Entertaining, but not actually funny

Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) is a pizza delivery chap who falls out with hisbest friend Chet (Aziz Ansari). Dwayne (Danny McBride) is thenot-very-bright son of unpleasant redneck millionaire The Major (FredWard). Together with his even-less-bright friend Travis (NickSwardson), he hatches a plan to hire a hit-man to kill The Major andthus inherit his money. This will cost more money than he has.Solution: rob a bank. But to avoid taking the risk of doing thatthemselves they decide to find an innocent patsy and kit him out with abomb jacket to force him to steal the money. But where can they findsuch a patsy...This short (83 minutes) movie is sold in its trailer as a comedy. Itisn't - it is a suspense drama with comedic elements: similar, I guess,to Fargo, although noticeably less well executed. Having said that, itkept me entertained all the way through.Eisenberg convinces as the young man who believes that his life maycome to an end at any second. And McBride also convinces as the deeplyunpleasant Dwayne (a character I was considerably happier with than thealso deeply unpleasant Thadeous he played in Your Highness earlier thisyear). In fact, with the exception of Chet (somewhat overplayed intohysterical screaminess by Ansari), all the characters did what theywere supposed to from a dramatic viewpoint. The movie even has a weirdkind of believability to it.What it doesn't have is laughs. Or, to be more accurate, not many, andthose which it does have are all in the trailer. This doesn't make it abad film - it rattles along fairly swiftly and remains entertainingthroughout, but it certainly doesn't make it a comedy either.

30 Minutes or Less

Two fledgling criminals kidnap a pizza delivery guy, strap a bomb tohis chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank orelse...With the director's previous work, Zombieland, I had somewhat strongexpectations. Then we have the premise, which sounded very interestingand sounds like it could be a great modern comedy. When the movie cameout, the movie was bashed with bad reviews complaining how the movielacked humor and it's acting. But I thought otherwise and still saw themovie, expectations shining. The movie started, I laughed, and itended. Simple. I'm sure people expected much more but what I got washonestly all I wanted. No more, no less and I still laughed and enjoyedthis summer flick. The plot was awesome and the antics of the two maincharacters were very funny and charming. Not only, the acts of the twowhen they robbed the bank was hilarious. The movie started innocent butslowly dragged into crazy and outrageous situations. The film remindedme of recent comedies like Hangover or Horrible Bosses, but shortlyunderhanded compared to those. After the film, I questioned thereviewer's expectations and thoughts. I thought the film lacked SOMEsense and it had it's flaws, but in no way was the movie bad and Igradually enjoyed myself. If your a fan of recent comedies like thestated above, see this and enjoy it. I recommend staying away from thebad reviews and enjoy it for what it is, not what people expected it tobe. Afterward, express your opinion and feel no shame to do so. I feelas if everybody expects too much, which not everything is perfect. Withaction, humor, and lots of entertainment; 30 Minutes or Less is anothergreat addition to the comedy genre. 8/10.

Watch with your folks when you dont wanna take much out of your neurons

An improbable situation witch reminds me of "Pinneaple Express". Thingsthat can't -in a daily basis- happen and could get even worse fasterthan you think. 30 minutes or less is what to need to see this moviewon't make you crap out your pants laughing, but will present you withsome funny crazy stupidities that leads the story in some out of thepossible situation (truth to be told: you'd like to tell your grandkids30 years from now if it did happen to you).I'm kinda tired of stupid characters doing stupid things. They'restupid, being stupid is not that funny, speak like an idiot even less, but yet, producers insist on and make them sociable morons. This is those kinds of movies made to relax your mind watchingsomething that does not make you think. If you can watch it with matesdrinking some beer when you've done a lot in that weekend and justwanna relax, the movie is made for your. If not... go watch adocumentary.

Not comedy, but disgusting

For those of us with more than ten minute attention spans, the horrificevents of a terrified man with a bomb strapped around his neck, whichthe police were unable to diffuse before it exploded, isn't fodder formovie comedy. This happened. It was real. His name was Doug Wells. And in the end, itblew his head off. It's an image I'll take to my grave. To make a movieabout it as a comedy is disgusting. If this movie is successful, let's make a comedy about assassinatingJFK. It will be a laugh out loud show the whole family can enjoy, followed by the sequel. Got MLK? I Did!Let's make a comedy about a nut-job shooting a US Senator. This kind ofexcrement is protected under the First Amendment, but just because it'sprotected speech, I don't have to give my hard earned money asapproval. My advice, you shouldn't either.

30 Laughs or Less

It has its moments. For those people who said this was not really a comedy, but a drama, oran action movie, I don't know what kind of stuff you're smoking. Ofcourse this is a comedy, based on the writing, acting and directingchoices. It's just a comedy that doesn't work all that well.Comedy is tough to get right. We all know that. Here, they did get afew things right, but not nearly enough. I laughed several times.Eisenberg as the lead does portray a gormless slacker quite well. AzizAnsari as the excitable frenemy is sometimes funny, sometimes too overthe top. McBride and Swardson are great dunderheads; McBride as thedumbest man in the World and Swardson as his stooge (as once coined byMichael McKean regarding Lenny and Squiggy). Like I said, I laughed ata few of the bits of dialog: "You bought a Mustang and it got AIDS.""Hey, she spilled my soda." I just didn't laugh from beginning to end.And also, why did they have to set this in some backwater like GrandRapids, Michigan? Not bagging on the place specifically, it was justdepressing to look at. Any other city in the Rust Belt would have beenjust as ugly. That might be a silly reason for some of you, but itreally diminished my enjoyment of the movie. If you catch it on TV, youmight get a few laughs, but I cannot recommend you go out of your wayto track down this movie.

Unpredictable, outrageous and consistently hilarious

Despite multiple viewings, I was never a fan of Zombieland. It was nota horrible film by any measure, and was quite the debut feature forReuben Fleischer, but it still disappointed me every time I tried towatch it. So I went into an advanced screening of his follow-up 30Minutes or Less this week with significantly lower expectations. Ratherthankfully, it surpassed all of them and then some.Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) is a bit of a slacker, and living a fairlymiserable life. He delivers pizzas for a living, while his roommateChet (Aziz Ansari) has just started teaching in a local elementaryschool. On the last delivery of the night, Nick gets jumped by twowannabe- criminals, Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson). They want to have Dwayne's father killed, but cannot come up with themoney in order to get it done right. So they strap a bomb to Nick'schest, and give him ten hours to rob a bank and bring the money back tothem. 30 Minutes or Less is a rare breed of comedy, especially for thissummer. It may sound derivative, and may sound even more like it hastoo much going on at once. But after a chaotically hilarious openingtwenty minutes, the film nestles into its niche, and quickly becomes afairly twisted story that gets more outrageous and dark with everyturn. But instead of slowly falling apart like Horrible Bosses andespecially The Hangover Part II, the film stays consistent throughout, balancing its tone and its laughs exceptionally. Despite being shorterthan Zombieland, Fleischer and screenwriter Michael Diliberti pack inenough material to allow the story to flow briskly, while also neverfinding a moment to slow down. The one-liners come faster and furiouslywith every passing minute, and you may miss a lot from laughing sohard. This is a ludicrously high-concept comedy that could have gonehorrendously wrong (especially given how dangerously close it plays outto a real life event), but it thankfully rarely misses the mark it setsout for itself. Even though the trailer does not suggest it, the film also plays out asa wonderful homage to the buddy films of the 1980s, complete with aninspired soundtrack (Glenn Frey's "The Heat is On" plays over anabsolutely hysterical key scene, instantly bringing memories of BeverlyHills Cop flooding back). Fleischer and Diliberti are about a year toolate to the 80s nostalgia trip, but it does not really matter in thiscase. Instead of remaking or reimagining a 80s brand for the currenttime or using the nostalgia simply for jokes, they use that decade'sinfluence to help craft the film to be even stronger. So strong that italmost feels like it belongs in that era, standing alongside thegreats. It reminded me a lot of Pineapple Express in the way thingsplay out, but 30 Minutes never allows itself to become overly seriousor something it is not. Acting wise, everyone brings their A-game and is absolutely fantastic.Their deadpan and quick-witted responses and chemistry together as agroup is simply astounding. Eisenberg plays his usual oafish loser, butbrings a kinetic and nervous energy he has so far reserved away frommost of his movies. While he is usually calm and relaxed, he lets loosehere, and brings about one of his finest comedic performances to date.Much the same goes for McBride, who is larger than life here, casting ashadow over almost everyone. It has taken me a long time to warm up tohis brand of comedy, but seeing him in action here is simply magical. He gets all of the best lines, and delivers them with the gusto of atrip master of the craft.Ansari, in his first real major film role, holds it together fairlywell, but you can tell he is a bit hot under the collar. It pays off inhis insanely delirious performance, but it is a bit too shaky in somecases. Swardson holds his own surprisingly, and proves that he can bean absolute riot when cut off from Adam Sandler and company. Let's hopethis film helps him take the hint. But special mention has to go toMichael Peña as the would-be assassin, who dusts off his wacky accentfrom Observe and Report, and somehow makes himself even more over-the-top. I hate to say it considering how dementedly hilarious the rest ofthe cast is, but he steals almost every scene he appears in.While my enthusiasm for the film may sound a little overbearing, it isfar from perfect. The characters are a bit too under sketched, andnever really develop outside of the parameters of the story set-up.They are not quite one-dimensional, but outside of their key traits, there is not much else there. This may sound a bit like nitpicking, butfor a film that does so much else right, it seems a little strange thatthe characters are not better developed. We care about all of thesecharacters, and especially want to see Nick make it out of thissituation alive. But I think a bit of extra dialogue here and there toreally make something of these characters could have gone a long way.And while I appreciated the movie references, some of the moreadvertising-like references were a bit excessive (Eisenberg mentioningFacebook was cutesy, but Aziz going on a tirade about Netflix pricingseemed a bit forced). I held small hopes I would enjoy 30 Minutes or Less, and was impressedby how wildly hilarious it is. It is instantly quotable, and packs someof the best comedy we have seen this summer. It may come later, and maysound a bit ridiculous, but do not allow that to make you hesitateseeing it. Letting it pass you by is simply criminal.8/10.

For Lewd Joke Buffs Only

As ridiculous as the film may seem, '30 Minutes or Less' thrives on itsludicrousness as a foundation for its humour. A more serious adaptationof this partly true story done in a similar manner would have beendeclared slapstick, but in this case, it works rather well. Although Danny McBride's constant lewd references can be a touchexcessive, he can either be the most offensive individual you have evercome across or a humorously witty guy in the bawdiest possible way. Avery Judd Apatow style film, director Ruben Fleischer has selected anoteworthy cast who contributed solidly such as Aziz Ansari, theteacher turned rookie bankrobbing compatriot to Jesse Eisenberg'scharacter and Nick Swardson who played McBride's suppressed comicsidekick. This was a refreshing take on the raunchy comedy genre notbased on the likes of 'American Pie', but moreso on Judd Apatow's'Pineapple Express' or even 'Your Highness'. The film is excessive and idiotic yet provides for a good afternoon'sentertainment, as long as you have a high tolerance for vulgar jokes

30 Minutes Or Less delivers the laughs at a rapid pace

I can't say that this film lived up to Zombieland, but Ruben Fleischercame pretty close with his second feature film, 30 Minutes or Less. Itis just a riotous good time that brings the laughs at a rapid firepace! The writing is a bit sharper than your typical screwball comedy, but it still delivers all the crazy and hilarious antics you'd expect. The central character is Nick (Jesse Eisenberg), a pizza delivery boyin his 20s, who, while delivering a pizza one night, is knocked out andawakens to find that two amateur criminals in monkey masks havestrapped a bomb to his chest. Nick now has exactly ten hours to rob abank and get the money to the guys or else... Assisted by his bestfriend Chet (Aziz Ansari), a substitute teacher, he races against theclock to bring closure to certain aspects of his life while alsofiguring out a game plan for robbing the bank and hopefully coming outof this whole thing without blowing up.This was just a great buddy comedy that features a really funny cast, including a few actors that I only really like in certain roles: DannyMcBride and Aziz Ansari, but they paired perfectly with funny man NickSwardson and one of my favorite actors, Jesse Eisenberg.Being a rather short film, it never really had a chance to slow downand did a wonderful job at delivering laugh-out-loud one-liners whilealso never deviating from the central story, which actually threw insome fun, unexpected curve balls that kept the film interesting.I can't say that it was perfect comedy, some of the sexual jokes got alittle overbearing (mainly from Danny McBride's character), but overallit is really funny, quick-witted and just an excitingly chaotic ridefrom start to finish.

So...hows your day been?

Though the screenwriter Michael Diliberti denies it, it's pretty clearwith the striking similarities that 30 Minutes or Less is trying tomirror the 2003 incident where a pizza delivery man was forced to rob abank with, what he thought, was a fake bomb around his neck.Unfortunately it wasn't, and the bomb exploded killing him. Dilibertiwas said to be "vaguely aware" of it, but after you watch the film, then read the story, it becomes pretty clear that he was more thanthat.30 Minutes or Less is a highly energetic comedy with many laughs, butway too many action set pieces. It relies on that instead of thechemistry between Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari. The film is aboutNick (Eisenberg), a pizza man who promises your pizza in thirty minutesor less. His best friend Chet (Ansari) is disgusted when he learns thatNick is sleeping with his twin sister Kate (Vadsaria). They fight andthen go on with their merry way.Meanwhile we are also introduced to Dwayne (McBride) and Travis(Swardson), two losers who work for ten dollars an hour cleaningDwayne's father's pool. Dwayne's dad (played by Fred Ward who scoressome of the biggest and dirtiest laughs in the film) was in themilitary and won the ten million dollar jackpot on the lottery yearsago. He spends his money worse than a drunken sailor on big screen TVs,pools, and cars, but somehow has managed to not blow all ten millionyet. This causes much dismay amongst Dwayne who is sick of his father'sspending habits and his unpleasant personality. One night at a strip club, a dancer convinces Dwayne that she shouldcall her hit-man (Pena) to kill Dwayne's father so he can inherit themoney so that she can make quite a few bucks off of him. The problem isthat the hit-man needs $100,000 or he won't do it. So, Dwayne andTravis call an unsuspecting pizza man, who of course has to be Nick, strap a bomb vest to him, tell him that he needs to rob a bank in lessthan ten hours or the bomb will detonate. When he gets the money he'llbe given a code that will disarm the bomb. That is one bloated comedic premise, and it astonishes me everyone inthe film is stupid enough to actually go through with all that.Director Ruben Fleischer who worked with Eisenberg on Zombieland twoyears ago has unfortunately made him take about ten steps back from thegenius he played in The Social Network.Eisenberg and Ansari seem like they could assist in making somelovable, Harold and Kumar-like chemistry. The problem is the filmdoesn't ever want to let the characters go off on their own, and at thefear of the audience becoming bored, they decide to throw in so manycliché action set pieces. Once the heist happens, the film doesn't haveany purpose else so it decides to throw in a bunch of typical twistsand turns hoping to extend the plot past an hour and twenty minutes. Italready barely sustains a full length film.30 Minutes or Less does pack in some pretty heavy laughs, most of themcoming from Aziz Ansari as he shows why he should be involved as thelead in more R-rated comedies. He's different and funnier than mostcomedy actors and he almost compliments the mediocre Danny McBride andNick Swardson. All I can say is that 2011, along with Your Highness, has not been a kind year for Danny McBride. And when considering BuckyLarson: Born to Be a Star it hasn't necessarily been Swardson'syear-to-remember either. The premise is cute, the actors are energetic and lively, and some biglaughs are achieved. Ultimately, this is the work of a first timescreenwriter and instead of working on something much, much easier, hedecided to dive into a film with sizable stars with basic skills. Iwouldn't mind seeing Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari in a film togetheragain, in fact, I'd commend it, but hopefully next time they'll be in afilm where there is more laughs and less yelling.Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson,Fred Ward, and Michael Pena. Directed by: Reuben Fleischer.

McBride Swardson Try Their Best To Save This Unfunny Film.

Dwayne and Travis want to kill Dwayne's father because he's rich andthey hope to gain his inheritance. While at a strip club, a strippertells him that she knows a guy who will kill his father for $100 grand. So they decide to strap a bomb to a loser pizza delivery guy and forcehim to do the robbery, so their hands are clean. He has 10 hours to roba bank with a bomb strapped to his chest and he gets the help of hisfriend to do so, comic mischief is suppose to ensue. The premise is interesting and has the chance for some great laughs inawkward situations. Yet the film never really plays the bomb into theequation save for one scene. It's almost as if he doesn't wear one atall, so the tension is out the window and all we are left with is ahectic comedy that, despite some funny players, never gets a laugh. Theproblem is the script, while it's a funny idea, the dialogue andsituations these characters find themselves in are not. Jesse Eisenberg is Nick, the lead character, aka out pizza deliverybomb boy. Eisenberg plays it exactly like he does in every other role, only with more attitude and language. He's been called a poor man'sMichael Cera, but it's nice to see him branching out into other things. He was great in The Social Network, here he's pretty much forgettable. Then again, he's suppose to be the straight man to the three comedianswho try their best to save the film from the abyss that is a terriblescreenplay.Aziz Ansari has some moments where he can pull off a laugh or two, buthe was disappointing in the role that should have really showcased hisskills. While I'm not particularly a fan of his work, I do see hisappeal. The two knuckle heads who come up with this plan are DannyMcBride and Nick Swardson. Both are hilarious and are usually standouts in whatever role they take on. McBride was hilarious in PineappleExpress and his hit show Eastbound & Down and Swardson stole the showin Grandma's Boy and basically every crappy Adam Sandler movie. Itseems like a lot of their chemistry is improve and judging by theirprevious material, that's where they hit their stride. The film reliestoo heavily on whatever these two guys say and do. They are funny, butwhen it's just them coming up with whatever joke they can think of, itkind of wears thin. The film is fast paced, once it gets in the thick of things, but it'sreally short. It ended abruptly and I sat there thinking to myself, wasthat it? 30 Minutes or Less is definitely less and it doesn't compareto the director's previous effort, Zombieland. Which, coincidentallylacked the laughs as well. The film is not that funny and despite twocomedians trying their best with the material, this film doesn't reallyhave anything going for it.

Super quick runtime accounts for laughs, but not great storytelling

Director Ruben Fleischer should call the "making of" documentary ofthis film "86 Minutes or Less." The filmmaker who landed squarely onthe Hollywood directing hot list with 2009's rollicking sleeper hit"Zombieland" has crammed the action and laughs into another unusuallyshort runtime. Distinct advantages exist to the "all business" attitudetoward filmmaking, but "30 Minutes or Less" reveals the criticality ofgood writing in making something like this work. The narrative of"Zombieland" is much tighter, but "30 Minutes or Less" still packs thelaughs into a sufficient summer action comedy."Zombieland" star Jesse Eisenberg helps out Fleischer again as Nick, asimilar loser in the form of a pizza delivery guy, only Nick is muchcruder and gutsier. The neurotic hopeless romantic that theOscar-nominated actor perfected prior to said Oscar nod only rears itshead in the freak-out moments resulting from having a bomb strapped tohis chest by a pair of monkey-masked amateur criminals who've given himnine hours to rob a bank.Although we know that synopsis coming in, the film spends at least 20minutes attempting to properly set it up. We meet Nick, adisappointment by all accounts, and his longtime friend Chet (AzizAnsari), a school teacher. Somehow they provoke each other to the pointwhere Nick reveals he once slept with Chet's twin sister Kate (DilshadVadsaria) in high school (that he's still secretly in love with) andChet lashes back with the secret that he pushed the first domino inwhat resulted in Nick's parents' divorce. Needless to say, the two endup on bad terms before Nick comes to him the next day desperate for hishelp in solving his time- sensitive predicament.Meanwhile, Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson) get anunusual amount of back story for your typical dumb criminals. The twogood-for-nothings decide to take action when Dwayne's lottery-winningex-marine father provokes them by calling them out on their lack oflife direction. Dwayne convinces Travis, a weapons and explosivesexpert, to help him plot a way to kill his dad and get his inheritanceso they can open up a tanning salon that will front for a prostitutionring. They decide to hire a hit-man (Michael Peña) whom they must pay$100,000 and ultimately determine the smartest way to do that is toforce someone to rob a bank for them. These scenes give thosecharacters too much needless motivation, but the extra screen timeprovides McBride and Swardson lots more opportunities to make us laugh. For a film that should feel suspenseful if for nothing else but theimplications of the title "30 Minutes or Less," this juggling ofsubplots dampens the pace. Humor does flow constantly throughout, however, and Eisenberg's desperation to make this all seem very realand frightening in tandem with Ansari's gift for not being tooself-serious work in the film's favor. If only the camera didn't dartaway from them as often as it does and kill whatever momentum theybuilt.Broken down into categories, "30 Minutes or Less" gets good marks forcomedy, but sub-par marks for action because the writing doesn't fuelthe action like it should. Fleischer has not lost any touch in what'salways a challenging sophomore effort; he simply doesn't get as good ofstuff to work with this time around. Fortunately, the four maintalented comedians offer up enough to make this one a worthwhile 86minutes or so.~Steven CVisit my site at http://moviemusereviews.com

What Humour?

Everyone is saying it is the funniest movie of the summer. There was nohumour in this movie. I didn't hear a laugh in the whole theatre. Itwas so boring I was waiting for the bomb to go off so the movie wouldbe over.I thought from the director of Zombieland it would be a lot better. CanI have my money back? The language and sex were a turn off. Near the end it did get a littlebetter..only because maybe the end of the movie was in sight. NickSwardson was the stand out character. If there was comic relief it camefrom him. Wait for the DVD to come out save your money.

lost potential

I waited months for this movie to come out. I thought the actor fromSocial Network was flawless in just about everything he's done lately, including Social Network. Also, I like the lead bad guy when I've seenhim as a supporting character in movies like Tropic Thunder. The otherguys, each of their sidekicks, I really didn't know much about, and thesame with the lead girl. Just the same, I went into the movie the way Ialways go into a movie, with an extra large popcorn, soda, and at leastone box of candy, and a willingness to laugh. Was it me or did most ofthe jokes fall flat? I felt there was a lot of opportunities but no onetook advantage of them. It felt like I was almost forcing a laugh hereand there because I wanted to laugh, and I did at times, but I feellike it was flat overall and not that funny. If it was supposed to bemore of an action movie, that didn't work for me, either. The lead badguy is funny in supporting roles, but as a lead bad guy, he's a no go.Also, was that movie only like 80 minutes with the credits? It feltreally long for 80 minutes.

What?

All I want to say is, why does this garbage pass for humor. My personalopinion. It seems that all of the "comedy" movies anymore only draw oncontrived, simplistic, slapstick that you can see coming from SarahPalin's back yard as viewed from Russia. Is it that I don't understandwhat humor is? Or maybe it is beyond the realm of feasibility toactually write something funny and the zombie apocalypse has alreadyhappened. How do you make a zombie laugh? By showing movies based ondead ideas apparently. 33 minutes was all I could take. Do I get mylife back because it took more than 30 minutes for me to finally bailon this movie?

So funny, great cast, great humor

This is the funniest movie of the summer! It is great on so manylevels. So lets break it down: 1. The cast - Jesse Eisenburg, AzizAnsari, Danny McBride, and Nick Swardson. This is an all star cast fora comedy film! Eisenburg has really come into his own since The SocialNetwork. Aziz Ansari is great too, he is so funny in this. He warpsevery scene he's in. Danny McBride and Nick Swardson are pretty muchthe same. They both play really good douchebags. That's it. 2. Thestory - Jesse Eisenburg plays Nick, a slacker and pizza delivery boywho doesn't care what he does with his life. Aziz however is Nick'sbest friend, Chet and is more responsible. He is a substitute teacherfull time and worries about Nick. Danny McBride plays Dwayne who is aretard with no common sense. He hates his father, The Major (played bythe brilliant Fred Ward) and plans to hire someone to murder him so hecan inherit the rest of his dad's 10 million dollar lotto win. Alongwith his best friend Travis, they kidnap Nick, strap a bomb on him andforce him to rob a bank so they can pay a hit man to kill the Major.I'm not even gonna talk about Michael Pena's role, I hated it so much.Everything goes down on this one day with Nick righting his wrongs inlife and robbing the bank with Chet. 3. Humor - The humor of this filmwas extremely raunchy, like most films now a days. Lots of sexualreferences and F-bombs going down. It does get tiring after a while butI give this film a 10 anyway. So this film was great! Screw the critics, they don't understand goodcomedies today! Form your own opinion on films and don't listen tothem. Watch this film!!!

Im Done Kenny... Im Done.

Oh how it aches my heart to speak these words... Kenny Powers we aredone. If you are not familiar with the name, it is Danny McBride'scharacter in East Bound and Down. All the crude laughter and clevercringe humor that you once had has now turn into you painfully tellingpenis and vagina jokes as if it's the only joke you know. It's likebeing at a party and you started making a couple of penis jokes, andyeah the first few are pretty funny, but then you just start soundingawkward and desperate. Yeah I'd be giggling when I was 14, but come onman, you're not even clever anymore. The fact that you want us to laughat these terrible jokes is insulting. As for the rest of the cast... Eisenberg takes him self too serious andhe's starting to come off as a douche. Aziz is funny but this characteris not. Every punchline was delivered the same exact way, which makesit painfully obvious when he is trying to queue a laugh. Nick Swardsonwas by far the most animated character, and delivered very well as heactually saved McBride from a string of terrible punchlines. All in all this movie was terribly disappointing. The movie had no paceand killed it's own momentum. The one bank robbery scene wasanti-climatic and the momentum built inside that scene was killed witha quick escape and a divert change of pace. I don't particularly like writing bad reviews but I felt like thismovie could have been so much more.

Banks and bombs.

"And your first thought was to come to a school filled with youngchildren?"30 Minutes or Less is an oddball action/comedy mishmash that reminds meof Pineapple Express more than anything else (though it's not quite asgood or funny). Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari star as a pair offriends who are coerced into robbing a bank, thanks to a bomb and acouple of would-be "criminal masterminds" (Danny McBride ad NickSwardson) in need of $100,000. The humor comes very rapidly, and each joke, hit or miss, doesn'tlinger long before the next one comes along. Your own particular senseof humor will largely decide how much you enjoy 30 Minutes or Less, asmost of the entertainment comes from the silly, rapid-fire banterbetween the two protagonist characters and also that between their twobomb-making nemeses. I liked 30 Minutes or Less. It's not perfect, but it kept me laughing. If you're a fan of the usual brand of crude, dark humor that is sort ofexpected from a movie that Danny McBride plays a big part in, thenthis'll probably be something you enjoy. And if it turns out to not beyour cup of tea, hey, at least it's short.

Funny one liners. Good storyline.

On the cover of it, this isn't usually the sort of movie I would go outof my way to watch, but I thought I'd give it a go.I liked Jesse Eisenberg in Adventureland a few years ago and The SocialNetwork (although that wasn't so much a comedy), and I like hissarcastic sense of humour - so this made me see the movie. The story is basically outlined in the plot and it summarises itcompletely - there isn't much more to it. A pizza delivery guy iskidnapped by 'criminals' and has a bomb strapped to him to make him roba bank for the kidnappers.I thought that Nick (Eisenberg) and Chet (Ansari) worked really welltogether. There were a lot of one-liners from them both at thebeginning of the movie that had me laughing out loud in the cinema(which is the first time probably since The Hangover). The movie did enough to keep me interested throughout and I've rated it8/10 although it is probably more like 7.5/10! Funny one liners. Goodstoryline.

This movie has problems.

What are the problems with this movie? That it purports to be a comedyyet there is nothing funny about the story? That the lead actor is nota comedian? That the story's theme is morbid? That nobody in the storyis actually funny? These rhetorical questions sum up the problems withthis movie. Mixing comedy with action can work, if done correctly. Thismovie does not do that correctly. As a result, this movie is a hybrid, combining the worst features of both genres, except for a chase scenewhich was exciting and attention grabbing. There is nothing wrong withan action movie that has a certain levity. That can be entertaining. But sometimes it doesn't work and when it doesn't work, then theresults are bad. Jesse Eisenberg is a wonderful actor. He should becast in other pics more appropriate for his talent.

Sometimes fate pulls out its big ol cock and slaps you right in face.

I saw this today at a special screening at a movie festival in Dublinand I went in having not read anything about it, seen any trailers orreally heard of it at all before buying my ticket to movie fest. And I must say, WOW. I was impressed. While reading the currently VERYnegative message boards for this movie just now, I felt I had to writea review to defend this movie as best as I could. Some people called it flat or offensive. I feel going into this movieyou need to be lighthearted and open minded. The whole screen (over ahundred people, I guesstimate) loved it. It was a total laugh out loud, witty, hilarious comedy with excellent performances from the two mainleads, particularly Eisenberg who kills it every time for me. I laughed at all the jokes and enjoyed every second of this film.Definitely a stand out this year for me and I would definitely see itagain. Please try to keep an open mind going into this movie as it deals witha very serious topic. Otherwise it is hilarious and throws in somegreat laughs. Definitely a must see for Eisenberg fans and fans ofcomedy in general.
