Great Movie!

This review is from: Cars 2 (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in DVD Packaging) (DVD) Once again Pixar scores with this sequel. Not as good as the first Cars but seldom sequels are. Great value for a 2 disc set (one Blue Ray) since we have held out on buying one. Thanks Amazon!

Highly and Thoroughly Disappointing

I have to say that I was completely disappointed by this movie. When Ifirst read about the plot two years ago, I didn't think that a racearound the world and having Larry the Mater Guy being mistaken for aninternational spy would work, but since it was being done by Pixar, andJohn Lasseter in particular, I'd give it a chance.Unfortunately, my intuition was right.First of all, I thought this movie was way too violent for a G rating(see the bathroom scene where the American agent car gets beaten up forexample). I suppose I should have thought twice when I saw a toy Larrythe Mater Guy truck with machine guns in my local grocery store.Secondly, why was Owen Wilson even given top billing for his role asLightning McQueen? He was a secondary character at best. The firstmovie was about relationships and finding what's important in life, andso on. This movie? Merchandising.Third, Larry the Mater Guy cannot carry a movie on his own (animated, pixellated or otherwise). His actions were funny for the first fiveminutes or so, but come on here. This whole "fish out of water" stuff(or, in this case, hayseed in the big city) wears thin quickly.Fourth, can we please get OFF the "big oil is bad" bandwagon, at leastfor kids movies? Aren't they being brainwashed enough? A kids movie issupposed to be a kids movie, plain and simple. Fun, lighthearted, andentertaining. Maybe even a song thrown in here and there. They don'tneed to be sent a message just yet. Let them be kids for crying outloud. Let them discover Michael Moore when they're in high school. The movie did have, however, a few redeeming qualities. As usual, Pixarcreates a highly detailed, richly defined, visually appealing world forboth the characters and audience. John Turturro hams it up as theItalian Formula-1 racer. Michael Caine never disappoints (Jaws 4notwithstanding).But all you need to know about this movie is what my five year old sondid when it was over. He is, presumably, in the target audience for a Grated film, and is a huge fan of the first movie. When the movie wasover, he stood up and (literally) yelled, "I don't like this movie!"Enough said.

Better than the first

My nine year old son liked Cars 2 a lot and me and my wife too.The special effects are really phenomenal. I was very surprised howrealistic all the sceneries were built up. Congratuilations to all thestaff for all these fireworks. Then the story was packed with some goodspy elements à la James Bond. The fly scenes were well executed too andthere was more action than in the first Car. It offers also a greattour in Europe nicest countries as in Paris, Rome, Riviera, London andin Tokio.I think this is the plan how all the coming animation movies should bemade. Suspense and in the same time very near plot to the reality couldlike children and adults. Just take the examples Ice Age or Rio.Final vote: 9/10

Best rated G movie Ive ever seen.

Great movie! But there is some violence. I don't know how it got rated G. Should have been PG. Just make sure that whoever is watching it is at least 5 or 6.

Pixars first disappointment

As time has passed, Pixar has proved us to go one step ahead from otheranimated production companies, by being our number one choice on thecategory of "Best Animated Film" at the Oscars, by always giving usmore than the expected, (Just like they did with "Wall-e" and "Up!") orby managing into getting animated movies to get an Oscar nomination for"Best Picture". They never settled with an OK-job, they always aimedfor excellence. However in Cars 2 they didn't prove it so. I can'tcomplain about the excellent visual effects and the majestic settings, but the script just didn't prove to be Pixar material. It was a riskymove taking a supporting character and giving it a leading role, whichdidn't work as well as I expected. I'm not saying the movie sucked, Ijust think they could have done a better job, and it was Pixar's worstmovie yet. (Not bad, but still the worst).I think, among their other fascinating animated pictures, they couldhave made a sequel that created more expectation on the audience like"Monsters, Inc." or "The Incredibles".I also understand they abandoned a project named "Newt" because ofbudget trouble, to focus in producing the sequels "Toy Story 3" and"Cars 2". In the case of "Toy Story 3" I completely understand, but inthe case "Cars 2" I think it was a stupid decision. However I won'tlower my Pixar expectations. I expect them to give us what we want intheir next film, "Brave", and to continue making excellent jobs in thefuture. I'll take "Cars 2" to be a simple mistake on their career.Sorry Pixar, only one thumb up for this one.

Give it a chance.

My son is 2 1/2 years old and loved both Cars and Cars 2. The naysayers, while entitled to their opinions, should probably have gone to the movies with a more light-hearted attitude. While my son did get up halfway through for a potty break, he thoroughly enjoyed this movie to the point that he has seen it four times. Granted, I would not have paid for him to see it four times, as I had movie passes from Toys 'R Us, but I definitely would have paid to take him more than once. I agree with some of the warnings -- the crushing or exploding of some "good guys" and the lack of character development (I would have liked to know a little more about the other race cars that every toy store is selling in abundance). I do not agree, however, with those individuals who said it was boring or a flop. It is a spoof of Bond movies, with a perspective that kids can enjoy. I would recommend giving it a chance, especially if you have a child that loves all Disney films like my child.

No heart in this one.

I'm not even a kid, but I was looking forward to a follow up to this Pixar classic. From the beginning of the movie, it is a very different tone overall compared to what the first movie was about. In the first movie, it had a lot of great values, a lot of heart and soul all while being an entertaining ride. In this one, it's all about action and corny jokes, creating a very different tone compared to the last movie. It starts off introducing a James Bond like atmosphere where the spy car, voiced by Michael Cain gets busted spying on a group of "bad-guys" and an action filled chase follows with thrills and explosions; then the plot of the film kicks in where a guy, or I should say, a car, invents some new fuel source and creates a race challenge where he invites all of the different styles of racing champions from around the world to compete in it, all while the spys and bad-guys are up to something behind the scenes. This movie features Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), but more of the focus seems to be around Mator (Larry The Cable Guy) who returns as a bumbling goof and gets himself mixed up in some spy business. I won't ruin the plot, so I will leave it at that, but I will guarantee you, you are not going to find someone who can honestly say this movie is better, as good, or comes close to being as good as the first one. Why? It's just so different to the first, it has no heart, no soul, no morel and just relies on a few sight gags rather then make you feel you just saw something special, instead you just feel like they crammed together any old thing for a quick buck.Don't get me wrong, it's not a TERRIBLE movie, but I would recommend hiring or d/l it. to purchase a copy, I know I would feel ripped off that I just bought a 20 to 30 buck coffee coaster I will never have a use for after seeing it once.

Pixar continues its slow descent

I was so looking forward to Cars 2. The action and the animation arevery exciting and eye catching. However, the story was lacking. It didnot have the magic of the first one. More importantly, Pixar had toslide a politically correct, liberal, environmentalist theme in it withthe 'alternative fuel' topic. I am so sick and tired of the hoax thatis 'global warming', hearing about 'go green' and how gas / oil is thegreat evil. I didn't need two hours of that garbage shoved down mythroat. If that agenda had been left out of the movie, it would havebeen much more enjoyable. It was good to see the characters again. There will be plenty of ideas for the diecast Cars characterscollectors (which I am one). However, the 2nd movie just does notmeasure up to the first one. The music soundtrack of the first oneblows this one away. There were very few songs in this one. Go see itjust because it has been 5 years of waiting. Just don't get your hopestoo high.

Cars 1 is better

This review is from: Cars 2 [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) 4 Stars for the Movie:Cars 2 is still pretty entertaining, but I couldn't help feeling that it seemed to be a DreamWorks movie marked with a Pixar logo. Dreamworks movies are also great imo, but they have a very different feel than Pixar's movies. This movie feels that it's more about action and a lot less about story and character development, which makes sense since Cars 2 is a spy movie. (Then again The Incredibles had a ton of action AND the typical Pixar story & character development.) I'm sure kids will enjoy it the same as other Pixar movies, but I don't feel it's as engaging to adults.3 Stars for the Stream Rental:Since this is also a review of the online movie stream rental, I have to note that I was pretty annoyed that the movie still had a letter box even though I have a full 1080P HD 16:9 TV. That makes very little sense. I used a Roku to stream this movie, and plenty of other movies from Amazon and Netflix. This is the only movie that had a letterbox, and I actually paid for it.

Another Pixar success.

Firstly lets all try to ignore the band wagon jumpers, shills for largecompanies and the paid to be haters this is an amazing movie. It tackles some adult issues and does so with style and aplomb, thereis a strong spy story vibe running through the film and it makes forquite an exciting action movie. All the people asking for a sequel for The Incredibles here it is, it'sjust called Cars 2.Pixar are clever people, they know fools love to flock to hate sothey've made a sequel to one of there most favourite stories and set itin the Cars universe, this reveals the fools from the dudes, anyonebemoaning this film as rubbish is an idiot, sure they deserve thereopinions but there opinions are wrong. 8)Ordinary people love to crow about perceived "failures" they also tendto be they type of fools to judge a movies success on it's bank, thistells you all you need to know about there love of cinema and how theysee success, like a banker or businessman, and whilst that's great ifthat is your job as a movie lover it sets you apart if your favouritepart of a film is it's box office.Ignore the drones, fools, haters, people who don't know better and thekiddy wanna bee's, this is a great movie from any studio, it being fromPixar just makes it even cooler.Start your engines.

The First Worst Movie Pixar Has Ever Brought In

Up until now, Pixar could do no wrong. Hopefully, this will be both thefirst and last time with "Cars 2." Pixar has so far been the bestanimated studio for the last 15 years or so, and has never delivered abad movie even once. They don't resort to pop culture references andstar egos like Dreamworks has around the same time. But then, evenPixar hasn't been intact with "Cars 2." With this movie, the studio iscondescending to the level of Dreamworks also with pop culture and staregos, not to mention a confusing storyline that can baffle the youngones. Still no matter how bad the reviews, and I'm agreeing withthem, the movie will rake in business like any other animated movie fromthe 1990s on.What is wrong with this movie? Where can I begin? Well, first of all,the story borrows and rips off the James Bond movies during the SeanConnery era. Although Michael Caine has never been James Bond, he issure suave and reliable enough to play any British spy, animated orlive action. He definitely is the perfect fit as the British secretagent car Finn McMissile. His part is good enough, but he doesn't seemto intertwine with two of the original "Cars," the hero LightningMcQueen (Owen Wilson) or the redneck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), whonow upstages McQueen as the hero. Mater has the role as an unwittingagent and is foil to Finn McMissile and his sleek female assistantHolley Shiftwell (The British actress Emily Mortimer), and even fallsfor her at the end of the movie. Still nothing of interest. Second, the story is way too confusing. It's all about greed of the oilsupply. The villain is Sir Miles Axelrod (Eddie Izzard), who wants toreplace all of the gas oil with synthetic oils so cars can use it in aWorld Grand Prix in Tokyo, Paris, Monte Carlo, and London. There areeven offensive jokes about the Italian mafia, something never done inPixar before, and Pixar usually has kind, sensitive humor. Mater, FinnMcMissile, and Holley Shiftwell join forces to thwart this dastardlyattempt and restore the oil to its normalcy, while Lightning McQueenraces against a new Italian Rival Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro).Third and most important of all, it is rated G, and with all thefrightening gunplay and violence, and literal bathroom humor, it shouldbe rated PG. Some people would suggest it should be PG-13. Back in theday, there were numerous G-rated cartoons that should have been ratedPG, and PG-rated cartoons that should be rated R. "Cars 2" is noexception to the inaccurate ratings of animated movies. The only good things about the movie are the colorful artwork, especially in the Tokyo sequences, and the addition of other charactersbesides cars, such as submarines and a smiling plane named Siddeley,McMissile's espionage partner.I'm so glad I didn't bring any small children to this movie. There wereno laughs in the audiences and the children came out of there askingtheir parents, "What's it all about?" Original characters come back insmaller cameos, but their scenes really had no place in the movie. Theactor doing Fillmore did a lame imitation of George Carlin, who diedthree years ago. Luckily, Doc Hudson, played by the late great PaulNewman, wasn't replaced, he had a small tribute. If "Cars 2" had thesame type of endearing storyline like let's say, "Toy Story 2," or "ToyStory 3," adults would have been fine with it. But no, it had to belike any routine animated movie from other studios. Hopefully, Pixar inthe future will go back to it's usual style again because there is anadult audience for animation.

Cars 2 (2011) - Racing Up the Competition! The Secret Spy Way!

Lightning McQueen and Mater return for another round of fun and thrillswith "Cars 2". The movie follows McQueen racing the world grand prix, while Mater signs as a secret spy. Okay, first off, on the positiveside, the movie was quite exciting and thrilling, and it was funwatching Mater make the audience laugh, while McQueen makes his famous"ka-chow" on the track. The characters were enjoying, and the amazingsights and sounds were impressive, and the spy story was kind ofinteresting. I also loved all the new characters, from Finn McMissile,to the Italian car Franchesco. But on mixed thoughts, although enjoyingthe spy story, it made the movie feel more like another James Bondmovie, instead of a Cars sequel, and it lost track of the movie'spotential. And it lost complete focus on the movie's true heart offriendship and loyalty. But I didn't mind on the mishap just one bit.But also, this movie didn't really deserve the G-rating, because of allthe cartoon violence, and all the humor of killing cars. But I stilllike the movie the way it is. Well, I thought the movie was prettygreat, and had its way of entertainment, and this sequel neverdisappoints. Looks like the first "Cars" movie just brought a biggerand better piece of Pixar entertainment with their very own sequel."Cars 2", in my review, "impressively entertaining, and has itsmoments".

Nice, Great if you loved cars 1 and you like real cars in general

There has been a lot of negative reviews for the movie, sure it is notas charming as the 1st one. But I personally think you should nevercompare sequels to the earlier movies. Sure they have the samecharacters and are in some ways continuations, but for the most of itthey are different movies. If you love real cars then this movie isjust super. It's cleverly funny e.g. The car Lewis Hamilton has a gapin his teeth just like the real Lewis. Besides these small smilemoments there are of course funny dialogs. Watch it! its fun. And thewhole spy element is quite refreshing in a Pixar movie. It may ofcourse make you want to go and see a Bond flick.

The Vidiot Reviews...

Cars 2Great, now that cars can talk, we're going to need to draft up anotherdistracted driver bylaw.Wait a minute! There are no humans in this animated movie to enforcesuch an edict.Returning home after a long stint on the racing circuit, LightningMcQueen (Owen Wilson) gets reacquainted with his dim-witted tow-truckfriend, Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). But their reunion is short-lived, seeing as Lightning's been invited tothe World Grand Prix.Fortunately, he can bring a guest. Unfortunately, it's Mater, whoinadvertently becomes embroiled with two spies (Michael Caine, EmilyMortimer) trying to thwart a power move by history's worst sellingcars. When it comes to the animation, all of the Pixar earmarks are present. But when it comes to the Mater-centric story, and espionage sub-plot,Cars 2 gets lost.Besides, who wants to watch a movie where the cars all have better jobsthan you do? OK............. But disappointing

Having been a long time Pixar fan, I can say that this is a bigdeparture from other "classics". There is some charm, but for the mostpart the movie is much more violent and complicated than any otherPixar film I can think of. My father in law struggled to follow thestory - and it's convoluted enough it's hard to articulately explain.Whereas Cars had a classy charm to it and a memorable soundtrack, thislacked a likable story and any music that was the least bitinteresting. I can't believe that Cars 2 actually came out of the samestudio. It's not terrible, but you shouldn't see this movie expectingany of the "magic" and innovation that Cars had. This movie is allexplosions and drama.

Somethings Missing

The saddest thing about Pixar today is, they don't know what movie theyare going to release on their 25th Anniversary since one of theirupcoming projects "Newt" was cancelled despite from Blue Sky's Rioplot. Cars 2 feels like it's a direct-to-DVD film. It's not really badbut it's just unnecessary. Though, the action is pretty cool. The kidswill enjoy it but the rest is like Rango. Instead of Western Themes,it's Spy movies. The story isn't bad except it doesn't give anythingemotional and heartwarming unlike the other Pixar movies. Cars 2 ispretty fun but the most important ingredient of their movies ismissing.Firstly, the lead of the film is Mater. The theme of the film isEspionage but it's just some sort of an animated version of aparticular spy movie. Everything moves here. There are too many actionthat any kid can enjoy but the story is probably too interesting forgrown ups. If the movie gets focused to the plot, the kids might getbored. The missing Pixar element here is the heartwarming moments. Themovie still has a heart but it fails to be compelling. Don't worryabout the humor, that is one thing they will never fail. Some of thewriting seems rushed. The voices do what they do best. John Lasseter knows what to do in thismovie. The animation is obviously pretty good. The score is a bitgeneric that you may hear in any movie or television show. The actionkeeps everything moving. Watching the car fighting scenes is likewatching a kid playing his little toy cars and let them do somethingfun. Which is pretty impressive. In Pixar, the craftsmanship or the animation doesn't quite matter. It'sall about the compelling story and the emotional heartwarming moments. It's hard to say Cars 2 is bad film. Pixar still knows how to make agood movie but without their important elements, it's like you'rewatching a movie from a different studio. Once again, it's pretty funbut if you expect a lot of Pixar magic then you might get disappointed.

Where is... everything that has defined Cars 1??!!

The music, the heart, the subtlety, the charm, the little humor, the details... everything that has brought Cars 1 into our hearts is unfortunately missing in this action-packed movie.

Surprisingly better than the original

I didn't like Cars. There, I said it. Go ahead and throw your tomatoesat me. So I didn't go see Cars 2 in theaters because I didn't think Iwould like it either. But then I finally decided, once it was releasedon DVD, to give it a try. Now, I don't regret not seeing it in theaters because I wouldn't put iton my list of favorite Pixar movies. But I liked it much better thanCars. Now I will admit, The Incredibles is my favorite Pixar movie andit's pretty violent (but by action movie standards, it's relativelytame). But I actually thought Cars 2 was more violent and I was prettysurprised at the death toll. In fact, I'd have given it a PG rating aswell. But while Cars didn't make me laugh at all, Cars 2 made me laugha few times. Mater definitely held the movie together while McQueenwho, in my opinion, is the more boring character is just supporting.Actually, I guess what I'm saying is that if you didn't like Cars, you'll probably like Cars 2. And I find it kind of funny that thepercentage of critics who gave Cars 2 a bad rating is almost equal tothe percentage of critics who gave Cars a good one. Coincidence?Probably. But I think that if Cars didn't do anything for you, Cars 2just might.

Cars 2

Lightening McQueen (voice by Owen Wilson) and Tow Mater (voice by Larrythe Cable Guy) take it overseas to compete in the very first WorldGrand Prix to see who is the world's fastest car. Unfortunately, theroad is filled with an overwhelming number of bumps in the road, detours and unthinkable surprises especially when Mater becomesinvolved in his own "wild" adventure. The excitement takes on a newlevel when Mater finds himself torn between helping his "best pal"Lightening McQueen win the high-profile race and assisting in a top-secret mission orchestrated by Finn McMissile, a British super spy(voice by Michael Caine) and the attractive spy-in-training HolleyShiftwell. The images of the cities visited are amazing as is McQueen's incrediblyfast sprawling races. "Will your kids enjoy the movie and have fun?"Absolutely, however the theme, catch-lines and content is moreappropriate and understood by adults. In the end, the uplifting message that you'll take from this movie is"Be Yourself"Ranking = (7.5/5)
