oh no, how will Jimmy ever find a way get the money? Itturns out that Jimmy has a very valuable baseball card and when he goesto sell the card, it's stolen by Dave (Seann William Scott). The cardends up in the hands of a ruthless Mexican gang leader who housesbaseball memorabilia worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in a$25,000 home in the ghetto.During this train wreck, I couldn't find a time where I really caredabout any of the characters; Willis seemed to be phoning most of hislines into the movie. Morgan was being, well, Tracy Morgan. That wasactually a good thing. He plays the sensitive dumb wit so well thatit's fun to watch him on "30 Rock." But, when I can watch him be a goofball for free on Thursday nights, why would I pay $10 on Friday towatch him to play the same character? The rest of the story is aboutJimmy trying to get his baseball card back from the Mexican gang who isusing Jimmy and Paul to retrieve a stolen Mercedes. Dave comes backinto the story with laugh No. 2 where they have a juvenile joke festwhile figuring out if Paul's wife is cheating on him. Laugh No. 3 comessoon after that with a little physical pain to an 11-year-old boy (Idon't advocate violence upon children, but I will laugh at it when itis done right). The story moves slowly into finding an angry Mexicanwoman. I assume the casting agent hired her because she is pretty andshe could scream/ curse in Spanish for the remaining 45 minutes of thefilm.Laugh No. 4 and the last one (Sorry, there was no laugh No. 5. I wasgiving the movie a handicap out of pity), was when the credits wererolling. It takes place in a morgue and as far as morbid pranks areconcerned it was funny. Again the joke was by Scott, which makes me ask- why didn't he get his name on the movie poster? He did most of thework. There you have it, a 1980s cop comedy that would have been funny 25years ago. Maybe it was paying homage to the cop comedies we grew up onbut then again maybe this is simply a lost cause. Pay attention to themusical score and you'll hear the 1980s Casio Synthesizer used inmovies like "Fletch" and "Beverly Hills Cop." It brought me back to asimpler time when these jokes were fresh and new.Should you see this movie? Please don't. Save your $10, watch "30 Rock"and rent "Die Hard" and you'll see Willis and Morgan in their bestelements.

Only Morgan reaches the heights of inspired silliness to which the movie aspires, though not nearly enough to redeem Smith's shoddiest outing to date.

Smith's directorial style is far too slack for this material, which aims to be an homage to populist '80s classics like 48 Hrs. and Lethal Weapon, but only winds up resembling one of the bargain-bin knockoffs that floundered in those films' wake.

This movie was hilarious!

This movie is hilarious! There's a few stand-out scenes that had meliterally in tears laughing so hard. There are a few moments wherenothing hilarious happens in it, like my friend says, but the scenesthat are funny are just too good. I DEFINITELY wouldn't mind watchingthis movie again. The interrogation scene in the beginning, the carride when the guy's in the backseat...f***** hilarious! I really don'tsee why this movie doesn't have a higher rating. If you're like me, and you love anything related to comedy, then iwould highly recommend this movie. I keep telling my friend how this isa great year for comedy movies. Death at a Funeral, Grown Ups, Cop Out,Hot Tub Time Machine, Get Him to the Greek...Got me feeling likeMcDonald's...I'm loving it!

911, officer in distress...

The main problem is Morgan; cast someone else, and this might have beenadequate.OK, the script isn't the best, but you have a great soundtrack andWillis doing his thing. Morgan just doesn't know when to play subtleand when to let loose. He's a screaming banshee for the lions share ofhis supposedly comedic moments in the movie. A contender for hisfunniest moment is when he's dressed as a mobile phone, and that hasnothing to do with mannerisms, that's just costuming. (or when he'seating, and therefore not saying anything... )I would rather have seen Martin Lawrence partner Willis, and even thatis erring a bit on the low budget side... At least he has experience ofcrackling cop chemistry, with Will Smith on the Bad Boys franchise. There's not a single character moment as "Paul" that he - and no doubtother contenders - couldn't have delivered better. Morgan is like a mandesperately trying to swim, but drowning nevertheless. If you're looking for a parody of buddy movie clichés, try "The OtherGuys"...

These Cops are Out for NUTTINESS Distress

Director Kevin Smith ("Clerks", "Zack & Miri Make A Porno", etc.)decided to "branch out" and for once direct a film he himself did NOTwrite, namely, this. But he did keep his ability to construct a filmplayed with a bunch of good LAUGHS: … Bruce Willis plays Jimmy Monroe ,a veteran cop (--now, there's an "unusual" role for him!…) His partneris Paul Hodges (Tracy Morgan), who loves reciting dialogue from famousFILMS when interrogating suspects-- to the amusement of Bruce who findshim horribly "hammy"… … Bruce's daughter Ava (Michelle Trachtenberg) is about to get marriedin 6 weeks, & she & her mother Pam (his divorced wife, played byFrancie Swift) want a big, expensive wedding costing nearly $ 50,000.Bruce is deeply displeased when the new "step-dad" Roy (Jason Lee)offers to pay for it instead, & vows to find a way to cover the cost onhis own… … Covering it means Bruce has to sell a rare BASEBALL CARD of AndyPafko (who played for the Chicago Cubs, tho that's not the card inquestion)… As he tries to do that, a smart-alec crook named Dave (SeannWilliam Scott) chances to ROB him & the store he's at-- whichnecessitates Bruce & "oblivious" Tracy trying to find him to recoverthe card… When they do find him, he drives Tracy crazy with hisnonsense patter… … In order to try to catch a gang of violent Mexican criminals in NewYork, Tracy dons a costume as a Cell Phone as if he's working at acommunications store. But, when the store is shot up, he & Bruce getsuspended from the force, to the delight of their jealous fellow copsHunsaker (Kevin Pollak) & his partner Barry Mangold (Adam Brody)...… Bit by bit, Bruce & Tracy (who's doubting the fidelity of his wife)track down Bruce's card to being in the possession of Poh Boy(Guillermo Diaz), the leader of the gang of Mexican criminals who alsohappens to be a big collector of sports-related memorabilia… In returnfor the card, Guillermo wants Bruce to find a car he's had stolen fromhis control… … Naturally, Sean, Kevin & Adam get "caught-up" in the variousmachinations of the main characters… Will Bruce FIND the car (& the"secret" item INSIDE of it that Guillermo really wants)?… Will Bruceget his CARD back?… Will Tracy find out if his wife (Rashida Jones) hasbeen FAITHFUL to him?… What will happen to Sean, Kevin & Adam?… … There were loads of "full" LAUGHS, both to the situations & thenuttiness of Tracy + in appreciation for how well he partnered withBruce… Yes, a bunch of it is "CHEESY" and / or "SILLY" humor, but it'sreally effective, enjoyable, & the movie (with a bundle of action to goalong with the amusement) is a lot of FUN… A SUCCESSFUL"buddy"-action-comedy…

Now I know the definition of Bad

Wow-- this was the worse movie I have ever seen. I took my wife and two sons, ages 15 and 17, out to dinner and then to the movies to have a few laughs. The trailers peaked our interest and we were in the mood to chuckle at Mr. Morgan. Unfortunately, the only laughter we shared was my son's making fun of me for picking the movie. Needless to say I have loss my movie picking privileges for the near future. Please save your money.

Viva Brooklyn!

In one year, Brooklyn alone gave birth to the four hits: Cop Out, Brooklyn's Finest, Armored, and Surrogates, two of which starring Bruce Willis. In Cop Out, Willis regained his vigor and youthfulness, compared to his drained and wasted appearance in Surrogates. Tracy Morgan's role took away the boredom from Willis' familiar and predictable style of acting. Morgan's untainted performance made his comedy refreshing. His charismatic nature and great sociability enriched the failing morale of the movie industry. Getting Morgan to uplift the seasoned Willis and embarking on the richness of Brooklyn's diverse culture was wiser than Travolta's pick of Robin Williams (in Old Dogs) or Paris (From Paris with Love)to regain an edge. You would hope that John McCain have learned how to pick his running mate before naming Palin.Like Brooklyn's Finest, Cup Out deals with the [unfine] life of New York cops. The two partners, each has his marital problems, low pay, and inability to stay close to home. The divorced one must find a way to pay for his daughter's wedding. A Sport's memorabilia was his only hope out of his financial crisis. Selling his precious piece of memorabilia got him in an O.J.-like armored rubbery. The movie dwells on how police-victim would retrieve his stolen memorabilia by tracing the robber to the Mexican gangs. The choice of the Mexican gangster was superb. The two police couple must make a deal with the Mexican Gang leader in order to retrieve their stolen property. In such arrangement, suspicion, murder, and betrayal are the rules of the game. Even though the two cops retrieved the stolen precious card, it was damaged beyond hope. The greatest entertainment in the movie were the richness and innovation of Tracy Morgan in acting uninhibited with real life content; the Mexican boys' exquisite ability to play the snappy and sharp anger that characterized the street gang; and the Italian house lady who outmatched the two cops in protecting her Italian made furniture and carpet. All was displayed on the magnificent highways and landscape of the Big Apple and the never ending humor of walking into a police- ridden workplace.

Burce must have needed the money

I have a lot of his movies but this one is terrible. If the acting was equal to the cussing it would be a great movie. You will get more enjoyment if you took the cash, put it in the commode and watched it go around. Bad acting, bad script, and every other word cussing.

Between the scat, snot and drool references, it seems that the targeted audience is an 8-year-old boy named Timmy. A crying shame -- and Timmy might just do that -- since the MPAA rating forbids his attendance.
