Storyline
Plot Summary:
A young woman grows up to be a stone-cold assassin after witnessing her parents murder as a child in Bogota. Mildly entertaining but forgettable
An assassin goes on a killing spree in order to avenge the brutalmurder of her parents which she witnessed as a child.It is not surprising to see Luc Besson producing a film with such asynopsis, as we are in familiar waters here. Once again employing oneof his collaborator as director, Olivier Megaton, the story haselements that we often see with Besson. Pure characters whose innocenceis lost at the hand of larger than life villains and hyper competentbadasses with a heart of gold are a staple of Besson's filmography.You've seen such motifs in Leon, Kiss of the Dragon, The Transporter,Taken and a few others.Even though the recipe can be overused, it is such a good one that itusually gives an entertaining result and sometimes, even the worseclichés can make a solid entry, such as 2008's Taken. Unfortunately,with Colombiana, something is missing in the ingredients.On the surface, Colombiana has a lot going for it. Aesthetically, themovie is nice to look at, although no shot is truly memorable. Theediting is tight and on par with a standard action movie. Zoe Saldanagives an OK performance but never truly gives the character any depth.The rest of the cast is adequate but have very little to work with. Asgreat as Cliff Curtis can be, you cannot work from a vacuum. But thebiggest culprit is the story, which tries to cram a lot of elements andends up neglecting most of them. Scenes from the protagonist'schildhood add very little emotional investment for viewers as they passby quickly and stretch believability to the extreme. Scenes featuringher uncle-mentor have very little substance, likewise for scenesfeaturing her romantic interest. All these characters end up eatingscreen time without adding much to the story.But Colombiana's cardinal sin may be the way it handles action scenes.Although there are quite a few, none of them is very memorable orhandled particularly well. An action movie with a silly story may beredeemed by action scenes but here it isn't the case. Comparatively,Megaton's debut, La Sirene Rouge, had much less action scenes but thosefew were handled much better.Colombiana is a good way to kill time for fans of action movies butoffers little to anyone else.

A good action movie
Zoe Saldana is a star on the rise, she's strong, beautiful, intelligentand a decent actress. Time to test her star meter as she takes the leadfor the first time on her own in an action film. In Hollywood, it'srare to have an action movie staring a female, you need a good actressto take the lead in order for it to be taken seriously. But myboyfriend really wanted to see this movie because he just adores Zoe, Ithink he just has a good crush on her, but it was his turn for therental. We watched it a couple nights ago and to my surprise withoutany knowledge of the film prior to seeing it, I really did enjoy thismovie. I'm a little surprised at the rating as this is a better moviethat I've seen for a while at least for 2011. I thought Zoe made agreat action star, she was tough, sexy and brought a lot to a typicalstory.Fabio, a gangster and drug runner, has a meeting with Don Luis, to payoff his remaining debt and leave his employment. Fabio, however, knowsthat Don Luis will put a hit out on him for leaving with a valuableitem that he holds and wants, a small disk with valuable information onthe drug lords, so he rushes home to prepare his wife, Alicia and hisyoung daughter, Cataleya. Fabio hands Cataleya the item that Don Luiswants, telling her not to lose it and to give it to the Ambassadortelling her that it is "her passport". He also gives Cataleya anaddress in Chicago. She then uses the business card her father gave herto get into the U.S. Embassy and goes to the Ambassador's office. Inexchange for this, they give her a passport and a small amount of cash,and fly her to Miami. She goes to Chicago after and meets her uncleEmilio, who teaches her how to become one of the slickest killers. Shegrows into a strong woman who eventually goes in above her head goinginto a personal revenge plot on her parent's death.The story may be predictable, but I liked the way it was handled overall. The action scenes were very tight and exciting. I loved that firstscene with Cataleyna in the jail cell, it was very clever and almostreminded me of Catwoman the way she was just sliding her way throughthings. One thing I wished they would have talked about more was herfeeling so lonely, it's a very brief conversation she has with herlover when he asks what she feels every night and it's never touched onagain. She goes through this tough time as a child and it was just liketo see her as an adult was more about the fighting and not thestruggles she faces at times. But the actors did a good job, muchcredit to the man who played her uncle, Cliff Curtis, who had excellentchemistry with her. The film does need to explain more with the storybut I felt that this was still a good movie with it's action andcharacters. Zoe is a good actress and I can't wait to see her more inthe future.7/10

liked it a lot
This is a great movie! Incredible skill in movie- making had been usedon this one. The movie gets us to sympathize a family and person whichactions we normally should / would not sympathize. A great plot, greatacting, perfect balance of action and sensitivity. I really have a hardtime understanding how people could actually rate this one under asolid 7. I mean, come on a 5,9? This actually makes me think twice now,when searching IMDb for apparently "good" movies, only taking inconsideration those who are above a certain rating. I really recommend watching this movie for everyone who likes actionmovies on the level (or even above) james bond, mission impossible etc

Poor action movie trends from vanilla to bland
There are so many movies with a identical framework to this movie, somegood, many awful. To succeed, you must present unique and enviableprotagonists, wow with interesting action and stealth clips and providea partially compelling story. This movie lacks in every case. I wasexcited to see Zoe Saldana in this role and found her very mediocre.But when I noticed the rest of the cast, i was worried that this moviewas going to rely on her too much. This was unfortunately the casewhich is sad, because I believe if one or two more good names were inthis movie, they might have accented her role and provided some form ofchemistry. The result however was a very generic, rough around theedges hard to relate to movie. The few bright spots, were someinteresting action and stealth sequences which bordered onimpossibility and embellishment. Overall, I would not recommend thismovie to anyone, unless they had absolutely nothing better to do.

Its a hit with me!
COLUMBIANA by Director Oliver Megaton (Transporter 3) tells the storyof a young girl, who after witnessing the cold-blooded murder of herparents by a rival drug cartel boss vows to reap revenge on theirkillers.In a brisk, but action-packed opening to the film, 9 year old Cataleyaescapes the fatal mob hit on her family  and takes refuge with heruncle in California. Here she makes plain her desire for revenge andasks her Uncle (also a mob boss) to "educate" her in the ways of themob.As Cataleya gets more adept, and skillful in her trade, she (inaddition to working for her uncle as a hit-woman by day), then alsostarts to take out members of the mob that murdered her parents in herpart time.Cataleya soon becomes so successful at her "trade" that she has takenout 22 gang members in 4 years  which raises alarm bells  and soonshe is on the radar of the police, the FBI, SWAT, and the various mobs.Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek XI, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse ofthe Black Pearl) excels in the lead role, she is very sexy, is a veryable actress, and plays Cataleya so adeptly, that you would havethought that this was a role specifically written for her. She commandsevery scene she is in, with grace, style and vigour  to make the partone of the strongest women's lead roles I've seen for ages. This is anactress that will go far.Credit should also go to Amandla Stenberg who plays an excellent rolein the portrayal of the young Cataleya.COLUMBIANA is 107mins long, is a PG-13 certificate and will be ongeneral release from Friday, 9th Sept 2011, and is well recommended asa good action thriller with a twist.

Suspension of disbelief is not enough...
Firstly, though this film may, MAY, rate a four, I'm rating lower toeven the field.I'm amazed at all the positive reviews. Acting is hardly mediocre, mostespecially the lead. Flat even for a cliché role. And the plot isatrociously contrived and ends up with more holes than the bad guys.Foremost: Cataleya is not searched after being arrested. You can't plowinto a police car, drunk, and expect to see daylight until a verysubstantial bail is payed in cash AFTER an arraignment. Ohhh, and ajail that has pop-open ventilation grills? Fed Cops put a high riskinmate in a cell without inspecting it first? The list goes on.Why did the CIA sit idly after letting the Colombian dogs out and notalert the Feds? Did they not think to follow the hounds they set free?Surely at least to have the Feds watch the safehouse as the CIA isjurisdiction bound to operate only off US soil. How and why did theFeds suddenly go from a precinct full of suspects to a drunk womanwhose cell picture suddenly becomes a 3D image to verify a match thatwarrants a swat assault without further surveillance? And does ourHeroine get a van inside a CIA safe-house unnoticed by either CIA orthe Cartel after poking her hottest buttons? And don't get me startedon the extremely weak plot device under the guise of romance thatmerely opened more plot mayhem.Luc Besson wrote this? I don't believe that, or maybe he just wantedUropa stockholders to have a thrill. HaHa,weeeeeeeeeee! Some said thisfilm was action-packed. HUH? The only good action in this film is thefirst chase scene in Colombia, the rest are canned bang bang pieces.If the objective is to showcase strong woman in strong roles then don'tchop their legs of with a weak plot. Sorry Zoe.

Trust Me! its not THAT bad
I can understand why Colombiana is getting some tough reviews. Itdoesn't feature Colombian actors, it wasn't really filmed in Columbia,and this type of movie has been done so many times before. KillBill(2003-2004), Enough(2002), The Brave One(2007), I Spit on YourGrave(1978), Coffy(1973. The list goes on and on. Women seeking revengefor something. However, I will say Colombiana was FAR better than I thought. I wasexpecting a predictable, loud, cat and mouse action movie with a lot ofexplosions and guns. It does have a lot of explosions and guns, but itwas not as predictable as I thought and the acting wasn't outstandingbut definitely good enough. Zoe Saldana carries the movie with ease andadds a lot to a script with average character development and plot. Colombiana is a good action flick with a great leading actress anddecent supporting characters. It's not something I would have on my top10 list at the end of the year but think about it, I took 6-7 minutesto do a review on it which I only do if the movie was memorable and itwas.Colombiana: acting:B, plot:B-, dialogue:C+

Pero qu dem?
Aside the fact that this movie has been done 10000 times and it'sbasically the usual Hollywood trash, I would say: If you gonna make amovie named "Colombiana" (which implies that your gonna, in a way oranother, touch the matter of being born in Colombia, and that of theColombianity, I suppose), why not to pick an actress that actually canpass as a Colombian, and whose accent resembles the Colombian accent?(certainly not a Dominican girl, whose accent doesn't resemble at allthe accent from the zone of Bogotá). Watching the scenes that weresupposed to happen in Colombia, you can hear actors with Spanish,Mexican, even Cuban accent... not a single one with Colombian accent.Isn't a little bit "gñé"? Besides, if you're gonna spend millions ofdollars making it, why not to -to say something- go to Google Images inthe first place or whatever, and search for "Bogotá", so you can atleast make yourself a broad idea of what is like the place in whichyour gonna set your movie?. Then you'll realize that some little townin the desert of Baja California isn't the appropriate scenery torecreate the life of a city 2600 mts. above the sea level in the greenplateaus at the Andes of Colombia.PD: sorry for the broken English

Not THAT bad
We went to see this movie in the theater last week. After reading thereviews of some critics I didn't expect too much about this one. And tobe honest, if you leave the theater after the first pursuit (about 15minutes in the movie) you'd say the critics were totally right. Thedirecting of the action sequence was that terrible but after that itimproved a lot and the movie exceeded my expectations by far. Althoughthe story is very shallow, the character depth is detailed enough toimpersonate with the main characters. Although it's not the kind ofmovie that will stick for a long time but if you love vigilance movieswith a happy Hollywood end I can really recommend this movie.

Deteriorates as it Proceeds...
I watched Colombiana (2011) on a flight to LA. It was an enjoyablemovie with a simple storyline: a young girl loses her parents to a gangand grows up to avenge the death of her family. The movie helped passtime on the plane, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless theywere looking for a meaningless, shallow film with some action, rubbishplot, and a hot, chocolate chick in it.To summarize my problem with this movie, the outcome of the mainconflict is too obvious and unexciting, and the "love problem", per se,is pretty much left unresolved. (If the no-resolution aspect was meantto work as a cliffhanger, the attempt clearly failed; I wasn't leftwondering. In fact, I didn't even want to think about it.)When the movie was still running, things were interesting; there wereguns, explosions, family, a tough chick leading a double life, and alove interest. It was all good. But by the end of the movie, I was leftwordless, and not because I was wow-ed. They started off with aperfectly acceptable story and threw in a shabby ending that wasclearly not thought out. It was utterly disappointing.The movie doesn't deliver any meaning or message other than the cliché,"What goes around, comes around," or "Good conquers evil." The movieleaves no lasting impression; it is a thriller from beginning tomiddle, but fails to make an impact at the end.The movie is visually appealing and the story seems to have originatedfrom a nice concept, but the writer appears to have been in a hurry tofinish his/her script. Overall impression? Colombiana is a Hispanic,lesser version of Charlie's Angels, minus the Charlie and the other twoAngels.

Title says it all, cliché after cliché sums this movie up prettynicely. In the beginning of the movie where the 2 head gangsters arehaving a meeting, I said to myself, if one of them kills the other thenthis movie is going to be horrible. And what do you know, he does.Also this movie had people making so many stupid mistakes that someonein real life would never make. Also the very small details in moviesand pretty much everything in the world make all the difference. Firstoff, the plot is so empty and basic. I know, this is supposed to be anaction flick but comon. You are an assassin but yet you leave yourtrade mark all over the crime scene? Stupid.The director tried to make the main actress show raw emotion, butcompletely failed. She is a bad actress. I felt no sympathy or anythingfor her in the scenes where I was supposed to.Also, since when where there micro SD cards back in the 90's? A memorymodule of that size, even if it existed could only store like 100kilobytes of information. And also since when can you still read thecard after it's been inside your stomach for a couple of hours? BS.Bottom line, do NOT rent this movie even if its offered for a dollar.If you really want to see this movie wait til it shows up on TV like Idid, you will be SUPER glad you did.

Not your everyday action movie
It is interesting movie which has many characteristics of Luc Besson'sstyle. Hyper edgy, hyper violent and hyper intelligent. The action israw unsweetened and in your face.The similarities with Nikita are numerous - woman killer, fast,intelligent and unpredictable warrior in relationship with sweetunsuspecting guy.However the similarities end up here. Many tried unsuccessfully todouble the amazing performance of Anne Parillaud - the original Nikitayet the first time since there is a real match in the extremelybeautiful Zoe Zaldana. Zoe Zaldana is absolutely convincing asunstoppable deadly hunter yet out-pours wild eroticism in the process.Another high point is Amandla Stenberg who steals the show as the 10years old Catalea. Really amazing! I was disappointed to hear at theend the sweetened mainstream-aligned cover instead of the original NIN"Hurt". The original is edgier with unusual chord progression anddeeply disturbing Trent Reznor performance - it could underlineperfectly the story.

A vendetta machine trains to take revenge but the decision she takes might be just over the line....
This isn't any different from loads of films that are already there onthis theme. Kill bill being being the top class of it, but I never getbored of an assassin movie, they are just so cool. So this movie forthe fans of this genre wont disappoint and will give you exactly whatyou expect, lot of coolness, a vendetta machine who is a sexy female inthis case, a final unreal showdown and more but that might make themovie nothing more than just that. Hanna was a recent movie on similarbase, but i prefer this on overall to Hanna. Final verdict- this moviewont disappoint you if you are looking for action and stealth withvendetta to add..

Surprisingly good
This was a surprisingly good movie, given the loop holes in the story.It has a very basic story...but this movie is centered around herjourney, not the plot. Bad idea? Perhaps not. Entertaining? Mostdefinitely. I loved the camera work and cinematography. Her character was also verygood...just restrained by a "kind of bad" story.The camera work, searching tactics, and fighting styles are similar toBourne, Taken, and Transporter. The journey of how she goes about getting to the plot is certainlyentertaining.

How can people like this movie? The action wasnt even that good.
**Spoiler alert** (If you could call it that).I didn't expect this movie to be a very artistic and moving film atall, I expected it to be an action movie, possibly along the lines ofLeon or Taken. Sadly it was even a terrible action movie.The plot wasn't terrible, but only because there was almost no plot tobegin with. I would normally say spoiler alert, except I can't becausethe plot is already spoiled. The main character is a girl who's parentsget murdered and she goes to America and becomes an assassin. Weessentially have no understanding on why her parents were killed otherthan her parents were in a shady business with the antagonist, and ithas something to deal with information on disks that is somehowrelevant to the U.S. government or something. These points are about 30seconds of the movie in total. She obviously attempts to exact herrevenge a few years later yet the antagonist has protection from theCIA for some reason unexplained. She assassinates people and eventuallyis able to threaten enough people to find her parents killer. Meanwhileher love interest knows absolutely nothing about her, (she literallyjust appears at his apartment and they have never gone out on a date)and he's apparently in love with her. At least something like Taken hasa little plot; Liam Neeson's daughter is taken for slave trade and hemust go around chasing clues of corruption.Aside from the plot, or lack thereof this movie was still bad. We areleft so many times tilting our head to the side and thinking "Really??Really???!?" This includes almost the entire movie. Such things includeher not being seen while hanging from a maybe inch wide pole right onthe side of a building when the police look almost directly at her, toscenes where her uncle opens fire near a school district, police showup in 15 seconds, and police don't even come after him while he remainsjust standing there. This also includes a kill where she stabs someonewith the top of pistol into what appears to be the right clavicle(collarbone). I'm assuming it was supposed to be his neck, but itdefinitely didn't look like they even tried to make this lookrealistic. Oh, and it's impossible to leave out the body morphologicalsoftware which is able to match her photo (randomly, it wasn't eveninformation added to the casefile at all) to a very unconvincingsurveillance video. Please waste your time with another action movie.Go watch Die Hard again for the 1,000 time before you see this, you'llbe much happier.

Original Action Sequences and A New Action Hero
I'm glad some of the other reviewers on this site have acknowledgedthat Columbiana is a French film. Having the dialogue in English,pandering to the English speaking market does not detract from thefreshness of what is on the screen. Rather than a Hollywoodpaint-by-numbers exercise in boredom, we are given a wonderfullyempathetic lead character played by Zoe Saldana with completebelievability. Olivier Megaton directs the Luc Besson script with aneye to original twists to clichéd action sequences. I went in expectingless than what I got, and came out wanting to buy the DVD when it isreleased, hoping for a sequel. Far better than most American madesummer fare. Congrats to all.

Hot Chick with guns
If you have seen the trailer then you pretty much know what's coming. Ipersonally thought it was a pretty good flick and the action throughoutthe movie definitely keeps your interest.My only thought was that they should have gone ahead and pushed it toan "R" rated movie. With all the action and shooting, I believe therewas almost little to no blood. I know the issue with too much violenceand maybe they were trying to get a younger audience the ability to seethis movie but it was lacking the "pop" factor by whitewashing too manyscenes. Zoe Saldana did a superb job in this movie and I only wish thatsome of the supporting cast could have been on the same level that sheis on.IMHO

A Review of Colombiana from a Colombian
Colombiana stars Zoe Saldana as a girl from Bogota, Colombia whobecomes an assassin after witnessing her parents' murder. That's prettymuch it. There's really no more, no less. The plot is something you'veseen a million times before and the ending is pretty predictable. Thecharacters are not developed very much but that doesn't matter, muchlike my quibbles with the completely inaccurate shooting locations thatpose as Colombia at the beginning of the movie. This is an actionmovie, first and foremost and the movie moves quick enough not to wasteany chance at seeing a good action sequence. Saldana is good in therole and she does a good enough job anchoring the film. The rest can'tbe said about the rest of the movie. I can't to say it was bad. Butsome of the acting range was wildly uneven. Plus some of the film wasdownright laughable. One scene that really stood out to me was thescene where Saldana's character tells her uncle that she wants to be akiller. He tries to convince her to change her mind by taking out a gunand shooting a moving car in broad daylight! In front of other people!That scene alone should make it a eligible candidate to be included onthe podcast "How Did This Get Made". Now despite my reservations withthe lack of character development and the weak plot, I thought it waspretty entertaining trash. It's the type of movie where you leave yourbrain at the door and have a good time.

Good Action scenes makes it watchable !!!
Colombiana was a decent entertainer with stylish action sequences whichis watchable at least once. Cateleye runs for her life after herparents are killed by local mafia. She takes refuge at her father'sfriend and vows to avenge her parent's killings Columbiana is directedby oliver and produced by Luc Besson. Generally , Luc Besson's filmsare more of style and less of substance and this is no different.Director has taken a simple story of blood and revenge. The film startsoff well with few scenes but looses out the steam afterward. But thanksto the nice climax , the movie becomes watchable. Screenplay is loosealong with the story which we've seen so many times in previous flicks.Action scenes are well executed but some of them are not easy todigest. Zoe Saldana is effective in her role as Cateleye. Rest of thestar cast are just about OK Overall , an average flick with good oldaction parts. Watch it if you love stylish action movies. Average 2.5/5
