Life after Deadwood!

After Deadwood came to a close I pretty much decided there was no needto keep my television. Only the Dynamic Duo of Stewart and Colbertsaved it. Then came Breaking Bad; or what I call 'life after Deadwood'.There is no need for me to wax on about this series. All the fansalready know, and anyone with even reasonable taste who happens tostumble across an episode will immediately recognize the quality of thewriting, performing, directing, lighting and whatever else it takes tocreate such a classic series. When I saw first Brian Cranston playingthe father I thought the series was doomed. I only knew the guy fromMalcolm, where he was entertaining and displayed excellent comic chopsbut, hey what did I know? I have never been so happy to be revealed asclueless. Cranston is amazing. His metamorphosis from passiveaggressive husband/father to hardcore meth God is the meat of theseries. But everyone is excellent. My only complaint has been in thelast season. The cartel assassins are a little bigger than life, IMO,and it sort of changes the tone of the show. But that's a minorcomplaint. Others have already written plenty about this show, and muchbetter than I could. So I'll leave the in depth analysis to the prosand close by simply saying 'watch it!'. "Best show on television" isnot hyperbole.

Some Fools just dont get Breaking Bad!!

Some of the idiots who are rating Breaking Bad poorly and knocking itfor stereotyping and poorly developed characters are just that..idiots.It is TV!!!! Of course most of it would probably NOT happen as it doeson the show but when you are condensing LIFE into a 1 hour segment fortelevision, it often WILL seem stereotypical! Yes, the lead characterand his partner escape death too many times to believe and yes, some ofthe BAD guys seem to far-fetched(the 2 Mexican Hit-man) to believe butthe show WORKS on so many levels if you approach it with a open mindand are WILLING to suspend some truths. I love the show and think thatother than a couple of "writer's liberties" the show is dead on andvery very entertaining! If you need absolute truth(all you who knockthe show) go read some Dali lama books!!

Hello, Mr. Cranston - Meet Ms. Emmy...

As the clueless, hapless and hopeless father of four on the celebratedseries MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, Bryan Cranston came into his own, as hedid an amazing balancing act that juggled slapstick, pathos andinsanity all at once, proving that not only did "father NOT know best",but more than likely never would. Now he essays the role of another father in the new series BREAKINGBAD, but it's a shocking, bracingly refreshing turn that takes his'Three Stooges' repertoire of grunts, shrieks, barks and neurotic ticksand virtually throws them out the window. Some of those qualities arestill there, but unlike MALCOLM, BREAKING is the blackest of blackcomedies. When I first heard about it, the reviews I read compared itheavily (and favorably) to the Coen Brothers' dark crime comedy FARGO.And the comparisons are aptly warranted. This is one of those series where the less you know about it going in,the better, but just to set your mind reeling with the possibilities, here it is in a nutshell: Cranston plays high school chemistry teacherWalter White, who is constantly battling the lackadaisical attitudes ofhis disinterested students, the looming specter of financial disaster -by supplementing his paltry teacher's salary with a second job at alocal car wash, and trying to cope with the impending arrival of a newbaby, even as he and his wife raise their disabled teenage son, whomunlike many stereotypical portrayals of handicapped kids is noPollyanna-like angel. Then in the midst of all this, Walter makes a shocking discovery: hehas inoperable lung cancer, and therefore only a few years left to liveat best. Facing the very real possibility of leaving his familystruggling not only with his death, but a financial situation thatcould only end in catastrophe, Walter suddenly has a revelation, thanksto an idea handed to him by his boorish brother-in-law, who works withthe DEA - he decides to become a crystal meth dealer. Okay, so while you're letting your brain take that all in, you alsoneed to know that this is one of those defining roles where you justknow that the lead actor will get Emmy recognition, whether he intendedto or not. That is just how good Cranston is as Walter. In fact, he'severy bit as good as Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan, JamesGandolfini's Tony Soprano or Harold Perrineau's criminallyunder-appreciated Augustus Hill. And he's backed by an amazingsupporting cast of mostly new or unfamiliar faces (with the exceptionof Dean Norris as the brother-in-law).You can tell from the word 'go' that writer/producer/director VinceGilligan (former head writer/exec producer on THE X FILES) has beenchamping at the bit for a while to let fly with a project like this. And if the first episode is any indication, AMC has another real winneron its hands. So MAD MEN will need to move over and make someroom...since BREAKING BAD isn't the kind of series to "ask nicely."Which brings up another important point: this is not a series foreveryone, the way that FARGO and Showtime's kindred-spirit drug dramedyWEEDS are not mainstream, either. This is sharp, biting, satiricalsocial commentary that draws blood when it sinks its teeth in, and youare guaranteed to wince even as you laugh out loud at Cranston'sdead-on portrayal of a MAN on the edge of a nervous breakdown (well, more like over the edge.)A caveat for would-be viewers, though, and a very ironic one at that:AMC has applied its ham-fisted method of editing its movies to thisseries as well, unfortunately, making the channel the LAST place youwant to see it. The best thing to do is to check out the premiereepisode whenever you can catch a rerun on AMC, then hustle on over toiTunes and download it so you can watch it again. Some very importantscenes and some impressive establishing shots have been "edited fortime and content" from the broadcast version, and this is material thatIS essential to your experience viewing this show. There is a lot moreto the characters and situations than you will be allowed to see onbasic cable. So as you watch, keep that in mind. And after you are done marveling at this magnificent character studysketched in desperation, you can wonder as I did, whether BryanCranston will bother preparing a speech for next year's Emmys. I surehope he does...thanks to his work on BREAKING BAD, he'll need it.

Where does comedy stop and tragedy begin?

Seasons 1 and 2 have recently been shown on UK digital TV on the "FiveUSA" channel. They've packed the whole lot into about ten weeks, and Ihave been gripped since the first seconds.I've never seen anything like this, and I've never seen any series cramso much "story" into each episode. The characters, for the most part, are completely believable - you've met them all yourselves. Theiractions are completely consistent with their characters. If you canaccept Walter's initial decision to build up a cash nest-egg for thefamily he is expecting to leave destitute, then everything that happensseems to follow inevitably. There's no way back, you're at the bottomof a hole you've dug for yourself, and all the alternatives to "keepdigging" will have even more horrendous consequences.I didn't think I'd see anything better than "The Wire", but if this onecan maintain it's standard through season 3 and onwards, it may wellrun it close. "Breaking Bad" is up there with "The Sopranos" and"Dexter" as outstanding entertainment. This is very black humour, interlaced with the tragedy of both strong and ineffectivepersonalities being forced to take actions they know are wrong andreally don't want to do. Every decision, however logical it may seem, leads to a situation where yet another unpalatable decision has to bemade. It's a bit like real life.

Amazing Demonstration of Low Budget Filmmaking

To all you independent filmmakers out there:Take a look how this show is filmed. It is so simple yet gripping. There are no moving camera shots for the most part and the camera isalways on a steady cam. No dollies involved and they use simple anglesand very few close ups. Shows like this inspire me to thinking that I can actually makesomething similar. As far as the writing, it is top notch and verylayered. The writers pay off all their plot devices and set up themequally as good. I also like how they dwell on certain scenes for 4-5minutes at a time. It creates a certain realism that emulates reallife. As far as the content, it is captivating in a sick way, similarto Pulp Fiction and other black crime comedies. My favorite part about this show is Aaron Paul and his madness. Theshow truly captures the up and down spiral of dealing drugs or doingthem. There will always be downfalls and people going to jail or dyingaround you. One minute you have thousands, then the next you're leftbroke and have nothing. Some of the best moments are when Walter and APare frantically disposing or moving drug money/paraphernalia. I lovehow they always hide sixty grand under the kitchen sink or in theirvents. A must see and definitely one of the best shows of the last decade.

Step aside Tony Montana, cause here comes Walter White.

What an awesome change of pace for Bryan Cranston, who is best knownfor playing the goofy dimwitted Homer Simpson like dad from Malcom InThe Middle(2000-2006). But this character is not goofy or dimwitted.Walter White is your everyday man, who is a high school chemistryteacher, and has a loving wife and handicapped son. On the verge of his50th birthday party. He begins having a mid life crisis, to makematters worse, he is diagnosed with terminal cancer. But not wanting toleave his family with nothing, in a quick way to make a lot of money. He teams up with a former student named Pinkmam(Aaron Paul) who is nowa drug dealer, to make the drug called Crystal Meth. You don't likewhat Walter is doing, but at the same time you try to understand why heis doing it. I like watching the transformation he is going through, like Mr.Chips turning into Michael Douglas from Falling Down(1993).This series is quite enjoyable, it's a good dramatic series, with somehumor moments. Cranstons performance in the show is memorable, and attimes heartbreaken to watch. And he and Aaron Paul play off each otherso well. I hope it will last a little while.

Not as good in reality as it is in premise...

...And to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure the premise is so superduper either. We are presented with a rather cliché', overly dramatic (soapmaterial?) storyline. A frustrated, middle agedman/chemist/genius/teacher/part-time car washer with cancer, a pregnantwife, and an impaired child decides that with little else to live forhe will, at least, make certain that his kid gets to go to collegebefore he dies. He will do this by finally putting his talent to gooduse cooking Meth. Okeedokee. The 'jackpot of despair' aside, what is more disappointing is how somany shows utilize the same 'Rucken Figure' facing the abyss motif. It's predictable and perhaps past its effectiveness. It was morepurposeful when Bresson and Tarkovsky used it and in its update offeredto us by Bela Tarr. I know that every time Walt stares off into thedistance with his maudlin masked face I am left to deal with a verypalpable awkwardness. This 'awkwardness', permeating the series, can befelt in the writing, the gimmicky camera work (example: a shot where wesee Jesse digging a hole in the desert from a physically impossibleposition beneath the earth's surface), quirky comic effects like musicvideos and weird advertisements (example:the appearance of Bob Odenkirkin a Mr. Show skit abrasively appearing on Jesse's T.V.). Don'tmisunderstand me, I applaud experimentation and I loved Mr. Show but inBreaking Bad everything feels forced and slap dash and I'm never reallyallowed to lose myself in the story.Clearly, there is a lot going on here so there is just enough time tooffer up two dimensional characters with hints of a third. Everyonedoes well within their narrow parameters but Bryan Cranston seemsunable to suggest even the possibility of a hidden persona behind theever present wounded, self-pitying, ne'er do well. There is something missing here. Heavy reliance on stylization seems tobe a trademark of AMC, I'm thinking Mad Men here, but it's not areplacement for intricate, intimate storytelling and real innovation.

Easily the best show ive seen.

I don't know where to begin. This show fulfills everything I reallyexpect to see in a good TV series. It has a way of even making the slow scenes entertaining. Not manyfilms/series' can do that. It really is one of those shows where youcant wait any longer for the next episode. I recently bought all 4seasons and have just watched it non-stop.The acting is ace. I love the relationship Mr White and Jessie have, although at sometimes i feel pitiful for Jessie, the stray druggie whohas a heart of gold. The way it incorporates all the setbacks to the drug production allowsthe TV series to expand its limitations and take it to unexpectedtwists, it is really hard to predict what will happen next in thisshow, which i loveAll in all i believe it is yet to be beaten as a series.

Very good character development and acting, highly recommended

*** The spoilers here are minor. *** Breaking Bad is an excellentaction TV series. It makes you think, too. That's not all that commonof a combination. It has brains and brawn. It also has a goodsmattering of dark humor. There's lots of excellent characterdevelopment and acting to be found here. On the other hand potentialviewers should be advised that every once in a while there is extremegore put on the TV screen - body dissolved in acid - detached head of adrug snitch attached to the back of a tortoise - etc. Hey, it's aseries about drug dealing. On the other hand it's also a series aboutrelationships between people, their aspirations, tragedies and thehidden dark spots in their lives. What good or evil are the people thatyou know really capable of? Did Pip in Great Expectations have a cluethat his benefactor was the convict he had helped as a child? Sometimespeople will do quite unexpected things.

Breaking Bad is the best television show

"Breaking Bad" is the best television show. Ever.We start out with one main character, Walter White (played by BryanCranston), who is struggling to make ends meet working both as a highschool chemistry teacher and part time at a car wash. Then he getsdiagnosed with cancer. Then he breaks bad.Teaming up with an unlikely sidekick, Jesse Pinkman (played by AaronPaul), who is the immature "yo, bitch"-spouting, high-school-screw-upsmall-time drug dealer, Walt and Jesse both put their skills towardsthe drug world to try to make good by their families. This show has been masterfully put together with layer upon layer ofinsight into some of the most interesting characters ever realized inthe history of television. We have some very dark characters, and a lotof grey characters, and it all adds up to brilliant dialogue and plotlines. The creator, writers, directors and actors have paid attention to everysingle detail, putting thought into every nuance in every character inevery scene. Because of this attention to detail there is something foreveryone in this show. Every thinking brain will immediately beattracted to the intelligence so evidently on display, that even ifyou're not a drug dealing chemist living in Albuquerque, you will findsomething in the characters that connects you to them and makes youhang on for dear life.Get on your couch now and start watching "Breaking Bad" from the verybeginning, and don't miss a single scene.

A very rare masterpiece of a television show....

I first watched this show when it aired, based on a friendsrecommendation. I heard the premise, and was VERY interested. A middleaged highschool chemistry teacher dying of cancer starts making andselling crystal meth to support his family before he dies. He finds akinship, and partner of sorts, with a former student/slacker of his,Jesse Pinkman. The first season was cut short, coming in at only 7episodes, but the second season has the full 12. Give this show achance, its very addictive. Walter White is a character you want toroot for, but sometimes find yourself asking how you can. The pacing ofthe story is brilliant, as is the creepy foreshadowing of the finaleall throughout the 2nd season. This isn't a typical show, with typicalcharacter... we empathize and sympathize with Walter White, and hopethat in the end there is a reason for all his madness. He starts out asnothing more than a nerdy, over-qualified chemistry teacher, but by theend of the first season, he has definitely grown accustomed to hisalter ego "Heisenberg", the meth kingpin of New Mexico. ObviouslyWalter gets himself in over his head, and thats what keeps us sointerested... Season 3 starts in a couple weeks, and anyone who caughtthe 2nd season finale this past summer, is obviously dying to see whereit goes from here!

Fantastic and out of this world!!!

I've seen many television shows, and almost of every worth while movieever produced. In my opinion this is on of my top five favorite ineither category. The story is captivating and will grip your attentionthroughout every minute(you won't be getting up for a drink). Myfavorite aspect of the series would have to be the acting witch isincredible. Bryan Cranston is phenomenal, and portrays his character tothe letter. With the perfect combination of action, drama, and materialthats makes you think this is by far one of the best television seriesto ever hit the air waves joining the likes of "The Sopranos" "OZ" "TheWire" and in my opinion "Dexter" witch is another superb series. What Ifind most incredible about it is they are able to create such afantastic experience on cable T.V. without the freedoms of HBO andSHOWTIME. GREATTTTTT SHOW. WATCH IT!!!!!!

Best show on TV period

This show is better than nearly every movie coming out of Hollywood. Those clowns that spend 100 million dollars to make crappy movies thatrely only on CGI and explosions could learn so much from a show thatlikely costs a couple million...for the whole season!!! The show hasfully developed characters, incredible plot twists, slow suspensepeppered with just enough shock and horror to leave you on the edge ofyour seat. It is also funny at times. The only bad thing is each episode is so good the time flies and youmust wait an entire week in suspense to watch again. Few shows inhistory have that quality. The only one in recent memory that was justas good and quite similar with the suspense, characters etc. was therebooted and much darker Battlestar Galactica series that ran on Sci-Fia few years ago (also called the best show on TV at that time byNewsweek, TV guide etc.). ....Two of the best shows I've ever seenhands down

The most groundbreaking drama on television

Breaking Bad, on the surface, seems to be a marketable and typical showfollowing the usual premise of a middle class American leading a doublelife- one for good, and one for evil- in the wake of other great showslike the Sopranos, Dexter, Weeds, etc. However, what starts off as an enjoyable drama evolves into abeautifully crafted tale- the stuff of a complex modern Shakespeariantragedy. Breaking Bad is more than just a television show. It is a workof art. The acting is mostly impeccable, and the writing and dialogueis original and profound. On top of it all, the directing style seemsto have evolved and improved throughout the series. Nearly every shotis a masterpiece of its own.So if you are looking for an original series, which will not only killa couple of hours, but also leave you seeing the world in a differentway- finding story in every small instance around you- this is the showfor you

Potentials

Yes this series had potentials. The reason I'm using past tense isbecause that the damage is unfixable. Unlike to other reviews that youwill read i will stick to the essence of what people need to read andthat is facts. To begin with i will start with the pros. Character selection is themajor asset of this series. All roles are well played representingexactly the feelings that need to be transferred to the audience. Otherthan that, what i liked in this series is the photography. Niceoriginal shots that make you partially not to pay attention to thescenarios flaws.Yes the scenario is leaking from everywhere. First of all there is lack of focus. When i say lack of focus i meanwhat is this movie about? Is it a drama which speaks about a family mandoing whatever he can to provide? If this is the answer then 4-5episodes should be enough to present that. However the series is off tothe 4th season and i yet to understand why i am watching it. Definitelyis not for the suspense or the action. Neither for the cool chemistryinvolved.Second, the scenario does not convince me. Although that 70% of thestory is brightly written many scenes just do not sum up. What youwould expect from a chemistry genius related scenario is at least tojustify its actor's actions.Another con is the long meaningless dialogs. In every episode there areat least 3-4 dialogs that put you to sleep. Summing up what i would like to see from this series is: 1) Coolchemistry involved 2) More action 3) Less talkingand 4) please some suspense

Interesting but fades quickly

The first season (10/10) is original, interesting and develops thecharacters nicely, appearing to learn about each other and the industrythey're entering. The second season (5/10) is interesting but the fumbling characterdialogue is tiring, the story is predictable and lost it's way from theoriginality of season one, perhaps I'm looking for The Wire but insteadreceived a damp squid. The third season (2/10) is slow, boring, off point, ineptitudecharacter scripting and darn right annoying. I often found my selfstaring at the wall hoping for the episode to end and question why am Istill watching this! You are saved by one or two interesting episodesbut except to be dramatically let down immediately afterwards. The fourth season (3/10) is an improvement on the third but stillcontains underdeveloped characters, do they not learn from theirmistakes, is the script/dialogue written by a snail? It moves at thesame pace! Bored.
