Not what I expected... better!

From the name of the title (and I guess from watching a bit of thetrailer, but not all, since I don't like spoilers) I thought this filmwas about traveling to another earth, identical to ours, where we couldstart over or live in a reality where our mistakes could have beenmissed, but with some kind of plot twist, of course, to make itinteresting and/or make us think a little.Thats not what this film is about and neither is it suited or peoplewho like sci-fi but can't have a sci-fi film where the science behindit isn't correct, because this film has a lot of things unexplained orjust highly unlikely. But that's not what this film is about. This film is about two people,a man who lost his pregnant wife and son in an car accident and thegirl who is to blame for it. Brit Marling does a wonderful job makingus empathise with what the character's thinking, from that moment sheunderstand what she has done, to the moment where she understands thather future in MIT was lost, or from the moment where she feels like allshe can do is make his life a bit better day by day, to the moment hetells her about the teenager that killed his family. And WilliamMapother doesn't fall behind, as he plays the role of a man who doesn'tcare to clean up his house and who plans on spending his life drinkingto forget. However, the two roles make a wonderful combination when hefeels happy for her and suddenly asks her to stay, because then, herguilt burns her inside out and she ends up confessing, a moment whereyou feel both her repentance and his spine-chilling dreadfulness.Yes, a sad story that didn't really end well, depending on how you seeit. My version is that while Rhoda from Earth 1 suddenly decided togive her ticket to John, Rhoda from Earth 2 decided to run away, andboth found out the sad truth just by that moment, since she could onlyhave gotten the ticket after submitting her attempt, which she did inorder to run away from all that. At least that's what fits well for me,what makes the movie perfect.I find it really interesting that Brit wrote her own script for this, since it's a nice initiative and it came out beautiful! It was indeed a wonderful piece that moved me more than I would'veimagined. It's just so tragic that both their lives ceased and eventhought some might argue that it's her fault, neither of them deservedit, which makes you think it isn't fair, but it's not supposed to befair or unfair, it's just... life.

Dont watch this if youre a sci-fi fan - its not really that genre.

This is a very average melodrama that touts itself as a movie about"another earth" being found in our solar system. It is NOT science fiction really at all, it's not Star Trek,Transformers or Total Recall. What it is, is a melodramatic story of ayoung woman who causes an accident right at the beginning and feelsguilty and wants to atone, and then it's the story of the man whosefamily she decimated and how they get together. The whole "other earth" scenario is honestly stupid - oh look, there'sa new planet just popped up in our solar system and we can see it asclear as the moon from earth - I mean seriously, it's supposed to beTHAT close and we never noticed it before. Let's not even get into thebeyond ridiculous concept of that, because if you're a sci fi fan thismovie will have likely lost you right at the beginning.SPOILER And let's not get into the whole bit about it being a 100%duplicate of earth, with the same people who lived the same lives etc.I mean that could have been sinister perhaps, but just came across assilly. The lead actors did a good job, I always like William Mapother, butthis movie is so slow a jar of molasses could outrun it.I like artsy movies, I love melodramas, I watch all kinds of movies, but for goodness sake don't try to combine artsy with sci fi andmelodrama, it just doesn't make for entertaining watching, it's simplya cure for insomnia. As to the ending, which I won't spoil if you still want to watch thismovie after this review, I thought it was pretty lame and it was likethey phoned it in. I was not surprised, shocked, etc, just glad themovie was finally over.

good film for cube fans.

OK so it started so promisingly with the sharp impact of the car crashthen seemed to veer into hand held territory on a budget....what keptmy attention was the great storyline and the terrificperformances....and then the film ,as if knowing its potential, rose togreat heights....the premise isn't unfamiliar but it is done in a freshenough way to make it seem so....the realistic approach to Rhoda'sfirst meeting with the father and subsequent developments were alsosuperbly portrayed....the only clunkers to me were the blind cleanerwho was too philosophical and the brother who I didn't believe as acharacter.... the ending was superb no spoilers....a very enjoyablefilm :}

OK Drama Ruined by Bolting on Bad SF

Another Earth (1:32, PG-13) — other: drama, bargain basement, originalDo not go to see Another Earth for the science fiction, which ishowlingly ludicrous. In fact, the film would've played better if the entire SF premise hadbeen subtracted from it altogether, which would only have cut its92-minute running length down to about 83 or 84.It's a tiny independent movie, with everything that implies: hand-heldsingle camera, extreme close-ups, long pregnant pauses, charactersstaring portentously off into the distance, Goodwill costuming, 2obviously private homes used as sets, and a microscopic cast; WilliamMapother and writer-producer Brit Marling get about 97% of the screentime.I won't waste your time on the un-freaking-believable plot premiseabout how an exact duplicate of Earth (yes, exact! same people andeverything) has been orbiting on the far side of the Sun for all ofhuman history but suddenly, for no apparent reason, and whilecontinuing to share Earth's orbit, decides to mosey on over to our sideand take up residence right next to the Moon. As I said, howlinglyludicrous. The real story concerns a bright teenager, Rhoda Williams, who's inlove with space, astronomy, and science fiction, and gets a scholarshipto MIT while she's still only 17. After a celebratory party, she'sdriving home when word comes over the car radio about this new planetnow in view in the night sky. For some reason, this space junkie hasn'tyet heard of its appearance, even tho it's currently bigger andbrighter than Venus, so she's looking up at it thru the open moonroofwhen another car crosses her path.Four years later, after her stint in prison (where, as a minor at thetime of her crime, her identity was not revealed), she trepidatiouslyapproaches the home of John Burroughs, the college professor andmusical composer whose wife and young son were killed in the collision, intending to apologize. But she loses her nerve at the last minute andcovers by saying she's from a cleaning company, come to offer a freetrial. Burroughs, who's been living despondently in a pigsty, accepts, and the rest of the movie is about their subsequent relationship, withthe occasional jarring and largely irrelevant reference to Earth 2thrown in as a distraction. It's a drama, ruined by bolting on bad science fiction. They shouldhave left well enuf alone.

Average movie, good music and cinematography

I was rather looking forward to this movie, but was quite disappointedwhen I saw it. It's slow paced and quite predictable. It was pretty obvious early on that the other earth was exactly thesame as our world. It was also obvious, especially after the scenewhere the SETI scientist talks to her other self, that the similaritywould be broken once the two worlds interact with each other. And yetthe movie chooses to reveal this very late, making it painfully slowand boring. There are also lots of scientific errors in the movie. It seems likethe science was conveniently chosen to fit the storyline of the movie. However, it's interesting to experience the girl's trauma, as youoscillate between demonizing her, to pitying her. The music iswonderful.

Awful

Sometimes when I read positive reviews I can't help thinking that thefilm makers family and friends have gone to very, very great efforts tomake it seem that lots and lots of people think the movie is reallygood. That's the only conclusion I can reach why there are any positivereviews for this film. It's like a fairly good student film. Lots of work might have gone intoit, but it's a fairly good, and not exceptional, student film.Abysmal science, amateurish writing, amateurish acting, bad score, lousy plot, silly film from start to finish. If I was a student, I'd be fairly proud to have made this film as myfirst feature. But as a watchable film? Forget it.This is probably the most amateurish science fiction film I've everseen, from start to finish.

Parallel Postulations

Wow, I've just seen Another Earth, and had one of those rarelife-changing movie experiences. OK, who has REALLY had their lifechanged by a movie, but isn't it great when you FEEL like your life haschanged? It's a testament to being really moved, and who knows - maybea seed has been planted. For me, the cosmonaut story was the embryo ofthis "seedy" movie. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Getting rid of thenoise inside your head by hearing it as music. Well, I guess my lifehasn't changed; my wife is watching TV now, and I had to put inearplugs to drown out the noise so I can focus on writing this review.Oh well. Maybe I'm a hopeless case. But enough about me. Another Earthgives new meaning to finding yourself, that's for sure. It exploressuch profound topics as forgiveness, atonement, and love, withintelligence and beauty, but within the framework of a simple story andno-nonsense characters. Who cares if it changes your life, anyway? It'sjust a great movie. See it, and maybe the stars and planets in your ownpersonal universe will be more scintillating, at least for a while.

I paid money to watch this, so I may not be reliable.

Aarghh. What did I just waste my pay-per-view money on? AE is neitherartistic nor profound, and I don't understand what the purpose ofmaking it was. By now everybody knows the "gimmick," but there's nopay-off. The idea of examining oneself (or having the opportunity to doso) is vaguely interesting, but it would have been served a lot betterby using time-travel as the gimmick. At least then the characters couldhave encountered themselves earlier or later in their lives. After all,if you've established that everything is the same on the alternateworld (right down to what souvenirs a person bought many years ago),then what are you going to learn from the other you? They've hadexactly the same experiences and they have turned out exactly the sameway. Is it just that misery loves company (which seems to be suggestedin the concluding shot of the film)? And as some other reviewers have pointed out, presumably the samepeople died on both planets and there's not really much point intraveling between them. (And even if you find your deceased spousestill alive, are you going to just waltz in and try to take her fromthe other you?) Finally, since everyone else picks on the physics and science of themovie (and deservedly so, since the whole idea is just plain dumb), Iwill pick out what was to me the most unbelievable part of the moviefor further scorn: When you write an essay about why you should go intospace and then win a trip on the basis of your essay, they're not goingto let you re-gift that trip to just anybody else you pick.BTW, the leading character has some problems far more serious than thesuperficial ones addressed in the movie.

Enlightening

Putting certain things in words sometimes is just not the same as theraw feeling or thought itself. That is why we make music, books, paintings, films, etc. To convey and share with others the unknownquestions, doubts, emotions that we experience in this grand andmystical life. When someone is being truly honest you get a film like Another World. It is someone like you and me, bringing up thoughts and concerns thatwe all feel in a cinematic way. Questions about identity, life, itsmeaning and purpose as well as all the things the film elicits fromyou: the watcher. When you watch this film, or experience any art form, the mostimportant thing to do is to find for yourself how you can learn fromit. Not on your own terms, be it some scientific logical way or the waysome movies explain everything to you, but in a way that you letyourself be immersed in the world created by someone who respects youthe audience. Please watch this film, I am sure that if you see thismovie with an open mind you will get something out of it that is bothrewarding and beautiful:) I did.

A quietly powerful work of art

"O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others seeus." – Robert Burns Beginning as a blue speck in the far distant horizon, in four years anew planet resembling Earth has moved into our solar system, creating ahovering phantom-like globe in the sky that puzzles scientists andlaymen alike, but brings a feeling of wonder to the night sky. Winnerof the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film and the Jury Prize at the SundanceFilm Festival, Mike Cahill's low-budget film, Another Earth, is aquietly beautiful meditation on guilt, redemption, and second chances.Though it has some implausible elements, it is so skillfully writtenand performed that these elements seem irrelevant. Cahill demonstratesthat science fiction movies do not have to have blaring music, unendingfrenzy, CGI effects, or ugly and violent monsters to successfullycapture our imagination. The premise of the film is that the new planet is an exact mirror ofthe Earth, containing a duplicate version of ourselves who mirror ourearthly circumstances. Cahill's main focus, however, is not the newplanet but the attachment between two damaged individuals who begin tobring each other back to life after a devastating incident that foreverscarred their lives. As the film opens, Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling),a bright 17-year old, unsteady after a night of celebrating heracceptance into MIT, drives her car through a red light, puttingcomposer John Burroughs (William Mapother) in a coma and killing hispregnant wife and their young son.The film then jumps ahead four years when the still guilt-ridden andmorose Rhoda is released from prison and tries to set her life inorder, moving back with her parents Kim (Jordan Baker) and Robert(Flint Beverage), and her brother Jeff (Robin Taylor). Though she hadplanned on studying Astrophysics, the only job she can now get isworking as a high school janitor, a job where she keeps to herselfwithout much interaction with others. When she sees John placing a toyrobot at the site of the accident, on a whim she goes to his housepretending to be a maid offering a free trial for a cleaning serviceoddly called "Maid in Heaven." In the back of her mind, however, is finding a way to release her innertorment. Fascinated with this sullen but obviously highly intelligentwoman, John takes her up on her offer and asks her to come back eachweek to clean his house. At first uncommunicative both verbally andemotionally, the two alienated people slowly begin opening up to eachother a little bit more each week. Though Rhoda eventually plans totell John that she was responsible for the accident that killed hisfamily, their visits seem to bring them to a new awakening of what ispossible in their life, and she repeatedly postpones her confession. After listening to TV broadcasts talking constantly about thepossibility that your identical twin on Earth 2 might be a happier andmore satisfied version of you, Rhoda enters a contest to become thefirst voyager to visit the other Earth. Astonishingly, she wins firstprize after a heart rendering essay describing the reasons she wants togo. At first, pleading with her not to go through with it, John'sattitude is changed drastically after she reveals her complicity in thefatal accident, a scene that leads to a startling and unpredictableconclusion.Supported by the ethereal sounds of the group "Fall on Your Sword,"Another Earth engenders powerful performances that deserve recognitionat awards time. Marling, who also co-wrote the film, gives an intenseand moving performance that brings her character fully to life. Thoughthe film misses an important teachable moment near the end, it is aquietly powerful work of art that suggests that truth lays more ininner than in outer space, and that the biggest world to conquer is theone that is right before our eyes. As author Marcel Proust put it, "Thereal voyage of discovery lies in not seeing new landscapes but inhaving new eyes."

A Very Beautiful Slow Movie

This is not a commercial movie, but something like a documentary shotwith a commercial movie like quality. The storyline in the IMDb main page describes the premise of thismovie, but thats not what this movie is about. The other planet thing is just like the background music, its there foreffect. Other Earth is all about beauty, the attention to detail andthe simple yet delicate story. Its a lot like those many many beautiful Japanese movies (Tokyo Storycomes to my mind, though I have to say its not as good as that). Its abeautiful journey, and when its done you lie back and think about itsbeauty. This movie is highly recommended if you enjoy simple movies like those. This is not a sci-fi and even the logic behind the other planet is toofar fetched and they don't even hide it, they never go into anyscientific details. There is also no action, nor is it a thriller. If you see it, please give us your feedback.Cheers. :-)............

One lifeless scene after another.

I never went into seeing this picture with any hopes of suspense, butwith a clear head and no expectations. The lines..or lack there of is intolerable, Rhoda (Brit Marling) is toozombie-alike. The scenes are cut in the worst way possible. I meandon't get me wrong, i love watching films that surprises me, but thiswas just a waste of time really. Yes it does contain a few beautifulscenes, and some of the music is quite good. That a side, i hope inever end up watching a movie as half-*ssed as this. I've seen betterpictures from far less known producers/directors.Conclusion: If you like a movie that is a lot like stills, veryunintuitive, unimaginative and kinda awkward in a sense of directionand acting, then this movie is definitely for you.

An absolute MUST SEE !!

Read no reviews. They will spoil the experience. Some will hate it &those like me, who it connects with will oversell it. 13 years sincethe release of The Matrix & I have waited that long to see this film. From the opening bar of the music on a black screen you are drawn inimmediately. You leap from your chair and free-fall into Another Earth.I was surprised that people call this a sci-fi movie. It is so farremoved from sci-fi, rather it poses the question: What is our purpose?Understated, Another Earth is so well thought out, so well created, realised & acted, but very powerful & proves again that when theAmericans really want to, they are able to hit the mark on a level noother can. This film works on a million levels. The music complimentsthe visual in a way that you'd be justified in saying, the filmcompliments the music. I was blown away. If you see this on yourtelevision the first time, you will regret not seeing it in the cinema.Forget everything you think you know about cinema and about music, forthat matter & go see this film now. Immerse yourself & be mesmerised, which is after all cinema's endeavour. Expect nothing & experience themost emotional laden movie that stirs the intellect to the point whereyour emotions take a back seat. It deals with grief & existence.Everything about this film suggests you should cry. I could not. Itengages the brain & the heart simultaneously. The net result is anintellectual emotion you rarely experience. How many movies can claimthat? I salute the creators. WE, as humans, ARE CAPABLE OF greatdestruction, but we are equally capable OF PROFOUND INSIGHT. Abeautiful film that restores your faith in us, as a race. What Tree ofLife tried to illustrate in 139mins, Another Earth achieves in theopening sequence. One quote from the film captures its essence. "Withinour lifetimes, we've marvelled as biologists have managed to look atever smaller and smaller things. And astronomers have looked furtherand further into the dark night sky, back in time and out in space. Butmaybe the most mysterious of all is neither the small nor the large:it's us..."

Another EarthAnother You - So What

Would anyone really want to spend the day with himself/herself ifhe/she found there was a planet that contained an identical self foreach of us? "Uh, remember in 5th grade when I-you-we..." "Yep, Iremember, I was there too..." Who cares. Interesting premise, but Ithink most people would be bored of themselves pretty quickly; evenidentical twins/triplets/quads aren't that similar. And everyone wouldalways suspect everyone else of playing "switch-a-roo" tricks onothers. The movie asks a lot of questions heavy-handedly, and the audiencefills in its' own answers - that's weak writing. And what is the John Burroughs character going to do on "Earth 2"? Ishe going to find his other self with his wife and children, and say,"Uh, I know it's not your fault that a drunk-driving ditsy-ding-batslaughtered my family on Earth, but, uh, I want to take your place uphere on Earth 2 so I can be with my family again...uh..." ?The acting was a bit stiff throughout, but it wasn't terrible. BritMarling as "Rhoda Williams" was perfect as a sort of gawky "Olive Oyl"with a pretty face; she played an "outsider" really well. I never feltbad for the "Rhoda Williams" character, but I could not take my eyesoff of her either. It's a very moody, atmospheric film of little consequence.

An Awful Movie, Waste of Time, Have nothing to do with the title

3 words! WHAT THE EFF!This film is so awful. I just wasted my precious time watching thismovie. I downloaded this movie because of its name, I guessed it wouldbe more about "Another Earth", BUT, they only show one awful femalelead who doesn't even know how to speak. Ending was even worse whichdin't even made any sense. What was the point of showing the duplicateof the female lead.. and not even mentioning, who visited whom...?Script is so poor. There's barely any communication between charactersof the movie. "Earth Two" was every where. Where ever the camera moves,Earth Two was there.. I mean.. there's hell lot of goofs in the movieand I'm shocked how this movie even crossed 7 rating on IMDb?? It's a 2star rating movie.

Even MC Escher would struggle to illustrate the paradoxical conundrum which the ending offers.

It's laughable that the nitpickers are complaining about the scientificimpossibilities related to the sudden appearance of a second Earth inthe Solar System. All you whiners out there need to know that thismovie is not so much about the sci-fi, but more about destiny as theprincipal theme. It's not about whether gravity and cosmic chance allowa second Earth or not. So put back those "Physics for Dummies" booksback on your shelves, ye viewers of little intelligence, and switch onyour tiny brains. Worse yet, I bet these viewers are the same peoplewho watched "Sunshine" and found nothing wrong with it (scientificallyor otherwise).Nitpicking is a fine art, not to be dabbled into by dilettantes andchildren, and to be practiced only when necessary. I should know, for Iam one of the greatest nitpickers of all time.Instead of whining about the issue of gravity, these reviewers shouldhave focused more on the strange ending, which offers more additionalquestions than answers, which is the ideal way to finish a sci-fimystery drama, as far as I'm concerned. The implications of Rhoda beingvisited by her Earth 2 double is that the other Rhoda, Rhoda 2, hadn'tfared any better in life than Rhoda 1, i.e. that John's wife and kid(s)are dead on that planet as well. This is of course a downer endingwhich the writers took in account, knowing full well that in returnthey get to end the film with the meeting of a pair of duplicates, which was one of the major running themes in the movie, i.e. what wouldone do and say if faced with the very bizarre prospect of meeting one'sparallel self.It was a fitting way to end the film, even though the more conventionalviewers (the few that mistakenly thought that they should be watchingthis kind of flick, the ones waving "Physics for Dummies" around likesome over-zealous street preachers) will be irked that the ensuingconversation between the two Rhodas wasn't shown.BUT. HOWEVER.There is a hitch, an implied paradox, in the ending. If Rhoda 2 waschosen by Earth 2 for the mission then we have to assume that thismeans that Rhoda 2 also killed John's family i.e. that the two-Earthssynchronicity hadn't been broken 4 years earlier. On the other side ofthe coin, i.e. using another kind of logic, we could argue thatsymmetry HAD been broken after all because the two earths chosedifferent people (albeit connected through destiny) for theirrespective missions, which would give hope to John 1 that his familyare alive and well on Earth 2.I do wonder whether the writers are/were aware of these two strange, conflicting conclusions which the last scene throws at us. I have mydoubts (movie writers are notorious for not thinking things through). It's a bit like dabbling with time-travel - you just can't win, becauseillogic and contradictions get the better of you no matter how you setup the conclusion. It became clear early on that John would ask Rhoda not to go when shegot chosen for the mission. I thought she'd make the ultimate sacrificeby rejecting the offer to visit the new planet, and that that would bethe film's dramatic high-point ending, sort of a strange attempt atredemption. However, the twist the writers had in mind was far lesspredictable, i.e. the sudden surprise decision brought on by Rhodahearing about "the broken mirror theory" on TV, which gave her hopethat John's family might be alive and well on Earth 2. Alas, shevacated her seat to him for nothing. (Or did she?) Either way, the upside for her was that she got the opportunity to meether other self, which she otherwise would probably have missed on hadshe flown on the mission (although this part is purely speculative,we'd need an actual sequel to answer that one, though something tellsme that this is not the type of movie that would spawn a sequel in amillion years). Perhaps whatever she'd heard from this other Rhodamight have helped her in some way to come to terms with the past, especially if that info contains the confirmation that John's family isalive at Earth 2.I had anticipated that Rhoda 2 would be arriving to Earth 1, thisseemed perfectly logical given that everything was a perfect replica onthe other side. However, the writers cleverly (or perhapsunintentionally?) veered clever viewers such as myself off that courseby suggesting in the last moment that the synchronicity had been broken4 years earlier, only to deliver the surprise ending that they socraved, as a genuine surprise and not the expected phoney-baloney"surprise twist".Quality sci-fi should be like this, occupying your mind well after theend-credits have stopped rolling, even if the logic isn't 100%water-tight. You see, "The Butterfly Effect", the non-thinking man'ssci-fi darling, doesn't do that. Well, not exactly. I laughed for hoursafter that film ended, i.e. my mind was occupied by it, but for all thewrong reasons, sort of like after viewing "Plan 9 From Outer Space".Nice soundtrack.

This was the worst movie I have seen in the longest time. I actually signed up to let everyone know.

I don't even know where to begin, however, I have to start somewhere...Let's start with the IMDb rating. Somehow it managed to receive a 7Rating. A 7 IMDb? Really?! You gave this movie a 7?!?! This was one ofthe worst movies in all of film history. Without question. How is iteven remotely possible that this movie received any rating above a 3?It was so terrible I couldn't even finish it. I finish EVERY movie, andthat's goes to show you how awful it was. I stopped it halfway, anddecided to go back to it later on after feeling bad about not giving ita chance. I said to myself, "Well, I started it, and just like everyother movie I at least have to give it the benefit of the doubt byfinishing it." This lasted me maybe another 15 minutes until it wascompletely ruined by the most obscene segment of the entire movie.Suddenly, out of no where, Rhoda stands facing a wall, throws off hershirt, John walks over, they start kissing. Then this completely randompassionate love making scene ensues. I laughed out loud, literally. Itwas a complete, "WTF, YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING!" moment. Firstly, itdoesn't fit at all in the movie. Let alone in any of the scenes. Themovie doesn't take that course. It doesn't even have the time todevelop to take that course. Secondly, it's disgusting. Why you ask?Brit Marling looks like she's fifteen. William Mapother looks like yourtypical 50-something year old guy. It's not a pretty sight to see, ithas pedophilia written all over it. It's so out of place, it instantlybrings me back to the following question. A 7? Really IMDb a **** 7? Moving along...In all honesty, the movie really is great concept. I like the paralleluniverse, quantum mechanic ideas that are thrown around. Yet, thebiggest problem the movie faces is that these notions they aren'treally divulged into at all in this movie. It's sort of a side story. It's there, "The other Earth." There are scenes that infrequentlyappear that are related to "Earth 2." Nevertheless, it has absolutelynothing to do with the main story line. Let's get into that a little bit, the main story. The most unrealisticplot I've ever seen. Now, this has nothing to do with the parallelEarth theories. They are very realistic, actually, almost factual atthis point in time because of the Drake Equation and Quantum Physics. My problem is with the actual story line. You know the one that wouldnever actually happen and really makes no sense. Rhoda for some oddreason develops this sick obsession with the person's life shedestroyed. It's not a, "let me go apologize to free my conscience"obsession; the obsession being the guilt you are left with for taking aperson's life on accident. Instead, it's I'm going to get to know thisperson for some reason. Not tell him who I am, clean his house, ****him, and well, that's about as far as I got into the movie because Icouldn't take the senselessness any longer. She goes over there andpretends to be a part of some maid service. Cleaning his house forfree? Yeah that will pay off the debt that you owe him for destroyinghis family. Yeah, cleaning his house for free will bring back his wifeand son. Yeah, ****ing him will bring back those cherished moments heshared with his wife and child. I'm hoping you detect my sarcasm ifit's not flagrant enough. In all honesty, that's what you have to lookforward to in this movie. Forget the fact that you think you are goingto watch a movie that actually is based on its synopsis. It's not. It'salmost like the people who were involved in making this movie couldn'tmake up their minds on what type of a movie they wanted to develop. DoI want to make a Sci-Fi movie? Do I want to make an Indie movie? Do Iwant a Drama? Do I want a Love Story? No, instead I want all of thosegenres in one big giant cluster**** of a movie that is thrown together, goes nowhere and is all over the place. That's the end result. Poorlyexecuted everything.Let's talk about the music; dreadful. No, I'm being generous, atrocious. I enjoy classical music. This instead was like you gave atoddler a violin and said, "Ok, start making music!" Not to mention,IT'S THE SAME ANNOYING SOUND IN EVERY SCENE. It's like they ran out ofmoney for a soundtrack and said, "Ok, let's wing it. Go grab Bob fromthe back and give him this violin. Record him playing. That will be oursoundtrack..."Now the acting. The acting quality was the equivalent of that onGeneral Hospital. No, I'm wrong again, they might actually be better onthat show. Only thing is, there is barely any dialog in the entiremovie. Most scenes are quite vapid, meaningless transitions. That about sums up the movie; utter trash. Don't waste your time if youhave even half a brain. If you have no brain you might enjoy it likethe people on this website. Maybe there is a parallel Earth where thismovie never made it to release. Maybe there is a parallel Earth wherethis movie got its deserved rating of a 1. All we can do is wonder...

Rather beautiful and sad

I went to the cinema on the spur of the moment, I had a couple of hoursto kill. I scanned the billboard for anything that might seem vaguelyinteresting - "Another Earth" sounded science fiction-y so I bought myticket and went in.It's important I explain this for two reasons: first because I saw thismovie "tabula rasa", having not seen trailers, read reviews or havingany idea what it was about. Secondly it became evident from the bad-tempered muttering in the back I wasn't the only one to have done this.At first I struggled with the concept, but I kept an open mind and avery different movie to the one I thought I would see developed, andwas actually quite well done. After about 20 minutes I was ready to getup and leave, but giving it time paid back dividends, by the lasthalf-hour I had become too involved to consider leaving. The story is a slow burner that grips you incrementally, and while theoccasionally grainy or out of focus shots give you the strongimpression this was made on a shoestring, that is no reason to holdanything against it. Having seen the high budget yawn-fest"Transformers" I can actually say that given the current state of bigbudget science fiction this is a refreshing, if a bit left-fieldapproach to the genre.Evidently my companion viewers in the cinema, a small group of guys, were not getting as much out of the deeply troubled love story thatforms the basis of the plot, and they made their discontent veryaudible to my irritation. In brief, not a film for everyone, but if you're in the mood for anintrospective slow-burner and you've got the patience for it, this filmwill prove a rewarding experience

Totally boring

What in the world was it so important to bring out that he is acomposer? He could have been everything else to get the story out..Itsnot necessary for this story at all! I think this was a very boringstory, slow, improbable...The people seems to not bother that ananother planet is in eyesight from earth. I guess it was more actionwhen Armstrong took his first step on the moon than in this movie. Theyall seem to be unconcerned. How could he get her ticket when she wasthe winner? They choose her for her story, and suddenly he is going toearth 2. And the old man she worked with and visited on the hospital, what was the meaning of having him in the movie? I don't like moviesthat we have to create our own story by guessing. The write: Asurprisingly end...Yeh, why does she meet herself in the end? Do wehave to read the book to understand this story? Awful movie!

Tell me Did they or didnt they?

I had already read that the second Earth wasn't really an importantpart of the story. And since it was an implausible/nay, impossibleoccurrence I focused on the journey Rhoda took to deal with her guilt. That led to a love story. What a nice story that was--John slowlycoming out of the alcoholic coma to notice his cleaning girl has brainsand charm. And she comes out of her depression as she becomes hisfriend. But this immediately becomes problematic as John is now fallingfor her and she happens to be living a lie: she killed his wife and kidand a fetus. If she doesn't tell him she's going to bring him even MOREpain! Around that time he plays the saw for her (great scene) and thenlater they kiss. I watched to see if sex was involved and I don't thinkthere was. If there was sex she clearly wronged him. He'd never haveagreed to unknowingly fornicate with the killer of his family. If shereally liked him, (which I think she did) she wouldn't have let him doit. To make love with him would have been a huge lie. Then I find that half my movie group thought they DID make love. Ifthat's true I lose about half my admiration for her. And since there'sdoubt, it becomes a flaw in the movie. Why don't directors make itclear when people make love and when they don't? I liked the ending . .. . the one where their non-consummated friendship is furthered by hergiving him her ticket. She's saying she wants him to be happy and she'sopen to finding happiness on this earth.
