Thumbs up my brotherend!

I'd admit it, I had watched it a bit late, but this is by the far, nextto Tower Heist in recent movies, as the better ones of cinema now. Thisis a pinnacle of the right medium thrown across the face of theexpected general bland that is Hollywood entertainment at this point;where the biggest movie stars perform in mediocre films, and everythingseems to be contemporary, stupid or depressing. But once in a while, someone a director or and actor or a writer comes a long, to reinstateat least some hope back in all that bland unoriginal theme, and in theright way. Captain America was a homage to the comic series, it wasgreat, it had plenty of actions and even though it kept that relevantlytypical marvel comic build like that of Spiderman where somethingextraordinary happens, it was made in the most rationalized means, andfitted into a nice framework of creativity and originality. That's theword - originality and ingenuity, - you don't get that often inHollywood now- a-days, and this really slapped it on like well riddenmaterial. A true homage, and even though my "fellow" viewers found it abit "unrealistic" and the humor "obvious/offbeat comic-relief" theydon't know what the movie competitors are, to truly know how much othermovies now a days are off beat in humor and "weird", my fellow viewersare insane, and don't know what they're talking about. There were noboring bits, and it was funny and quirky all the way. And most of allit was GENUINE, - weirdness and offbeat humor are made splendid whenlike in the movie where the main character learns from the scientistthat value of strength is what's important, - this movie shows how thevalue of the genuine is important, and that can triumph over occasionalunrealistic marvel aspects and offbeat humour (if any) any time of anyday in this current movie industry.

All American hero left with a flimsy plot line backbone!

Out of all the comic book films to be released captain America isdefinitely not the worst. The first twenty minutes of the film when theviewer is getting to know the man who would later become captainAmerica we see the potential of what might of become one of the summersbiggest and best hits. what happens instead is that the polishedmuscles of the captains must have blinded the writers as to the rest ofthe plot. The plot line is extremely weak and the action becomeextremely repetitive because how many ways are there to hit a man witha shield but that isn't even the worst part. The main problem is whathas effected all of the marvel films that have been release and that isthat there is no where near enough development around the bad guy andit lets down the whole film because you as the viewer just don't carewhat happens to ether of them by the end. The marvel film studio got itso write with Iron man but since then there has been let down after letdown. so go and see captain America if you want some extremely mindlessaction then go for it I think personally i'll just wait for the Darkknight rises.

oh good grief.......this is a popcorn movie.

Oh good grief. Some people just can't have fun. I take that back...somepeople have fun by nitpicking a movie to death. Was this movie slow attimes? Yes. Did it always make sense? No.Was it fun to watch? Most of the time. This is a popcorn movie. Anexpensive pulp fiction movie. It is a big budget Grandson of the actionserials from the 40's and 50s. Go watch it for fun. Don't over analyzethe thing for crying out loud. The only part of the movie that made me cringe was a 5 min portionwhich almost turned into a Busby Berkley musical. If I had been theeditor, that was the part I would have cut out. Other wise...I lookforward to a sequel.

Film Debate re Captain America

FILM DEBATE filmdebate.wordpress.com THE PROFESSIONAL: So... let's get to it. What are your initialreactions to Captain America, the latest "Marvel Comics" movie? THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE: There is nothing new or interesting about it.You have your pre-hero weakling, gets powers, post-hero using powers, build up to the fight with the big bad guy, and the end. It coverseverything with just a cursory glance. The action sequences are onegiant cut scene, and then the final showdown. And wakka, wakka, he's inthe future with Samuel L Jackson! COMING SOON, The Avengers. It feelsmore like homework before the Avengers movie so you know where he camefrom. Also, come ON. He crashes in the Arctic and he goes into hibernation?LAME.THE PROFESSIONAL: I understand the criticism about seeming likehomework for the Avengers, but I think it is possible to view and enjoythese Marvel-Interconnected-Universe movies as just that, episodiccomic book films, instead of stand alone features. With comics you have multiple writers and illustrators contributing tocharacters shared in the same "universe." The benefit of making movieversions of these stories is that they have to be accessible enough tomake money from a mainstream audience and they can't have theridiculous convolution that comic books develop. Obviously all comicbook movies look terrible compared to the Dark Knight, but perhapsthese Marvel films can be thought of as something else entirely...their own genre, certainly, but almost bordering on their own medium. And he could survive being frozen because of the Super Soldier Serum!THE FUGITIVE: The last scene with SLJ was thirty seconds long, comparedto a whole movie full of awesome deco-styled mega-planes, trains,and...cars; retro-futurism was hitting on all its diesel poweredcylinders. Nazis are the ultimate movie evil, why not make them evenmore, complete with super flame-throwing and dual evaporator-guncarrying nastiness. And really, you just cannot go wrong with a crazedmutated arch Nazi nemesis.Note: I watched it in 3D, and I admittedly flinched at one point asCaptain American threw his shield and it bounced back towards thescreen. Darn, they got me! THE PROFESSIONAL: Interesting how none of the main German characterswere actually played by German actors... nor did they speak German toeach other in the privacy of their own company... it made me want to gohome and watch Inglourious Basterds.I tell you, I can imagine being a Marvel comics geek or 10-year-old boyand loving this movie. They had lots of fanboy service with Dr. Zola,Bucky in very pre-Winter Soldier form, Dumb Dumb Dugan (I can't believeI just wrote that...) and so forth. For the kiddos, they had punches, explosions and one-liners. Ultimately, I have never thought highly ofJoe Johnston as a director. He is like the (very) poor man's Spielberg. His films are very workmanlike and without any flair.I can't say I experienced any dramatic tension for the majority of thefilm, except perhaps the tension of not wanting to be embarrassed by aphony looking visual effects sequence. I did think the War BondsPropaganda montage was a nice touch, as well as the (SPOILER ALERT!)"death" of Cap's close friend.Compared to other Marvel Comics movies, I can say that Captain Americahad big set pieces and a high stakes plot. World domination! Imminentdestruction to major cities! Compare this to Iron Man, where the grandfinale was a mediocre fight in a... parking lot. Or to The IncredibleHulk where the final battle of two mutated guys punching each otherhappened on some random rooftop. Or even Thor, where the hero easilybested an oversize toaster-headed robot in some deserted New Mexicoshantytown.continued at... filmdebate.wordpress.com

CAPTAIN America! made in England

I only went to see this US propaganda pantomime because I watched someof it being filmed in Liverpool England, and although watching it beingmade was a long drawn out and painful process I didn't realise watchingthe finished movie would be a far worse experience! Im really going tokeep this short and to the point (which is what the films productionteam should have considered doing) The film starts slowly picks upabout a third of the way through and then coughs and falls over! Theaction scenes are poor and not what you would expect if you have everread the comic book, however the acting isn't bad but then quite anumber of the cast are British playing Americans. The whole thing would have been much better as a computer animatedmovie with plenty of tongue in cheek humour thrown in! If there is asequel I hope they don't make it in Liverpool again as I could dowithout that dock road being closed for another two weeks as I have todrive home from work down there! also I would rather lose a limb thanhave to watch anymore of this tripe!

Captain America? More like Captain Boring.

After reading a bunch of glowing reviews when the movie came out, Ifinally rented it and I have to say I was disappointed. I found themovie to be little more than a by-the-numbers comic book action movie.*SPOILERS BELOW* Now, I am not familiar with the original CaptainAmerica, so I don't know how it compares to that. However, the premiseof the movie - a patriotic super hero who must defeat a Cobra-like evilNazi organization based on super science - is one that should appeal tome. I mean, think of the possibilities! Unfortunately, it seemsapparent to me that the movie never considered the possibilities andinstead chose to make CA into an amalgamation of every super hero tropeset against a paper thin WWII backdrop.Captain America himself is little more than a copy of Spiderman's PeterParker - a wimpy kid who is gifted with super hero powers...andproceeds to brood over his new found abilities for most of the film. Then, of course, you have his (doomed) mentor and his (doomed) friend, both there to provide motivation-by-death at key moments. Hugo Weavingplays the part of your ridiculous and paper thin villain whosemotivation is never developed beyond the "he is crazy" approach. AndTommy Lee Jones reprises his increasingly tiresome role of the folksysheriff/soldier/authority figure.Even more disappointing than the lack of deep and originalcharacterizations were the incredibly boring action sequences. Based onthis movie, CA was nothing more than a brute who would win battles bybanging people on the head with his shield. Really? Not exactly what Ihad in mind. I mean, how many times can you watch CA charge into a messof Cobr...er, Hydra thugs and start beating them up with as muchfinesse as Hulk Hogan? I actually found myself looking at my watchevery time a fight sequence would break out because they were allthoroughly uninteresting and on par with those found in the awfulBatman TV series. However, I think the greatest tragedy of CA is how WWII is neverportrayed with any depth; really, it is little more than a convenientbackdrop. When I saw some of the (unimaginative but) interesting Hydraweaponry, such as the mammoth Leman Russ tank at the beginning of themovie, I immediately started imagining all sorts of alternative WWIIbattles along the lines of DUST. I mean, how would the Battle of theBulge changed if the Wehrmacht fielded a bunch of laser-armed LemanRuss tanks?!? Unfortunately, the movie never bothers to explore any ofthis as while we get to see huge stockpiles of advanced weaponry, themovie is content to use a dozen guys with silly looking laser riflesand flamethrower units, and the occasional laser-armed APC, none ofwhich impacts the events of WWII in the least. Even when Red Skull"goes rogue" and uses his weaponry in open revolt against Hitler, thereare no historical implications. It's as if the events of this film takeplace in a bubble that the rest of the world found thoroughlyirrelevant and uninteresting. Wait a minute...they may be right.I really wanted to like this movie, but its approach is so amateurishlybanal that I found myself hating it with each passing moment. And don'teven get me started on its unsatisfying conclusion that seemed to bewritten before the rest of the movie for franchise reasons. In the end, nothing is really explained or resolved, which is the final lazy insultfor me.All in all, CA is little more than yet another missed opportunity byHollywood. Captain America? More like Captain Boring.

Nothing special but at least it is an entertaining romp without too much Avengers baggage

I'm starting to go off the endless churn of superhero movies that keepcoming out – they tend not to differ from the others and I dislike theway that all of the Marvel ones currently have the unnecessary weightof linking to next year's Avengers movie, tending to make themcluttered. Having heard Thor called one of the better ones, and thennot really caring for it, I didn't hold out much hope for CaptainAmerica being much cop. I was curious to see it though because Ifigured they couldn't make it as bad as the cheap and nasty one from1990.The film does what they all do which is to step back to the originsstory and go from there; this is often a good device and it works wellhere to, allowing the viewer to get in with the characters while alsoproviding a solid storyline for the majority. Although I know that theRed Skull is a key villain within the Captain America story, I'm notsure if I would have rather seen him kept back for a separate film andmaybe only alluded to here. He does provide a solid thread for thesecond half of the film but it did feel a little rushed and I thoughtthe conflict between the two of them lacked a real edge or personalinvestment – he was just the "baddie" and thus has to fight the"goodie", more could have been done with the aspect of them being"related" in terms of the creative process to add some teeth to them –but it wasn't.It does still work though, mainly because, unlike Thor, the filmremembers that while it may want to pave the way for anotherblockbuster, its primary function is to entertain. I found it quitefun, it never seemed overly heavy and while it did try and stay awayfrom the pantomime nature of its hero, it didn't try and force a lot ofdarkness onto it. It is daft and it doesn't have much in the way ofsubstance but the effects are pretty good and I never really tired ofit in the way I did with Thor. The film also benefits from the time itis set in as well as I liked the period touches and generally theadvanced weapons were given a nicely dated feel to them (although someof the bigger laser cannons did look a bit silly in my opinion). The cast do a solid job with what little there is to work with. Evansis a solid lead and is likable enough – he keeps the heart of hischaracter which is important and even when "super" he never comes overlike he is indestructible. Atwell works well with him and is easy onthe eye while Jones shows that even when he phones it in, he is still astrong screen presence. Weaving as always is a good presence and hereis no exception even though every time he spoke I thought of WengerHerzog; he is a good presence though and again this was part of thereason I was sad to see his character only be part of the film and notmade more of. Support is solid from Cooper, Tucci, Luke and many otherfamiliar faces.Overall Captain America is not a good enough film to make me overcomemy general apathy towards the endless parade of these Marvel superheromovies (we have years of these characters planned to come) but it wasat least one of the ones that I enjoyed. The "Avengers" clutter ismostly kept to the side and the solid origins story makes for acheerful and entertaining romp. Not brilliant by any means but I didenjoy it for what it was – which doesn't sound like much but too ofteneven that is a bar that some of these films aren't able to reach.

Very enjoyable

This summer of 2011 has certainly been a summer for super-hero movies, with the one I have been least looking forward to coming last. And, ifnot the best, it is as good as the best. In fact, my only realreservation derives from the fact that Captain America has never been acharacter which does very much for me (and, even after the movie, whichI enjoyed immensely, he still doesn't).The story is familiar to comic fans - weedy Steve Rogers is transformedby a super serum into enhanced Captain America, who pursues super-Nazithe Red Skull.I very much liked the period setting, which gave this film a feel whichis quite different to the other super-hero movies (even the 60s-basedX-Men: First Class felt fairly contemporary), and all the principalsgave excellent performances.. The action and effects all worked well(particularly the transformation of Chris Evans into the scrawnypre-serum Steve Rogers), and I suspect that there were lots of nicetouches which meant a lot to those more familiar with the comicsmythology of Cap than I am (I got a flavour from time to time thatothers might know who so-and-so was, but I didn't).As well as the big picture, there were lots of small touches I liked -the early incarnations of the shield, the use of the first comicscostume, the establishment of Steve Rogers as a bona fide hero evenwhen he was a skinny weed, for instance. But the thing I liked mostabout this film (and, to some extent, it contrasts with many othersuper-hero movies) is the fact that much of what happened in this filmreally mattered, both on a big scale and also on a more intimate level.Joe Johnston did a very good job in making every element of this filmwork together.I am looking forward to seeing the The Avengers next year, and I hopeJoss Whedon does as good a job as Johnston.

Exceptional Adventure Film

The summer sure got off on the right foot. Thor was fabulous. Then,X-Men First Class kept the momentum by pumping grand life in to theX-Men franchise. Now, after weathering that Green poopstorm in midJune, we get another exceptional hero film. Director Joe Johnson, thecast, the crew, the FX people and writers should all be proud of thisexceptional movie and take a bow. The only remotely negative thing Ihave to say about this movie is that I want more and I want it now! It's a good thing I don't have to wait long to see them all again inAvengers! So, saying Captain America is the best movie that I've seen this yearsays a lot. It's amazing to see it with a rockin' crowd in a packedcinema! I know many movies claim to have something for everyone butthis one manages to pull it off while remaining interesting andcompelling all the way through. There are spectacular action scenes aswell as heartfelt, intense moments. There is humor and fun but it's aserious, well made film. Not to sound like a poster ad but I can'timagine anyone at any age not enjoying this movie. (PS- the train sceneis as much fun as the train scene in Spider-Man 2!)

No surprise, no disappointment

I watched this flick, because I want to see all the prequels to thehighly anticipated "The Avengers"-film and I suspect that's why mostpeople will have the same motivation to see this movie.Story was familiar, since they used the exact same formula as in allthe other Stan Lee superhero movies. To be honest it is starting tobecome boring and I hope Captain America is next to the first Avengeralso the last Avenger.Hugo Weaving absolutely stole the show with his Arnold Schwarzneggeraccent and he basically carried the whole film on his back. It wasgreat fun to see him perform the evil governator super-villain and Iwish there was more footage shown of him.The rest of the movie is just sad. Of course they have to pick WorldWar 2 as the war where Captain America fought, since every one knowsall the recent wars were just fought to obtain oilfields for thecorporate world (how noble is that? indeed...). And the rest of thefilm is just a load of American chauvinism and propaganda with a fewentertaining jokes in it. 6/10

Save your money!

After seeing the previews I was optimistic about this new film, andthrough the first 40 minutes was satisfied that it would be a goodmovie. From there the movie goes strait down hill. I was lookingforward to a good Nazi ass kicking but all the fight scenes were cornyand dull. The Darth Vader looking Nazis stumbled around and fired theirlaser guns a few times and ended up fighting him bare handed one at atime. The acting left much to be desired and most of Captain America'sdialog consisted of dumb quotes. The main villain looked like somethingfrom a GI Joe movie and after the first hour I couldn't wait for themovie to be over. Save your $8.50 for a better movie and if you mustsee it wait a few months until it's in the $5 bin at the store.

Everything The Green Lantern shouldve been! Its a Surprise HIT!

I wasn't expecting this to be good but it actually was pretty good.OK so this summer has had its up and downs, we all saw some surprisesin good and bad, but who knows what Hollywood has more to come?"Facts of The Green Lantern" OK so we all waited to see The GreenLantern and it...didn't do so well...at all, i wasn't really shockedabout the movie, why because i saw in the trailer that it was gonnabite but i didn't expect the Green Lantern to be that bad, and it wasand is now being the buzz for razzie history in my book. Why, The Storyof the Green Lantern was so shallow, and the acting was horrible, theGreen Lantern in other words sucked.!don't believe me? look up MarkMiller, don't know him? He's the creator of"Wanted,Civil War and theKick ASS comics" he called it the"Worst Superhero ever made"."Review of Captain America:The First Avenger" But Captain AmericaDelivered such a good experience and taking that this film was made byJoe Johnston? really it was made by him, that brought an even biggersurprise to me, why because he's known for not only bringing theJurassic Park Franchise down with his entry of an original part 3 butturned out to be a flop, and then he tried to remake "The Wolfman" wellhe had something going, but as it got into story there was so manystops and pauses of what? and OK, then eh but he did a little bitbetter, now out of all his films he's still very well know for OctoberSky is his best film out of his Direction career. So Chis Evens as Captian America, he probably did a breakthroughperformance!Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, as known for doing Megatron he did a megagood job!The Story is good, it better than The Green Lantern for miles Everything good in a movie is in here. Good Performances, Good Story,Good Direction, Good Everything. Its one of the coolest surprises of summer!

Im not kissing you.....

So finally after three years of movies, the final Avenger moviearrives. And i'm really upset to say, it's the blandest and dullest ofthe lot.Steve Rogers is a an unfortunate man with many disabilities, but when afriendly Schnapps drinking Tucci considers him in a super soldierexperiment, he has the chance to help against the 'bullies' in theworld, much to 'grizzly' Tommy Lee Jones disdain. He becomes Captain America, a super soldier who can run really fast andwhom is great at Frisbee. The only problem is, Mr Smith from the Matrixhas been in the sun too long and decides to reference Thor and raidersof the Lost Ark in a very evil way.But ol' Cap isn't bothered, because he has Iron Mans dad to help himand to assist with Avengers continuity.I really wanted to like this film. I thought Johnston was the idealdirector, seeing the work he did with the very nostalgic Rocketeer, andhe can handle action well, like he did with Jutassic Park 3. But then Iremembered the boring Hidalgo, The Wolfman, and Jumanji, and alarmbells began to ring. The first act is fantastic, seeing Rogers as the weakling he is and hisstruggles with coming to terms with it, is a joy to watch, and Tucci isnothing short of excellent in his small role. But then, as Rogers transforms, so does the movie. It's not the actorsfaults, Evans has never been better, and Jones can do this role in hissleep, Weaving seems to have fun. But, even though the titular hero is the nicest guy in the world, ouldn't a few amusing moments been inserted in Cap's mission, or heavenforbid, a few one liners like Thor had? It appears not, this goes forserious in the most deathly dull way. There are as few excitingmoments, but when the finale reminds you a little of a Die AnotherDay/Sky Captain hybrid, you begin to care very little.Weaving is staggeringly underused, and is too straight faced, a littleAlan Rickman in Robin Hood could have given him some Gravitas, seeingas he thinks he's a god, but no, the screen writers decide to gostraight. So all in all, Evans is great, as are the rest of the underused cast,3d is pointless, and the film is dull, boring, with a few good actionscenes.I think Captain America will be at the end of many a put down by TonyStark, come May 2012.

Captain America The First Avenger

The final big summer superhero film has hit our screens and it looks asif they have saved the best till last. Marvel Studios ambitious projecthas its final missing piece added to the jigsaw with the release of'Captain America: The First Avenger' as it follows in the wake of the'Iron Man' films, 'The Incredible Hulk' and 'Thor.' It is 1942 andSteve Rogers (Chris Evans) is a determined and patriotic young maneager to join in the fight against the Nazi's. Unfortunately despitehis willingness he is a sickly 90 lb specimen and is rejected formilitary service. Feeling helpless and frustrated his life on thesidelines changes when he is recruited by Dr Abraham Erskine (StanleyTucci) and Rogers becomes a central part in Project Rebirth. After displaying exemplary courage Rogers is injected with a serum thatgenetically transforms his puny frame into the pinnacle of humanphysical ability. Rogers/Captain America now enters the fight with hisinternational team of allies headed by the world-weary and sardonicColonel Chester Phillips (an on form Tommy Lee Jones) and Peggy Carter(a spirited Hayley Atwell).Hugo Weaving is on bad guy duty as Captain America's nemesis JohanSchmidt aka The Red Skull who is head of Hitler's advanced weapondivision and the international terrorist organisation, HYDRA. The sceneis set for some epic fighting and the age-old struggle between good andevil. When I saw the trailer for this film I was worried that it would be acliché-ridden actioner that had its heart in the right place but wasultimately misguided. Oh, how wrong I was! Captain America is not aflag waving farce. Instead it is a well-scripted, tongue in cheekhomage to the Marvel character with plenty of humour and freneticaction along the way. The filmmakers have captured the Second World Warera exceptionally well from the streets of 1940s New York to the cornywar bond drives that poor Steve Rogers/Captain America must participatein before serving the allied cause in war torn Europe. There is the usual brief but amusing Stan Lee cameo as well as plentyof gadgets and hardware provided by Tony 'Iron Man' Stark's father,Howard (Dominic Cooper). The most important thing is that it is allhuge fun. The audience I watched the film with were of all ages andreally enjoyed it, laughing and gasping in all the right places.Marvel's big gamble seems to have paid off and it is all nicely set upfor the forthcoming 'Avengers' movie scheduled for release next year.

It is a blast to watch

Mark May 4, 2012 on your calendar, because "The Avengers" film will bereleased. So far in both "Iron Man" films, the second "The Hulk" film, and "Thor" film, we got clues about a powerful super hero team beingassembled to fight evil. One more piece was needed to complete "TheAvengers" and now we have the "Captain America" film.I was wondering how director Joe Johnston was going to get CaptainAmerica to modern times so he could become the final member of TheAvengers. He began the film with a discovery of a downed airplane inNorway. People from Washington, DC were contacted to check the wreckageand discovers the shield of Captain America. So the rest of the film is telling the story about how Steve Rogers avery skinny dude who wanted to fight in WWII but couldn't pass hisphysical, then a scientist used him for an experiment and it changeshis life. The performances of Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, StanleyTucci, Dominic Cooper, Neal Mc Donough, Derek Luke, Kenneth Choi, JJFeild, Bruno Ricci, Toby Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and ChrisEvans makes "Captain America: The First Avenger" a film you can't miss.Oh make sure you stay to see the extra scenes after the end credit andbefore the Paramount logo. You will be glad you did.

Inoffensive, all-American Marvel adaptation

I'm puzzled by something. The full title of this film is CaptainAmerica: The First Avenger. What exactly is he avenging during thefilm? It's made fairly clear to all of us that the reason Steve Rogersis chosen for the programme by which he becomes Captain America isbecause of his moral sense and constitution. Vengeance doesn't strikeme as a particularly savoury constituent part of moral strength. But then, this film is trying to conform to a number of perceivednecessities for a big action adventure flick - not least having a vapidtitle qualification. It's the same in the film, which could have beenscripted by rearranging the lines of similar features. I was prettybored and unmoved by quite a bit of it, not least as the natural cheekthat Chris Evans showed in the likes of The Fantastic Four is smotheredin the same studio MSG. I did like Stanley Tucci and Tommy Lee Jonesdoing their thing despite it all. I also liked the ending of which Iwish there had been more. It's reasonably produced (& period-designed),inoffensive multiplex padding. 4/10

Team America, this is not.

Marvel Studios' master plan is going well. Iron Man, The IncredibleHulk and Thor have each made the jump from page to screen, theiradventures paving the way for 'The Avengers'. All that remains isCaptain America, the last to be adapted before the characters can beassembled next summer. It is World War II, and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is deemed too smalland too weak to join the Army. He keeps trying, and eventually he findshimself in an experiment to create super soldiers. Meanwhile, Naziscientist Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) steps out of Hitler's shadowwith his own plans for world domination.Captain America was conceived as an unapologetically American symbol, designed to boost wartime morale. After the war, the character fadedinto obscurity, aside from a poorly planned revival labelled 'CaptainAmerica: Commie Smasher'. To most people he seems like a relic, a datedcaricature of overzealous patriotism. Turning him into a propercharacter, relevant to today's audience, was always going to be animmense challenge, especially when America's popularity seems to be inconstant debate.Thankfully, the film takes inspiration from the more sensible CaptainAmerica stories, the ones that focus on the man rather than the mask.Like any superhero origins story, this is indeed a 'zero to hero' tale, but the film is far more interested in the 'zero', leaving it to theinevitable sequel to focus on the capes and the colours. As it was with Christopher Nolan's 'Batman Begins', the protagonistspends most of the film not in costume. Viewers are given time to getto know the weakling Steve Rogers as he goes up against bigger, stronger men and proves his dedication to the values of courage andselflessness. This approach ensures that he always seems like the"brave little guy", regardless of how he later looks.By taking its time with the character development, the filmdemonstrates that it is more about ideals than it is about America, which makes the character more universally appealing. The title of'Captain America' is more of a formality than an accurate description. In fact, a solid segment of the film is devoted to ridiculing anddismissing the character's flag-waving origins.Chris Evans does a great job as Steve Rogers. His performance isconsistently understated; despite the increased muscles and colourfulclothes, it is always 'skinny Steve' that the audience sees. A specialmention goes to the special effects team, who have done remarkably wellin making the physically beefed-up actor look convincingly small andweak.Hugo Weaving is just as watchable in his role. The Red Skull is themost interesting villain in the Marvel films so far. His obsession withthe creation of 'the superior man' makes him a creepy echo of Hitler.Weaving's performance is a mix of German Agent Smith and Bond villain, which works very well.'Captain America: The First Avenger' is a very solid piece ofentertainment. There is a good balance of drama and cheese, of actionand humour. The 1940s setting is convincing and there is an old school,Indiana Jones vibe to it. It succeeds as another adaptation of comic-book property, fitting in perfectly with its companions. After this, and the post-credits tease, 'The Avengers' cannot come soon enough.

Standard Popcorn flick with lots of red white and blue.

As an origin story, Captain America is interesting in that is takes asurprisingly short amount of time to turn its character into the hero, whereas X-Men first class and Green Lantern (other blockbusters of thesame summer) needed almost their entire running length to do this. Theproblem with the Captain America approach is that once the humanbecomes superhuman, he ceases to become a character. Captain America is a well executed action movie, relying onchoreography not CGI to sell the product, and as a story, it gets fromA-Z in a rather fluid fashion. The problem is that it is an actionmovie full of boring people. Nobody, with the exception of HayleyAtwell (representing feminism in the WWII war effort) is all thatinteresting, least of all Chris Evans as the hero. As depicted by theunfolding of the plot here, The improbability that this guy wouldbecome Captain America is surprisingly high. If the movie took itself abit less seriously, this might be easier to swallow. The film comes with a lame and rather unsatisfactory ending. Needlessto say, it is an ending that opens the doors for a sequel. While I wontargue that Captain America doesn't deserve one, it may be not amemorable enough film to make you want more. It's a standard popcornflick, no more no less.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Through most of this excruciatingly dull picture, I felt like I hadseen this movie before. It brings to mind such duds as The League ofExtraordinary Gentlemen, and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Itstarted off well but quickly became tedious. The same old stuff I'veseen in a dozen superhero movies.Of the three Marvel adaptations released this year, I liked this onethe least. Thor was fun; X-Men First Class was a bit overlong but notbad; but this one was tough to sit through. I played a couple of gamesof Words with Friends while I was watching, and was really glad Ididn't get stuck in a theater with this one.Nice try, I guess, but the story doesn't engage your emotions on anylevel and is strictly by the numbers. If you haven't seen this yet ...you probably already have.

Marvel Has Lost It.

I was very excited when I was going to see this movie but my excitementflied away just after seeing the first 15 minutes of the movie. This isthe worst movie I'd seen in 2012. It is very bad remake of Bollywoodmovie 'Mr India (1987)'. The story of second half of the movie is minordifferent but very very bad . Chris Evans played the character of 'ArunVerma' of Mr. India . But his actions is too below than Arun Verma.Hugo Weaving tried the character of Mogambo but couldn't do like'Amrish Puri'. Special effects is of very low level. Somebody tell theAmerican directors that Bollywood is too far & don't try to imitatethem. In short sentence this film should be called "A piece of SH*T".
